Chapter 7

A/N: This is the last chapter, it was a bit rushed I will admit. A lot of this chapter was t/i by the 1979 version (again)

*************

Meanwhile Gelir’s sisters finally arrived at Lothlorien upon the day of Merry and Pippin’s wedding. The Lady Galadriel was waiting for them.

‘Vedui young Mermaids’ she greeted them.

‘Are you the Lady Galadriel’ asked Alyssa.

‘I am, and I must say you all have the gracefulness of your Mother’

‘Forgive me my Lady, but do you know what has become of our sister, Gelir’

‘She dwells in the land of Hobbits my child, the most kind hearted creatures upon Middle-earth and her heart belongs to them now’

‘But how is that possible’ Arnella questioned.

‘She is now in the form of a Hobbit and she can never return home’

The mermaids’ hearts sank at this.

‘Is she happy’ Akasha asked.

‘Happiness is a difficult thing to find in these times, would you look into the mirror young ones’

‘The mirror’

‘Yes, in it you may yet hope to find some of your answers’

The mermaids nodded.

Galadriel raised her hands and the mirror, already filled with the seeing water floated in the air and came to rest upon the river water in front of the sisters.

They circled around it and looked in.

In the mirror they witnessed all the happy times that Gelir had with Merry, but then the images of her and Merry making love struck fear into their hearts. As if it could not be made any worse they then saw the wedding kiss of Merry and Pippin.

Alyssa looked up at Galadriel in shock

‘But what does all this mean’

‘’Your sister has dabbled in old magics, dark magics, there was a price to pay and now she shall pay it.

‘What price’ Amina yelled.

‘At dawn tomorrow she shall turn into foam upon the sea waves’

‘No, no please you must do something to help her’ Alyssa begged.

‘I am sorry my dears but there is nothing I can do’ Galadriel told them

‘Please’ Akasha pleaded.

‘As I told your sister, as much as it is not my will, nothing comes without a price’

‘We will give you anything’ Alyssa declared.

‘Very well, I shall help you, but not only shall you pay a price, but Gelir shall have to pay one also’

‘If it saves her, then we will take it’ Alyssa insisted.

‘So be it, you must give me your long golden hair’

‘Done’

********************

That night celebration was great in the Green Dragon inn. Everyone was Merry with laughter, except for Merry and Gelir. Merry put on a front, pretending to enjoy himself, inside his heart was bleeding for his love.

Gelir had been given permission to attend the wedding by Esmarelda. She knew the old Hobbit wanted to ‘rub her nose in it’ but she went for Merry’s sake. She stood by the window, looking up at the sky till she could take it no longer. She left the Inn and ran down to the river.

There she sat, running her fingers through the clear waters that would claim her life. She missed her Father and sisters terribly and wished she could see them one last time, but above all else, she wised she could tell Merry that she loved him.

//‘The wedding ceremony is over. It will soon be dawn. The fist ray of sunlight shall bring my death’//

Suddenly, she heard noises nearby, as if under the water. Then out of the clear liquid rose her sisters. Gelir was shocked beyond thought.

‘Gelir it’s us, we’ve come to help you’ Alyssa told her

Gelir raised her hands and ran them through her hair.

‘We gave our hair to the Lady Galadriel in exchange for a magic dagger’ Arnella explained.

Alyssa produced the dagger and threw it to Nessa.

‘You must thrust that dagger into the Hobbit’s heart’ Akasha said.

‘And when his blood sprinkles your feet, you will be come a mermaid again’ Alyssa assured her.

Gelir shock her head.

‘Come back to us Gelir, Father misses you so much’ Amina pleaded

‘And be quick’ Alyssa warned’ the sun will rise soon. And the bid bid me tell you, that when you most desire it, that was taken shall be returned.’

The mermaids turned to swim off.

‘Well be waiting for you’ echoed in the air as they disappeared from sight.

**********************

Gelir lost count of the hours that she sat by the river thinking, then eventually she rose and walked back to Brandy Hall.

Merry and Pippin were asleep in their bed. Gelir walked up close to Merry and looked upon his face. He was sleeping peacefully.

Gelir raised the blade over her head, her hands shaking and her heart pounding fiercely. She went to strike but pulled back. Trembling with fear she raised the blade again, but when she went to strike she pulled back again and collapsed to her knees.

//‘I can’t, I can’t do it’//

She stood up and placed a kiss on Merry’s forehead before leaving Brandy Hall and heading back to the river. This time she stood upon the ferry with the knife in her hands.

//‘Yes, it’s the only way. I must return to the sea, where I was born, where I belong. Only through my death will I keep my love for Merry pure and true and perhaps when I have turned to sea foam, foam upon the waves, I may yet find a way to be of service to him and to others. I want to be with him and around him always, even if it is in the form of a clear foam’//

Tears welled up in her eyes, but she stopped shaking.

//‘Goodbye Father and my dear sisters, I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you tonight. Goodbye Meriadoc Brandybuck, I hope you may find happiness’//

With that Gelir threw the knife into the sea.

*********************

At Brandy Hall, Merry awoke with a start, he didn’t know what it was, but he sensed that something was seriously wrong. He ran from his bed and down to the ferry where he found Gelir standing there.

Like magic his memory of the night he was saved came flooding bto hto him.

‘It was you’ he said.

Gelir could not face him; she could not bear to see the pain upon his face.

Then something hit her like a wave of lightening and the words she had so longed to say came out of her mouth.

‘I love you Merry’

Merry was frozen with shock, everything fell into place, he looked as the sun rose over the treetops and when he looked back Gelir jumped from the ferry into the water.

‘NO!!!’

Merry ran to the edge of the ferry, but she was gone.

He felt as though his heart had been ripped from his chest, he got up and ran. He didn’t care where he was going, he just ran, and he never returned to Brandy Hall.

Gelir’s spirit was lifted from to waters and taken to a higher plane of life, where she watched over Merry to the end of his days and they were finally reunited together in eternal happiness.

THE END – YAYYYY I’VE FINISHED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
