Prologue
Legolas’ eyes remained fixed on his father’s face as the king absentmindedly played with his food.. The dessert was one of Thranduil’s favorites: baked apples sweetened with honey and spiced with cinnamon. Yet the bowl of fruit failed to lift the king’s mood
Legolas didn’t need to guess what was on his father’s mind. “Ada, are you still thinking about her?” he asked. He was referring to his mother and Thranduil’s former wife who had left them nearly two centuries earlier because she wanted “freedom from the prison called a home with a husband and children.”
“Do you have to go?” Thranduil asked instead of responding to his sons inquiry. “It gets very lonely here when you are away.”
“Aye,” said Legolas. “Elladan has visited me thrice already since last I was in Rivendell.”
Thranduil nodded with understanding but his expression remained morose. He did not like it when Legolas left Mirkwood because his younger son was the only person he was able to talk to. He was not close with Legolas’ older brother and, since he was never one to make acquaintances easily, he didn’t have any friends at all.
“Ada?”
Hmm?”
“You still have not answered my question,” Legolas pointed out.
“What was it?” Thranduil asked, pretending that he had either forgotten the question or had never heard it in the first place.
Legolas glared at his father.
“Ahh..that question,” Thranduil said, as if suddenly regaining his memory. Then he sighed. “Aye, I was thinking about her.”
“Why?” asked Legolas. “Why think about something that is over?”
“I am a lonely Elf, Legolas,” said the king, his voice hollow. “All I have left are memories with which to fill the void within my heart.”
“Nay, these memories only serve to make you even more depressed,” said Legolas.
Thranduil looked away, his light green eyes staring off into the distance. He knew that his son spoke the truth, and he did not want to hear it.
“Ada, you must move on. Find yourself someone new,” Legolas suggested.
“I cannot,” Thranduil said in an adamant tone of finality. “There is no one out there for me.”
Legolas kept silent, but he believed that there was, in fact, someone out there for his father. Yet, he knew he could not entrust the task of finding that person to Thranduil. He would have to find a lover, or at least a friend for his lonely father on his own, and he already had someone in mind.
