Hobbitnapped
Chapter 8
Merry, Pippin and Sam arrived at Bag End just as the Gaffer was seeing the Sheriff off. Sam approached him. “Well, What did he say?” The Gaffer turned to him and took a deep breath, “They are certain that Frodo was hobbitnapped judging by the mess in the kitchen. “We also found a piece of cloth tangled in the hedge out back. Looks like it came from an old coat. The Sheriff thinks it belongs to whoever did this.”
“Do they have any idea who it was?” Sam asked. The Gaffer shook his head. “Only that he is sure it was one of the big folk.” Sam glanced at Merry and Pippin then back at his Gaffer. “What are they doing to try to find him?” He asked. “The Sheriff sent his men out door to door to ask if anyone saw anything and a few of them went out into the woods. He just left to check with them.” The Gaffer replied. “That could take all night!” Merry protested. “What about search parties?”
“The men folk are being told to meet in the town square right after supper. Search parties will be organized there and set out at first light tomorrow.” The Gaffer told them. “TOMORROW!!” Cried Pippin. “Beggin your pardon Mr. Gamgee but that is my cousin out there! I for one cannot sit around all night doing nothing while gods know what is happening to him!”
The Gaffer sighed. “Peregrine, I understand how you feel. I love Frodo too and I owe it to Bilbo to make sure everything is done to bring Frodo back safe. But the sun is already starting to set and no one can follow a trail at night. Not even King Elessar, beggin his pardon.” Pippin opened his mouth to protest more but with a light touch from Sam he closed it again without saying a word. “Me Gaffers right Pippin, much as it pains me to say so we must wait till morning.” Sam said.
“Now, what say we go back to #3 and have a bite of supper, then we can go into town and see what’s been found out.” The Gaffer suggested. At the mention of supper, Sam’s stomach rumbled loudly reminding him that he had not had anything to eat since first breakfast. ‘Stop that’ he silently scolded his stomach. ‘I’ll bet Frodo ain’t had nothing to eat today and it ain’t likely that he will get anything tonight either!’
When they got back to the smail Bell was just setting the table. “Ah!” she said. “I had a feeling you boys would be coming back here. I made plenty to eat. Now go wash up, suppers ready.” Sam looked at his mum. “How’s Rosie” he asked blushing slightly. “She’s fine Sam, she ate a bit of soup a little bit ago and she fell back asleep.” Bell told her son. “I sent word to her parents that she was ok but would need to rest here for the night.” Bell then shooed the three boys out the door. “Go on now, get cleaned up before supper gets cold.” Hamfast cleaned up in the kitchen as the boys took to the well out back. Bell approached her husband. “Hamfast?” she said. He turned around and hugged her. “He’s been hobbitnapped.” he said. A gasp escaped Bells lips. “We, me and the boys that is, are heading into town right after supper. They’re organizing search parties for the morning.” She hugged him a little tighter then released him and went about setting supper on the table.
As soon as Sam was washed up he went in to check on Rosie. She appeared to be sleeping peacefully. He bent down and gently kissed her forehead. She sighed in her sleep. Sam blushed and quickly walked away. He joined his family and friends at the supper table. They ate quickly and without a word passing between them. Though not much food was consumed. They wanted to get into town as soon as possible.
Hamfast and the boys arrived in town just as the Sheriff was calling for everyone to quiet down. As soon as they did he began. “I know you all have heard the rumors, ‘Mad Baggins has finally flipped’” Snickers from the crowd. “I’m here to tell you the truth. Mr. Frodo Baggins was hobbitnapped just after first breakfast this morning.” A collective gasp came from those gathered. “We don’t have many leads on who did this but we suspect it was one of the big folk.” Angry murmuring from the crowd. “We found this piece of cloth that we think came from the clothing of whoever done it. Possibly from a coat or something similar.” Three hobbits in the crowd looked at each other. The one raised his hand. “Sheriff, would you mind if me and my friends got a closer look at that piece of cloth? The Sheriff motioned them up. The three of them looked at the cloth and conferred with each other. “What’s this about?” Demanded the Sheriff. The first one turned to him and said. “Well, just after tea today my friends and I were discussing what we had heard. One of them big folk walked by laughing to himself. He was drinking so we didn’t think nothing more of it. Well here’s the thing. The mans coat had a piece torn from it and while none of us is tailors, we think it was the same material as this piece here. Deputies quickly surrounded the three hobbits. “I want you to give my deputies a full description of this person.” Then he turned back to the crowd. “Now we need to set up search parties. We will set out at first light tomorrow and before we leave tonight everyone will have a description of this man.
With this done everyone set off for home. Sam doubted he would get much sleep tonight and was grateful that Merry and Pippin would be staying at Bag End with him. It was going to be a very long night.
