Summary: Glorfindel asks Erestor for a change.
A/N: Part of the “House and Home” series. Follows “Lullaby”.
“Erestor, I wanted to talk to you,” Glorfindel said as he sat on the edge of his husband’s desk and fiddled nervously with his hands. He sat on the side so his back was to the advisor. The warrior watched as Erestor finished up a sentence then sat his quill in a holder.
“What do you want to talk about, Love?”
“I was just thinking the other day and I-”
“ADA CAN WE GO OUTSIDE?!”
“LOWER YOUR VOICE IN THE HOUSE!”
Aiwë stuck her head inside the living room and said much quieter, “Ada, can we go outside?”
Erestor sighed and acquiesced, “Yes, but only if you stay close.”
“Thank you Ada.”
“Anyway,” began Glorfindel, “I was feeling a little off the other day, and I thought that-”
“ADA I CAN’T FIND MY BOOTS!”
“I SAID LOWER YOUR VOICE IN THE HOUSE!”
This time, Pearl trounced into the living room in all her twelve year old fury, “Then how am I supposed to talk to you from the kitchen? Huh?”
Erestor glared at his daughter. “That’s the point. If you want to talk to me you come in here and speak like a lady.”
“I’m not a lady, I’m a GIRL.”
Glorfindel sighed, “Pearl, I’m trying to talk to your Father-”
“Well, so am I!”
“Pearl, mind your manners,” retorted Erestor.
“But I can’t find my boots!”
“Boots have nothing to do with manners.”
“Yes they do!”
“Pearl-”
Glorfindel suddenly stood from his perch and desk and spun around to face Erestor while he spat out, “I want to go back to work.”
Both Erestor and Pearl went quiet. Erestor cleared his throat, “Pearl, go outside and play with your sister.”
The elfling took a last look at her parents before she turned heel and ran off to play. Glorfindel stood next to the desk with his head down, fiddling with his hands again. Erestor stood and took the nervous digits in his own. Glorfindel looked up as Erestor said, “You truly want to go back to work? I thought you wanted to stay home with the children.”
Glorfindel looked nervous. “I know we planned that if we had children, I would stay home until they were older…but…” He shuffled his feet and looked away again. “It’s not that I don’t want to be with the children. I do, I really enjoy being with them. I just…I walked by the sparring yard the other day, and…”
“You miss it,” Erestor said quietly. When Pearl had come along, Glorfindel had decided he would stay home and raise her, and then had come Aiwë, then Fox, then Glaurion…Erestor sighed. He had taken over Glorfindel’s duties after Pearl was born as well as still tending to his own. The only thing he didn’t do was train the newest recruits. He left that to the more experienced guards. He did, however, train the more advanced guards.
Glorfindel nodded and sighed. “I…I don’t need to go back full time. I just…I don’t know,” he mumbled before hanging his head.
“Darling, don’t be upset,” Erestor consoled as he embraced his husband. The tiny, slim body fit so perfectly with his own. He thought quickly as he rubbed Glorfindel’s back. “How about this,” he said as he pulled back to look into Glorfindel’s eyes. “Why don’t you take over the training of some of the warriors again. The training fields are large enough that you wouldn’t have to worry about the children getting in the way if you took them with you. There are always dozens of people there to keep an eye on them. The kids wouldn’t mind going there for awhile during the day. Glaurion is old enough to go out now, so you don’t have to worry about that…”
Glorfindel’s face lit up, and Erestor couldn’t help but smile in turn. He loved making his sweet little husband happy.
“That would be wonderful,” Glorfindel said gratefully.
“Anything for you, my love.” Erestor sighed happily as Glorfindel embraced him again. Yes, anything to make Glorfindel happy. Anything.
