Note: I am alive… sort of… I apologize for being gone so long (and I’m not sure how often I’ll be around *sniffle*) but I promise that my current projects are merely on hold at the moment – I will finish Vacation (as soon as Lorien starts speaking to me again), and Troglodytic (when I figure out what I’m going to do… I knew I should have stopped at the prologue, it was suppose to be a snippet darn it all) and Inamorato (I’m planning another part, although it could become a sequel instead) and anything else I had on the go. It’s just going to take a life time and a half to finish them. In the mean time I am writing when I’m able and this is what took control of the keyboard and slapped itself into my word program, I had no control. Hope you enjoy!

Unusual Courtship
Prologue

Several light elven voices floated on the late evening air as they splashed playfully in the chilly lake, the deep laughter of several older elves mixed with that of the younger generation, as they wrestled with each other in the cold water.

Now that spring had once again graced the valley of Imladris it had been suggested that perhaps an evening of recreation was in order. Instead of eating in the dinning hall as usual dinner had been moved to the lake side, where small groups of elves and several couples now sat beneath the night moon and watched as the more adventurous of their kin braved the water that still retained the kiss of winter.

Cheery laughter and calls of encouragement could be heard as the spectators watched from the safety of the shore while Glorfindel took on challengers in the water; an impromptu lesson having been called on how to defend yourself against the enemy when not on dry ground.

Needless to say Glorfindel was doing an excellent job of instruction as he dunked yet another elf beneath the water, only to watch him break the surface a moment later spluttering and glaring good naturedly at the blonde who was laughing along with the others at his plight. Keeping his role of instructor Glorfindel cleared his throat and affected a serious expression.

“And what have you learned from this experience Elrohir?”

“Not to pick a fight with *you* unless it’s on dry ground! Choose an opponent you can defeat, preferably one who is unsuspecting” The cheeky reply was instantly followed by Elrohir attacking his twin and tackling him beneath the water, Elladans cry of shock being cut off as he went under.

Shaking his head and laughing Glorfindel propelled himself backwards a fair distance before laying back completely so he could float atop the water and watch the stars for a moment or two, strands of blonde hair turning to liquid gold as they drifted about him, moving with the small waves of the lake. Hearing his name, muffled by the water lapping around his head and covering his ears, Glorfindel turned to face the shore, being forced to tread water as the lake bottom was no longer within reach. Finding the lake side gathering was preparing to leave he began to swim towards his kin, long arms pulling him quickly forward with powerful strokes.

None noticed the dark figure that watched intently from a short distance, concealed by a large boulder near the small cliff overhang that was often used on warm days for diving. Dark eyes the color of a starless sky tracked the elves as they departed the lake, lingering on the last, the golden one who shone so brightly beneath the moon. He stared unblinking as the last of the elves walked into the trees, away from the water. He continued staring at the entrance to the forest long after the others had left, until the ripples created by their playful antics disappeared and the water once again calmed to the gentle swaying motion brought on by the wind.

Pale hands chilled by the water released their hold on the cool rock and dark eyes slowly closed as the feelings of sadness and loneliness that had been held at bay finally overwhelmed and brought a desperate ache of despair to his chest. Casting one last, longing glance at the now deserted shore a soft gust of air left his lips and he disappeared into the darkness, the moon the only witness to his presence and the quickly fading ripples the only proof of his passing.
