It had all happened so fast. With no warning, and no chance for them to try to put up a fight.

There were orcs everywhere…

Now

Merry growled quietly as he nearly cut his hand on a steak knife. He threw the knife back into the sink and glanced over at Pippin, who was putting more wood in the oven. He winced when Pippin nearly dropped the wood on the floor and quickly looked around to see if anyone noticed. Satisfied that no one witnessed what had almost happened, he returned his attention to the dishes.

Merry ran. Boromir had told him and Pippin to hide, and he wanted to do just that. But Pippin had mentioned Legolas.

The elf was helpless, unconscious for unknown reasons. He only had Gimli to protect him; Aragorn had gone to help Boromir. The dwarf couldn’t hold off a swarm of orcs and Uruk-Hai all by himself, he needed help.

And Merry and Pippin were the only ones left.

Now

“Did you hear? He is returning today.”

Merry looked up from the pot he was scrubbing and glanced at the two slaves who were making bread. The old woman tried to hush the little girl, not wanting the head cook to hear, but the child kept on talking.

“The soldiers were saying something about a riot,” the girl said while she added more flour to the bread dough. “They said Lord Sam was returning to gather more men to fight the rebels.”

Merry nearly stopped breathing. Rebels. ‘Aragorn.’

Gimli was surrounded by orcs when the two hobbits burst into the clearing. They skid to a stop, nearly tripping over dead bodies, and glanced around for Legolas.

Pippin saw him first and grabbed his cousin’s arm. “There!” Merry looked to where Pippin had pointed and saw the elf laying at the base of a tree, nearly hidden by the surrounding bushes. He was safe, for the moment, and Merry turned his attention to Gimli.

The dwarf was swinging his axe wildly, trying to keep the orcs away from the tree. Merry glanced at the many orcs lying dead on the forest floor. It was clear the dwarf need little help, if he needed it at all. But Merry and Pippin were determined to help in any way the could.

Now

Pippin had now heard the girl as well, and had stopped working to listen. Merry caught his eye and shook his head, silently telling the younger hobbit to get back to work before he was noticed.

Pippin nodded and reluctantly went back to shoving wood into the stove, still listening to the child.

“They say that there were elves there,” the girl said excitedly, now kneading the dough. “Can you imagine it, mama? Elves!”

Merry’s eyes widened. If elves were in the city, something big must be happening.

Merry had just killed his third orc. He quickly pulled his sword out of the kingking body and glanced around anxiously for his cousin. He sighed, relieved, when he saw Pippin standing near Legolas. They were being ignored for the moment, the orcs focusing on Gimli and Merry, the ones who had actually killed a few of the orcs.

Now

The girl finally stopped talking when the head cook walked over to them. Merry held his breath, afraid the man had heard what she had been saying.

“You there! Little girl!”

The child glanced quickly at her mother, who was clearly frightened, before turning to face the man. “Yes, sir?”

The man handed her a large tray, heavily laden with seedcakes. “Take these to the captains’ wing.”

Merry barely repressed a sigh of relief when he realized the cook hadn’t heard anything. He rather liked the girl.

Merry jumped, startled. He glanced quickly at Pippin. “The Horn of Gondor!”

Pippin paled and looked towards Gimli. “Boromir and Aragorn need help, Gimli.” He knelt by Legolas, who was still unconscious. “We’ll take care of him”

Gimli hesitated, torn between protecting his friend and helping the men. He finally nodded, realizing that there were no more orcs left in the clearing. “I’ll go. Stay here and hide.”

Merry nodded and walked over to stand beside his cousin, watching as Gimli ran into the forest.

Now

Merry and Pippin walked quickly towards the Healer’s chambers, having finally been allowed to restock their supplies. “Do you know what we need, Merry?”

Merry looked at his cousin, smiling slightly. “Of course I do, Pip.”

Pippin nodded and stopped in front of a small door, knocking quietly. After a few moments, the door opened and an old man stuck his head out. “Yes?” he asked, before seeing the two hobbits. “Well now! It’s been a while since I’ve seen you two!” He opened the door wider and stepped back, allowing the hobbits to enter. “What can I get you today, young hobbits?”

Merry smiled, he liked the old healer. Liran had been kind to them from the first moment they met him, which was uncommon these days. Most people only cared about others if it could improve their situation. They had nothing to offer the old healer, and Liran knew that. But he didn’t care.

Merry shook himself from his thoughts and quickly went over his mental list. “We’re out of Pine Oil, Black Root, and Corn Poppy.”

Liran nodded and walked over to a shelf filled with jars. “You have to be careful with that oil, you know,” he told them, looking through his jars. “Too much and it’ll make your friend ill.”

Merry nodded. “We know, Liran,” he said, smiling. “You tell us every time we ask for it.” He grabbed Pippin’s arm, realizing the young hobbit was about to go ‘help’ the healer find what they needed. He glanced sharply at his cousin, causing Pippin to roll his eyes.

“And the Black Root is for bruises only,” Liran said, putting a few jars on a nearby table. “Don’t be putting it on cuts.” He looked over he hhe hobbits, frowning. “This is the last time I can give you Black Root for a while. You can only use it for four weeks at a time.”

Merry nodded, sighing. “We know, Liran.”

Liran smiled and handed the jars to Pippin, who had freed himself from Merry’s grip. “You go on now, and say hello to your friend for me.”

Pippin smiled and handed one of the jars to Merry so he wouldn’t drop it. “Well will,” he said, walking towards the door. “Take care, Liran.”

“You too, young hobbits,” the man replied, watching as the hobbits walked out the door. He glanced at his jars, moving a few so the guards couldn’t tell how much he had given his friends, then walked over to close the door. “You too.”
