Solicitude

Title: Solicitude
Chapter 1
Author: Frosty the Savannah Monitor
Contact: elvendemagogue@yahoo.com
Summary: LOTR OC. Legolas and company stumble upon someone new.
Disclaimer: Borrowed only.
Author's Notes: I started this waaaay back in 2001, when I had a nasty, nasty cold. I felt the need to finish it, so that's what I'm doing. Quickly. And with as much melodrama as possible.
Author's Notes #2: This isn't a fic like the other fics I write. There's no la-la-land sex in here. I wrote this for myself. And it'll most likely be a very short story. R & R please, I'd like to know if I should make an effort to continue it in plausibility, or just let it die.

She lay in the forest, on the soft green ground, surrounded by the bodies of her comrades. Her heavy breaths rang in her ears, her strength seeped from her body, and she closed her eyes tightly, awaiting the darkness that plagued her.

Even the birds had left the area where the battle had taken place. The air was silent, save for her own ragged draws of life.

A soft footfall invaded the dense sound in her ears. Not one of her people had survived, so she supposed it was one of the enemy, realizing she had not fallen in battle, and wishing to rid the Earth of her life.

A gentle finger brushed her hair from her face and felt for her pulse. She swallowed heavily, and the figure above her pulled her over on her back. She fought to open her eyes, but the blinding light of the sun forced them to remain shut.

"Can you hear me?" came the soft voice, and she slowly nodded. Her eyes fluttered, adjusting to the light, and she felt the familiar hand on her face, brushing the dirt from her skin.

"What's your name?" the voice asked, and she winced, pain flowing through her body as she tried to speak.

"Lia," she whispered, her voice strained. She managed to open her eyes and look at the man who had come to her. Curious dark blue eyes met hers.

"Can you get up, Lia?" he asked, taking her hand. She nodded and he pulled her effortlessly to her feet.

She lost her balance and fell against him, but quickly regained her composure. "Sorry," she said, looking up at him. She could see him clearly now. His golden hair shone in the sunlight, and his soft features reminded her of a race she had not seen in a long while. She turned her head to look at his ears, amilemiled, for he was what she had hoped.

"You're an elf," she said, and he smiled.

"Yes," he replied, "I am called Legolas. Can you walk?"

"I think so," she said, taking a small step. Legolas' hands hovered near her body, ready to catch her if she stumbled.

She didn't know where they were going, but she trusted the one she was with. His eyes watched over her carefully, obviously worried about her condition. She smiled slightly at that. No one had looked at her that way in a long time.

Her heart was heavy as she stepped around the fallen forms of the people she had fought with. All were dead, save for her.

She stopped and looked to the bodies. Legolas stopped with her, watching her ever closely. "Why did I not die with them?" she asked, not expecting a response.

"You have been spared," he replied, and she looked at him. His eyes were warm with honesty. "There is no dishonour in that."

Tears formed at her eyes. "It still pains me," she said, walking with Legolas towards their destination.

"The grief will pass, if you give it time," he said, then noticed her gait, "Are you injured?"

"I'll be fine," she said, smiling.

They walked down a hill towards the beach. The wood opened into a clearing, and she saw two other men. They looked up at her arrival.

"Aragorn," Legolas said to the approaching human, "I found her whilst looking for firewood. There has been a battle...she is the only survivor.\
"
"Of what army do you serve?" he asked, looking her over.

"I come from Hanna, a separate state of Gondor," she replied. "I serve my country."

A dwarf came to stand beside the human. "What army were you fighting?" he asked.

"No army. We fought Orcs." Her eyes became hard at her words.

"Hanna is more than twelve days journey from here," said Legolas, "She is injured. Perhaps she could remain with us until she has healed."

The dwarf grunted. "I am Aragorn," spoke the human, "And this is Gimli. You are welcome to stay with us, if you are prepared for the journey."

"Where is it you are headed?" she asked.

"We are going to Mordor to rescue part of our fellowship," said Aragorn, sitting down beside the fire.

Legolas gently helped Lia down to the ground. "You are the Fellowship of the Ring," she said, looking to each person. "I have heard of you. What has happened to the rest of your company?"

"The Orcs have taken two of the hobbits," said Gimli, sharpening his axe, "And the other two have gone on their own."

"The ring has a powerful force to it," said Legolas, tending to a cut on Lia's arm, "It was best for the fellowship to split."

Lia licked her lips and sighed. "You are now on a mission of rescue, then?"

"One will we succeed in completing!" grinned Gimli.

Lia smiled. "I am honoured to accompany." ."

"You should get some rest," said Legolas, "we have an early morning."

Lia nodded and settled against a rock. It wasn't long before she fell into darkness.
