“Mad, bad and dangerous to know” – Lady Caroline Lamb on Lord Byron

Their quiet voices were interrupted by a soft thump followed by a loud curse. Haldir turned to see the cause of the ruckus and smiled grimly to himself. She had come after all. For a brief moment, he wondered if she would after the scolding he had given her in Lothlorien.
He had to admit that she had a backbone of mithril and it was one of the reasons he so admired her. His gray eyes followed her as she made her way into the room, greeting old friends and lovers as if she were the reason for this entire gathering, he thought acidly. Elrohir slid up next to her and she let out a delighted laugh and threw her arms around him before spotting Elladan over his shoulder.
Legolas heard the familiar laughter and his dark eyes scanned the room, searching for the source. His eyes met Haldir’s and the March Warden raised a smirking eyebrow. He knew Legolas was searching for the nymph. Legolas looked away, unnerved by Haldir’s steady gaze. Perhaps he had only imagined hearing her voice. It was simply wishful thinking on his part to see his old friend again.
The twins’ father glided into the room and the mood suddenly sobered, all eyes turning toward Elrond in anticipation. “Serious business, this,” Annowe thought to herself, glancing around the room. She was too short to see much but it appeared to be a gathering of Rangers, Elves and creatures like her self. The last time she had witnessed such a gathering was the end of the Second Age during the Alliance of Elves and Men and the thought gave her chills.
Rumors swirled that The Ring had been found and the Dark Lord was rising again. True enough, there had been some strange goings-on lately but she had not put much stock in the rumors. Then Elrond had summoned her to Rivendell and suddenly the rumors seemed not so far-fetched.
“Thank you for answering my summons,” the ancient elf began quietly. “We have a grave business at hand. I am not at liberty to disclose all of the details to you at this time and I would ask your indulgence in this matter. Suffice it to say that our world as we know it hangs in the balance. The Black Riders have been seen again and the smoke rises from Orodruin.”
Anxious glances and mumbled questions were exchanged all around. This was bad news indeed. She clutched Elrohir’s arm in dismay and they looked at each other in consternation.
“What would you have of us?” one of the Rangers cried out loudly.
Elrond spoke in a clear yet low voice over the din. “Each of you will be asked to scour the land for signs or tidings of the Enemy or his agents, especially the Black Riders,” he said. “You will go in groups or pairs to different areas to seek out their activities and gatherings and report back to me.”
The twins traded anxious looks and elvin mutterings over her head. So, it was begun anew. The Dark Lord was gathering his strength and that could not bode well for them. Fleetingly, she wondered where Legolas was. Certainly he should be here as well. Thranduil would have heard the rumors and sent his son as an ambassador to Rivendell.
She sighed deeply and closed her eyes, torn between her desire to see him again and the fear that he would still be angry with her for leaving him. Why did everything have to be so complicated between them? She had spent her entire life around elves but it was only Legolas, curse him, that made her weak in the knees.
Her mind continued to wander as Elrond outlined his plan. Haldir was more than likely here as well she realized and opened her eyes to glace furtively around the room. Thankfully she was shorter than everyone in the room so she could easily hide from the March Warden’s piercing gaze.
As Elrond continued to speak, she slipped away from the twins, her mind made up to find Legolas. She was compelled to see him again, as much as it tore at her. He was her friend and she couldn’t punish him because her carnal desires raged out of control. It certainly wasn’t his fault she found him irresistible.
Slowly, she made her way through the crowd, silently praying that she would not encounter Haldir first. He was quite angry with her and she did not want to cause a scene – especially in front of Legolas. He would never understand.
Legolas spotted a flash of bronze hair in the crowd and his heart skipped a beat. Annowe was there! He knew it! Quietly he made his way toward the gleaming hair, determined to see her again.
The crowd began to murmur as Elrond finished speaking and Legolas quickened his pace. Suddenly, the crowd dispersed, leaving him staring at her dark eyes. For an instant he was taken aback by her presence. Seeing her brought back so many fond memories of their shared adventures and reminded him of how physically desirable he found her.
And then she grinned at him. He laughed. He couldn’t help it. Instantly, she was in his arms hugging him tightly and laughing with delight, all her fears forgotten in his warm embrace. He squeezed her back fondly, glad that she had come and his slight forgotten. He had long since given up trying to explain why he was so drawn to her, content to believe that it was her free spirit and love of life that attracted him.
She stepped back from him and placed one small hand on his cheek. “How are you, Legs?” She asked quietly, her dark eyes still smiling.
He took her hand from his cheek and squeezed it. “Well. And you?”
“Are you two going to stand here all day? We’ve got work to do!” Elladan scolded mildly as he urged the two of them out the door and to the library.

Over the next two days there were many gatherings and meetings as each team prepared to leave on their missions.
Elrond paired her with Legolas and told them to go south along the Great River and scout the area between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood as far south as they were able before early winter. The area was familiar to both of them and they could cover the area quickly and thoroughly.
“It could be worse, young one,” she told him gravely when he grumbled about the mountain pass they would have to traverse.
He grunted and tried to think of something worse than crossing the Misty Mountains in winter. He bit back a smile before he finally answered her.
“Yes, indeed. I could have been stuck with Haldir,” he answered quietly with a straight face.
She lowered her gaze and giggled as the elf in question had a piercing gray eye trained on her. She poked Legolas in the ribs in retaliation for making her giggle and he nudged her in return while Haldir scowled at them both.
