Chapter One
Too close, Glorfindel thought to himself.
He has been traveling for days and has entered the northern part of the dark forest of Mirkwood. He wished he has never come this close to enemy's territory, but he had no choice. He had to look for Elladan as an unfortunate situation has befallen the young elf.
Elrond's twins had gone for a few weeks for orcs hunting, as they usually did after their mother had left to the west. It was the day when Elrohir returned alone to Imladris, wounded and bleeding severely, and came to bear his father bad news.
They have gotten into the other side of the Misty Mountains, when a large number of orcs confronted them. The fight was fierce, but the orcs were too much and the twins had no choice
but to flee. In their escape they got separated. Elladan, getting lost in the chaos, had gone falsely to the direction of Mirkwood forest while Elrohir had managed to turn towards Imladris. Both of them were wounded and confused, and by the time they realized they were missing each other it was already too late. Elrohir desperately wanted to search for his brother on his own, but was too worn out by his wound, so he decided to go back home and look for help.
It took only a few moments for Elrond to gather some soldiers he could spare to search for his eldest born. Glorfindel himself was going with them, but halfway to Mirkwood they got separated. Glorfindel headed to the north while the soldiers spread out into another direction.
Now as he was roaming over the dark and eerie forest, he wished he had taken some of them with him. The borders of the kingdom were near, and although his keen senses had not detected anything yet, he felt that danger was close.
Sighing wearily, the blond lord tightened his hold on the reign of his horse, Asfaloth, and the master and its mare continued to lurk through the trees.

His body hurt tremendously. Every part of it. His shoulder, which has been stabbed by the orc's arrow, has been bleeding furiously for days and he didn't know how to stop it. The effect of the poison on the cursed arrow had spread through his whole body, made him severelyk, hk, his head dizzy and his sight blurred. His right ankle was broken. His mare, which has been stabbed by multiple orcs arrows, had fallen on him before she lay dead. It was not her fault really, she has loyally carried him so far from the beasts despite her own injuries, and when she died, he had mourned for her.
Elladan knew, if no help came, he will die very soon. Alone and far from home. If it’s not by all the wounds he had already suffered, it will come by the hands of Mirkwood's elves.
He knew this forest, although he had never been here before. This is Mirkwood forest, where its elves, the greatest enemy of Imladris' elves, occupied the land. He didn’t know if he was in the northern part of the forest, but his feeling told him that he was indeed near the kingdom’s borders. How was it that Thranduil's border patrols have not yet located his presence, Elladan did not know.
He leaned back on the trunk of the huge tree he has been sitting on and tried har sup suppress the pain in his body.
All he could think was the Mirkwood elves. His quiver was empty and his bow was long gone, the only weapons he had were his twin knives. If the enemy did show, he will fight them. He will not stand a chance to get out of it alive, not with his already battered body, but he will welcome his death with all his heart. Better to die than to be taken captive by those who he hated so much. Elladan knew if he would be captured, he will make a very valuable ransom, for he is one of the sons of Imladris' Lord.
He snapped out of his thoughts as his still keen hearing picked out something or someone approaching. His body tensed abruptly and his right hand silently sheeted one of his long knives. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The time to defend his honor has come.
The dark haired elf pushed himself up slowly and hissed silently when his whole body screamed in agony from the act. He swayed slightly and put one hand to take a hold on the tree. Pressing his back flatly on the tree, his grip on the knife tightened, and he waited.
That something came into his view. It appeared to be only one man and a horse, walking cautiously and making no sound at all, save for their breaths. Elladan peered carefully through
the tree, relief washed over him when he saw who the approaching figure was.
“Glorfindel"
Glorfindel started at the sound. He swirled around, his hand flew to his sword, ready to face the attacker, only to see Elladan a few feet away staggered on his knees. His legs had failed him. The blond lord rushed to his side, his mare followed closely.
“Elladan"
The youngster looked up at him as he caught the falling body. Glorfindel swallowed hard, seeing the condition his former pupil was in. His shoulder bled like water from a broken dam, his leg looked like it has been twisted, and his face was so pale. The older elf immediately gathered the weak body in his arms.
“Orc arrow stabbed me" Elladan said weakly to his chest with a hitched voice, “It was poisoned. And my leg is broken"
“Where is your horse, Elladan?" Glorfindel asked in worried tone. The twin looked like he would pass out any second.
“She is dead. I left her on the edge of the forest"
“I will bring you home" Glorfindel replied in a soothing voice, “As much as I want to treat your wounds right now, we must make haste. It is not safe here. I will see to it when we get out of the woods"
Elladan nodded, too weak to say anything.
Glorfindel put him on Asfaloth's back and mounted after him, holding him close.
“Did Elrohir make it back?" Elladan askeeanieaning his head into the other's shoulder. He remembered his younger brother at the attack, he has fought a distance away from him, and
when they got apart, the older twin got so worried.
“Elrohir is safe, pen-neth" Glorfindel said, “Wounded, but safe. And you will too, once we get home"
Elladan gave him a small smile. Already the imagination of his house and family strengthened him.
Then Asfaloth turned away and started to walk.
They were strolling on the quiet forest and had reached a small clearing with greasy grass, when suddenly a sound of a continuous keening wail stopped them. It sounded like a hurting bird and it echoed through the massive trees. Asfaloth reared uneasily and looked ready to turn on his heels.
The two elves tensed.
Glorfindel's head turned from side to side, his blond mane swaying as he did so.
“Wood elves, " he announced.
The keening wail they heard was the battle cries of the Mirkwood elves. He had heard it before numerous times. Glorfindel has not seen them yet, but knew they are coming. The wood elves have spotted them and will definitely not let them go.
He dismounted, holding his long bow, and turned to the frightened youngling on the mare.
“Elladan, Asfaloth will take you back" he said hastily, “Ride hard and do not look back. I will stay here and hold them"
“Nay!" Elladan cried out, reaching for his long knife, “I will fight with you. I will not leave you alon
“You are in no condition to fight!" Glorfindel said sternly, “Asfaloth will ride faster if he carries only you on his back. Make it to the borders and you will be safe"
Elladan looked at him, unshed tears in his dark eyes.
“Go, pen-neth, now!" the blond shouted.
“I will come back to get you Glorfindel" Elladan hold the reign. He didn't have any choice but to obey his former mentor.
“Go!" Glorfindel said again, stepping backwards, he whispered to his mare, “Noro lim Asfaloth, faeste"
Asfaloth reared and sprang forward without his master. Tears flowed on Elladan's face as he rode hard on the horse; he did not look back as Glorfindel bid.
"I will come and get you" he repeated the vow silently.
Glorfindel notched an arrow as he took a defensive position, and looked around in alert. He thought he could see them, a brown and green something and blond locks whipped around
behind the trees and bushes.
His senses told him that they surrounded him. The open clearing where he stood did not seem too promising for any escape attempt; he had no choice but to fight them.
Glorfindel took aim and shot an arrow in an accurate speed at the first figure who burst out from behind the bushes.
