"Now dear, darling," Aerlinn spoke quickly taking a step backward "What you need to understand is that I wasn't in a tavern fight... I was just the cause of one."

Thranduil spun around and narrowed his eyes intently at Aerlinn. He was incredulous. This entire situation was completely beyond his ability to comprehend.

“What were you doing there in the first place?” He demanded, his voice sharp and stinging. “You had no business being in a place such as that, especially in a Mannish town! Do you have any idea what kind of women go into such places? What were you thinking?!?”

Thranduil rubbed a hand over his face and sighed heavily as he turned and stared at the flames dancing in shades of yellow and red around the logs in the fireplace. Indeed, he thought to himself, what was she thinking. Had he not made it clear when they began to see each other publicly and seriously that she would need to be aware of gossip and how she showed presented herself? Had he not expressed concern over her going to Lake Town to begin with? The king groaned at the thought of the gossip that could be generated about Aerlinn over this .. this.. incident.

Aerlinn looked at the king's back rather stung.

"What… What kind of women…What exactly are you saying Thranduil?"

Her voice betrayed more than she would wish, but she was beyond caring. Her father and brother frequented that particular establishment often enough. Indeed that was the very cause of her visit while in Lake Town, not that he would know that. Aerlinn's eyes flashed. She was very aware of her king's volatile temper, and usually did everything in her power to soothe it, but now he had made her angry.

"Tell me, what kind of women go into such places." Her tone was dangerous. "And what of those that entertain them?"

“Aerlinn!” Thranduil turned abruptly to face the elleth he loved again. His eyes narrowed as he took a step toward her. “That is enough! You and I both know that in the Mannish towns the only women in those places are those who are either granting ‘favors’” he nearly spat the word as he said it, not fully able to believe that he was even having this conversation, “ or selling them. Neither of those are things with which you should be associated!” Feeling his anger surging, he paused before adding, “or exposed to!”

"Is that what you think then?" She was aware that her voice was rising but seemed unable to stop it. "That I was SELLING myself to the highest bidder? What do you figure the king's whore goes for these days?"

She knew that was not what he meant but she was upset and angry and if she would admit it to herself feeling a bit guilty that the entire incident had occurred, which she probably could have prevented had she been paying a bit more attention, and she felt like he wasn't even giving her a chance to explain.

If Thranduil had been irritated, or even angry earlier, he was livid now. “Whore?” he snapped. “Did you just refer to yourself as my WHORE?” He drew a long breath, willing himself to calm down before he did or said something he would regret.

Suppressing a cry of frustration, Thranduil began to pace quickly back and forth in front of the fireplace. Stopping abruptly, he looked at Aerlinn again.

“I did not say that YOU were doing those things, but rather the impression that you will give people. Did you not once stop to consider that people talk?? Even when you think you are free from it, your actions will be watched because of your association with me! And if you do not care what is said, I do, and you KNOW I do!”

The king took another step toward Aerlinn as he continued to rail, “I have half a mind to turn you over my knee and give you a good spanking to teach you some sense of propriety!”

Aerlinn's eyes flew open wide. He wouldn't dare… would he? He had swatted her on occasion, usually playful, though not always, but surely he wouldn't. All the same Aerlinn's voice was a bit lower when she spoke again though no less heated. "I am not a child Thranduil. I am well aware of propriety. It is my job after all." There was that flash of guilt again. "It was not as though I intended to embarrass you. It was not as though I intended for anything that happened that night to happen." All of the temperance that Thranduil's threat had caused was soon gone and she was off again, arching her shoulders back. "Not that you even know what exactly did happen. But if you choose to believe whatever you heard with out asking me then fine go ahead." Aerlinn threw her hands up. "But I'll be damned if I'm going to apologize for my life being and embarrassment to you." Aerlinn felt the urge to stomp her foot at the end of her little speech but she held back. She wanted to get right in his face and yell at him until he… Until he listened to her, that was what she wanted - him to listen to her. Aerlinn had the strange feeling she was trying to convince herself.

“You declare yourself not a child, yet you behaved like some elfling getting their first taste of freedom. You do realize that you could have been hurt, do you not? And I know enough! You were in a tavern in Lake Town and started some.. some.. brawl!” Thranduil bit off the words as he spoke him. He found himself once again having to forcefully calm himself.

Aerlinn was indignant. "I would not have been hurt and I did NOT start it." She sighed and her demeanor quieted a bit as she spoke almost to herself. "I just did not stop it." She shook her head and looked back at Thranduil. "But it never would have happened if everyone was not trying to protect me all the time!"

Thranduil was tempted to snort, but he refrained. “Aerlinn, that makes absolutely no sense. What does protecting you have to do with you running around making yourself the subject of idle gossip?”

Aerlinn yelled wordlessly and looked at Thranduil incredulously. "You are impossible. Fine. I pranced myself into the nearest slummy tavern saddled right over to the richest purse and when he refused my price, slugged him, inducing the entire thing of course. I apologize, Your Majesty, next time I will ask you how much I should charge in advance."

That was it. Thranduil had heard and taken all he cared to, and with movements that in his memory would forever seem blurred, he seized Aerlinn by her upper arm, spun her around and landed a resounding smack on her bottom. Without even waiting for a response of any kind, he marched her to the nearest chair and pulled her quickly over his lap before grabbing her gown and jerking it up to expose her bottom. Wordlessly, the king raised his hand and landed five good hard swats to the crest of Aerlinn’s backside before saying anything more. When he finally did speak again, he accented each word with a hard slap, “I have had it with your attitude and I suggest you lose it immediately.”

Aerlinn was torn between the utter embarrassment of being exposed, not to mention being spanked like a naughty elfling, the anger she still felt though was being quickly replaced, and the reactions that come anytime one's bottom is being soundly spanked. She reached back trying to stop his hand. "STOP THIS! THRANDUIL!"

Thranduil ignored her shouts and simply grabbed her wrist and pinned it at the small of her back while he continued the spanking, moving now to her more sensitive sit-spot. “I will not stop,” he declared, while raining down a particularly hard set of blows, “until you cease this denial and accept that your behaviour was completely and totally outside what you know to be acceptable.”

"Thranduil!" The heat in Aerlinn's backside was rising at a rapid pace. She didn't remember spankings hurting quite so much. But it was. She was embarrassed and she was stinging and she felt tear springing into her eyes. She blinked them back quickly, hoping they wouldn't be replaced. "Thranduil… please."

Thranduil, of course, had no intention of stopping before his conditions were met, and so far, none of them had been. He paused briefly when Aerlinn said please, but when she said nothing more he found a renewed vigor and once again accented each word with a heavy handed blow to her quickly reddening posterior. “Please WHAT, Aerlinn?? Please stop? I have told you when I will stop.” Thinking he wasn’t getting the appropriate response, the king moved to the tops of Aerlinn’s thighs and peppered them with the same stinging blows as he had delivered to her bottom.

Much to her ever increasing embarrassment Aerlinn's tears were replaced and growing as her… her spanking continued. She tried to hold silence but Thranduil's hand never wavered, and she wanted it all to end. 'I… I should have been more careful. I" her body sagged. "I should have stopped them. I should have seen it coming and I should have stopped them."

Much to his satisfaction, Thranduil finally began to see the change that he was looking for. It was, however, not complete. He moved the spanking back to the fullest part of Aerlinn’s bottom as he continued to speak to her, fully expecting a proper response. “You should not have been there in the first place!”

"I had to" Everything in Aerlinn wanted to break down into sobs but she was fighting it with everything she had. She didn't want him to see her in tears on top of everything else. But she wondered how long she would still be able to form coherent statements. She cried out as another hard swat landed. "My bro-br-brother!!"

Thranduil paused. “What about your brother?” he asked, still holding Aerlinn firmly over his lap.

"I, he was there." Aerlinn squeezed her eyes shut tight taking deep breaths trying to get it together.

Thranduil’s eyes narrowed at this bit of news. He hadn’t known that the young lieutenant was even going. And still, why would he be in there either, and why in the world would he take his sister? “What was your brother doing there?” the king demanded. It was one thing to travel to the Mannish towns and partake of the offerings, but the offerings were plentiful enough without resorting to satisfying baser instincts.

Aerlinn's deep breaths seemed to be working, though they did nothing to relieve the ache. "Drinking and gambling."

Thranduil sat stunned for a moment, unable to believe what he was hearing. “Why would you go with him?? You do not even like gambling!”

Aerlinn's blush found a new life as she suddenly remembered exactly why she had gone with her brother. That part had seemed trivial in light of the rest of the events. She doubted Thranduil would think so though. She tensed and spoke as quietly as she could as if she had any hope of him not hearing her. "He dared me."

A dare. All of this was over a dare. Thranduil pursed his lips and began spanking Aerlinn’s bottom again, very hard and very fast, not giving her even a fraction of a second to process what was happening. A dare! He thought to himself as he focused on her already reddened sit-spot. That she put herself in that situation over a dare angered Thranduil as much as it concerned him and he made short work of showing her in no uncertain terms exactly how he felt about it.

All of Aerlinn's fight was gone. She couldn't hold back the tears anymore, they were just one more thing to add to the list as she began to sob. She had no more explanations no excuses. Indeed this was not the first time that one of her brother's dares had ended her in this position, though this time he wouldn't be sharing it too. She was done struggling. She just cried. "I-I-I'm sorry!!!"

At last feeling a change in her demeanor as well as tone of voice, Thranduil stopped the spanking. He pulled the gown back down to cover Aerlinn’s very red bottom and stood her up before him. Her sobs tore at him, but he still felt he had done the right thing. Standing, the king pulled Aerlinn into his arms and held her to his chest, letting her cry it all out. He kissed the top of her head and stroked her hair gently, waiting for her to settle.

Aerlinn leaned against him not knowing what to say even if she could find words. She cried into his chest until she could finally stop. Even then, though she knew she should, for some reason she couldn't let go of him. She needed him.

Thranduil would hold Aerlinn for as long as she needed him to. He leaned down and spoke into her ear, “I love you, mir-nin,” he said softly as he gave her another squeeze. “With all of my soul.”

Aerlinn turned her head slowly looking into Thranduil's eyes, searching them. He did still love her. After all that she had done. She leaned up and kissed him with an uncommon force, before replying. "I love you too." She felt that tonight had been a turning point in their relationship. It would be interesting to see what the future held.
