Chapter 1: Luck Be A Lady Tonight

Aragorn motioned for his companions to dock their boats on the Western shore.

“We cross the lake at nightfall, hide the boats, and continue on foot. We approach Mordor from the north.” Aragorn said.

“Oh, yes? Just a simple matter of finding our way through Emyn Muil? An impassable labyrinth of razor-sharp rocks? And after that, it gets even better! Festering, stinking marshlands, as far as the eye can see!” Gimli said with a snort.

“That is our road. I suggest you take some rest and recover your strength, Master Dwarf.” Aragorn told him.

“Recover my... pfft...” Gimli mumbled.

“We should leave now.” Legolas said his eyes scanning the trees around them.

“No. Orcs patrol the eastern shore. We must wait for the cover of darkness.” Aragorn said.

“It is not the eastern shore that worries me. A shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind. Something draws near. I can feel it.” The elf said.

“The hobbits need est, est, come, if it will ease your mind you and I shall have a look around the woods. Boromir and Gimli can stay with the halflings.” Aragorn suggested.

Legolas nodded and started toward the woods as Aragorn spoke briefly to Gimli and Boromir. When they nodded Aragorn joined Legolas at the edge of the trees.

“You go right, I’ll take left.” Legolas suggested.

Aragorn nodded. “The sun sets soon, we’ll meet back here then.”

Legolas nodded and they weheirheir separate ways.

The elf prince hadn’t been walking very long when he felt something approaching. He spun in a slow circle and saw that Ten Orcs surrounded him and they were closing in on him fast. He used his bow to kill six of them before they were upon him. He pulled his swords from their sheaths and dispatched three more then his knee was struck from behind by the final opponent and he fell to the ground. Legolas moved quickly, rolling to his side, ready to kick the orc as soon as it was close enough but he looked up just in time to see an arrow strike the thing perfectly between it’s eyes. It collapsed with a thump. Legolas looked around, expecting to see Aragorn but instead he was greeted with the sight of a beautiful female elf. She stood tall and proud, bow still quivering form her well-placed shot. Long straight hair the color of a Raven flowed down her back to her slender waist. She started toward him, startling green eyes darted in all directions searching for more enemies. Her clothes were simple, dark brown pants, dark green tunic. His eyes went back to her face as she drew near, creamy white skin, high delicate cheekbones, she was magnificent. The closer she got the more cautious she became, she stopped several feet away from him.

“Lle quel? (Are you well?)” She asked softly, looking him over for injuries.

He nodded. “Diola lle. (Thank you.)”

“Lle creoso. (You’re welcome.)” She began to back away, her eyes once again searching the surrounding area for trouble.

“Where are you going?” He asked, slipping into the language of the humans to see if she understood it.

She only shrugged so Legolas wasn’t sure if she’s hadn’t understood or if she didn’t know where she was going.

“You shouldn’t camp out here alone.”

She laughed quietly. “I can take care of myself.”

“So I noticed.” Legolas said glancing down at the corpse at his feet.

“Then perhaps you could help me. I’m traveling with a band of friends, trying to complete a mission but many stand in our way. I think we could use your skills.”

She looked at him for a moment then nodded. “Let’s meet these friends of yours first. Then we shall see. I am Emalin.”

“Legolas.” He said and took her hand, watching her eyes as he kissed her knuckles lightly. Her eyebrows went up and amusement filled the bright moss orbs beneath. Legolas smiled briefly then gla at at the hand he still held, he stared at it for a moment then let go.

“Such chivalry.” Emalin said with a chuckle then she sobered. “Wait a moment. Legolas. I have heard that name before. You are the prince of Mirkwood.”

Legolas nodded stiffly then turned. “It’s almost sun set, I have to get back. Will you be joining me?”

“I suppose.” She murmured. She followed him to the shore silently.

The Fellowship went quiet as they looked over the new arrival. Aragorn had already rejoined them.

“This is Emalin.” Legolas said. “I was attacked by Orcs in the forest, she saved me.”

“You had to be saved by a woman?” Boromir said with a smirk from where he sat on the ground. “I had thought better of you than that.”

Before anyone could react, even Legolas, Emalin had drawn her bow and released an arrow. It landed between Boromir’s legs, a mere breath from his manhood.

“Perhaps you would think better of women if I made you ” Em” Emalin asked reaching for another arrow.

Boromir jumped to his feet and turned red as the rest of his companions began to laugh.

“I don’t believe that’s necessary.” Aragorn said. “Welcome.”

Introductions were made and Aragorn pulled Legolas to the side as the hobbits surrounded Emalin and bombarded her with questions.

“You want her to join us?” the man asked.

Legolas nodded. “I believe she’s meant to. Before we left Lorien Galadriel spoke with me. She said that I would be saved by a warrior, that the warrior would once again complete the Fellowship, make us nine again.”

“How can you be sure that Emalin is who she spoke of. Just because she made a few good shots with a bow does not make her a warrior.”

“She shot an orc from 60 perhaps 70 paces. I know very few who can accomplish that so easily. And Galadriel said the warrior's finger wou would be dipped in darkness, look at her hands.”

Aragorn glanced at the elven girl, her fingernails were colored black with some sort of paint. He nodded. “If she wishes to join us, so be it.”

Legolas went to speak with Boromir and Gimli about the new addition and Aragorn began to make a fire so the hobbits, who were always hungry it seemed, could make something to eat. He moved to where the hobbits were still interrogating the woman and began to build a pile of wood.

“Where did you learn to shoot like that?” Frodo asked.

“My father was a healer, as am I. I’ve spent most of my life on battlefields tending to the wounded and war grounds aren’t exactly the safest places so I had to learn to defend myself and those I was trying to help.” Emalin said, Aragorn watched as her eyes kept glancing to where Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir were. With elven hearing he was sure she knew what was being said and it wasn’t all good by the look of indignation in her eyes.

"So, Emalin..." Sam began.

The elf maid interrupted him. "You can call me Ema."

"Ok, Ema, are you going with us now. To Mordor." The hobbits had told her exactly what they were trying to accomplish.

"I don't know yet. I have to think about it."

"Alright, alright. On to the important things." Merry said. "Can you cook?"

Ema's laughter rang out like tinkling bells.
