Chapter 9

Ecthelion went first to the palace to report Erestor’s condition to Turgon and to thank Idril again for giving Mordithen to Erestor. That done, he went to Galdor’s home to seek out the Lord of the Tree.

After being shown into the house, Ecthelion waited in a sitting room, wondering what he was going to say to Galdor.

“Thel? How is Erestor?” Galdor walked slowly into the room and seated himself across from his friend in a shadowy corner.

If Ecthelion thought it was strange that his friend did not come and embrace him, he passed it off as the effect of their newly strained relationship. “He will recover, my friend. He woke just a while ago, in some pain but lucid. My healer is content with his condition and assures us he will be fine within two or three weeks when his bones are fully mended.”

“I am more relieved than I can say to hear that,” Galdor answered quietly. “Perhaps the news will help him. I can but pray,” he added as if talking to himself.

Now Ecthelion knew something was not right. His friend remained in his chair, his head bowed, and not acting at all as he normally would. “Galdor, what is wrong, my friend? Is it Dringion?”

When there was no answer, Ecthelion rose and crossed the room to kneel before his friend. “What is it? What is wrong? Will you not tell me, old friend?” He lifted Galdor’s face gently, and saw the red-rimmed eyes and tear tracks on his face. “Galdor?”

“His grief is so great, Thel. I fear he fades,” Galdor finally answered in a whisper. “Last night….when he finally slept….he cried out for Erestor to forgive him, and he wept in his sleep, Thel. He wept in his sleep. My heart is breaking. I cannot comfort him.” Fresh tears streamed down the noble Lord’s face. “My love is not enough and I will lose him to his grief.”

“Oh, Galdor. I am so very sorry, my friend.” Ecthelion’s hand gripped his friend’s shoulder.

“I had hoped he would be better this morning, but he is not. And he will take no food; he says he could not stomach it. He sees what he is doing to me, and it only adds to his grief, and all I can do is hold him and weep with him, Thel.”

“Will you let me speak to him, Galdor? Perhaps it will help if I tell him Erestor will be well?”

Galdor nodded. Rising from the chair, he led Ecthelion to his chambers, where Dringion lay on a chaise, his broken arm cradled in his free hand.

Ecthelion was shocked when he saw the former guard. It wasn’t the vivid black and blue eyes and bruising from his broken nose that shocked him. Overnight, Dringion seemed to shrink into himself, and he appeared frail and already more than half broken. His dark hair had lost its sheen and hung listlessly on his graying skin, and there was no sparkle in his eyes. Galdor was right; Dringion was fading.

“Dringion, I have come to tell you about Erestor,” Ecthelion said quietly, sitting on the chaise next to the guard to make sure he was heard. “He will be well. There is no lasting damage from his fall. All will be well.”

Dringion looked at Ecthelion, his expression blank. Then tears began to run down his face. “Thank the Valar for that,” he said brokenly. “I am so sorry, my Lord, so very sorry, so very sorry.” Galdor came and lay beside him on the chaise, drawing the broken elf into his arms.

“I know, Dringion.” Speaking very quietly and calmly as he would to a child, Ecthelion said, “All will be well now. You must stop this grieving now, Dringion. You are destroying yourself. Think of Galdor. I know you love him and do not want to break his heart. You have to be strong for Galdor. You must take food and rebuild your strength for him.”

“Will you tell Erestor how very sorry I am, my Lord? Tell him I did not mean for him to be hurt like that. He must know before I….I need him to know. I want to tell him, but I know he will not see me…I am so sorry, so sorry. Tell him I am so very sorry.”

“I will tell him, Dringion,” Ecthelion said. “I think he will understand.”

“I am so cold, Galdor. So cold. So cold.” The broken elf shivered.

“Then let me warm you, my love,” Galdor said, holding Dringion closer and placing a soft kiss on his brow. “I love you so much. Do not leave me, my love. Do not leave me all alone without you.”

“I do not want to leave you, beloved, but I do not know how to stop this. The pain is so great. I love you, Galdor. Hold me. I am so cold.”

Galdor’s tears fell on Dringion’s face, blending with the fading elf’s, as Ecthelion took a quilt from the bed and covered the two elves. Holding back his own tears, he quietly left the room and hurried home.

Erestor awoke feeling warm and much better than he had before. The pounding in his head had stopped, and the ache in his leg and arm was lessened. “Glorfindel,” he whispered, breathing in the warrior’s unique scent. “You are still here. I had a dream.”

“What kind of dream, my love? A good one, I hope.”

“Yes, a good one. Wait, was it a dream?” Scrunching up his brow, Erestor tried to remember. “I heard you….you were talking to me….you said you loved me….that you were already bound to me.” He looked up at Glorfindel in awe. “You said that if I died you would follow me. It wasn’t a dream, was it? ”

“It wasn’t a dream, my sweet one. I said those words to you when you were unconscious. I was so afraid I would lose you. I knew if I did I would follow you, beloved.” Glorfindel cupped Erestor’s face in his hand. “You hold my heart and my soul, Erestor. I am yours and you are mine, as surely as if we were already bound.”

Erestor locked his eyes to Glorfindel’s for a long moment. Certainty, deeper than his prior knowledge, filled his heart and soul. Glorfindel was his soul mate. His eternal love. His forever mate. The only elf he would ever love. “And if I lost you, I would follow you,” he whispered. “Yours. Always, only yours.”

Glorfindel’s heart pounded in his chest. “Erestor….beloved….how soon will you marry me?”

“Now? This minute, tonight, tomorrow?” The lithe elf answered softly, a smile lighting his face.

“Or perhaps after you are healed? I want your two arms to hold me,” Glorfindel whispered.

“After I am healed. Yes.”

Glorfindel captured Erestor’s mouth with his own and gently pushed his tongue into the welcoming sweetness. As their tongues curled around each other caressingly and soft moans filled the air, they were lost to all but each other.
