Chapter 8

Rúmil watched as his brothers prepared their breakfast.

“Are you sure you do not want any?” Orophin asked, offering him some bread.

“Nay, I am not hungry.”

“You will lose your strength if you go on like this,” said Haldir, joining the conversation.

“I know, but I am not…” Rúmil stopped to look at his younger brother who had opened a jar of fruit preserves. A wave of nausea washed over him when the breeze blew the aroma of strawberries his way. He immediately jumped out of his seat, leaning over the edge of the talan as he emptied the contents of his stomach onto the ground below.

It was the third day in a row that this had happened. A feeling of dread was building up inside the guardian as he thought of a possible cause for his illness. ‘No, it cannot be,’ he thought. ‘It must be the repressed sadness over seeing Legolas with Orophin that is making me sick now.’

“Are you alright?” Haldir was immediately by Rúmil’s side, one arm around his brother. Rúmil said nothing, but pulled himself out of Haldir’s embrace.

“Come, you need to see a healer. I will take you back to the city. Orophin will manage alone until they send replacements.”

“Nay, I am fine! Just leave me alone,” Rúmil burst out as he pushed his brother away roughly.

“You are not well…” Haldir tried to reason with the younger Elf, but the glare Rúmil sent his way told him it this was not the best time. He decided to let it go for the moment.

“So it is true,” Rúmil said quietly to himself, his hand covering the wound in his side. He felt it when he stood face-to-face with the Orc, felt the instinctive need to protect thee ine inside him as he covered his belly when he should pierced the vile creature instead.

He could barely hear the commotion as his brothers ran to his rescue. ‘Let them kill me,’ he thought, ‘for I do not want to have to live through this…” And with that the Galadhrim fell to the ground as he lost consciousness.

“How are you feeling?” Haldir asked when his brother finally opened his eyes. Rúmil looked away, not answering. The older Elf took it for nothing more than that his sibling was distraught over his injury. “The healers say you will just fine…” he said, thinking it best not to tell Rúmil what else they had said.

“Is that all they said?” Rúmil asked softly.

“Nay,” Haldir answered, matching his brother’s somber tone. “They also said that…,” he hesitated as he tried to speak the words, “they said that you are pregnant, pen-neth.”

Rúmil did not seem at all surprised by the news, but tears began to stream down his cheeks nonetheless.

“Do not cry,” Haldir pleaded, rubbing away a tear with his thumb. He wished he could take Rúmil in his arms and comfort him but held back for he did not want to hurt the wounded Elf. “Everything will be alright…” Rúmil shook his head in disagreement. “Aye, it will be,” Haldir insisted. “Legolas loves you… you will get through this.”

Then mention of his lover’s name only made things worse for Rúmil, but he tried to hold back the tears that flooded his eyes. He did not want to tell Haldir about Legolas and Orophin, not now.
