Part 8

Part 8…

Glorfindel moved with his mare as she reared in fright. Twining one hand in her mane he held his sword aloft in the other. When all four hooves were once again upon the ground he swung his sword in a wide arc, cursing under his breath as he did so.

They had just been in the middle of crossing the Great River Anduin that would lead them into Mirkwood, the torrential down poor having forced them to alter their destination for a short time as it had shown absolutely no signs of abating. Half of the group had already reached the opposite bank, the crossing being slower than anticipated as the ford, normally only a foot or so deep, had been submerged until the water reached the shoulders of their horses. The attack had taken them completely by surprise, and Glorfindel had scrambled to form a defensive plan, made slightly more difficult as half of his warriors were on the opposite bank and another large section of them were in the midst of crossing.

Glorfindel struck a blow to the dark figure beside him as it advanced on Elrond, blinking through the rain in disbelief as the blade of his sword passed directly through the beings chest and with a swirl of black mist the shadowed figure vanished. Vanished? What kind of dark magic was this? Meeting Elronds equally puzzled gaze both elves looked out over the small battle taking place, realizing almost instantly that the shadowy beings attacking them were not in actuality attacking them, but seemed more intent on frightening their horses. In fact they seemed intent on one horse and rider in particular.

“Erestor.”

Elrond voiced Glorfindels thought out loud, and the blonde felt his throat close up in fear as Erestors mount was slowly driven backwards, the stallion tossing his head frantically at the advancing shadows. The elf and horse had been one of those in the middle of crossing when the creatures had swarmed upon them and it obviobvious that the pair had, for what ever reason, quickly become the target.

Glorfindel locked gazes with Elrond, torn between duty to his Lord and duty to his heart.

“Go.”

A stiff nod, his eyes conveying his gratitude, and Glorfindel nudged his mare forward. Screaming silently as his marruggruggled to avoid the shadows and delayed him from reaching the dark elf situated at the center of the ford. Reaching the edge of the river Glorfindel pressed insistently at his mounts sides, needing to move quicker, needing to reach his beloved before something happened.

Erestors mount reared once more, and Glorfindel watched in horrified shock as the dark haired elf slid from the stallions back fel fell into the river, being pulled swiftly down stream and out of sight.

A moments hesitation and Glorfindel whirled his mount around, shouting a final order before he forced his mare into a frenzied gallop away from the ford and towards hisrt. rt.

“Go! Go to Mirkwood. I will find him and meet you there!”

And with that the re-born warrior was gone.
