Tonight and Any Other

Title: Tonight and Any Other [Part 1/?]
Author: Silvertree (Megumi Takahashi)
Rating: NC-17
Pairings: Legolas/Haldir, eventual Legolas/Aragorn and Celeborn/Haldir
Setting: Pre-LotR
Description: As a new chapter in Legolas' life opens, he and Haldir must ask questions and seek answers about themselves and each other. To make matters more complicated, when Legolas meets a young human, events Celeborn showed Haldir in Galadriel's mirror begin to fall into place.
Disclaimer: I don't own them, but I sure wish I did. Arwen wouldn't be around, for starters, and there'd be a lot more scenes with naked Elves. Oh, and Gimli would abandon his traditional Dwarvish garb for a tutu and toe shoes.

"There long the golden leaves have grown upon the branching years,
While here beyond the Sundering Seas now fall the Elven-tears.
O Lórien! The Winter comes, the bare and leafless Day;
The leaves are falling in the stream, the River flows away."

-Galadriel's Song of Eldamar

-----

Sunlight filtering in through the thick canopy of the forest mottled the surface of the still pool. The motionless waters had remained undisturbed for so long that they were as clear as a flawless crystal, and one looking towards the bottom of the pool would be able to distinguish individual pebbles and grains of sand. Masses of sweet-smelling white flowers cascaded on vines from the trees and clung to damp rocks around the clearing, filling the air with their fragrant perfume.

The beauty was lost upon the two figures seated at the base of a magnificent oak tree. The more slender of the two was counting arrows, and the taller was writing something in a leather-bound book with a quill. Then, abruptly, he stopped, and set the book and quill to one side.

"Is it true?"

Returning the arrows to their quiver, the other Elf nodded his head.

"It is."

Haldir of Lórien sighed and turned to face his younger companion. Sharp grey eyes were made soft with sorrow, and Haldir reached out to pluck a flower from a patch that grew nearby. His hands fell into his lap and he began shredding the flower absently, thin strips of white petal dropping to the soft velvet of his black leggings.

"How soon must you leave?"

Legolas looked at the waters of the pool, and replied softly.

"At the end of the week."

The mutilated flower fell from Haldir's hands, and he turned to face Legolas, anguish stamped upon his features.

"That is less than two days hence! Surely you can remain here for another month, at least!"

A sigh forced itself from Legolas' throat, and he shook his head. One slender hand came to rest upon Haldir's; the slim fingers were seized in a grip that communicated pain and loneliness.

"I wish I could, dear Haldir, but it cannot be. Thranduil has sent a message requesting that I return within the next few days. My Lú o Galad [1] draws near; haste is of the essence. The seasons are turning, and I must arrive in the kingdom of my father before they do."

Haldir rose to his feet, and he pulled Legolas with him. One arm sneaked down to encircle the smaller Elf's waist, while Haldir's other hand came to brush a few strands of hair behind Legolas' ear. He continued to run his fingers through the Prince's hair, eyes drinking in the beauty of the face before him.

"I am to lose you to your father then, Legolas Silverarrow?" It was meant as a joke to lighten the atmosphere, but instead Haldir felt pain tug at his heart. With a sudden ferocity, he clutched Legolas to his own body, holding him there for long moments. Hot tears overflowed, streaming down his face to soak into long ash-blond hair. He felt as if half of his own soul were being torn away, never to be returned.

"Haldir..."

The soft call of his own name brought Haldir back, and pulling away from Legolas, he wiped the tears from his face with his sleeve. Forcing a smile onto his face, Haldir placed a gentle hand on Legolas' shoulder.

"When next I see you, I won't be able to call you that. You will be a grown one, numbered among the Elven warriors and bearing a new name."

Legolas smiled slightly, and wrapped his arms around Haldir. He let his head fall to rest on the other Elf's shoulder; Legolas had still not reached his full height. His slender fingers brushed over Haldir's golden locks, so similar to his own, thick and clean.

"Haldir, I would not leave were the choice my own. But even though I will be gone, my feelings for you will not change. Besides, it is but one year, and what is so short a period of time to an Elf?"

Taking Legolas' face in his hands, Haldir looked into the deep blue eyes. He bent forward and pressed his lips to the high forehead, gently brushing his fingers over high cheekbones.

"To most, nothing. But to me, without you, it is ten thousand centuries ten times over."

Slender fingers captured larger, rougher ones, and Legolas brought Haldir's hand to his own breast. The taller Elf could feel his young lover's heart beating strongly and swiftly, and he felt his own doing the same within his chest. Legolas looked unusually solemn, and his voice rang clear and firm.

"I promise you, Haldir, that I will return after a year has passed. Only something of this magnitude could keep me from you, and even then I would be drawn away against my will."

So saying, Legolas pressed his lips to Haldir's. The Elf's mouth opened easily under his and he plundered the warm cavern greedily, tracing his tongue over flesh already mapped in his mind. The pair kissed until the need for oxygen outweighed their passion, and they broke apart, panting. Legolas fell into Haldir's embrace again, and sighed with pleasure as the strong arms encircled him once more.

"In a few days, I shall enter a phase of my life in which I shall not know the touch of another for a full cycle of the seasons. Will you come to me this night, that I may have something to carry with me, to help me through what lies ahead?"

Haldir nodded, and rested his head atop Legolas'. The pair stood there in the forest glade, neither moving, for what seemed like hours. The scent of the flowers floated around them, and Haldir's eyes fell closed.

"This night, and any other you ask."
