They arrived.
Dom could see them rushing into the bank. Smoke and little flames of fire at the entrance. He recognized everyone though they wore black masks to hide their faces. Tom and Ben were there, Eddie had stopped talking to Ryan and joined his fellows, pulling a mask over his head, too. Though it wasn’t very useful, everyone would recognize him later. Or?
“Get down! All of you!”, Tom shouted and fired his gun two times in the air. “No one will get hurt, but all of you have to cooperate with us!”
Dom suddenly saw someone else enter the bank, with a second guy. One was blurry, the other one was clear. He was handsome and young. Dark hair, cheeky eyes. In his position as the viewer, Dom was even able to see through those masks.
But the other one…That blurry figure of a man. Why was he the only one that Dom could not see?
“The money! Where is it?”, shouted Ben at one of the workers.
And then suddenly Ryan came into view again.
“Stay here, I’ll be right back!”, he said silently to the younger Dom and rolled over to a gun that lay around. Must have fallen out of one of the policemen’s pocket. As soon as he caught it he stood up.
“Freeze! Don’t move!”, he shouted and pointed at the handsome guy.
Tom and Ben whirled around.
“Kill him! Just shoot him, you son of a bitch!”, ordered Tom loudly in the direction of the blurry man who but now turned around and faced the scene.
“Heart…”
“Don’t come any closer! I will-“
The man didn’t hear or see anything. He just shot. Three times.
Ryan fell to the ground. Young Dom started screaming.
The man fired again. Four more shots. Dom screamed on.
“Get the money!”, Tom shouted at Ben, who at once obeyed and went with Eddie in another room.
The alarmed went on. Tom, Ben, the handsome guy and the blurry man left the bank with their hands carrying cases and bags filled to the rim of money. Eddie stayed and checked on Ryan. Car wheels screeched. They were gone.
Dom still was screaming.
-----
Scene changing.
Dom found himself standing in a white gangway. Pause button again.
“Do you know where you are?” The familiar voice was back.
“The hospital.”, Dom answered as in trance.
A door opened. Nothing else moved.
People were standing around a bed. A woman, she was crying, a man beside her, a comforting hand lay on her shoulder. A doctor, a nurse.
“Do you recognize anyone?”
“Yes. The boy in the bed. That’s me.”
Start button. The scene went on.
“Will he ever be the same again, Doctor?”, the man asked.
“That depends. Mr. Reynolds, I am afraid to tell you, but any mentioning of his brother, or your family’s last name will disturb him again. We tried to explain to him, many times as you could see for yourself, that Ryan is dead, that he was murdered. But he collapsed, fell into coma again.”
Dom’s father seemed angry.
“You have kept him here for about one and a half years now and you want to tell me that the medicine that could heal him is he staying away from our family?”
“I am really sorry. I…I don’t know what to say.” The doctor looked helpless. “It’s the only way.”
“But that can’t just-“
“Don’t, Sean.”, Dom’s mother spoke, her makeup blurry from all the crying.
“But, Liv, you can’t be serious! This means we have to give him up-“
“I want him to be alive, Sean. You saw for yourself, you were there with me that day when he faced us for the first time. I don’t want him to sleep forever.” She seized Dom’s hand and pressed it gently. “And if giving him up is the only way he can stay awake and live, I am willing to make this sacrifice.”
Sean turned around and stared out of the window. Silence filled the little room for a few moments.
“So, how do you wanna name him?”, he finally asked.
“Monaghan. He will be named after my maiden name. He will carry a piece of our family with him while he lives on.” Liv paused and breathed in deeply while tears were filling her eyes again. “Dominic Monaghan.”
“…You’re nuts, Ben! What was I supposed to do?!”
When finally woken up Dom noticed that he wasn’t bound, no ropes, no handcuffs. He was covered with a blanket and lay on the couch. He could smell the dried blood on his cheeks, and sickness overcame him. He sat up and looked for the bathroom.
“Wait, Ben, he just woke up!” Eddie entered the living room. “Hey, there you are! You woke up!” He sighed deeply, sounding relieved. “What the fuck was that?”
“I… I feel sick…” That was the only answer Dom could make before emptying his stomach on the floor.
“What the…? Oh, fuck!!” Eddie paced angrily around the room.
“Eddie? Damn it, answer me!”, Dom could barely hear through the speaker of the phone.
“Yeah, Ben, I’m there. What now? – You really wanna do it? – No, I can’t. I won’t. – You never told me about him being a little freak! – I know… - But… - Ben. Ben! Shut up now! He was crying fuckin’ blood! – You know what, do it yourself.”
He slammed the receiver back on the phone and opened a window. He stood there for a while and tried to breathe.
“Can I use the bathroom?”, Dom asked calmly and got to his feet, still feeling sort of dizzy but better.
“There is none.”, Eddie answered in a monotone voice. “It wasn’t meant to be this way. I never…”
He seemed talking to himself. Dom didn’t want to interrupt his thoughts so he stayed silent.
“There’s a kitchen though. You can clean yourself there.”
Dom obeyed and disappeared behind the door, closing it tightly shut behind him. He washed the blood off his face and glanced around. That was his chance. He could flee, now! Eddie was too depressed to keep him here. He didn’t even put Dom’s handcuffs on again. Something wasn’t going the way they had all expected it. He turned the key around and opened the kitchen window. It was only now that he recognized where he was. A little forest. He knew it, eh had been here before. It all looked so familiar. He climbed through the window into newfound freedom, looked right, left and was about to run.
“You know that I can see you from here, right?” Eddie’s voice sounded behind him and made Dom turn around. Eddie leaned on the window still. “Don’t worry, I won’t keep you here any longer.”
And suddenly Dom wasn’t sure about running away after all. “So why keeping me captured before?”
“Part of the plan. But I guess it didn’t work out. He never told me about you being the boy. He just told me, go grab him and get him here!” He laughed shortly, more sad than happy. “I knew Ryan. He was a good friend of mine.”
“You were at the bank that day, weren’t you?” Now Dom finally could put some pieces of the puzzle together.
“I joined the gang after my first year at the police. Corrupt pack of asses. So I thought, why be on the loser side when I can be on the winner side? I sacrificed Ryan for my stupid thoughts. It still haunts me, the day it happened. But I had the guts to stay in the gang, not like some other people.”
He stopped and faced Dom with serious eyes.
“But I can’t kill Ryan’s brother. This would mean killing him again. I don’t wanna do that.”
“But what about you? Ben will take care of you sooner or later. You could come with me. You would be a loser again but…”, Dom smiled. “…but you could save an innocent man.”
“I died the day Ryan died. I was wrong all the time.” The phone rang again. “You gotta go. They are already on their way here.” He reached behind him and threw the maps and documents to Dom. “You might need this. Old pharmacy factory. There you will find Billy.”
Dom pressed the maps to his chest and gave Eddie a last sorrowful look, whispered “Thank you.” and ran off into the forest.
~***~
Billy could not forget that image. It was filling his head, when he closed his eyes he saw it again. Dom sitting in that chair and suddenly collapsing, crying blood. He didn’t even know if Dom was alive. They had dragged Billy out of the office as soon as the pictures reached Tom’s eye. Now he was back again in the little cave that he had been calling home for the last few days. A whole day had passed since that incident in the office. What was their next step? Billy had been able to hear steps, angry shouts, then silence again. They were gone. He didn’t think they went to the bank; it was too soon for that. They still had to do some preparations. They were checking on Dom.
Oh my God, it was him. Dom was the boy. All the time. This was no true, it could not be, this must have been just another trick to manipulate Billy. That fateful day returned to Billy’s memories. The screams, the shots, the smoke, the blood everywhere. On his hands, on his clothes, in his face, filling his lungs and eyes. That face, those eyes, wide opened in shock. Still. Motionless.
A silent ringing tone caught Billy’s attention. It came from the desk. A cell phone.
“Hello?”
“Change of plans, Billy. You stay right were you are and when I call you again you turn off the cameras, you hear me?”
“What about Dom? Is he okay?”
“Yes, he is. You follow our instructions and he won’t get hurt. Now tell me if you understood this.”
“Yeah, Ah did.”
Ben had hung up, a monotone and low beeping tone filled Billy’s ear. No, Ben had lied to him. Dom was dead already. There was no reason to follow the rules. He would make them pay fro what they did to Dom. Including himself.
