At last they arrived at the docks of New York City. One hour had passed since they took off and Dom’s bleeding still hadn’t stopped. He had begun to cough blood instead which made Billy even madder. Quickly as possible they got out of the boat, Bean carried Dom on his back again, and together they ran to the car that was still standing where Elijah had left it. Karl sat behind the steering wheel and stepped on the gas. They left the docks and drove into the centre of the city, Karl speeding up until they finally reached the pub, the headquarters. They jumped out of the car and Sean lead them to the back door. They ran down hundreds of stairs till finally Billy saw the white door made out of steel. Karl pushed it open and led Bean with the unconscious Dom and the rest into the medical part of the headquarters. They came in a huge room with six beds in it. It looked as in a real hospital.

Bean laid Dom on the first bed and stepped aside. Sean immediately ripped Dom’s t-shirt open and checked the bleeding.

“It won’t stop. Ok, everyone leave the room! Karl, you stay and help me.”

Billy, Elijah and Bean did as Sean had instructed and left the room to go to the meeting hall. Billy went with a heavy heart, he hadn’t wanted to leave Dom alone. He had wanted to stay and hold Dom’s hand. But he trusted Sean and Karl. They would save Dom.

~***~

Elijah had made some coffee. Nobody wanted some but it was obvious that he wanted to distract himself from the terrible events that had happened so far. Bean had gone to sleep, he had been tired; though he was a strong man it had been hard to carry Dom all the way. The thought of him carrying one of his friends, actually his leader, wounded and bleeding, had been too much for him. The only two persons now sitting in the meeting hall at the great round black table were Elijah and Billy. Silence filled the room.

Billy was tapping the back his shoe nervously against the floor. He played with his hands, they wandered from hair over neck to eyes. They rubbed, scratched and fumbled. Billy was under stress. He couldn’t stand the waiting. It was almost half past 6. In 30 minutes Dom would transform into a vampire again. Dom had to survive only 30 little minutes. Then the wound would heal and everything would be fine.

The door opened slowly and Sean and Karl appeared at the doorway. Billy’s gaze landed on Sean and his eyes hung on Sean’s lips.

“I’ve managed to stop the bleeding but he’s still not out of danger. He has a strong will to fight though. If he gets through the transformation process safely there will be no need to worry anymore.”, Sean answered to the unasked question.

Billy sighed, a little relieved. “Can I see him?”

Karl nodded and sat down rubbing his eyes tiredly. It had been a tough fight for Dom’s life, Billy could see that. Both men looked very exhausted and shocked.

Billy went to the medical room and sat down on a chair next to Dom’s bed. On a table next do Dom’s bed lay the iron chains. So Sean and Karl had been able to get them off.

Dom’s body was linked to some machines. The most important thing was the high and monotone sound of the ECG machine. As long as Billy was able to hear it everything was fine. He kept telling himself this while counting the minutes, the seconds away until 7 o’clock. His hands were cold and he was freezing. He stood up and paced through the room. He shook his hands wildly to warm them up, clapped, snapped and rubbed them against each other. It didn’t help.

“Dominic…”, he suddenly said, coming to a halt and turning his head around. He looked at the fragile body of the younger man and remembered every word he had ever said to Billy. He really forced himself to remember but the most important words Dom had ever said to him were the ones right before Viggo had pushed his sword through Dom’s chest.

“I love you, too, Dom. And I want you to know it. I want you to hear it. You must fight. You have to survive… for me.”, Billy said calmly not moving from his spot.

The beeping of his digital watch made Billy jump. 7 a.m. He quickly went over to Dom and watched him closely now. It could start every minute. But before he was able to end these thoughts Dom’s eyes sprung open and he tried to sit up. But he couldn’t. It was only now that Billy recognized the leather belts that were tying Dom to the bed. Billy grabbed Dom’s hand and held it tight. He could see that the skin on Dom’s wrists was torn down and he was bleeding there, too. Those bloody chains! What had Viggo done to him? Or with him? He couldn’t and didn’t even want to imagine!

Dom’s body started shaking and a loud and painful cry escaped Dom’s mouth. Billy knelt now besides Dom’s bed and pressed his hand even tighter.

“Hold on, Dom, hold on! I’m here, right beside you, it will be alright.” Billy kept saying this over and over again. Dom’s shaking was increasing and his eyes were closed firmly. Billy didn’t know what to do. He thought about calling for help but then he remembered Elijah telling him that the rooms were soundproof. Billy then had the idea of running back to the hall and getting everyone but he couldn’t leave Dom alone. Not now.

“Come on, Dominic. Come on, you’ll make it. I’m here.”

And then the shaking stopped abruptly. Billy looked at the clock on the wall. Seven twenty-five. Billy breathed out deeply and closed his eyes for a moment to relax. It was over. Then he listened up. He couldn’t hear it. There was no monotone beeping sound any longer. Only one long, fine, high pitched tone…

“No. Dom! NO!” Billy’s scream echoed through the room and he collapsed over Dom’s chest crying hard. This couldn’t happen! Not now! NOT NOW!

A hand touched the back of Billy’s head and its fingers played with Billy’s hair.

“What’s all that crying about?”, asked a tired, exhausted but also familiar voice.

Billy raised his head and looked into some beautiful pair of bluish grey eyes.

“You’re alive…?”, Billy whispered stunned.

“Well, technically no… You remember that tiny little thing with me being a vampire?” Dom cleared his throat. “Vampires don’t have a heart beat.”

Billy looked over to the ECG machine which still showed a straight line on the monitor.

“You’re…”, Billy began but stopped, irritated.

Dom smiled, freed himself from some cables and clips and sat up. Billy’s body moved back but he still was on his knees unable to get up, his jaw dropped down.

“Believe it or not, my dear little Billy, I’m dead but alive!”, Dom said cheerfully and pointed at his chest. Indeed, the wound which was strongly bleeding minutes ago had disappeared.

“Smile, Billy, please! I would like so much to see you smile again!” Dom shoved the bed sheets aside, got out of bed, took Billy’s hands and helped him on his feet again. And then Billy believed it at last. He threw himself into Dom's arms and clenched his fingers into Dom’s pure skin.

“I thought I had lost you…”, Billy whispered, silently crying. “I love you. I love you. I love you. I…” Billy broke off and let his emotions take over him. Tears were streaming down his face.

Dom stroked Billy’s back and head and spoke softly into his ear.

“Shhh, Billy, I know. Don’t cry. Everything’s alright. Everything will be fine now.”

But it would not.

~***~

After Dom had completely recovered he and Billy spent a lot of time together. Every night they went out, visited some bars or stayed the “Black Widow” and later would walk around in the sleeping city.

One night Billy led Dom to his flat.

“You still got some of your things lying around there. Some of your guns and shirts.”, Billy said as they were standing in front of the door to the building.

Dom grinned cheeky. “Well, I think we should go up then. Lead the way, Billy.”

Billy grinned back but before he unlocked the front door he couldn’t resist but kiss Dom tenderly. That cheeky grin had been simply irresistible.

“You do that to all your guests? Because if yes, I’ll come by more often!”, said Dom silently as they both broke off to catch breath again.

Billy hadn’t the chance to answer for Dom pressed another kiss on Bill’s lips, stronger and more passionate this time. Hands were moving up and down a long and gorgeous spine. Billy moaned into Dom’s mouth as he felt Dom's hand on his ass. Dom kissed his way down Billy’s neck.

“Dom… You have to let me open the door…” Billy was hardly able to speak he was so turned on with the caresses by Dom’s tongue.

Dom mumbled something not understandable which Billy took up as a “Yeah, open up quickly so I can get you naked!”

Billy fumbled with the keys and finally got the door open. Both men ran upstairs to the seventh floor. In front of Billy’s flat Dom embraced him from the back; Dom took Billy’s coat off and made out a little piece of skin on the shoulder peering out from under a deep blue shirt. He covered this part of Billy’s skin with thousands of kisses and let his tongue slide up and down slowly. Again Billy turned the key, this time to his flat, and both men stumbled into the living room. Billy turned around, seeking Dom’s lips, and shut the door with one hard kick of his foot. He dropped the keys on a little table that stood nearby, Dom let Billy’s coat fall to the ground, his own one followed, and let Billy lead him into the bedroom.

“Dom… I need you…”, Billy moaned and at once Dom’s hands were under Billy’s shirt pulling it up before throwing it into a corner of the room. Then he took off his own one and it landed near Billy’s.

Billy felt the edge of his bed digging into his legs, Dom pushed him a bit and both landed on the soft, white blankets. Dom now started placing kisses on Billy’s chest while his hands went up and down Billy’s upper arms. Billy sighed deeply and Dom looked up, worried.

“What? Something wrong? Did I hurt you?”, Dom asked at once still lying on Billy.

“No, everything’s fine…” Billy fell silent before adding subdued “Dominic, I never made love to a man before.”

Dom smiled relieved. “If that’s what’s bothering you I can reassure you: Me too. You’re my first one, Billy.”

Billy’s face lightened up a bit. “Okay, I just don’t want to… you know…”

“I understand. We don’t have to haste.”

Their eyes met and for this one moment, though nobody knew what the other one was thinking, both forgot that Dom was different, that he was a vampire and Billy a normal man. They were just Dom and Billy and they were in love. Nothing else mattered now.

Dom positioned himself anew his face now close to Billy’s and kissed him deeply again. Billy’s hands somehow gripped Dom’s belt and fumbled with it. He wanted to feel Dom, needed him near himself. Dom realized Billy’s nervous shivering and placed soft kisses on Billy’s neck sliding slowly down to his nipples. He halted and licked at them, let Billy feel his canine teeth against them. Billy’s hips rose at that touch a little bit higher and a silent moan escaped his lips.

Billy never imagined it to be so different and…beautiful. Dom was so tender Billy almost couldn’t feel him. But he wanted to. He wanted Dom so badly. Right now. His fingers were grabbing Dom’s hair and playing with it while Dom's hands were pulling down the zipper of Billy’s jeans. He shoved them down and freed his lover’s hardened precious from the boxer shorts.

Dom’s tongue licked the precum away and let his tongue slide up and down Billy’s length. The Scotsman’s hands let go of Dom’s head and were now gripping the sheets tightly.

“Dom….”

Billy breathed out slowly and enjoyed the name of the younger man on his lips. It was to him the most gorgeous name in the world. He wondered in how many ways this name could be spoken.

“Dommmm….” Longing.

Dom opened his mouth and closed his lips around Billy’s cock.

“Dom!” Surprised.

Dom began to suck and lick. Billy was sure he could feel those teeth. Those long and wonderful canine teeth.

“Dooooom!” Totally horny.

Dom sucked faster, harder, teeth caressing Billy’s little boy.

“Dom!!!” Ordering. Demanding.

Billy came, eyes closed while screaming out loud Dom’s name.

“Dominic!” In love.

Dom let go of Billy very slowly, enjoying every bit of him for the last time before taking away the warmth of his mouth.

Billy looked down and saw Dom burying his face in Billy’s stomach. Dom felt that he was watching him so he looked up. Their eyes met. Dom grinned largely.

“Oh god, Dommie, your canine teeth are driving me crazy!” Billy licked his lips and pulled Dom up to him to give him a vehement but loving kiss.

And suddenly the moment was gone.

As Billy let go he recognized Dom’s empty and sad eyes. He had changed within seconds. Dom rolled off Billy and went to the window sighing deeply.

“Dom? Something not right?”

Dom didn’t move. “Billy, where do you expect this is going?”

“I don’t understand…”

“I mean, I’m a vampire, Billy! A night creature! A killing, monstrous and revengeful beast!”

“What? No! That’s not right! I know you!”

“You think you do! But the truth is there are parts of me that I hope you will never get to know.”

“But… But I have no problem with that, Dom! You know that this doesn’t matter to me!”

He turned his head to face Billy. “But it should, Bills! It should!” He stopped and looked away again. “You should have let me die. You should have let me die when I was about to.”

Billy thought he didn’t hear correctly.

“You don’t mean that! What’s going on at all?”

Billy sat up, put on his jeans and went over to Dom touching his shoulder.

“What would I do without you? You’re being very selfish right now, you know that, Dom?”

“Selfish?”, asked Dom surprised and turned around.

“Yes, because if we just have let you die I would have never had the chance to tell you that I love you.” Billy kissed Dom on the forehead. “And when I say that it doesn’t matter to me that you are different then you have to believe me.”

Dom nodded slowly and forced himself to smile. Billy took his hand and pulled him towards the bed. They made love the whole night long, kissing, nibbling, licking, touching, eager to feel the nearness of each other. But Dom’s thoughts couldn’t stop circling around one subject.
If only that medicine would be stronger…

~***~

Dom was the first one to arrive in the meeting room. That was good, so he had time to practice. Okay, how he would tell them? Maybe he should tell them the story from the beginning, but that would take hours. So, where to begin? Well, after all, it was all a huge lie. There was neither a beginning nor an ending. So, it would be best to tell only the main facts. His decision was made. He would leave, definitely.

The doorknob rattled and the whole group came in – except Billy. Dom would tell him later. First he had to persuade his friends and allies.

“So, Dom, what’s so important you have to tell us that you called in a meeting?”, asked Elijah at once and sat down with Bean, Sean and Karl settled now around the round table.

“Well, I… I received a message today, from one of my spies.”, Dom began. “And he reported that groups have been formed to revenge Viggo’s death. They may be small gangs but there are a lot of them. And they are dangerous. So, he asked me to help him and some of his own allies.”

“Does this mean we have work again?”, asked Bean and looked around to see the reactions of the others.

“Not exactly. I will go alone.”

“So, you’re leaving. For how long?”, asked Karl.

“I don’t know. Perhaps some weeks, months… I’m not sure how long it will take.”

Dom relaxed a bit as he realized that they had bought it. Wow, that was easier that he had thought!

“But why can’t we come, too? It would surely be faster when we come with you.”, Sean suddenly said.

“No, really, my informant only asked for me. Your faces are well known…”

“So is yours!”, interrupted Elijah.

“Yes, but… Look, I have to do this on my own. I promise I will come back…someday.”

Sad, confused and disappointed faces which was really the worst that could happen to Dom. He didn’t want to let them down but for now he had to leave. Think about some things that bothered him. He had to be alone. It was the best for him and his group – and for Billy. He wished him a good future, but this could not happen with Billy spending the rest of his life with him – Dom, the vampire, the monster, the beast.

Bean was the first one to speak again. “Alright then, if you have to leave then go. We wish you the best. If you need help, you know where we are. But didn’t you forget to inform one person about this meeting?”

“Now that you say it! Where’s Billy?”, asked Elijah. “Why didn’t you tell him?”

“Tell me what?”, asked the person they have been talking about right now. Billy entered the meeting room at this very moment only being able to catch up the last phrase of Elijah.

“Billy! There you are!” Dom sounded surprised and looked nervous.

Sean somehow understood what was going on and told the rest to get out for he had something very important to show them – only Elijah, Sean and Karl. As they left and as Sean passed Dom he patted him on the shoulder and wished him “Good Luck!”

“What’s going on, Dom? What was that meeting about? I’m sorry I’m so late, but nobody told me there was one…”

“No, it’s alright, I called in the meeting. And I didn’t tell you on purpose because I wanted to speak to you eye to eye.” Dom took a deep breathe. “Which is now more difficult than I have thought.”

But Dom managed, told Billy every detail he was able to make up spontaneously. Billy just watched him quietly, didn’t move, just kept on listening as Dom lied more and more, buried himself under lies. When Dom ended a deep and uncomfortable silence filled the room. Then Billy spoke, calm but serious.

“And when were you going to tell me the truth?”

Dom stopped short and swallowed hard. How did he know?

“Did you really think that I would believe this whole bunch of shite?” Billy’s angry look disappeared to be replaced by a sad one. “What’s the real reason you wanna leave me?”

“Billy, it’s not that I don’t love you. Because I do! And strange enough as it is, that is the reason I have to go. I’ve been thinking and I can’t handle the situation we’re in right now. I need to be on my own. – For a while.” Dom added quickly.

“You mean forever, don’t you? Why…? I don’t understand!” Billy stopped and looked around confused, paced around the table. “Is it about last night? The talk we had about your doubts?”

Dom nodded guiltily.

“I won’t allow that. I won’t allow you to leave me. There must be some way you can…”

“There isn’t.”

“Don’t you fucking say that! There’s always a solution! You just…” Billy closed his eyes tightly for a moment and tried to think. Then he suddenly rushed over to Dom and grabbed his shoulders. “I got it! Bite me!”

“What?”

“Bite me! Just do it! Let me become a vampire, too! That’s how he we can be together!”

”No fucking way!!!”, Dom suddenly yelled and pushed Billy away, eyes sparkling furiously. “You don’t know what you’re saying! Do you think it’s fun being a vampire? It wasn’t my choice, Bills! I was forced to become one! It’s hell on earth! Hiding from sun, living at night like some filth, someone who doesn’t deserve to be touched by sunlight! I won’t allow that!”

Billy was hurt, Dom could see that. He breathed out strongly and paused. They both needed to calm down again.

“I have to leave. I… I don’t know what to do.” He covered his eyes with his hands.

“So you run.” Bill’s voice sounded reproachful. And that made Dom angry again.

“Are you calling me coward?”

“Yes, I bloody am! That’s what you were always good at, huh? Give up and leave!”

Billy’s voice grew louder with every word.

“Hey, it’s not easy, okay? I have no other choice! I don’t want you to… to make yourself false hopes about us.” There it was. The truth. Nothing but the pure and terrible truth.

“False hopes?”, Billy repeated disbelievingly. The volume of his voice lowered. “I understand. So, when do you wanna leave?”

“Tomorrow, maybe even tonight.” It was hard, really it was. For both of them.

“Okay. But, I give you one last word of advice before you go and start packing: If you want to run, give up, fail, stop loving me – you better leave right now. Cause I won’t keep looking into your eyes that are telling me: “I gave up on us.””

Dom’s head fell on his chest and he started leaving the room. As he passed Billy he whispered softly: “I’ll leave tonight after sunset.”

~***~

Dom immediately started packing. He threw shirts, jeans and trousers in a rucksack, equipped himself with guns and swords and was ready to step out of Billy’s life. But then he recognized how late it was: early afternoon, which meant that the sun was still up in the sky. So he sat down on his little bed and waited.

Did he do the right thing? Of course he did! Maybe he didn’t love Billy at all, maybe it was just pure lust, lust that is being born in the soul of a vampire. And what if Billy was in love with Dom? He couldn’t just let him down, or better now than later. It could be worse when the feelings grow. So better end it now.

He hated himself. He never ever in his life felt more disgust for himself than now. He did the worst thing possible. Leave. Give up. Run. Just like Billy had said. He didn’t know himself any more. His whole life long he had tried to resist his destiny, tried to escape. But you could not run away from yourself. Dom always would carry his immortal part with him. Now he had become the person he was avoiding to be.

He would find a way. Maybe he would come across something that would change his and Billy’s life forever. Maybe someday he would find an antidote to his being. He set himself this aim. He would go out there and find something that would transform him back into a human being. That was the only way to be with Billy. He couldn’t just do nothing. Billy would get old and someday he would die. Dom, however, would still be alive. Dead but alive. He wouldn’t be able to lie down beside Billy and rest with him forever. Pain would come over him and ruin him. He knew that when that day came he would become a real vampire. Pain meant grief, grief meant anger, anger meant destruction. He had to avoid this.

With all these thoughts shooting through his mind he realized something: He really loved Billy. He cared about him. He didn’t want him to get hurt. Dom loved Billy. And this thought made him sigh out loud relieved.

~***~

“Okay, Dom, take care of yourself. And please remember what Bean said: Whenever you need help, call us! We will come at once!”, said Elijah and embraced Dom for the last time.

“I know. Thanks guys. I really appreciate that.” Dom let go and looked past the little group to the door that lead into the building. The others followed his look.

“He will come. Don’t worry.”, said Sean encouragingly.

“No, he won’t.” Dom’s face showed a sad smile. “But it’s okay. I can’t blame him. It’s my decision.”

He turned around and looked from the top of the building down on the city. The moon shone full and bright on it. Everything seemed so peaceful and quiet. Dom knew the fight was over. There would be no vampire rebellion. He was one of the last. He was one of the good ones. He would protect the ones he loved. Whether he would come and say goodbye or not.

Dom reached for his sunglasses and put them on.

“Tell him that I… I will be back. Someday. And take care of him.”, said Dom and walked back to get some run-up.

And then the door was opened harshly. Everyone turned around and looked into the exhausted face of Billy.

“Don’t… go…”, he said panting.

“But, Billy, I thought we went through this…”, Dom began and approached him.

“No. It’s not that.”, Billy answered catching breath again. “You can’t go, not until I said “I’m sorry” and that I love you.”

Billy wasn’t able to see Dom’s glittering eyes. He was near tears. He swallowed and tried to breathe normal.

“I will wait for you.” Billy seized Dom’s leather coat and pulled to his chest. “If you need your time to think about us I can understand that. I just want you to know that I will wait for you.”

“Thank you…” It was a whisper. Dom was thankful and embraced Billy tighter.

When they finally let go of each other Dom turned around immediately. His sunglasses couldn’t hide the tears that were now streaming down his cheeks. Dom ran, jumped on the next roof and vanished into the night.

“I will find a way to make you human again, Dom. We’ll be together someday, somehow.”

Billy stood there in the middle of his new found friends and watched Dom disappear.

“See you soon, Dominic.”
