Tári could feel herself being roused. A hand gently shook her shoulder, pulling her from a dark place she felt comfortable in. When her eyes fluttered open, every memory came flooding back to her.
She closed her eyes again and clasped a palm over her face, trying to shield herselom mom more than just the dim light pouring through the window. "Tári," said Haldir, releasing her shoulder, "You must get up."
"Why?" she asked groggily, happy to remain in her bed for the rest of eternity. She did not want to know what Haldir had to say. She did not care.
"Your father arrives."
The hand slipped from her face as she looked up at the Marchwarden. A frown covered her features as mixed emotions invaded her body. Fear, hope, worry, joy...they all hit her at once. "When?" she asked, sitting up.
"They will be here within the hour. I've laid out a dress for you. You should wash." Haldir looked nervous, she noticed, as she stood and made her way to the washroom.
"Will you wait for me?" she asked, turning at the door.
He seemed surprised she would ask, but nodded quickly. "Of course."
Closing the door, she exhaled heavily and set out to wash and dress, avoiding the mirror as much as possible. When she did look to fix her hair, she groaned at how exhausted she looked. Her father would notice.
Tári took her time preparing, but soon she was ready to leave. Taking a few deep, calming breaths, she gathered her courage and opened the door, concentrating on the happiness she felt that her father was finally home. She smiled weakly at Haldir, who immediately held out his arm for her to take.
As they exited her rooms, her smile became more sincere. In the early evening light, the people of Mirkwood had filled the forest with banners and lit candles, heralding the arrival of their leader. Songs were being sung and it filled her with hope. The mood of Mirkwood had not been this merry in many years.
Haldir and Tári stood at the edge of a bridge that led from the dense forest to a clearing where the elves waited to greet the party. Holding tight to the Marchwarden, she darted her eyes around, looking for her brother. When she spotted him heading towards them, she clenched her jaw tightly.
"Haldir, Tári," he said when he approached, "You look lovely, sister."
Her brother's eyes betrayed his irritation that she was with Haldir. Saying nothing, she averted her eyes, watching thildhildren playing with lighted phials instead.
"Have you heard anything, Legolas?" asked Haldir, "When will they be arriving?"
Tearing his eyes from his sister, Legolas clasped his hands behind his back and took his place beside her. "Quite soon," he said, looking at the Marchwarden, "Within minutes, I would guess."
He was right. They waited in silence until the footsteps of horses could be heard along the bridge. Legolas' eyes were trained upon Tári until then, and she was relieved when he looked up to the approaching company. When her father came into view, she smiled.
Thoughts of Legolas vanished when Thranduil dismounted his horse and came towards her. "Tári!" he greeted, accepting a strong hug from her, "My lovely daughter. I have missed you."
"I missed you, ada," she breathed, holding him tight. Shokedoked up at the others and saw an unfamiliar dark-haired elf watching them. Quickly she averted her eyes and closed them. Her Her father laughed softly. "My dear, you will crush me with your strength." Blushing and pulling back, she looked up at him and for the first time noticed he did not appear genuinely happy. His expression held a measure of tension, and she was sure she realized why. His voice turned quiet. "Have you been informed?"
"Yes." Her eyes could not hide her unhappiness.
Thranduil sighed heavily and kissed her on the forehead. "I will speak to you about it later."
She nodded, and it was then he turned to Legolas. Tári stepped back as they embraced, and she immediately felt sick. "Father, your arrival is most welcome," he said, pulling back.
Thranduil's eyes grazed over the crowd and the forest around them. "Yes, I have missed home."
"There are some things we need to discuss." Tári's eyerkeerked up to Legolas, whose expression had turned quiet sombre.
Their father seemed to know what he spoke of. "Later," he said quietly.
Legolas' face turned dark. "I think we should speak now."
Tári became worried, knitting her brows at the tone her brother had taken. Glancing up at Haldir showed her that she was not the only one who grew concerned. "Ada," she said, pulling her father's attention away from his son, "Perhaps I should meet with Lord Elrond now."
His eyes were gray with doubt. "Wait until tomorrow, Tári."
"I've waited too long already. I need to talk about this." She kept her eyes upon her father, keenly aware of the angry glare Legolas gifted her with. She knew she needed to speak with Elrond and her father now, before her brother could be given the opportunity to cause trouble.
Sighing, Thranduil nodded and motioned to the dark-haired elf Tári had seen earlier. Taking a deep breath she waited as he approached. "My dear, this is Lord Elrond Halfelven of Imladris. Elrond, this is my daughter, Tári and my son, Legolas."
She bowed her head respectfully, as did the lord. Legolas, however, remained still, looking up at Elrond with distaste. The raven-haired elf seemed to sense his hostility, but paid it no mind. "It is good to meet you, Tári. Your father has told me much about you. It would greatly relieve me if we were to speak of this arrangement tonight, for I am certain you have many questions and concerns."
"I do," she said, nodding. "Ada, could just the three of us go to the Meeting Hall and talk about this?"
Legolas' eyes flashed. "Should I not be in on this as well?"
Thranduil frowned, clearly questioning his son's mood. "It will be discussed with you tomorrow, Legolas. For tonight, I believe your sister and Lord Elrond should be allowed to speak in private."
His eyes were angry, but Legolas said nothing. Taking a grateful breath, she turned away and followed her father as they headed into the city.
