Disclaimer:
I do not own the Lord of the Rings (and associated) book series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Prologue
Title: The Healing of Elves and Trees
Author: Eliza 422 (eliza_422@hotmail.com)
Pairing: Elrohir/Haldir (eventually), Elladan/Legolas
Rating: R
Summary: AU Story. Elrohir and Celebrian are captured by orcs. They survive the attack but Elrohir is changed. Will he ever recover from what he has experienced?
Disclaimer: Everything belongs to JRR Tolkien.
Author's note: I wanted to lay out the AU elements up front so people know what to expect.
This is definitely an alternate universe story. Here are the changes I have made to Tolkien's canon:
The capture of Celebrian has been changed to include Elrohir.
The twins, who would have been over 2000 years old at the time of Celebrian's capture, are much younger than that - they are only about 500 years old.
I have Haldir being very young at the time of the last alliance - only about 100 years old. He is related to Celeborn.
Finally, there are two aspects of the story that are extremely significant - gender and healing.
This gender concept is something I've been tinkering with in my own mind for quite a while.
The healing concepts I have also been working out in my own mind for a while.
Gender
**I have made up the word ellian - I know nothing about the elvish language**
The elves actually have 3 genders, although the outside world doesn't really know abut the third one. About 10 percent of the population of elves are ellian, or hermaphrodites. When born, these elves are indistinguishable from males (which account for 60% of births), and therefore named and always referred to in the masculine gender. It is only at puberty that their female sexual characteristics emerge. They are usually as tall as their male brethren, but tend to be more slender, less broad-shouldered, and have androgynous faces. They won't be as strong as men, but will be more swift and agile and thus equal in battle. They are extremely beautiful and are hotly pursued by both male and female elves. They usually grow their hair longer than males (shoulder blade length) but not as long as females (buttocks) - to the waist, normally. No one is able to predict which males will grow up to be ellian.
Their male organs are fully functional. They are slightly smaller, on average, than those of a man, and can be retracted into their body.
Their female organs are fully functional. If they conceive and give birth, they will grow small breasts that remain until the baby is weaned, and their male organs remain retracted until that time.
The other peoples of middle earth are in general not aware of these elves, and just consider them androgynous males. An unfortunate exception to that rule is the orcs, as they are made from elves they have the same gender lines.
In this story, amongst the hero characters Elrohir and Legolas are ellian; all other elves are men or women.
**NOTE: although this obviously leaves open the possibility of this turning into an mpreg, it won't!
Healing
I have interpreted healing to encompass certain elements. There is an actual healing ability that healers have that consists of them transferring life energy from themselves into the patient and directing that energy to the wound / affected area to heal it. They do this energy transfer by touch - usually one hand on the forehead of the victim and one as close to the injured are as possible.
Healers are trained extensively in anatomy and physiology because their healing is only mildly effective when they don't know the biology behind the problem. For example, to heal a stab wound to the arm the healer needs to know what healthy muscle, bone, and skin look like. The training a healer goes through is to learn what the body should look like so that they know how to direct the energy.
In a triage situation, a healer would only apply as much energy as needed to prevent death, not necessarily completely heal. They would stop bleeding, or repair ruptured organs, but they wouldn't carry the healing to completion. Any use of healing ability drains life force that needs to be replenished. Theoretically a healer could expend so much energy he would die. If there are many injured and hurt people a healer could only do so much.
