What Kind of Fool?

The next morning, Elijah was awoken by a gentle kiss to the forehead. As his eyes fluttered open, he spotted Josh standing over him. “Time to get up.”

Elijah smiled. “I could get used to that.”

“I’m sure you could.” Josh moved away from the bed. “I wasn’t sure how long you give yourself before you have to leave, so I’ve given you an hour to be safe.”

Elijah sat up. “Well, that’s what I usually give myself. Though I’m not sure I would have woken up if you hadn’t made me.”

“Glad to be of service.” Josh pulled the slightly crushed cigarette packet from his pocket and looked in. “I’d offer you one, but I’m kinda running low.”

Elijah shrugged. “I have plenty. If I’m being honest, I haven’t really wanted to smoke these past few days.”

Josh raised an eyebrow. “So, nicotine withdrawal on top of everything else and you’re still wonderful. I really was stupid.”

Elijah moved to Josh’s side. “Yes, but ‘was’ being the operative word. Fresh start, remember?”

Josh smiled as he instinctively moved to kiss his love. “I remember.”

Elijah gently caught the older man’s face as he moved to pull away. “I’ve missed this so much.”

Josh looked a little wary. “So you’re not upset about me doing it?”

“Don’t be silly.” Elijah briefly pressed his lips to Josh’s before continuing, “I’d be more upset if you didn’t.”

“Then I cease to see a problem.” Josh placed a soft kiss on the tip of Elijah’s nose, before saying, “You should get ready.”

“Yes, boss!” Elijah teased, moving towards the bathroom. “I’m on my way.”

Josh smiled to himself as he finally lit his first cigarette of the day. He knew he still had a lot to make up for, but having Elijah’s reassurance made him more confident that they would survive this.

His thoughts were interrupted by a sharp tap on the door. A strong Scottish accent called, “Elijah! Are you awake?”

“Shit!”

From within the bathroom, Josh could hear Elijah drop something. He moved to poke his head around the bathroom door. “Everything alright?”

“They’re early.” Elijah’s voice could be heard from behind the shower curtain, only just louder than the flow of water. “You’d better let them in.”

“Alright.” Josh hesitantly moved towards the door, not sure how others would react to his being there. Especially not the two people he had basically accused of seducing his boyfriend.

Dom looked up as the door opened. Suspicious at the stranger, he asked, “Where’s Elijah?”

“He’s, um, he’s in the shower. He asked me to let you in.” Josh stood back to allow the two men to enter. “You must be Dom and Billy.”

“And you must be Josh.” Billy’s voice was friendlier than Josh had been expecting. “Sean told us you were here.”

Josh looked down guiltily. “Yeah, well…what can I say? I’m an idiot.”

Dom turned to face him. “We won’t deny that. But at least you admit to it.”

“Dom!” Billy gently chastised his friend. Turning to the American, he offered by way of apology, “He’s grown very protective of Elijah.”

“So I gathered.” Josh smiled a little. “Actually, I wanted to thank you for looking after him so well. I didn’t want to see it before, but you’ve been good to him.”

“You’re welcome.” Dom’s tone had thawed a little. “Though we did it for Elijah, not you.”

“I know.” Josh turned to regard the other man. “But all the same, thank you.”

Just then, Elijah poked his head around the door. “Josh, can you please get my clothes? I didn’t think I’d need to bring them in with me.”

Josh chuckled at this. “One sec.”

As the older American went to retrieve his boyfriend’s clothes, Elijah turned to Dom. “Don’t give him such a hard time, Dom. We’re trying to make a fresh start.”

Dom sighed. “I’m sorry, Lij. I just…I don’t want you getting hurt again.”

“And he won’t,” Billy soothed. “I think he knows what he’s doing.”

Elijah was about to reply when Josh returned with his clothes. “Thanks, Josh.”

“You’re welcome.” Josh took the opportunity to steal a brief kiss as he handed the clothing over.

As Elijah disappeared back into the bathroom, Billy turned to the taller man. “So, how long are you around for?”

Josh shrugged. “As long as I can be, I guess.”

Dom gave him a cautious look. “You do know who you’re likely to run into, don’t you?”

“Dom!” Billy was again driven to apologise. “Sorry about him.”

Josh shook his head. “He has a point. I’ve already thought about this, and…he’s right. It’ll be hard. But Elijah’s worth it.”

Dom smiled a little. “Alright. As long as you’ve thought about it.”

“Thought about what?” Elijah emerged from the bathroom, fully dressed and rubbing his hair with a towel.

Josh moved to take the towel off him. “Come here,”

Billy raised an eyebrow. “Are you his boyfriend or his mother?”

Elijah giggled a little at this. “I often wonder that,” he teased.

“You’d have asked me if we were alone,” Josh pointed out, gently squeezing most of the water from his lover’s hair before handing back the towel. “Don’t deny it.”

Elijah gave him a helpless look. “But you do it so much better than I do.”

Dom laughed. “The fact that he’s managed so far becomes irrelevant.”

Elijah gave a look of mock-fear. “Don’t tell him that, Dom!”

Josh smiled. “Don’t worry. I didn’t hear anything.”

Billy shook his head. “Should we wait for you outside?”

Elijah shook his head. “You’re welcome to stay.”

“Just don’t expect much out of this one for about ten minutes,” Josh teased as he led Elijah to the edge of the bed.

Billy smiled as he moved to sit on one of the chairs in the room. “So I suppose we should stay for Josh’s benefit.”

Elijah had settled on the floor by the edge of the bed, his head almost resting in Josh’s lap. “I’m not that bad!” he protested.

“Of course not.” Josh began to work his fingers through his boyfriend’s hair, gently teasing out the tangles.

Dom grinned as he moved to sit by Billy. “I think you were right when you suggested mother.”

Josh looked up at this. “What can I say? It’s who I am.”

“Never said there was anything wrong with it,” Dom returned.

Billy watched Elijah intently, amused by the sheer contentment in the younger man’s face. “I’m expecting him to start purring any minute now.”

“Give him time,” Josh teased, earning a gentle nip in the leg from Elijah. Stopping his hands, he threatened, “You want me to stop?”

Elijah looked up at this, his eyes wide and sorrowful. “You wouldn’t.”

“Wouldn’t I?” Josh’s eyes betrayed the fact that Elijah was right, though his tone suggested otherwise. “Care to make a bet on that?”

Elijah gave his boyfriend a pleading look. “I’m sorry.”

Josh smiled affectionately as he began to comb his fingers through Elijah’s hair again. “You know how to work me, I’ll give you that.”

“It’s the eyes,” Billy commented. “He only needs to force eye contact and he’s won.”

“And there I was thinking he only used that on me.” Josh glanced down at Elijah. “More devious than you look, aren’t you?”

Dom glanced at his watch. “We should think about heading off. I don’t think Peter will appreciate us stalling his production schedule now he’s in full flow.”ElijElijah let out a reluctant sigh. “I suppose you’re right.” He looked up at Josh. “Are you coming to the set?”

Josh shook his head. “Not today. There’s a few things I need to do. I’ll see you when you get back.”

The couple indulged in a gentle kiss before Elijah stood up. “Then I’ll see you later.”

Josh nodded, before suddenly remembering something. “Wait a sec. I have something for you.”

He went over to his bag and rifled through, soon finding what he was looking for. He threw the CD case at Elijah. “If you can, try to listen to it before you get back.”

Elijah looked down at the case he had caught. The label was blank, as was the CD itself when he looked. Nothing seemed to betray what the CD was.

Josh smiled. “There’s a note inside the sleeve. Read it you you listen.”

Elijah nodded, still clearly confused. “Okay. See you later, Josh.”

As the three Hobbit actors left, Josh started to get ready to go out himself. He knew he had a lot to do before Elijah returned if he wanted to carry out his plan.

As he opened the door to leave, he almost walked straight into Clea. “Oh, hey, Clea.”

Clea raised an eyebrow. “You going somewhere?”

“There’s some things I need to get before Elijah comes back. If I can find them.”

Clea smiled as she linked arms with the man. “In that case, I got here just in time.”

~EW*~JH~

It was early afternoon before Elijah found himself with a break of more than a couple of minutes. The hours before had dragged as he kept thinking back to the CD, currently sitting in his trailer. Though he managed to keep concentration enough for Peter to be happy with, his thoughts still kept drifting back to what it could be.

And so, as soon as Peter had told the Hobbits to take a break he had raced back, unable to bear the suspense any more. Sean had wanted to follow but had been stopped by Dom and Billy, who knew that Elijah would want to be alone for this.

Hands trembling with anticipation, Elijah placed the CD into the player and pressed Play. The song that started was one that he’d never heard before, but the words instantly stood out for him.

Can’t see the wood for all of the trees
Can’t hear the wind for the breeze that whispers
Voice in your head…you like what it said
So what can you do but listen to it?

Intrigued, Elijah had opened the note tucked into the sleeve. The writing was neat, as though Josh had put every effort into the note, rather than the scrawl Elijah was used to.

What kind of fool
Lays all that’s precious to waste?
What kind of fool
Leaves all their treasure to rust in the rain?
They’ll need it again when the sky clears
What kind of fool
Won’t discover the jewel
‘Til the dust clears?
Fools like us…

As the chorus played, Elijah forced himself to pull his concentration from the words of the song to the words on the note.

Elijah,

Whilst on her quest to make me realise what an idiot I’ve been, Clea forced me to listen to this song. I’d never heard it before, but I think it sums the situation up perfectly. I was too stupid to see what I had because Orlando’s voice in my head was too tempting (that makes sense when you’ve heard the first verse).

With any luck, we’ll be speaking again by the time you hear this and so I feel I can write this next bit. Though I freely admit that this is mostly my fault, I feel that the “Fools like us” bit sums both of us up. I don’t mean that because you’ve done anything – more because…well, because you have to admit, neither of us really knew what we had until we lost it.

Whatever happens, though, I want you to know this – you will always be my moon, and no matter how sweet the stars seem in future I will resist them (that makes sense when you’ve heard the later verses)

All my love,
xJx

Elijah had to fight back tears as the mixture of song words and Josh’s note pulled at his heart. He knew that Josh was right – this had been two-sided, and he respected his boyfriend for being so honest.

Fools who want more than they’ve treasured before
Wanting the dawn of the brightest morning
Reach for the stars ‘cause they’re sweeter by far
Than the moon, ‘though she’s brighter
And closer to you…

He was so caught up in emotion that he barely heard the knock at the door. Rushing to turn the song off, he called, “Come in.”

Sean cautiously poked his head around the door. “They couldn’t hold me back any more,” he explained. “Is everything alright?”

Elijah nodded. “Everything’s fine. I just…I had to be alone for a while.”

Sean walked into the trailer, his eyes falling on the tears in the younger man’s eyes. “Are you sure? Nothing’s happened?”

Elijah shook his head, still holding Josh’s letter to his chest. “It’s just…it’s just something Josh did for me. A good thing,” he hastily added.

Sean smiled at this. “That’s okay, then. Where is Josh, anyway?”

Elijah shrugged. “He said he had stuff to do. I just hope he isn’t avoiding the set because of -”

“I’m sure he isn’t,” Sean cut in. “Though I won’t pretend it won’t be awkward, I don’t think Josh will let that stop him from being here with you.”

Elijah smiled. “You’re right, as usual. I don’t even know why I thought that.”

Just then, Clea breezed into the trailer. “Hey guys. How’s it going?”

“You’re very cheerful,” Elijah commented. “You only just get here?”

Clea nodded. “I can’t tell you where I’ve been, but let me just say, I hope you don’t have plans for tonight.”

Elijah shook his head. “Not that I’m aware of.”

“Good. Keep it thay.”ay.” Clea grinned. “Anyway, I have to shoot off, but I just thought I’d come and see how you were doing.”

“I’m fine, thank you, Clea.” Elijah sounded taken aback by his friend’s enthusiasm. “See you later?”

“You might. Don’t count on it, though.”

Without giving either man a chance to answer, Clea ran out of the trailer. Elijah turned to his companion. “Well that was…odd.”

Sean nodded. “Never mind. I’m sure you’ll find out what’s going on soon enough.”

Outside the trailer, Clea smiled to herself as she listened to the conversation. Oh, you will, Lij, she thought to herself. And you’re going to love it when you do.
