Sayri had never seen her father in such a state before
this day and she had seen her father angry, annoyed or
frustrated many, many times. But, as she stood
chatting with Thole outside of the main hallway before
the entrance to the Royal chambers, she was almost
frightened when her father came bursting out of the
private chambers behind them, rushed up towards the
head house elf, grabbed him by the collar with both
hands, and jerked him nearly off of the floor as he
growled, "Where is she?"
Thole's eyes shifted back towards the private area as
he dithered out, "She? Your highness? Do you mean the
elleth, Tulare? Oh, she, she should be in your room,
your majesty, at least she was there the last time I
looked."
"Which was when?" demanded the King with tight lips
and clenched jaw.
"M, m, m, moment ago, Sire, right before..." he
stopped mid-sentence clearly afraid to say anything
further.
"Right before what?" said the king after tightening
his grip on the shaking elf's tunic front? Thole
fairly danced on tip toe and Sayri wondered if her
father was going to strike the loyal house elf and if
she should try to prevent it or if she would even
dare.
"Th, th, th, the...Arthame's house elf, Averfad, she
was here trying to get a peek at the maiden, but I
shooed her away, your highness,” Thole looked to
Sayri with desperation in his fear maddened eyes but
Thranduil calmed down immediately and relaxed his grip
slightly.
"So," he said with relief in his suddenly softer
voice, "she has gone home to her mother, that is
good." A slight grimace passed swiftly over his
features before he continued, "Go, immediately, and
give my apologies to Tulare and her mother for not
returning her sooner, as I meant, and tell them they
have nothing to fear. Then go find Arthame; I want a
word with him." He released Thole who happily backed
out of the hallway while bowing repeatedly and
yammering, "Yes, your highness, right away, your
majesty..." and then turned to flee down the stairs
towards the common living areas.
Thranduil turned to his daughter, who willed her face
to be as bland and innocent as possible, and peered
closely into her eyes. "Why do I have the feeling
that you had something to do with this?" he asked
gently. Sayri looked at the floor, then at her hands,
then at his chest, then back to the floor as she knew
she could never lie to her father but she was afraid
to tell him the truth about her part in the elleth's
disappearance. He tucked a bent forefinger under her
chin and lifted her face to his. "Sayri?" he said
softly.
"Father," Sayri blurted out once she looked into his
eyes, "the wood elf said she just wanted to see Tulare
so she could go back and tell her mother that she was
not being harmed. I had no idea she was going to take
her home but I am glad that she did." Sayri jutted
her chin at the king who could not stay angry long with
his little elf princess. He chuckled at her youthful
defiance and was happy to find that at least one of
his children was willing to thwart him when he was
being unreasonable. He ruffled her raven tresses and
hugged her to him briefly. It was mainly due to her
that he had changed his mind about holding the elleth
prisoner for when he watched Tulare first rejecting
and then enjoying her breakfast earlier that day; she
had reminded him too much of his daughter and her
similar childish eating habits and his sexual desire
had been dampened accordingly.
"You're heart is still too soft, melamin, for such
intrigues. You are too easily fooled by a sad story or
a long face for a proper princess with serious royal
duties to perform about my kingdom, I will have to
figure out a way to toughen your skin without breaking
your playful spirit," he teased her with a mock
sternness in his voice for they both knew he would
never lift a finger to harm her or frighten her.
They were turning to enter the private areas once
again when Thole came rushing up behind them, his face
pale and agitated, with disturbing news, "She is not
with her mother, Sire, and her mother has not seen the
wood elf since last evening and was not even aware of
her desire to gain entrance and visit Tulare let alone
complicit in any plans to rescue her." Thranduil's
eyes glittered suddenly while he looked about
anxiously as if he would find the elleth and her housemaid
standing in plain sight nearby.
"She is probably hiding somewhere within the caverns
in fear, not that I blame her, please send a small
search party around to find her. I do not want a big
fuss being made, just a few clever elves should do,
and tell them if they find her to deliver her safely
to her mother with my compliments." Thole raced off
while Thranduil took Sayri by the shoulders and drew
her into the royal chambers along side of him. They
entered his private rooms and he sat her down on the
long padded bench beside the fireplace and stood in
front of her for a moment in silence. Finally he
said, "Sayri, did the elf maiden tell you what she was
planning to do with Tulare?"
"Only that she was worried about her because she had
never spent a night away from her own bed before and
that her mother had cried all night for fear her
daughter would be kept prisoner forever and she would
never see her again." Sayri was confused over her
father's concern for the young elleth who obviously
ran away at the first chance she was given. Most of
the other elleths who her father entertained within
his sleeping chambers had to eventually be removed
physically afterwards or they would have stayed
forever if they had their own say in the matter. At
the very least they had all been spared the usual
tearful pleas for permission to stay just a bit longer
in the presence of the king from one of his female
guests? She looked up at him puzzled while he
remained again silent before her for a moment as if
lost in thought before sitting beside her and taking
one of her small hands into his own.
"Cried all night..." he repeated softly to himself.
He looked at Sayri, "But how could she know this if
the mother had not seen either of them...?" he stopped
as he realized his daughter did not need to be
involved in this situation any more than she already
had been. "Never mind, " he smiled and stood, "Thole
will find her, and return her, of that I have no doubt;
are you hungry? Have you lunched?" He clapped his
hands and the room was soon swarming with serving
elves and plates were laid and the candles upon the
dining table were lit. Sayri breathed a sigh of
relief at the return to normal afternoon activities
and she happily sat at her place while her father
paced silently before platters of food large enough to
feed a small army were brought in and set out before
m.
m.
But Sayri could tell all through the meal that her
father was distracted and irritable and she ate
silently and watched him with growing concern. She
sent up silent prayers to the Valar that the elf
maiden would be found and delivered home safely so
that her father would relax and enjoy his private
peaceful time alone with her. He scowled often into
his wine goblet and picked at his plate and she sighed
loudly several times without catching his attention.
It was most disturbing. She kept reminding herself
that it was only a matter of time before they heard
good news while she felt increasingly guilty over her
deliberate misbehavior. Keeping Thole occupied long
enough for Averfad to slip into the forbidden area to
pay a quick visit with Tulare had seemed harmless
enough at the time but the consequences were starting
to alarm her as her father sank deeper and deeper into
a gloomy silence.
Hours passed but Thole did not find Tulare and neither
did any of the other searchers who peeked and poked
into every corner and hole that they could find while
they padded quietly up and down the long tunnels and
steep stairways with torches in hand. It was evening,
and the sunlight that poured into the King's private
rooms in great, mote filled circles during the day,
grew dim and bluish when the last of the search party
returned to report they had had no success in locating
either Tulare or Averfad. The only other thing to
report was the theft of a small river craft that had
been tied to the docking area in the underground
loading area for the River Running, which flowed
beneath the kingdom. But Thranduil did not have time
to ponder this latest clue before Thole announced that
Arthame had been located and was waiting in the King's
throne room as directed.
"Maybe he has information about this mystery that I am
not privy to..." muttered the king as he took his
leave of his daughter and went to speak with his
former treasurer.
Sayri returned to her own private rooms and ate her
evening meal alone. She wished Legolas would return
soon as he would be able to explain her father's
unusual behavior to her, she was sure of that, and
possibly help Ada find his missing elf maiden.
She had tried to say more than just a "welcome home"
greeting to him when he and the Ranger twins had made
their brief stop to home the night before. She had
managed to throw her arms about his neck and give him
quick kisses on his cheek before he gently unwrapped
her arms and introduced her to his grinning, dark
haired companions. She had never before met the sons
of Elrond, or Elrond himself for that matter, but the
legend of their relentlessly fierce and unending noble
pursuit of orcs to slaughter, after the mistreatment
of their fair mother, Celebrain, at their beastly
hands, was well known among all the elves of Mirkwood
proper.
She thought them dazzling in their Ranger attire, so
unlike the usual elf garb of her knowledge, with
swords at their hips instead of bows at their backs
and helms made of mithril tucked beneath their arms.
She curtseyed demurely at their salute and felt her
face grow red with embarrassment as they complimented
her on her beauty and grace.
"They say the King keeps his most marvelous treasures
hid far underground and now I know that the tale is
true, " said the one named Elladan with a twinkle in
his eyes as he grinned down at the tiny elf princess.
"And for such a treasure to be kept hidden is, truly,
a sin against Arda," said the other twin, Elrohir.
But that was the extent of her audience with her
brother, and his Rivendell visitors, for Legolas
guided her out the door and asked her to return to her
rooms and wait for him there. He promised to come and
see her as soon as he was finished talking with their
father. She took one last glance from the corner of
her eye back into the room at the handsome elves
within before racing to her chamber while giggling
into her hand. One of them, Elladan, had winked at
her! She threw herself on her bed and turned to face
the ceiling while her heart pounded gaily and she
replayed the introductions, the compliments, and the
wink, in her mind again and again and again until she
at last fell asleep.
When she awoke the next day she was saddened to hear
that her brother and father had left the kingdom but
she was even sadder that she had been denied another
glimpse of the dashing twins while they were still
within the castle the night before. She decided to
ask her father to invite them for her 200th birth
celebration and spent most of the day imagining them
sitting at either side of her while the feast
commenced, and what she would say to them and what
they would say to her, and she hugged herself often
with joy at her plans. But that had all been
forgotten when she discovered Averfad hiding in the
shadows outside the entrance to the royal chambers and
unwittingly helped the wood elf smuggle the elleth,
Tulare, from the area.
But while she ate her evening meal she remembered the
handsome sons of Elrond and wondered when she would
get a chance to ask her father for more information
about them. 'Soon, I hope' she giggled to herse
