change of plans

Chapter seven Change of plans?

“Hang on, I am coming, I’m coming.”
He frowned when he found a flustered and panting Mistalas on his doorstep. Not wasting time he opened his door completely and ushered the other inside. “Mistalas. What is it? You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Come, sit down, the fire is not died out yet. I’ll get you something to drink.”

He hurried and was back besides the upset elf in an instant. He was pleasantly surprised when the other threw himself at him and cried his heart out. He sat down and started a soothing rubbing motion on the shocking back.

Between his cries and intakes of breath he managed to tell the elder elf what was bordering him.

He was shocked when he heard and shook his head at the pain the other was in. His hold tightened. “Don’t you worry, you can stay here for as long as you like. Go to sleep in my bed. I need to go to Haldir, tell him you are here or he’ll worry.”

The pleading look halted him in his tracks and he sat down again. “Don’t you want Haldir to know you’re safe?”
Coirëhón smiled meekly. “Of course I do, but I don’t want the others to know I am here. They’ll tell them.”
The smith sat down and shook his head. “Nay, Rumil and Orophin might be blabbermouths, they are good at keeping a secret when it has to remain one. They’re your friends and if you don’t want others to know they’ll hold silent.”

He jumped and grabbed a sword when he heard the door being opened and hurried down to fight off any intruder but relaxed when he saw it was Haldir. “You could scare someone to death, do you know that.”

He approached the worried warden, whose eyes asked the questions he dared not speak. “Aye, he’s here. Gravely upset. Sit down.” He forced the other to sit down. “He wants to stay here and I told him he can.” Haldir sighed relieved when he realised no harm had befallen the other. The smith grinned when he noticed the hair clip in the white hair. “He doesn’t want the Imladrian elves to find him. And I can understand why.”
Haldir looked at him. “He told you?”
“Aye, he did.” There was sadness in the voice, the same sadness Haldir and his brothers felt.

Haldir stood. “Is he awake?” When he received a nod he turned to go to him. “I’ll just have a small talk to him. We won’t tell anyone he’s here.”

Haldir looked rather forlorn when he returned but his eyes spoke for him and the others let out a relieved sigh. “Where is he?”
Haldir shook his head, indicating to his brothers he would speak of it later. “He’s safe. He seems to have developed a sudden fear or hatred towards Imladris.”
Elladan nodded in understanding. “I shall go to my assigned room then. Maybe he’ll come back if I’m no longer here.” Wordlessly he left.

Rumil wanted to go after him but his brother’s question stilled his legs. “Why do you think he ran from Elladan, Haldir?” Rumil turned round and saw his brother slump down on the chair. “I know not, Phin.”

He hung his head and cried his tears. “He ran to the smith. He’s staying there until they’ve left. But you can’t tell that to anyone.”
Rumil and Orophin nodded. “Do you think they know who hurt him so?”
Haldir shrugged. “I don’t know anything anymore. I want to help him, but how can I?”
Rumil sat down and pulled his brother in an embrace, immediately joined by Orophin. “Give it time, Haldir. Broken hearts are not mended over night. And he’s on the road to recovery. He even made you a hair clip, already.”
Haldir smiled and his hand touched the item. “I know. I’m sorry.”
Orophin shook his head. “Don’t be. Tell you what. We will visit him daily and enlighten his life further. We have enough things that need fixing. The smith can do that while we talk. That way the others won’t find out.”
Haldir nodded and took new hope from those words.

Galadriel jumped when Celeborn walked in and closed the door by throwing it shut. She looked at him in concern and worry. He’d only do that when gravely upset. And when he was she even feared him.

He plunged down and growled, making her jump and back up. Noticing this his eyes settled on her and he instantly mellowed a little. “Things are getting out of control.” He stood and started pacing. “Mistalas is now staying at the smith’s, which is a good thing, for he needs a father figure and Elladan is planning to go. And there’s nothing I can do to stop it or he’ll die and take Elrohir and Elrond with him for sure.”

He growled again and threw over a chair. “And now I find out Mistalas is Coirëhón.”
Galadriel frowned. “The missing Imladrian elf?”
Celeborn nodded and threw over another object. “And Elladan’s missing lover. And we don’t know what happened. Did he walk away from Elladan? Did Elladan hurt him? It all just doesn’t make sense.” He growled again and plunged down on the chair, looking defeated.

Galadriel sighed and embraced him from behind. “Let’s put everything in the right spot first and look at it like that. Maybe Erestor can find out what happened?”
Celeborn looked at her gratefully. “Could you contact him? I’m too worked up, right now.”
She nodded and instantly made contact with the advisor.

“Glorfindel! Glorfindel!”

The blond frowned when Erestor ran inside, looking heavily upset and shocked. He stood up and placed his hands on the other’s shoulders in an effort to calm him down. “What is it, Erestor?”
Erestor’s eyes were wide and horror lay in them. “Coirëhón. Mistalas.”
Glorfindel frowned. “Who’s Mistalas?”
Erestor sat down and caught his breath. “Coirëhón. He left.”
Glorfindel shook his head in confusion. “You found him and he left again? Or…?”
Erestor looked at him angrily. “Are you always this slow? Mistalas is Coirëhón. And Elladan is planning to leave and we need to find out what happened between them to prevent it and…”
Glorfindel kneeled and sighed. “Calm down, Erestor, please. Elladan is planning to sail, you say. Why?”
“Because he refuses to take Elrond and Elrohir with him and he no longer wishes to life. His heart is gone, Glorfindel, or have you forgotten?”
Glorfindel shook his head. “Nay, but if this Mistalas really is Coirëhón then there’s still a chance if Elladan stays there.”
Erestor looked lost and Glorfindel smiled. “From what I’ve heard Mistalas doesn’t look or act like the Coirëhón we know, so it is possible Elladan doesn’t recognize him.”
“But he’d recognize Elladan!” His voice was desperate.
Glorfindel nodded, frowning. “Aye, but the fact that he changed his appearance tells us he doesn’t want to recognize or be recognized. And Elladan will not recognize him because he’s weakened. Only touch will allow him to see it and I am pretty sure Coirëhón will avoid it.”

He started pacing and moulded his thoughts on the new information. He nodded when he reached a conclusion. “Contact Galadriel or Celeborn. They have to make sure this Mistalas really is Coirëhón and there’s only one way to do that: have him touch Elladan and monitor the twin’s bodily reaction closely.”
Erestor nodded, pleased the other was coming up with a plan. He’d be able to handle himself with a plan. “And then? And how do we find out what happened between them? Why did he leave? It is obvious they didn’t fight.”
Glorfindel nodded. “And I strongly doubt his pride getting the better of him now was responsible. Nay, something happened, but what?” He shrugged, knowing they would not find the answer easily or it would have happened already.

He looked at Erestor and looked worried. “You look tired, meldir. Why don’t you let me contact Galadriel and Celeborn.”
Erestor looked cross. “I need to do someth Glo Glorfindel, or I’ll go insane.”
Glorfindel smiled and squished the other supportively. “Why don’t you try and find out what exactly Coirëhón did the days before he left. Maybe we’ll find our answer that way.”
Erestor sighed. “I hope so. And something’s wrong with Elrond too. But what, Glorfindel, what?”
The blond shrugged. “Let’s just assume it is because of Elladan, fearing to lose both his children, for if Elladan goes anywhere, Elrohir will follow. We need to focus on finding the reason and trust our ‘Lóriën friends to figure it out.”
Erestor allowed the blond to steer him inside.

Elrond sighed as he walked through the woods. He’d managed to get all the information on Mistalas there was and now made his way to the smith.

Once there he admired the work on display. The elf had great skills. It reminded him of Coirëhón’s uncle’s work.

He closed his eyes, calling back old times; times in which ouldould frequently visit the house and watch a little Coirëhón run amok. Already in those days the elf possessed his heart but Elrond had never spoken of it, though he feared his family might know the real reasons behind his frequent visits. Why else would they have asked him to look after their son when they sailed? He had happily promised it but he still didn’t agree on keeping his uncle’s identity from the elf.

He shook his head to clear it and smiled bemused when he saw the door to the private quarters standing open. Carefully he walked closer and his eyes widened when he saw Coirëhón kissing Haldir. The pain in his heart doubled at the knowledge Elladan had now truly lost him.
/Make him happy, Haldir./

He silently turned and left. /It was foolish of me to come here. I should not be assuring him his secret is safe with me, but just pretend I don’t know it’s him./

Elrohir smiled at his twin, but it faded when he saw his face. “What is wrong?” He sighed at the look. “Besides everything that was already wrong?”
Elladan sighed. “Somehow I managed to scare away Mistalas.”
Elrohir sat down. “And?”
“And now he’s hiding somewhere and Haldir, Rumil and Orophin won’t tell us where or why. But they know.”

Elrohir sat down and pulled his twin closer. “Why don’t you take a walk? Get your head cleared?”
Elladan shook his head. “There’s no more beauty in it, Ro.”

He looked at him and there was a trace of eternal regret in the eyes. “I shall sail for Valinor.” Elrohir screamed, jumped up and grasped him, but Elladan freed himself. “I have to, Ro. I’m fading and the last bit of hope I had you took from me when you forced me to come here. My star is gone.”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay, don’t speak like that. There’ll be another. Or we can find him.”
Elladan shook his head. “I don’t want another, Ro, and you won’t find him because he doesn’t want you to. Either you’ll let me sail for Valinor or watch me die.”
Elrohir angrily wiped his tears away. “Nay, nay, you are not thinking straight. Adan, I need you.”
Elladan sighed. “I’m empty Ro. There’s nothing for me to live for. Maybe Valinor can heal me. I don’t want to sail and forget, but it’s the only way. I don’t want to take you and adar with me.”

Elrohir cried and pleaded with him but Elladan didn’t even seem to hear and walked out of the room. When it was time for dinner Elrohir still sat on the floor, crying and pleading. Rumil, who couldn’t make the twin stop, fearfully ran for help. Galadriel and Celeborn decided to place one guard on Elladan at all times.
