"I don't quite understand what you meant."
"That's ridiculous. Tell me you don't want it if that's what it is. But
don't play me for a fool."
"Orli,I really..."
"Enough,Viggo."
Viggo fell silent. He sat on the couch again. Looked around. His house.
The house he had rent while in New Zealand. Not really his house. And
everything just looked so weird to him. So unfamiliar. Even though he was
in New Zealand for a while it still felt unfamiliar. He didn't know what
to do anymore. He felt so lonely. A heavy breath caught his attention
again.
Orli's breath.
There were his friends, sure. They were always there for him. Especially
Orli. All of them loved him. Didn't they?
Then why was he feeling so lonely lately? Everyone was around Viggo,
everyone loved him more than he imagined. But Viggo didn't realize it.
There was Orli. Since they had met they had felt a strong connection. So
that they were really close as friends. Orli was always seeking for
Viggo's companionship. Orli loved him like a father. Or that was what
Viggo thought. Like a father.
"I'm leaving."
"Orli...!"
Viggo couldn't say anything more. The younger man had left. The shut of
the door was unmistakable.
He had left. Viggo had never seen Orli so out of his mind. He was drunk,
of course. They had left the pub together and Orli insisted on going home
with Viggo. The older man was tired and needed sleep. But Orli had insisted muc much that Viggo had agreed.
Then that weird conversation. Something about need, and care,and...what
had Orli said? He had said security. That he felt really secure around
Viggo. That he needed more than that. More than what they shared.
"What do you mean by 'more',Orli?"
"Viggo," Orli took a deep breath. "I'm in love with you."
Damn.
"Orli, you're drunk. Please. You really drank too much this night,I noticed
it. Go to sleep and we can talk tomorrow,ok" Vi" Viggo didn't believe Orli
was saying things coherently that time in the night. Little did he knew
that drinking only made Orli feel...less embarassed to say things.
Orli couldn't believe his ears.
"Did you listen to what I've just said?"
"Yeah,I did. And I realized that you were drunker than I had imagined."
"You're playing me for a fool,Viggo? I may be drunk,but I know what I'm
saying. And what I'm saying is the truth."
"I don't quite understand what you meant."
"That's ridiculous. Tell me you don't want it if that's what it is. But
don't play me for a fool."
"Orli,I really..."
"Enough,Viggo."
----
//You cried, I died
I should have shut my mouth, things headed south
As the words slipped off my tongue, they sounded dumb//
Orli was crying. He couldn't go home. He had seated on Viggo's door and
started crying. He remembered all the good times they had shared as
friends. Just friends, but the memories were wonderful all the same. Being
with Viggo was really different from everything he had known. Viggo was
an artist. He loved painting and writing and enjoyed being alone. Only
Orli managed to keep him company. Viggo didn't want anyone else around
him whenever he wanted to be alone. But even if he wanted or needed to
be alone,he never pushed Orli away. Orlando was as nervous and excited
as his age could tell, but he knew how to respect a person's need of
calmness. And as Viggo needed it more than often,Orli just sat there
with him, watching him paint or write. He read a book, reviewed his lines,
but never bothered Viggo when he needed his silent hours. Anyway,he
always wanted to be with Viggo, even if not to talk.
And Viggo just let him stay. He loved Orli's companionship. And Orli was
always thrilled to see how Viggo was sensitive and introspective. So
different from himself. He had changed after meeting the older guy.
Sometimes he didn't go out with the hobbits and stayed with Viggo, just
watching while he was working on the canvas or writing.
Orli admired him dearly.
That was why he was feeling so helpless now. It seemed Viggo didn't love
him the same way. Orli was in love. He was sure of that. Even drunk,he
just knew it.
But Viggo wasn't in love with him.
---
//If this old heart could talk, it'd say you're the one//
Viggo had opened the small verandah's door and felt the fresh night air
on his face. A single tear was falling and he smiled bitterly to himself.
Where could be Orli now?
//I should have drove all night
I would have run all the lights
I was misunderstood
I stumbled like my words, did the best I could
I 'm hanging outside your door
I've been here before
Misunderstood//
Viggo was going back to the living room when he heard crying. On his
door. Heart beating madly,he opened it and Orli was there, helpless like
a small child who had just been slapped.
"Oh,Orli..." Viggo knelt on his side and hugged him tightly. They stood
there for a long time,Orli sobbing on Viggo's shoulder and Viggo soothing
him, caressing his back and his hair.
"Shhh..." Viggo put a hand on Orli's mouth when he tried to speak. "Come."
Orli stumbled while trying to get on his feet and Viggo caught him. They
looked at one another. The look on Orli's face was so sad that Viggo
felt his heart twitch on his chest.
"Did you really mean it,Orli?"
Orli didn't reply. No,he didn't need to hear anymore. Viggo didn't love
him, okay. He would deal with it.
"Just let me go to sleep,Vig. I know what you're going to say."
"Do you?"
"Yeah. Thanks for catching me. But I don't wanna talk, okay?"
Orli let go of Viggo's arms, though it took him all his will, and went to
the room he used to sleep whenever he stopped by Viggo's house. He fell
soundly on the bed and closed his eyes.
//It's you and I, just think about it...//
Viggo's voice startled him. Orlando turned to the side and saw his friend
knelt on the side of the bed, watching him. And he had spoken something:
"I am afraid."
Orli sat on the bed and looked at him. Their gazes locked and suddenly
they realized that couldn't look anywhere else but the eyes of one another.
Orli was confused,Viggo could say. And so the older man spoke:
"I'm not perfect Orli. I know you think I am. But I'm not. I understood
what you meant earlier. But I just didn't want to deal with it."
"Why?" Orli asked almost childshly.
Viggo took a deep breath.
"Because I'm in love with you too,Orli."
Orli's heart was beginning to pound madly. His lips trembled and his eyes
were locked with Viggo's. Viggo noticed the change in him. Smiled. Orli
smiled nervously.
"It's just that...we're so different,Orli. I'm much older than you. I'm
lonely and quiet, you are so full of life and all...it's not gonna work,
much as I wanted it to. As we want it to."
Suddenly Orli understood what Viggo was feeling. He was afraid because
he was in love too. Orli left the bed and sat in front of Viggo. Traced
Viggo's cheeks with his thumbs.
"We're not different,Viggo. We're different on the outside. Our tastes
and our habits. But I think we want the same from life. That's why we're
such good friends. That's why we should be more than that."
Viggo was feeling the wetness on his cheeks again. He was crying. That
was why he loved Orli. He was not a dumb youngster who only wanted to
do all the women and drink all night. Orli drank, but who didn't?
And he understood things. He wasn't shallow. He knew what to say and how
to do it.
"Since the first time I met you I knew we were alike,Viggo. But we have
to look deeper to know it. We seem to be totally different. But we are
not. If we were,we would not be friends."
"Best friends," Viggo added.
"Yeah," Orli smiled.
Viggo took one of Orli's hands on his. Kissed it. Orli smiled shyly and
kissed Viggo's tears away.
"Don't cry,love. I'm here. I'll always be with you."
Viggo couldn't repress any feelings anymore. He took Orli's face with his
hands and kissed him full on the lips. Orli responded eagerly, throwing
his arms on Viggo's neck. Their tongues found each other easily, and they
moaned softly. They kissed passionately, hungrily and found there were
no better place for them now.
They were together.
They broke the kiss, needing air. Looked at each other, both of them panting.
Viggo caressed Orli's face, and the young one closed his eyes and leaned
into the caress. He then embraced Viggo tightly.
"I love you," Orli whispered, hotly against Viggo's neck.
Viggo kissed him again, hands entangled on Orli's hair, and said between
their moist lips, looking at Orli's chocolate eyes:
"I love you too,Orli. I love you so much..."
Orli grinned and stood up fastly. He took Viggo's hands on his,and spoke:
"Bed?"
"Oh yes," Viggo grinned as well. "Definitely."
