Chapter Eight
The first bar they went to happened to be Dominic’s local and was just down the road. ‘The Hog’s Crumb’s’ was packed as usual for a Friday night. Dominic led Elijah to the bar and ordered two half-pints. The barman looked Elijah up and down and Elijah shifted uncomfortably under his gaze, drinking his beer.
“You been in here before?”
The barman’s broad London accent was accentuated by a feminine kind of voice.
“Paul, this is Elijah. Elijah this is Paul.” Dominic cut in, then wandered over to talk to someone he obviously knew, leaving Elijah with Paul.
Elijah shook the barman Paul’s unusually smooth hand with his rough, textured one and answered his question.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been here before, Paul, but it’s a nice place!”
Elijah looked around at the happy and joyful atmosphere.
“You know, upstairs is even nicer…Do you want to see?” Paul leaned in close so only Elijah could hear.
Elijah sat in stunned silence.
Did Paul just hit on me? EWWW! GROSS! Dominic, a little help!
Paul continued to lean in and Elijah clamped his mouth shut and shook his head.
“Too bad.”
Dominic finished his conversation that seemed to have sprung out of no-where, and drained his half-pint glass. Elijah followed suit.
“See ya, Paul!”
Dominic shouted over the noise as he and Elijah quickly left the pub.
Elijah quickly caught up with Dominic, clung onto his arm and whispered in his ear.
“That Paul gave me the creeps!…You know he hit on me while you were talking!”
“Yeah, I know…It’s his way of meeting new people…plus he’s always up for easy sex.”
Elijah threw Dominic a horrified look, he knew what he was up to.
I bet he took me to that pub to try and make me act straight, to try and stop my feelings for him. Stop me hitting on him. Well it’s not going to work!
---------------------------------------------------------
The next club was called ‘The swul rangers’, was a well known gay bar, and Elijah knew it. He entered hesitantly and the bouncers looked at the newcomers with interest but let them pass. Plenty of men were in the darkened room, full of laser lights and strobe effects. Dom and Elijah sat at the bar next to a couple dressed as a bride and groom, the white, silk dress looking very wrong on a man, both locked in a passionate kiss. Elijah looked on with slight interest, while Dominic bought the drinks.
“I know what you’re up to!” Elijah shouted over the deafening music.
“What?”
Dominic tried to look innocent but his facial muscles couldn’t quite pull it off.
“You’re trying to scare me straight, taking me to these bars and your scary friend, Paul!”
“Well…OK…so I was…until you spoiled the fun!”
Elijah couldn’t help but grin. Dominic smirking right along with him.
------------------------------------------------------------
They had a few more drinks in ‘The swul rangers’ and moved on to the next bar. By eleven ‘o’ clock, they had been in many clubs, both gay and straight, downed many beers and were definitely feeling it. The current pub they had staggered into was called ‘Orion’s’ and they were nearly the only one’s in there apart from a few straggling alcoholics.
“You know what else I nearly lost.” was the random conversation they had started.
“What?” Elijah slurred slightly.
“These cufflinks!”
Dominic waved his wrists in the air, unbalanced and almost toppled from the stool.
“Well, I don’t lose things…I just forget where I put them!” Elijah continued, unaware that the two statements were basically the same.
“Well, I’ve lost everything but my sanity…oh no…there it goes!”
Dominic lifted his arm and tried to grab an invisible floating object, then they both dissolved in a fit of giggles, holding each other for support. Elijah wiped away his tears of laughter and asked thoughtfully
“Dom…seen as we’re talking about losing things… Have you ever lost you virginity to a man, yet?”
“Yet?…I already have…Paul can be very persuasive when your young…”
“Really?…I haven’t…I definitely don’t want to lose it to Paul…He gives me the creeps!…How many guys have you slept with, then?”
“Let’s get on to the next club…” said Dominic, swiftly changing the subject, apparently not drunk enough to notice when he was in dangerous waters.
They both climbed down from their stools and, wrapping an arm around each other for support, staggered from ‘Orion’s’.
On their way to the next bar they swerved past a road with yellow crime scene tape across it and a policeman on guard. Elijah stopped suddenly in the middle of the road.
“I don’t feel so good, Dom..”
Elijah swayed on the spot.
“Can’t hold your drink, can you, Lij?”
“No, it’s not that type of bad feeling…”
Elijah’s hand shot up to the wound at the back of his head, swaying profoundly. Dropping to his knees, Elijah covered his head with his arms.
“LEAVE ME ALONE!”
Slumping to the floor, Elijah hit his head on the kerb as he fell unconscious, Dominic being too drunk to catch him quick enough, the policeman rushed over and put Elijah in the recovery position before calling an ambulance. Dominic watched stunned, he hadn’t recognised the street he had found Elijah dying on…
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Elijah opened his eyes to gaze at a familiar ceiling.
Great. Back in hospital…
Elijah sat up and realised that a new bandage had been added to his collection, on his fore-head. Looking around, Elijah saw that Dominic was sat on the chair next to the bed, his head resting on the bed, snoring quietly. Elijah smiled and stroked the sensitive part of Dominic’s neck at the base of his head and Dominic shivered in his sleep. Dominic was wearing different clothes and had shaved off the facial hair that had been creeping along his chin.
I’ve been here a while then, at least Dominic’s not drunk anymore.
Dominic stirred to find that Elijah was looking at him and stroking the back of his neck.
“Hey, that tickles…” were the first words out of his mouth. Elijah smiled sweetly at him, but didn’t stop and Dominic kept his head on the bed, grinning to himself. Dominic then realised what he was doing and jerked his head from Elijah’s grasp.
He still has mixed feelings then…
“Elijah…I’ve got something to tell you…”
