Last and first kiss.

“Enjoying yourself councillor?”
“Aye immensely, does it show?” Was the sarcastic reply.
“Come now Erestor, ‘tis a time of celebration why do you not join the festivities?”
“I am fine where I am thank you seneschal.”
“Unacceptable! We are marking the new year, even you can not deny enjoying this tradition!”

Erestor winced at the captains loud and boisterous tone, obviously induced by the alcohol. He had been perfectly content to ride out the pointless evening in his current spot, a safe distance from the crowd of elves making merry.

“It is but a year Glorfindel, was it a year to us?”
“What is a year?”
“Yes why celebrate but a single year?”
“There are plenty of reasons to celebrate one year.”
“Such as? What has transpired this year that is worth so much kafuffle?”
“Well for starters, three hundred and sixty five beautiful sunrises, and in turn three hundred and sixty five glorious sunsets. I am one year older and therefore one year wiser…”

To this Erestor could not help but raise his brow and snort. To which Glorfindel blissfully ignored and continued.

“…my Asfaloth became a father for the first time…”

Erestor could not help but smile at the adoring and proud expression on the golden lords face.

“…harvests have been plenty, the wines have been sweet, and…the company has been good.” Glorfindel said with a smirk, an annoying suggestive smirk which could not be mistaken for its meaning. Erestor cleared his throat and tried to look away disinterestedly, his discomfort showing clearly.

“I for one have had…let me see if I can count…” Here Glorfindel took a moment to act as if he were counting upon his fingers, “…eight very delectable kisses…amongst other things.” He finished in a low voice, grinning at the fact that he was making Erestor blush beautifully.

“And yourself?” The warrior asked, tilting the advisors head by the chin to face him again.

“What?” Was surprisingly enough the nervous reply.
“Well, if you can not think of any of your own achievements to celebrate, compare them to mine.” He had said with a shrug, with a sigh Erestor humoured him.

“There have indeed been many a beautiful sunset and sunrise. The harvests have as you have said been plentiful and the wines sweet.” Erestor finished with a shrug and again looked away only to have his chin again gripped and pulled back o face the apposing but sweet warrior.

“And?”
“And what?” Erestor asked quietly, not wishing to further the conversation and embarrass himself. “You were right, for once, I suppose those things were and are worth celebrating.”
“And what of the last comparison? I would like to know how our fairest and most beautiful councillor compares to my tally.”
“Do you really keep a tally of your lovers?” Erestor asked in disapproval and with a scowl. Missing the compliments paid to his indeed most beautiful features that were often completely overshadowed by the advisors inability to accept or believe any compliment given to him.

“Of course I do not.” Glorfindel replied quietly and with a frown. “Admittedly I have had my fare share of love affairs but none I have parted from in anything but mutual friendship. I was but jesting, you really think I would do that?” He asked, unable to mask the offence and slight hurt in his voice. Erestor scowl faded and he looked to the ground slightly ashamed of his remark before looking back to Glorfindel with an apologetic expression.

“Nay I apologise, you are to kind to break hearts, knowingly, at least.”
“What does that mean?” Glorfindel was no longer offended but confused.
“I…nothing, I have just never seen you without another beauty by your side.”

Glorfindel shrugged, “that does not mean that I am involved with another, I simply enjoy companionship.”
“Aye you do, and all of your companions are coincidently breathtakingly beautiful.”

Erestor became wary of the sly grin the warrior sported, his pulse beginning to race and his mouth all of a sudden seeming to dry.

“And here I thought you were above the rest of us, I had thought your tastes veered towards the female persuasion. I have never seen you in any romantic embrace with any male.”
“Have you seen me in one with any female?”
“A good point, I do not know why I assumed that. All the same I had assumed you to not enjoy the company of males, in that way I mean. You are very discreet.”
“Unlike yourself my friend.” Erestor had said with a sad smile that was for the moment missed by Glorfindel.
“Guilty.” The warrior confessed with a laugh.
“Often I have seen you with another beautiful and large as life warrior by your side, much like yourself actually.” Erestor had said whilst clinking the rim of his glass against the side of the one in Glorfindel’s possession.
“Aye, perhaps a little to much like myself.” Glorfindel had said quietly, seemingly bringing the conversation to a halt.

“Have I said something wrong?” Erestor asked quietly as Glorfindel became uncharacteristically quiet. Glorfindel looked back to Erestor and smiled a little more than friendly as Erestor suddenly felt as if the warrior were trying to decipher something about the dark elf.

“You have still not made that last comparison, I am eager to know.” Glorfindel said with a smile as he moved closer and leaned against a pillar casually. His smile seemed to spread as Erestor fidgeted and looked away.

“And why would you want to know that?” Erestor asked still looking away from him.

Again Glorfindel took a liberty many would not with the respected yet slight councillor and gently turned the fair head by the small chin back to face him.
“Just curious.” He answered, again moving closer.

When Erestor simply looked at him before gently moving out of the gentle grip to take a sip of his wine Glorfindel persisted.

“Very well I will guess, I will not be as crude as to guess your bed partners but simply your encounters of the lip variety.” Glorfindel had said with a laugh at his own ridiculous words, yet this time he did not miss the advisors discomfort or beginnings of what seemed to be an intense blush to his pale and flawless complexion.

“Would it be higher or lower than my count?”
Erestor laughed in a humourless way, looking down into his wine glass. “Lower.” Was the quiet reply, making Glorfindel tilt his brows up at the sad tone.

“Five?” A random guess, a simply nod ‘no’ being his reply.
“Three?” The warrior tried again, his voice becoming quieter and more delicate at the sad expression on Erestor’s face. He simply continued when he received no answer.
“One?” He whispered. When Erestor did not answer or even look at him he felt a certain realisation hit him, and at the same time such sweet compassion and adoration, followed by unquenchable want. Moving to stand before Erestor and obscure him from the rest of the crowd Glorfindel dipped his head to catch Erestor’s dark yet heartbreakingly sad gaze.

“Have you ever been kissed Erestor?” He whispered.
“I…please don’t tell any one?” He whispered, looking pleadingly yet sadly to his friend.

Glorfindel could at the same time feel his heart brake and mend anew to beat at an impossible rate at the utter sweetness and innocence of his beautiful friend.
“Erestor…” But Erestor, feeling utterly embarrassed and uncomfortable interrupted him.
“The count down will begin soon. I think I will find Elrond to wish him a happy new year.” Erestor had replied with a false smile, but when he moved to walk around a firm grip was placed upon his upper left arm and he was pulled firmly yet gently to the concealing shadows behind the pillar. Even as in the background a chanting countdown could be heard.

TEN!
“Glorfindel, what are you doing?”
NINE!
“I will not let you see out this year without a kiss Erestor.”
EIGHT!
“That is unnecessary Glorfindel, I do not need pity or sympathy.”
SEVEN!
“Never pity Erestor, ‘tis a crime that such beauty has been left so uncared for all these years.”
SIX!…FIVE!…FOUR!
“You think me beautiful?” Erestor asked quietly and with a catch in his throat.
“Unbearably so.” Was the truthful reply.
THREE!
“Glorfindel…”
TWO!

This time it was Glorfindel who interrupted the councillor as he captured the pouting red sweet lips in a gentle first kiss. Both gasped at the contact, distantly there was cheering somewhere in the background. Followed by fireworks, confetti and merry singing. But all went unheard and ignored by the two behind the shadowed pillar.

Glorfindel cupped Erestor’s chin gently with both hands as he kissed the softest lips that he had ever felt pressed against his own. He smiled into the kiss once those perfect lips stopped their trembling and began to shyly dance against his own.

Glorfindel pulled away slowly, as he did so a firework that exploded soundlessly in the sky lit their secluded spot behind the pillar and it was then that his heart stopped. Erestor slowly opened his eyes, dark and sparkling with such…such…he could not quite place it, such gratitude? Happiness? Desire? Yes indeed that was what he saw, but what outshone all of the above was the obvious love that stared back at him. Hesitantly Erestor smiled and the blond exhaled feeling his heart start up again in its rhythmic yet racing pace.

The firework that had lit up and exposed all that the shadows had hidden finally died after its mighty blaze had flickered and sparked until extinguished. When Glorfindel, presently to awe struck by the emotion clear in Erestor’s eyes did not smile back and continued to look at him with confusion and what seemed shock. The smile upon the advisors face slid away. He had let Glorfindel see to much, he had unwittingly and accidentally given himself away. Needing to simply be somewhere where Glorfindel was not Erestor focused upon the ground as he moved to leave the shadowy place. A place where he would usually find such solace now tainted with this, now both moment of infinite happiness and ultimately the place where his heart received its final blow.

It was with pure fear that Erestor looked back to Glorfindel when the warrior would not release his grip and simply pulled the slighter elf back to him.

“May I be the first to kiss you on the dawn of this fine new year?” Not waiting for an answer Glorfindel pulled Erestor back to crush their lips together. Erestor could do naught but except the devastating kiss, as vulnerable and uncertain as he may have been.

Holding Erestor tightly by the upper arms Glorfindel pinned the dark elf against the pillar and kissed him with such passion and fury that the advisors legs gave way beneath him. Glorfindel followed as Erestor fell to his knees, never separating their locked lips.

Upon the floor they were now, kneeling. Glorfindel holding Erestor close to him, plundering and kissing life back into the once fractured heart that had been and was once again so capable of such immeasurable love. With one hand at the advisors slim waist and the other at his neck Glorfindel held him, tenderly yet firmly, for without his grip it seemed that Erestor would flounder. When finally lips parted and breath was granted they leaned heavily upon each other, brows pressed together.

“You should of told me, why did you never tell me?” Glorfindel groaned, thinking of all the time he had wasted with his string of casual lovers, looking for love. When all the time, Erestor had been right there, silently crying out for him.

“I…I thought that if it was meant to be, you would of instantly known you were in love when looking upon me for the first time….like I was with you.” Erestor whispered, ending in a sad hushed tone, still afraid to look Glorfindel in the eye.

Glorfindel lifted a trembling chin to look Erestor squarely in the eye.
“That is not always the way with love Erestor. Love can be bourn out of trust and friendship. The most plainest of elves can appear blindingly beautiful once their true colours are revealed.”

“What…what of me? Do you…could you love me? If not then release me now for I could never simply be a casual lover of yours…it would hurt to much Glorfindel. Do you see my true colours? Do you finally see me?” Erestor ended in a whisper, shaky and laced with fear.

Leaning forward Glorfindel again rested their brows together.
“I see you Erestor, it is to my deepest sorrow and frustration that it is only now that I do. With one exception of course.”

“What is that?” Erestor asked, leaning into the secure hold Glorfindel had on him, tears streaming his cheeks.
“You were *never* plain Erestor, I simply thought you…out of reach.”

Erestor cried out quietly, reaching to wrap his arms about the blonds neck to bring them closer.
“You see me? You truly see me?”
“Erestor, you blind me.” Glorfindel replied, wiping away the now tears of joy, a most bittersweet contradiction. “I’m so glad I finally found you, that I have finally found love.”

Erestor threw his arms around Glorfindel and held on tightly, crying quietly.

“Thank you Glorfindel, for my last, and first kiss.”
“The first of many.” Glorfindel uttered as he drew Erestor back for another kiss, fireworks blazing in the background, but seeming dim compared to the blaze of passion and love, behind that one, shadowed, pillar.

The end.
