24 hours time limit. Otherwise Dom’s going to die. Orlando.
This couldn’t be. No, this must be some kind of dream!
“What does this mean exactly?”, Billy asked with a trembling voice.
“Well, this means that we have 24 hours to get Dom out of there and by the way kill Viggo.”, explained Bean calmly.
“But then, we must go! Now! What are we waiting for? I’ve got everything what I need to kill off that son of a bitch!”, Billy shouted.
“That’s not so easy. You see, some of us are vampires.”, answered Elijah and bared his teeth; so did Bean. “We have to wait till the sun goes down, then we can take off.”
Billy suddenly felt very small and helpless. He just couldn’t go out there alone, on his own and fight Viggo. He knew Dom and the others had put a lot of faith in him, but what if he wasn’t the one they had believed in? He started pacing through the room. He wanted to save Dom so badly. It just couldn’t be that now that he was aware of his feelings that Dom was gone. Billy rubbed his eyes till they were red and sore. He couldn’t leave Dom on his own. He had felt his pain. He wanted Dom back.
“Billy, I promise you, we will rescue Dominic, but we need a little bit more time. We need to do some more preparations. As soon as the sun goes down we will get you to the docks.”, said Elijah when he saw how sad Billy looked.
Billy nodded in respond.
A quiet beep tone could be heard a new message window showed itself on the monitor.
“A new message from Orlando!”
Couldn’t write more in my last message because I wasn’t alone.
It must happen tonight. Viggo will try to make a deal with Billy, he becomes a vampire and one of Viggo’s slaves or he will kill Dom. I gave Dom the injection, I’m sorry, I just had to! I hadn’t had the time to test it, it just had to be Dom right away! I only had this one shot. You didn’t see him! He was a mess! He had already red eyes, Elijah! Viggo can’t kill him with sunlight and the blood lust will not torture Dom. I will send you another message if I can, then I will tell you if Dom has transformed completely.
I will wait tonight at 9p.m. down at the docks. I will take only Billy to Viggo, you others have to follow us quietly, there will be some more guys that will be with me. You have to wait with your attack till I give you the sign! It’s important! Trust me, I know what I do.
“Now that’s good news! Bloody Orlando. Elijah, it was too early for the injection! He knew that! We wanted to use it for…”
“I know, Karl, but I believe him. He had no choice otherwise he wouldn’t have done that. It must have been terrible. I can’t even imagine…”
“What injection? Why too early?” Billy was confused. It seemed that nobody wanted to talk to him anymore.
“The injection will transform Dom into a human being but only for 24 hours. We didn’t test it yet on a real vampire, that’s why it was too early. I really hope it has worked.”
Billy looked around, nervous and annoyed, seeing tensed and anxious faces. “I must…go.”, he suddenly said and vanished through the door. He went down the long corridor till he reached his room. He entered and sat down on his bed. And then he felt it. His heart ached, sweat was pouring off him, his hands trembled, his eyes hurt. With great effort he suppressed a scream. This was not his pain. It was Dom’s.
~***~
Dom opened his eyes slowly. He was lying curled up on the floor. The first thing he saw were heavy chains which still were tied to his hands and which he had torn out of the ceiling some hours ago. Next thing he realized was the unbelievably strong smell of blood, felt the thick and heavy air inside the little room which almost didn’t allow him to breath comfortably. He tried to roll over on his back; every inch of his body ached. Damn it, he had no idea how much this process would hurt! He ran his tongue over his upper teeth. They had vanished. There were no long canine teeth anymore. He sat up carefully and in slow motion and blinked once, twice. Something was wrong. Well, maybe not wrong, but strange. The window was open a little bit and let in a ray of sunlight. It shone directly at Dom’s stomach. He immediately stood up and backed away from the ray. His fingers touched the place where the sun had touched him. No wound. No hole or something in that direction. He was still alive. And then he realized it. There was no blood lust anymore. He breathed in deeply through his nose. No, nothing at all. A smile spread over his face. So it had worked!
Dom went over to the window and pushed the wooden wings open completely. At once the room filled itself with pure midday sunlight. The sun stood high in the sky. Dom looked out and saw nothing but water. He was trapped in some kind of tower which belonged to a little castle or villa. It was placed on a little island and if he tried hard he was able to recognize a skyline in some distance. So, this island lay somewhere before the coast of New York City.
He closed his eyes and sighed. How long has it been since he had been able to enjoy the sunlight, the fresh breeze, the blue sky. He had almost forgotten that it had been quite a good life as a human being. He missed it. Living the life of a vampire had really some negative sides, too. The touch of another person was so soft that he nearly couldn’t feel it. A drop of water on a hot stone. He mainly lived at night, when darkness surrounded him. In the first few years it was something special, something new and exciting. The night creature. But as time went by it became a regular thing and sometimes really stressing and annoying. Hiding from the sunlight. Afraid of sunlight.
The thought that he would turn into that awful creature again made him furious. If only that damn injection would work longer. And if it only hadn’t this disadvantage of this painful transformation he would have done it again and again. Only to be a human being, a normal man. So he could be with Billy. Yes, the thought of the Scotsman with those amazingly green eyes had kept him alive. He owed his strength and will to fight to Billy.
If he only were a normal man…
~***~
Billy had been walking around in the city for two hours now. He just couldn’t stand the bluish corridors, the computers, the armor and the preparations that everyone made for “the great rescue” as Bean had called it. Still there had been no message from Orlando that Dom survived the procedure and really transformed into a human being. Not knowing this they had to be prepared for everything that could happen. Billy had left when everyone was just rushing around and passing on information from one to another Billy didn’t understand anyway.
Billy walked passed shops, buildings, cars and other people. Nobody seemed to notice something. Anything. They kept on living their lives as if nothing was going on. As if the didn’t knew that if Billy wasn’t able to resist Viggo and kill him that they all would fall under the regime of the greatest vampire seen on earth! Well, in fact, nobody believed in vampires any longer, so why worry, right? But they couldn’t be just so…naïve. Billy realized the sky getting darker each minute. And this was nearly impossible for it was only 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
Without being aware of it Billy reached the building where he lived. He went upstairs and entered his little flat. He stepped into complete darkness. The curtains and blind were covering the windows so that no ray of light would be let in. Billy switched on the light. The buzzing sound of his still running computer ringed in his ears, the smell of bed sheets and pillows tickled his nose. He closed the door shut behind him and went over to the messy couch. Dom hadn’t tidied up his sleeping place, had left everything the way it was when he had woken up. Billy sat down and seized for the blanket. He led it to his nose and breathed the scent of it in deeply. It still smelled of Dom. He lay down on the not quite cozy couch and didn’t move for a few minutes.
He had made his decision. He had been thinking about it since the moment Viggo took Dom with him. If he wasn’t able to save Dom, if he failed, he would end his life. For there would be nothing to live for any longer. Billy would disappear with Dom. He wouldn’t give Viggo the satisfaction of possessing him, Billy, and Dom.
~***~
It was shortly after the sun went down, around 8 pm. They had from now on 12 hours to rescue Dom. Orlando hadn’t sent another message. They were unaware of what was going to happen.
Billy waited in front of a little speed boat. He was ready, he turned up. Where was Orlando? The second that thought passed through his mind three dark figures appeared from behind him. But none of them was Orlando.
“You must be Billy. Are you alone?”, one of them asked.
Billy nodded and opened his mouth to speak and ask where Orlando was but he was interrupted.
“Don’t waste your valuable energy.”
Billy felt something hard hit him on the back of his head and saw, heard and talked no more.
