Summary: Legolas returns to the Golden Wood.

“And what business brings the Prince of Mirkwood to our Golden wood?”

Legolas searched Haldir’s eyes for some hint of playfulness that his voice did not betray. Surely he knew why he had come…

“I promised Orophin I would return when the war was over. That is why I am here.”

“It has been years since the ring was destroyed. Why do you come now?” Haldir’s stern countenance remained unchanged.

“My presence was required at home. There were important matters that required my attention.”

“In that case I am glad you did not let my brother get in the way of your princely duties.”
Legolas was surprised by his cold tone, but before he could find his voice, the Marchwarden spoke again. “You can stay in our talan until we leave in the morning.”

“Is he… here?”

“He is not. I have sent him to Imladris with Rúmil. I hoped a change of scenery would ease his heartache…” Haldir have Legolas an accusing glare, and the latter swallowed hard. He had no idea his returned meant so much to Orophin…

Legolas did not sleep well that night. He was touched that Orophin had been waiting for him, but it also made him feel like a horrible Elf because he had not done the same. He lied when he told Haldir he could not have come earlier. The truth was that he had found another lover: a border guard from his homeland. It was not until that relationship ended that he decided to return to ‘Lórien.

Orophin stopped hacking ad wiped the sweat off his forehead with a sleeve. He plopped down on the ground, exhausted.

“Are you sure you do not want any help?” Rúmil asked.

“Nay, I am fine. Besides, I am almost done.”

“If you say so.” Rúmil walked up to a smile pile of chopped would and picked up the logs before heading in the direction from whence he came.

Orophin would have wanted some help, but he was willing to do all the work himself in order to get away from the others. He knew his brothers meant well, but he just was not up for any social activity. The sight of Rúmil and Erestor’s blissful togetherness gnawed at his heart, and the rowdy behavior of the other Elves that were camping with them irritated him.

He knew it was time to give up on his Princeling. If Legolas had not come bac him him in the six years since the war ended, it was obvious that he no longer cared about him— if he ever did…

“How is your brother?” Erestor asked as Rúmil came to sit on his lap. It was almost dark, the fire was already going, and Orophin still had not joined them.

The Silvan Elf sighed. “I think he would have been better off, sulking, at home”

“What troubles him so?”

“His past lover seems to have moved on, but he has not. I hate to see him thus. I could kill that bastard…”

“Nay, do not kill him. Save your energy for me,” the Councilor smiled, “You WILL need it.” As their mouths came together for a kiss, Rúmil say, out of the corner of his eye, that Orophin had snuck quietly into his tent.

Orophin’s eyes grew wide as he looked upon the face of the Elf who sat next to his brother at the kitchen table

“Princeling!” he yelled, beaming with joy as he ran to Legolas. They threw their arms around each other, “I thought you would never…”

“Shhh,” Legolas cut the Guardian off by pressing his own lips against his. At first their kiss was fervent and demanding, a result of years of log, bg, but grew softer and more patient as it continued. The world seemed to spin beneath their feet. When it was over, the Elves looked deep into each other’s eyes and studied their faced, both of them realizing that the other was even better-looking than they had remembered.

From behind them, Rúmil looked over at Haldir, who met his disapproving gaze. Neither of them liked the scene that was unfolding before their eyes. It was not right for Legolas to just march right back into their brother’s life after all that he had suffered, and act as if nothing had happened. They would not forgive him as easily as Orophin did…
