Chapter 8.

Chapter 8.

“We need to talk, meleth. I have been in Imladris nearly a month now, and I need to return to Mirkwood soon. My people need me home.” Thranduil said seriously to his mate. The King had recovered completely and all indications of his fading were gone.

“I know, and I have started to pack my belongings. Though, I must admit that I will miss Imladris terribly, but my place is beside you now.” Lindir whispered, his voice full of longing. He couldn’t deny his melancholy, when he had to leave Imladris, even if he loved Thranduil with all his heart and would gladly follow him.

“I’m happy to hear that Lindir nín, but there is something you should know. I have avoided this conversation for far too long.”

Lindir frowned at Thranduil’s unusual hesitation. But whatever his mate was going to tell him, Lindir wanted to hear it as soon as possible. He didn’t want any secrets between them.

“What it is, meleth? You know you can tell me anything.” Lindir said softly.

Thranduil sighed deeply, trying to gather his thoughts.

“As you know, I am the King, and that’s why I need an heir who would be the King after me. I have always thought that I should marry an elleth so that she would carry elflings. But now that I am bound to you the situation has changed completely.”

“Do you regret our bond then? Is this why you talk like this?” Lindir whispered, trying to suppress his tears. How he wanted to be everything Thranduil needed, but could he ever fulfill all the expectations? He knew very well that he could never give Thranduil a child.

“Oh, Lindir, nay! Don’t ever let that thought into your mind again. You are everything to me, and I could never regret our love and our bonding, never!” Thranduil said, pulling his mate into his arms.

“We must discuss this because I need an heir now, and you are my mate. Luckily, there are other possibilities. I had a younger brother, and he was married. They had one boy and his blood is royal, enough that my people will accept him as a new heir.”

Lindir smiled hesitantly.

“Are you sure about this? You seem quite doubtful.”

“I am sure about him. My nephew reaches his majority after two years, and he takes after my brother who was very dear to me. I’m sure you’ll like him.” Thranduil said darkly, not knowing how he would tell Lindir the rest.

“But there is something more, I can guess. Would you tell me what is bothering you?”

“I have to, but it isn’t anything pleasant… The main problem is my brother’s widow… my sister in law.”

“And what about her? Don’t you like her then?”

Thranduil laughed bitterly.

“I hate her! She is the most evil creature I have ever seen. She seduced my brother because I didn’t fall into her trap. Even after they were bound, she tried to plot her way to my bed. My poor brother loved her! When he found out, he faded with grief.” Thranduil told, tears in his eyes.

“Oh meleth! I’m so sorry. But if you are so sure that she betrayed your brother, how you have not punished her?”

“Because she is far too careful to be captured. Only I know her true nature… even my father was convinced that she is the most fair and noble creature in all Arda! I know this only because I have always been her main target. And the most grotesque detail in this miserable situation is that she is still pursuing the Queen’s crown!”

“But… that means she…” Lindir gasped.

“… is thinking, that I would marry her someday. And every single one who is dear to me is in great danger. She is capable of doing anything to accomplish her goal. And she is very popular in Mirkwood. Many of my people think that she would make an excellent Gueen beside me.” Thranduil continued, feeling almost sick.

“I fear for you, meleth. When she finds out about you, I cannot imagine her reaction, but surely it will be nothing pleasant.” Thranduil whispered, cradling Lindir in his arms.

“Is there nothing we could do?” Lindir asked, trying to soothe his mate’s agony.

“I have thought… there is one possibility… but I don’t like it. Though, this way I can be quite sure that she won’t harm you.”

“Tell me. I’m ready for anything, if I can ease your worries, meleth.”

“All right, but remember that this plan, if we are going to follow it, would only be temporary. I don’t like the idea, but maybe it is the best option to keep our bonding a secret, for now.” Thranduil said hesitantly.

Lindir thought for a long time before answering.

“I so hoped that I had the possibility to love you openly. But, if you really think that it is better to keep this secret then I will be ready for it. Maybe things would be different someday.”

“This secrecy breaks my heart. You deserve so much better than this. I would shout my love for you from the rooftops if I could. But whatever happens, I want you beside me, even if we had to hide our love.”

“But how can you hide our relationship completely? If I just arrive in Mirkwood with you, won’t it raise suspicions?”

“We don’t have very many minstrels in Mirkwood, and no one nearly as good as you. I can always say that I heard you here and I liked your music so much that I offered you a position as a minstrel. Your skills are incredible and no one will suspect a thing after hearing you perform.”

“So… I need to sneak through the corridors if I want to make love with my hervenn?”

“There is no need for that, meleth. I know a perfect room for you because it is connected to my chambers, but no one knows of it. It is tradition that only the King and his heir know about this secret passage. Originally, it was made to ensure the safety of the royal family. Mirkwood has always been quite an unstable place to live and rule. The best thing is that I never told anyone, not even my brother about it, so the knowledge is safe from his family. I haven’t any intentions of telling my nephew before this situation is solved. We can spend our evenings and nights together without anyone knowing. “

“That’s good to know; otherwise I would miss you terribly. I have become used to sleep in your arms.” Lindir smiled happily.

“I’m relieved that you accept this. I promise, as soon as it is safe we will announce our bond in public. I want you beside me in the place which is rightfully yours.”

“We just have to be careful. I know that ruling a realm is difficult; I have seen how Elrond always worries for his people, and Imladris is a much smaller place than Mirkwood. I don’t want to be a burden to you, meleth.”

“What I have done, to deserve your love? You are not a burden. You are my whole life, Lindir nín. Don’t ever leave me because I wouldn’t survive it.” Thranduil whispered, kissing his mate gently.

“But, what do we tell to Elrond? We cannot celebrate our bonding at all and he will surely want to know the reason.” Lindir frowned, worried.

“Our only possibility is that we have to tell him everything, hoping that he’ll understand this. Besides, if something happened it is good that someone, who we can trust completely, knows about us.”

Lindir sighed. “Maybe you are right. But he will not like this, I know it. He will worry about my safety.”

“I don’t blame him. Try to remember that he loves you, and so do I. If something happened to you because of me, I could never forgive myself.”

“So, when do we leave? I’m curious to see your home.”

“It is your home too, meleth. I thought that within a week we could start our journey. I wanted to get across the Misty Mountains before winter.”

“But what about your escort? You sent them home if I remember correctly.”

Thranduil smiled, his beautiful eyes sparkling with mirth. “We don’t need an escort. I had one only because I wasn’t well enough to travel alone. But now I am and I look forward to traveling with you alone, meleth.”

“Why?” Lindir smiled. “Would you tell me the reason for that smile on your face?”

“Because… I have a whole week with you, just two of us. Every night I can take you in my arms, hold you close, or I can make love with you whenever I want. A whole week and I can love you freely, without hiding or fear.”

“I must admit that it sounds wonderful.”

“It is decided, then. But now… I have some very vivid images in my head because we talked of making love. Kiss me, ind nín (my heart). Let me show you how much I love you.”

And Lindir did.
