Escalations
Chapter six Escalations
Three days later…
Rumil grinned at his brother. “And where, may I ask, are you off to?”
Orophin shook his head. “You know darn well I am meeting Elrond for another walk.”
Rumil nodded. “Aye, the sixth, give or take one.”
He looked at Haldir. “I wonder, toron, our brother has been on six walks with the needy lord and is yet to come near the elf’s member. Did we not teach him the basics?”
Haldir nodded solemnly. “We did. I know not why he isn’t making a move.”
Orophin ignored him and continued combing his hair. “I am not seducing him, I am courting him. How else will he know I am for real?”
Rumil grinned. “By touching you, off course.”
Orophin shook his head and threw his brush his way. “I’m off.”
Haldir smiled warmly. “Good luck. And no embarrassing stories of your childhood.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond smiled at Erestor and coughed to announce his presence.
Erestor nodded, but didn’t stop combing his hair.
Elrond stepped inside. “How are you doing?”
Erestor shrugged. “As usual. Why?”
Elrond sighed, not understanding the sudden hostility Erestor emanated. “Because I care about you, or have you forgotten? I still think Legolas should know.” He jumped back when Erestor glared at him. He shook his head. “Maybe I should go?”
Erestor nodded. “Maybe that’s best.”
His eyes hardened when Elrond closed the door. /I thought you were my best friend, Elrond, and yet you keep this from me. When are you telling me you plan not to return? When it’s time to leave? And why are you not telling me?/
He lowered his head. /I cannot leave Imladris, nor do I wish to. And the twins are going to need my guidance. I do hope Glorfindel will return or it will be too difficult to maintain this high level of safety for long./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas grinned at the curses behind him.
“Gimli, I am fine. I can take care of myself. Nothing’s happened for two days now. Please, grant me some freedom.”
Gimli muttered some more but decided to stop the tailing, knowing he could never outrun the elf. “You better be heavily armed, laddy.”
Legolas’ laugh filled the trees, informing Gimli he’s been looking in the wrong direction. “Aye, Gimli, my friend, I am. Should I need your axe, I’ll let you know.”
He jumped and dashed off, needing to let everything out his system.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Orophin smiled when he entered the garden path and saw Elrond already waiting. He bowed and smiled. “A good day, my lord.”
Elrond smiled warmly and signalled for the other to come walk beside him. “You know why we are here, do you not, Orophin?”
Orophin nodded. “Aye. To decide our future, my lord.”
Elrond nodded. “What do you think?”
Orophin smiled warmly. “My brothers and I will follow Lord Celeborn to your realm, my lord.”
Elrond smiled warmly but stopped himself from waving away the title. He gave up on that a while ago. “It will no longer be my realm, Orophin. I will sail for Valinor.”
Orophin stood still and gasped, looking stricken. “You are?”
Elrond nodded. “Aye. At first I considered Ithilien, but since everybody else yearns for Imladris, I am left no choice in the matter. I shall sail.”
They continued the walk but Elrond noticed the Galadrhim had turned silent and was no longer responding to his questions. He stopped and grabbed his elbow. “Orophin, is something wrong?”
He was unprepared for the outburst that followed.
His eyes widened in disbelief as Orophin shouted at him, scolding him in a way that would make even Gimli blush. He stood there and gaped like a fish, blinking when the warrior turned and ran away.
Elrond could see he had been about to slap him at that moment and that turning and running had been the only way to shimshimself. He could make no sense of Orophin’s behaviour. /Is he stressed?/ He sighed, shrugged and returned to the palace, arriving there just in time to hear Erestor’s heart-pitched scream.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir and Elladan grinned at their brother’s pacing. “He’s not coming back any sooner just because you are pacing, Aragorn.”
Aragorn nodded and stopped abruptly. “I know, I know, it’s just…” “The elf’s too stubborn for his own good.” Gimli finished. “And we just don’t want him to die on us again Ara Aragorn flared round and glared at him.
The twins looked at them in disbelief before they looked at each other. `I thought ata and Erestor had started too soon.`
`I know, Ro. Me too. But apparently he had died then.`
Elrohir bit his lip. `Shall we tell them?` He smiled at Elladan’s outraged face. `Remember, we only promised not to tell Legolas.`
Elladan nodded and was about to open his mouth and address the other two when Erestor’s scream filled the building.
The four of them rushed out and up the stairs, though the twins grinned at the stumbling elves they passed, all trying to reach the origin first.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas jumped down and rested his back against the tree and sighed contentedly. He felt happy and free for the first time in a long while.
After a few moments of utter bliss his eyes widened in horror as he felt his ‘illness’ return. His breath forced from his body he needed to hold on to the tree for support as he started swaying at the same time.
Suddenly he saw dark shapes coming toward him, but he was unable to draw his dagger; his attempt only a poor performance.
Before he is fully well aware of everything he collapsed on the ground and gasped, recognizing the orcs before him. /Aiya, Elbereth save me./
He forced his body to obey and fight and actually managed to keep them at bay for a while.
His mind and heart were filled with fear, knowing he can be easily defeated now. /What was I thinking? I need protection. But I am all alone./
About to go down his eyes filled with tears, fully understanding this could mean his death. Now that he has to face it his heart and mind can only think one thing. /Erestor. Forgive me./
He blacked out when an orc hits him from behind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor’s face was filled with worry and he sighed relieved when the twins burst into his room, instantly followed by Aragorn and the Dwarf.
He grabbed Elladan’s clothes. “Legols tas taken. Orcs. Hurry.” He panted and reached for his own outer robe. “We’ve little time.”
Aragorn and Gimli frowned at the words, but the twins instantly understood and acted accordingly.
Elladan turned and addressed the os. “s. “Arm up. Gimli, you are done swifter than we are, alert the others. Top speed.”
Gimli nodded and cursed the elf’s stubbornness.
Aragorn sighed. He understood Gimli’s guilt. He grasped his shoulder. “Don’t blame yourself. You wouldn’t have been able to keep up with him or to track him. Just help us free him.”
Gimli nodded and ran away, faster than an elf could have done.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond ran inside and sighed relieved when he saw Thranduil. “Man nas?”
Thranduil shrugged. He had no idea. “All I know is that it’s Erestor. But what?”
About to brush past the Woodland king Elrond halted, seeing a flustered Gimli rush down the stairs. The Dwarf looked pleased to see him. “Lord Elrond.”
He now realised Thranduil was standing there as well and made a clumsy bow. He swallowed, not sure how to bring it. “We need an army. Orcs have taken laddy.”
Thranduil frowned, unsure what the Dwarf meant, but Elrond immediately understood. Seeing Glorfindel nearby he raised his e. “e. “Glorfindel! Arm yourself and gather a large group.”
Glorfindel nodded and ran off.
Thranduil gasped when he realised what was happening. “I’ll guide you myself.” His voice promised wrath to the orcs. He sighed. “I only hope he didn’t leave too difficult a trail.” He frowned when Elrond uttered a curse and sprang forward.
“Where do you think you are going?”
Elladan shrugged and looked apologetic. “He’s coming with us, ata, and you know why.” His eyes were daring and Elrond gasped, understanding. His eyes were filled with fear and Erestor smiled.
“I feel him still, Elrond. He was near some old trees and one of them looked like a statue.”
Thranduil’s eyes widened but he smiled. “Are you sure? For then I know the place. Come on, we ride.”
He grabbed Elrond’s shoulder. “You stay and aid Celeborn.” He shook his head at Elrond’s look. “Nay, Aragorn and the twins are with me and between them and me there’s enough knowledge of healing.” He turned and marched away.
