Heaven Knows
Chapter 9: TA 3019
War was upon them. A band of rangers, lead by Elrond’s twin sons, bade goodbye to their loved ones in the courtyard of the Last Homely House. Today they would ride toward Rohan, to aid Estel in vanquishing the unexpected threat from Isengard. Then they would follow Isildur’s heir to Gondor.

The twins looked magnificent in their battle armor, beautiful and deadly. Erestor watched from his place on the courtyard steps as Elrohir passionately kissed a lovely young woman. She wrapped her arms about the peredhel tightly, desperately trying to stay her tears. Pulling away, the younger twin kissed the treacherous tears from her eyes, whispered something to her that resulted in a blush and gentle smile. As Elrohir moved aside, Elladan stepped forward and kissed her brow softly before joining his lover…his Adan lover…at the horses. Erestor felt a weight settle on his chest as he remembered the events of the previous night.

~~~~Flashback~~~~
The feast was wonderful and joyful, a brief respite from all the doom and gloom and tactical talk. The Rangers and elves danced and sang together, and in some cases, loved as if tomorrow would never come. Erestor sat, as always with Elrond, Glorfindel, and Gildor. The Wandering Company had taken up residence in the valley when the threat of evil became too great. The lords watched the merriment, talking softly amongst themselves.
Elrohir and a lovely woman he had been seeing for some time now twirled about the dance floor. They looked at one another with such love. She was the daughter of one of the Ranger captains; when the call for aid had come, many rangers brought their families to the Valley for safety while they were way at war. Elladan remained in the shadows, cozying up to a fellow ranger. If the blush on the young man’s face was any indication of what the peredhel just suggested, then Elladan would have a warm bed tonight and for many thereafter. Erestor tried to keep his gaze from straying to the candle lit corner, but it was nearly impossible. The one who held his heart flirted openly with another. Gildor touched the advisor’s arm, bringing him back to the conversation at hand.
As the twins seemed so engrossed in their revelry, the older elves were quite surprised when Elrohir approached and asked to speak with Elrond in private. Raising a questioning eyebrow, but saying nothing, Elrond rose from the table and followed his son out.
“What is it penneth?” Elrond finally asked as they entered his study.
Elrohir took a deep breath and replied, “I am ready to make my choice, Ada. Will you call upon Lord Námo?”
Elrond look at his son in disbelief. The young peredhel wished to name his fate now? Before so major a battle? “Are you certain? You cannot change your mind after it is done.”
“Aye, ada. I am certain.” With a heavy heart, Elrond spoke the incantation. With a cool swirl of mist, the tall, imposing figure of Námo stood before them.
“Have you kept to the oath and spoken to none of your choice?” he asked in a deep voice.
The peredhel bowed as Elrohir answered, “I have. I have spoken to no one, my brother included, of my choice.”
“Very well. Elrond, son of Eärendil, leave us for none shall hear his words.” Reluctantly, Elrond left. Námo, long ago forced an oath upon the twins that they not discuss with nor disclose their “choice” to another, including each other. Therefore, when each decided they were ready, Elrond was to call upon Námo to witness their individual choice.
Elrond closed the door as he left and took a seat on a bench in the hall. Soon he felt a presence approach.
“He thought to sneak out and make his choice, did he?” Elladan asked. Elrond just nodded. The older twin joined his father on the bench. They sat in heavy silence. Elladan stood as Elrohir exited his father’s study. The younger twin hesitated for he did not expect to see Elladan; he had hoped to make is choice without his twin’s knowledge. Elladan gave a small smile and proceeded to enter the study. Elrond locked eyes with his youngest son. Elrohir hugged his father close but said nothing. He kissed his father’s cheek and with a smile returned to the feast.
Inside the study, Elladan stood proud before the Doomsman of the Valar. Námo stared coolly at the peredhel before him. “Why have you come?” he asked in a rich voice.
“I have come to make my choice.” Námo nodded for Elladan to continue. “I choose my brother’s fate.”
Námo lifted his chin and eyed the youngling suspiciously, “Know you his choice?” he growled.
“We have remained true to our oath, but I am not blind.”
“Then you choose as he?”
“My brother’s words are as my own.” Elladan said with confidence.
Námo looked at the twin intently. Then he came to stand directly in front of Elladan, the barest hint of a smile on his lips. “So be it; the words of choice your brother spoke, now bind you for eternity.” With that, the Vala dissolved into mist and shadow, leaving Elladan alone. Elladan nodded to his father but said nothing as he passed the elder elf on the bench. Elrond, feeling great sorrow, entered his office. He needed time to accept what he felt he knew deep in is heart. The twins chose the same fate…they chose as Elros had; he would now loose all three children. Yet, there was a glimmer of joy for at least two admitted to being in love.
Elladan returned to the feast and approached the young Ranger. Taking his hand with a sly grin, he led the young man from the room.
Erestor watched as the twins reappeared, an odd aura about them. Elrohir escorted his lady to the garden and Elladan headed to his rooms with a potential lover. Elrond, however, remained absent. Concerned for his friend, Erestor rose from the table.
“Erestor?” Glorfindel questioned.
“Elrond has not returned. I feel something is amiss. I will seek him out.”
“Come, we will all go,” Gildor said, also rising. The three went in search of their lord. They found him in his study, staring out the window at the star of his father.
“Meldir? What is it?” Glorfindel asked softly as they moved into the room.
“I fear I will lose my sons, for tonight they made their choice.”
“Oh Elrond,” Glorfindel said as he approached his longtime friend, “did they not speak of their choice?”
Elrond closed his eyes as he spoke, “Even now they hold true to the oath.”
Erestor swayed and was thankful when Gildor wrapped an arm around his shoulders. Elrond turned towards them, a sad smile on his face and melancholy in his eyes. “I know only that Elrohir chose for love. I can leave these shores when the time comes knowing that they will be happy.” He took a deep breath, let it out slowly and continued, “Come, there is still much time for celebrating.” Patting Erestor’s shoulder as he passed, the elf lord strode from the room followed by his trusted Captain.
Gildor, ever perceptive, pulled Erestor close and whispered in his ear, “We will return for a short while and then retire.” Erestor made to protest. Far too many times had Gildor come to his rescue. Gildor kissed the advisor’s lips softly, “Do not; I know your heart lies elsewhere, so does mine. There are and never will be any expectations, Erestor. What you give helps me as well. I cannot be with the one who stole my heart ages ago. It is mutual comfort, though I do not understand why you do not just approach Elladan.”
If Erestor was surprised that Gildor knew the truth, he did not let on. “I cannot. It would place an unfair burden on him.” Erestor said sadly as he moved to leave the study.
~~~~End flashback~~~~

Erestor squared his shoulders as he listened to Elrond’s farewell blessing. Some how Erestor knew that this was truly goodbye and he knew what he would do.
