When the city of Los Angeles turned into a scene from Night of the Tornados, Mack and Dom knew it was time to get out.
For days they had sat in their apartment watching the news. After hearing that the temperature was now "“150 degrees in Scotland, Mack had made tea while Dom frantically tried to get a hold of Billy on his cell. When they heard that a tsunami of all things had taken out Manhattan, Mack held Dom while he cried and tried to text Elijah and Hannah. And now they were driving down deserted country roads trying to avoid the traffic crazed highways filled with people heading towards Mexico.
Mack squinted into the setting sun and looked over at Dom.
"See! Aren't you glad that I bought the 4x4 SUV? You're gas efficient car would never had been able to go here."
"Yeah, but my car would get us farther. The gas drums we bought as Costco won't last long," Dom said with his head leaning on the window staring outside.
Mack hummed in reply and turned the satellite radio up trying to ignore the depressed tone in Dom's voice. Mack refused to think about how their world was ending. He was going to look on this as an adventure and not think about all the family and friends that were no doubt dead. If he started thinking about it he wasn't sure that surviving would matter so much anymore. And he was determined that he and Dom would survive this.
"Most of East Texas is flooded after mass thunderstorms and five category 4 hurricanes hit its coast. Waves of 20 feet or more have been sighted and wind speeds are at 170 miles per hour. Deaths in Texas number over 50,000 people and are rising. Volunteers are trying to help get as many survivors to safety as they can. Actor Sean Astin lead a crew of volunteers yesterday in saving many residents of a nursing home who had been abandoned by their doctors and nurses. Astin was ironically enough in Texas to film a movie about the destruction of Galveston after the hurricane of 1900, which up till this point was known as the worst natural disaster in American history. Sadly Astin and a few volunteers are now missing. They went out on a search and rescue in boats late last night and never returned. Astin's wife, Christine, has reported that she still believes that her husband is alive, but that with temperatures dropping rapidly she can no longer wait on him and has crossed the border into Mexico with their two small children where she has faith that her husband will join her. In Arizona we have had reports of hail the size of basketballs"¦" Dom turned the radio down and looked at Mack. Mack had stopped driving as soon as he heard his brother's name and now just sat looking at the radio.
"He's alive." Mack muttered, "I had tried not to think about it. But he's alive."
"He's missing."
Mack turned to look at Dom "He's alive."
Dom looked at Mack "Then I guess we know what we are going to do now."
Mack and Dom pulled into Galveston on fumes.
"Told you there wasn't enough wasn't fuel for this gas-guzzler!"
"But we got here!" Mack said smirking at Dom
Dom smiled at Mack, "Yup we got here. Now what do we do?"
"We save Safety Man!"
"Okay"¦but where do we start."
"We find out where he was last seen."
Mack and Dom walked around the demolished city. The stench of fish and death was thick and made Dom sick. Mack ignored the bit of vomit that was now on Dom's sweater.
"Hey!"
The sudden shout startled both of them and they swiftly turned around to be confronted by an older man"¦with a shotgun. Dom and Mack threw their hands up in the universal sign "˜don't shoot me!'.
"If ya'll are here to loot, you might as well move on. Nothing of any value is left now," said the man still pointing the gun at them.
"No, sir! We aren't here to loot!' said Dom.
"Nope, we are on a mission!" said Mack with a grin on his face.
"A mission?", said the man lowering his gun, "what sort of a mission? Are ya'll Red Cross? Or missionaries?"
"We are on a mission to save Sean As" " said Dom
"Yeah! We are saving Sean Astin!" said Mack and then he turned to Dom. "Dude, that would be a killer title to a movie."
"Mack, I think Spielberg already used it."
"Damn that man! Stealing all my great ideas."
The older man looked back and forth between Mack and Dom as if they had lost it
"Ya'll are here to save Sean Astin? The actor? Ya'll must be big fans."
Mack's face lost a bit of his grin. "He's my brother. I heard on the radio that he had been here, but that he's lost now."
"I'm sorry to hear that, son." The man placed his hand on Mack's shoulder. "My name is Jim Peterson. I met your brother. He was a good man and he saved a lot of people."
"He's not dead! He's just lost. And we are going to find him!" Mack exclaimed.
"Mr. Peterson, do you have any clue where Sean was going when he got lost?" Dom said in a calm voice.
"I believe he was heading out to one of the islands that were made during the last hurricane to search for survivors with 3 other volunteers. If you are serious about wanting to find him I have a boat you can use."
"Thank you sir, but won't nee need it?"
"Nope. I ain't going anywhere. I was born in Texas, lived in Texas my whole life and I buried my wife here. If I'm going to die it's going to be in Texas not somewhere south of the border."
Almost 5 hours later Dom and Mack had searched 3 of the 4 small islands that had popped up around the flooded coast. As they slowly circled the last one they called out his name and looked for any sign of life.
"Mack! There! Do you see something red in the trees?"
Mack steered the boat towards the island and killed the engine.
"Seanie!" Mack shouted "Sean Astin!"
"Hello! ", Dom shouted "Anyone here?"
Together they listened and heard the waves beating against the boat. And then"¦ever so faintly they heard something.
"Here! We are here!"
Mack and Dom could see two men running towards them"¦neither were Sean. They pulled the boat up closer to land.
"Thank god you came!" one of the men gasped as he huffed for breath.
"Is it just the two of you? Anyone else on the island?" Dom asked
"Yeah, we have two more friends back in the trees. One of them has a broken leg and he has a fever."
Mack and Dom looked at each other and then jumped off of the boat and went running into the woods. They found a little makeshift tent.
"Sean? Sean, are you here?" Mack shouted
They heard a groan from inside the tent and they looked inside to see a man with his leg at an angle on a stack of wood. It was not Sean.
Dom turned to Mack and pulled him close and hugged him.
"It's okay. We'll find him. He's out there somewhere and we are going to keep looking till we find him."
"I think you are doing a bang-up job so far," drawled a voice from behind them.
The boys spun around to see the tired, but smiling face of Sean Astin.
"Sean!" they screamed and jumped on him and turned him into the middle of a Dom/Mack sandwich.
"Guys"¦not that I'm not happy to see you, but I'm turning blue here"¦" Sean gasped.
Neither let him go and just hugged harder.
Five minuets later when they were able to let go they filled Sean in on what had happened and how they came to be in Texas. Sean was relieved to hear that Christine had taken Aly and Elizabeth to Mexico and safetyDom and Mack helped carry the injured man to the boat and they head back inland.
Once there Mack and Dom sat outside a building while Sean found gas for the truck so they could head south to warmer temperatures.
"Hey Dommie"¦"
"Hey Mackie"¦"
Mack looked at Dom.
"You know we don't have to go with Sean."
"Where else would we go?" Dom looked back at Mack
"Well, I did train for sub-zero temperatures for Iron Will"¦and I've heard that New York is lovely this time of year."
Dom looked at Mack with a stunned expression and then a delighted grin.
"Saving Elwood?"
"Saving Elwood!"
Dom reached around Mack's neck and pulled him in for a kiss.
