Chapter 8

The Dark Lord’s Priest

“How much would you like for the Elf, Arya?”

The whore-master seemed momentarily startled by the Dark Priest’s question but recovered as quickly as only one of his low scruples could manage.

He had been more than a little annoyed when Behdad’s acolyte, Prince Emau, had intervened the day before with his disciplining of his slave. Though it was seldom done, to interfere between a master and a slave, the too-charitable prince had been unable to keep from stepping in, seeing the hapless elf on the wrong side of Arya’s ire, and having all but collapsed at his master’s feet...

Had it been any but one of the King’s sons, Arya would have suffered no meddling in his affairs. Unfortunately, one did not argue with royalty, and the prince had not accepted Arya’s explanations, not seeing how a mute slave who dared not even raise his gaze, could ever manage to be insolent.

The slave had since been resting in the healing chambers, and it was also beginning to appear that Behdad did not wish for Arya to have his Elven whore back; though perhaps, he told himself, he might yet garner some small profit in this.

“He is a beautiful creature isn’t he?” he licked his lips and dodged the priest’s query. “And an extremely skilled slave...”

“You may save your sale's routine, Arya. You know I’ve little taste for pretty youths.”

“Then why...?”

“My reasons are not your concern whore-master,” said Behdad coldly. “I will only tell you that King Javad has become quite fond of that one.

“His Majesty is away just now, but an Elven bed slave would make a fine gift would he not?”

“If it is to be in the service of my king, how could I refuse?” he said slyly, trying to guess at the priest’s enigmatic motives for wanting the youth. He knew well that Sauron’s priest never did anything for its own sake. “Though it will pain me to part with the boy.”

“No doubt you’ll survive, and find another to fill your bed and your pockets.

“However,” warned Behdad, “whatever price you decide to put on him, I hope you will not fail to take into account the slave’s current state.

“Indeed, these past months that he has been called to attend on the king, he has seemed to me more like a ghost each time I have seen him...and if he never collapsed before yesterday, there must be some unseen strength in him.”

“My lord, I...”

“You may treat your slaves as you wish, but a dead slave is of use to no one. And this one will require some attention before he can serve Our purpose, or be a fit gift for my king...”

“I hope, my lord, you do not ask that I sell him at a loss. Elven slaves are so very rare, and notoriously difficult to keep for very long...”
