The lightning flashed outside, highlighting the raindrops as they pounded to the ground. Deep rumbles of thunder sounded.

Erestor peered outside, desperately looking for a sign of the returning party. But there was only silence and rain.

“I feel helpless,” he whispered to Elrond, who was sat in front of the fire at the other side of the room.

“The patrol will be back soon,” Elrond replied.

“No, something feels wrong,” Erestor said, bowing his head.

“Come sit by the fire and wait then,” offered Elrond.

Erestor took one more look out of the window, but he was met again by the night. Slowly, he made his way across the room and took a glass of wine offered by Elrond. They sipped the wine in silence.

Erestor finished his glass and placed it on the table before pulling an envelope out of his robes.

“What is that?” Asked Elrond.

“I don’t know,” Erestor replied. “He gave it to me just before he left to open if…” He looked up at Elrond, unable to finish.

“’tis only a storm, Erestor,”

“I’ve only just found him.”

There was nothing Elrond could say to that. Silence took over again. After some time, Erestor moved to continue his vigil at the window. This time, Elrond stood beside him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The lightning flashed outside, highlighting the horse racing towards Imladris with two riders on its back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Elrond tucked a blanket round Erestor, who had fallen asleep on the chair in front of the fire. The sound of a horse walking over the paved courtyard grabbed his attention and he moved to the window. He was unable to see anything in the storm.

He made his way to the door, taking a look at Erestor to see if he was still asleep. Silently, he left the room and made his way to the Healing Rooms, his heart heavy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Running through the house to the Healing Rooms, Erestor knew something was wrong. As he reached the door he slowed. Elrond’s twin sons stood there, heads bowed. They were still in their patrol gear, muddy and bloodied. They looked up as he walked towards them, but he just couldn’t ask. They both reached out to him but he pushed their hands out of the way, he had to see.
His hand shook as he pushed the door open.
Inside was Elrond. He looked up as Erestor approached and moved the sheet back, revealing long, golden hair and a face serene, as if in sleep.
Erestor reached into his pocket and pulled out the letter, crumpled now. He just looked at it for a few moments, before gathering the courage to open it. Erestor screamed when he read what was written.
I’ll find you somewhere. Wherever you are, I won’t stop searching.
