The Court of Thranduil
I was supposed to be writing a report on Henry VIII but this kind of came pouring out of me instead. It’s just a simple short story about a secret affair going on in the court of Thranduil.

The impression of the Elven Court was lively that night. The singing hymns enchanted through the hall in blissful pleasure. The Elven lords and maids flitted toward one another, their eyes mysterious and mischievious; alive with the excitement of being within the great hall of Thranduil. Goblets of wine and sweet morsels were passed among the laughing courtiers. At the head of this great throng of nobles sat the King Thranduil upon a wood carven throne, and beside him, his queen, Nessa. Her bright hair and eyes set her apart from all other maids within the hall. Promises of love and devotion were thrown erratically from the courtier lords, and she tilted her head deftly towards them and swept her long eyelashes flirtatiously downward. Queen Nessa was a lady among maids and adequately aware of her beauty. The Queen’s eyes flitted upward suddenly, and she gave a small smile. She laughed at once and turned to her husband the King.
“Thranduil, I do believe our guest is enjoying himself this evening!”
The King nodded perceptively, his eyes never reaching her.
As the lutes played in a cadenced rhythm, young Elladan of Imladris danced freely and blithely with his pick of the maids of the evening, within the center of the great hall. The realm of Greenwood seldom harbored guests and the young lord’s presence was noted and enjoyed by all, especially by that of the young elven ladies. His handsome features were said to rival those of the King Thranduil, though with a darker eminence. Where as Thranduil reigned king of golden suns and bright comeliness, Elladan was a prince of the night and silver shadows.
He spun with one maid only to turn and find another lass waiting to be his for a moment’s enchantment. He smiled his secretive smile to each of them in turn, displaying to the entirety of the world that he adored being adored.
“Well danced Lord of the Hidden Vale!” the queen called as the song ended. She stood from her throne with her hands clasped and eyes shining. Thranduil remained seated and motionless.
Breathing from his exertion of dance, the young lord still found the exuberance to smirk his lovely features toward the queen, his lips slightly parted.
“I thank you Nessa, Queen of the Green Wood, though my father is the bearer of that title.”
The Queen once more turned her head to the side and swept her eyes down to him, “Yet, a lord you are none the less, young Elladan.”
The courtiers watched on in silence at this witty banter between their queen and their guest.
A portion of the crowd parted as Elladan made his way through them to stride gracefully up the steps beneath the throne of King and Queen. He swept low to the ground in an elegant bow. The queen knelt in a dainty curtsy. The young lord’s vivid eyes slowly shifted towards the King who had not yet spoken. Without a glimmer of further expression, Thranduil nodded at last in return.
“If it would not cause any displeasure to your majesty, I would ask if I may dance with your lady wife for a melody,” Elladan uttered quietly, still low in his bow. The throng of courtiers leaned forward earnestly, striving to capture the young lord’s quiet words.
Lord and King remained silent and staring toward one another, their thoughts hidden completely. Even the queen glanced uncertainly between each of them. The quiet began to become uncomfortable in the hall and the slight sound of a stifled cough seemed, suddenly, very loud.
“As you will,” Thranduil finally acquiesced with such a quiet voice, that no one had heard him but for Elladan. The young lord’s quiet demeanor vanished suddenly as he stood abruptly and drew the Queen’s hand with his own.
“I thank you, good King! Come Queen Nessa! We shall dance until you have forgotten your husband and wish to return to Imladris with me!” The Queen and the entire court laughed pleasantly at his simple jest as Elladan threw a glance over his shoulder to the king. The King had not even deigned to smile, yet his eyes glittered away from his previously hard expression. The young lord noticed the change, however slight it was, and flashed a triumphant smile. Turning the Queen towards the center of the hall he called gallantly to the lute players.
“My lords, a song for this noble lady and myself if it please you!”
The players began at once with a dancing tune, and the Queen and young lord danced stylishly with one another, centered within an audience of courtiers. They parted and met, spun and bowed, smiled and wove with one another. The Queen’s brilliant smile seemed to widen as she danced with the handsome Elladan. His eyes stayed with hers, but for every turn they spun, they would dance back towards the King on his throne.
Thranduil watched as the lord danced with his wife among the people of court, a faint jealousy in his eyes. His hands gripped the arms of his throne whenever the Imladrin elf’s eyes were upon him. He swallowed visibly and a crimson flush flowered along his neck.
Nessa laughed gaily as Elladan lifted her into the air and down to his side. Her happiness swelled at the comely elf’s attentions and the jealous gaze her husband was throwing at her. Nothing pleased her more than teasing her King. The moments passed and finally, the lute players ended their song. Elladan and Nessa froze midsetp, breathing heavily with their hands entwined. The entire hall clapped in approval, all save the King.
Thranduil’s eyes blazed in emotion, his hands trembling.
Upon the dance floor, Elladan muttered to the Queen.
“I fear I must return you to your husband, fair one, or he’s sure to have both our heads on account of jealousy.”
The Queen smiled seductively as Elladan led her back through the crowd towards the thrones. She glanced towards her husband to see him glowering towards the young elf that held her arm in his elbow. The jealousy was there, plain to see. And yet. . . . .there was no anger in her husband’s gaze. She glanced toward Elladan to notice him smirking secretively to the King.
“I thank you for the great honor of a dance with your Queen, Thranduil,” Elladan spoke fluidly. Nessa quickly turned her eyes to the King. His eyes were warm and filled with a lust upon the elf of Imladris.
The jealousy, the hidden gazes Elladan had repeatedly thrown at the King, their communication a level above her own. . .
Nessa felt faint as she suddenly knew.
