Chapter 9

Ferny moved away from Frodo letting his legs fall back to the bed, he noticed the wound in Frodo’s leg had started bleeding again. Ferny ripped a piece of the potato sack off and tied it tight around the wounded leg. Frodo moaned weakly, coming back to consciousness. “I ain’t gonna have ya bleed to death in yer sleep!” he said . “When ya die I want ya to know yer dying!” He then checked the restraints around Frodo’s wrists and ankles. He turned to leave and as an afterthought threw a dirty blanket over Frodo. “Ahhh! Ya stupid rat, you’ll probable die on me tonight anyway!” Ferny said as he slammed the door shut behind him. He cleaned himself up and got dressed. Then he finished the second bottle of whiskey and passed out on the sofa.

Left alone and in pain Frodo’s thoughts went to Bilbo and his friends. Would he ever see them again? With that thought roaming around in his head, Frodo fell into an uneasy sleep brought on by loss of blood and weariness.

When Ferny woke up he noticed that the sun was high. It was not quite noon but it was close. Ferny fixed himself something to eat and thought about going into town for a drink. A soft moan from the back reminded him of his ‘guest’. Ferny smiled and opened
the door to the room he had Frodo in. “How are we doin’ in here?” Ferny asked sarcastically. Frodo looked over in his direction and tried to focus on Ferny. He was weak from lack of food, water and blood loss. “Please, I’m... so thirsty, I need.... water.” Frodo pleaded, his voice barely above a whisper. “Oh, you want some water? Well I’ll see what I can do about that.” Ferny left the room and went to a little stream that was out back of the shack and returned with a bucket full of water. He looked at Frodo.

“Ya thirsty?” Frodo nodded tentatively. “Ya want a drink of nice cool water?” Frodo licked his lips and nodded again. “All right here ya go!” Ferny said as he tipped the bucket and let the water pour slowly over Frodo’s face. In his weakened state Frodo didn’t close his mouth in time. The water poured into it. He couldn’t breath! He was drowning! He turned his head to one side then the other trying to escape the water. Then, just as he felt his lungs would burst the bucket was empty. Frodo took a deep gasping breath and choked on some water that was still in his mouth. As he coughed to clear his airway, Ferny slapped him across the face. “That’ll teach ya to ask for anything!” He dropped the bucket and left the room.

Frodo started to cry then, in spite of himself. He was hungry, thirsty, and in pain. And though he hated to admit it, he was scared. He didn’t know how much more of this he would be able to take. He had finally accepted the fact that Ferny was going to kill him one way or the other. He had lost hope that his friends would find him in time. The tears flowed freely down the side of his head. He would never see the Shire again. Never see Sam’s smile. Never again hear Pippin laugh. Never again play a practical joke with Merry. As these memories floated through Frodo’s mind he fell into an uneasy sleep. He was awakened a few moments later to a sharp pang of hunger. His stomach was protesting loudly about having gone empty for so long. ‘What I wouldn’t give for even half a lembas cake right now!’ He thought. “Stop that!” He instantly scolded himself. “You went for longer than this without food in Mordor. If you can survive that you can survive this!. Merry and Pippin will be out looking for me at least! They know I would not do anything to hurt Rosie or Sam!” Frodo felt a tug at his heart at the thought of his two friends. “Oh Sam!” Frodo cried out loud. “After going through so much to have it end like this!” Frodo closed his eyes against the sting of tears. He vowed for Sam’s sake that he would not cry again no matter how bad it got. Though he couldn’t imagine things getting any worse than they already were.

Frodo looked around the room trying to think of a way to escape. He saw a small window that had been boarded over. “Not much chance of anyone seeing me here.” he said to himself. He also noted that there were holes in the wall. “This shack must have been abandoned for quite a while. I wonder how close to the road it is. Maybe some walking on it would hear me!” Frodo started yelling. “HELP ME! HELP ME! I’M IN HERE!” Frodo continued to scream until his voice failed him and he was exhausted.
