Safety

It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages" - Nietzsche

Legolas did not sleep that night – his mind kept turning over the events of the previous evening. He still couldn’t logically move from Haldir to The Ring but it made him more determined that ever to find out if she and the March Warden were having an affair.

He watched her sleep, her loose hair fanning out behind her and glinting bronze in the rising glow of the sun. She had murmured soft words in the night making him wonder, not for the first time, if she would make those same sounds in the heat of passion.

Annowe soon awakened fully, stretching like a cat and groaning with pleasure as her stiff muscles loosened up. He couldn’t help but smile at her. He was waking up every day next to her and they still had one more moon cycle before they would be back in Rivendell. That would be plenty of time for him to find out what he wanted to know.

They started off again walking southwest toward the Misty Mountains, Annowe following Legolas and admiring the now familiar view of his backside as they made their way over the gentle hills.

When the sun reached midday, they stopped for lembas and water. They sat and ate in silence until Annowe decided that Legolas should pay for his tormenting of her the previous evening. So she tossed a piece of the bread at him. It hit him squarely on the side of the head and she giggled when he scowled at her but he did not retaliate. She wondered if he were so angry with her that he would no longer play and sighed dejectedly.

“You lead this time,” the elf requested as they prepared to continue their journey.

She nodded and they set off once again, this time with Annowe in the lead and Legolas watching the gentle sway of her hips as she walked. He realized instantly why she had wanted to follow him – she had been watching his gait the entire time! He grinned at the thought and hoped he had given her a good show.

Her pace was much slower than his but he did not mind. He found her girlish saunter charming if distracting. Watching her walk only increased his attraction to her and he tried not to stare.

Several times she stopped abruptly causing him to almost run into her. Each time she would smile up at him innocently until he finally realized that she was playing with him again. He had been so distracted by thoughts of her and Haldir that he had forgotten the most important point of the entire equation – he was here with her and Haldir was not!

The next time she stopped, he purposefully bumped into her nearly knocking her over.

“Watch it!” She warned him with a grin.

He laughed, glad to be in relatively safe territory with her for now.

They continued their bumping game throughout the rest of the day, both of them enjoying the sport and the chance to be close to each other without straying into dangerous territory.

The sun had long since set when Annowe stopped one last time, taking a quick step back to purposefully bump into Legolas. This time he grabbed her about the waist and lifted her off her feet, causing her to squeal in alarm and struggle against him. He squeezed her tightly and chuckled in her ear, relishing the feel of her small body squirming against him.

When he sat her back down, she was grinning broadly and he grinned back at her. It didn’t seem to matter anymore about Haldir. The March Warden was far away, leaving him completely alone with Annowe.

He built a small fire and the two of them sat in a relaxed silence as they watched the flames. He stole a quick glance at her and found that she was scrutinizing him closely. He shifted uneasily. Would she bring up the previous evening’s questioning? He wondered.

Silently, she stood up and rummaged through her pack until she found her hairbrush then came to sit down behind him.

“Do you mind?” She asked and held the brush out so he could see it.

This was more serious than he had imagined. Whatever was bothering her must be very serious indeed.

“You want to brush my hair?” He asked slowly, turning slightly to see her.

“Yes. Do you mind?” She repeated.

He sighed. “No.” Not that he had much choice in the matter.

Carefully, she took out his braids, using her fingers to comb through them. He closed his eyes and tried not to think about her hands running through his hair or her proximity to him. She seemed determined to tempt him beyond even what an elf could bear, he was sure of it.

As she began to comb his hair, he felt himself relax under her gentle touch and sighed. He feared that her touch would only arouse him further but oddly it did not. The rhythm of first the brush then her hand smoothing his hair soothed him in a way he had not known since he was an elfling.

She re-braided his hair then moved to her own blanket to watch him for several moments.

“Thank you,” he murmured drowsily.

She smiled at him. “You are welcome. Now get some sleep!”

With a smile he lay down obediently, now completely relaxed and content that she was no longer angry with him.

Annowe sighed with relief. Things were getting back to normal between them and she determined that no matter what happened, she would not yield to the temptation he presented.
