Chapter 9
Out of the Past
“Ada, are you all right?”
The older Elf looked back at the reports in his hands his attention had wandered from. He motioned for his son to enter and sit down.
“Some of our scouts on the border caught some trespassers,” said Ruthlagor. “Easterling slavers. There was a young one recovered from among them as well, a girl who had been missing from a nearby village.”
“That is good.”
“Yes. The scouting party is taking her home before they bring the slavers for further questioning and trial. A few of them unfortunately escaped.”
“You know how hard these cases always are on the king,” said the youth.
The advisor nodded and was silent for a moment before he continued. “There were also various small valuables, stolen doubtless, found on these Men."
He placed something on the desk in front of him, and the prince saw it was a small, leaf-shaped, silver pendant. He frowned and immediately reached for his own around his neck, one of no more than half a dozen in existence.
“Only Oropher’s direct line are permitted to wear those, not even Feredir, who is the king’s adopted son, has one. And I believe they’re all accounted for...” he rose and began pacing restlessly around his small study.
“Except the one that was made for Legolas,” finished his son.
“His body was never found...the possibility chills me even more than believing him dead.”
“But he wouldn’t still be alive...not if he was taken as a slave...not after this long. Ada, no one survives that...
“Ai, Valar...”
Ruthlagor laid a comforting hand on his son’s shoulder, thinking suddenly that in Thranduil’s place he would not have been able to so long endure. And how easily it could have been Leralonde or Ethiel on that patrol that accursed day.
“This would be too much for your uncle,” he said. “He cannot know about it yet. We will look discreetly into it. I’ll send a message to Feredir.
“By the way,” he added managing only a slightly lighter tone, “Alatariel is coming for a visit soon with little Ithilhen.”
“It will be good to see them again. And his grandson’s presence always helps cheer Thranduil.”
“Yes,” agreed his father, “that child is like a light returning to this place.”
