Gimli had loved the elf for a very long time. Nearly forever, as he knew it. Legolas was surprised when the aged dwarf had come to him the night before he planned to leave Ithilein and Middle Earth.

Upon hearing the dwarf's confession, Legolas had knelt and read the truth in his eyes. "How long?" was his only query.
"All these silent years." Gimli had answered.

Legolas had looked at him then, quiet and discerning. Then slowly, ever so slowly, he leaned forward and kissed the dwarf.

It was like a brother's kiss, secure in love and trust. It was like a lover's kiss, timid and young. Legolas drew back. Gimli tried to think what to make of it. "I am not by nature passionate, dwarf." Legolas said softly, shakily.

Gimli reached out and caressed the fine hair, the tip of a delicately pointed ear. Long, graceful fingers tangled in his silver beard. "I find I am too old to be given over to much passion, myself." He replied. Legolas smiled sadly. "Pity."

Gimli shrugged, and released the elf. Legolas kissed him again.

Hours later the low-burning candle fluttered, and went out.

Niether dwarf nor elf noticed.

The next day they set sail. Legolas took Gimli to be the first dwarf to see Valinor, to be with him. Gimli did not refuse.

When the ship on the Anduin tasted the salt of the Sea, the gray boat from Ithilein paused to store the last of fresh water.

Legolas played naked in the sea, like a summer child.
From the deck of the ship, Gimli watched.

Seagulls cried a sad farewell to the last members of the fellowship.
