Chapter 42 - Haldir's Heart Returns
Someone was shaking him, forcing his conciousness back to the World. Angrily, he resisted the pull that threatened his hold on the dreams that lately filled the void in his soul.
His eyes slowly focusing, Haldir turned his bright gaze to whoever it was had awakened him so. Not surprised, he saw it was Tamarcil, his First Commander. Should Haldir fail in his duty to rule Thalion Tirion, it would fall to Tamarcil to take the reins of government. He sighed as he arched a single eyebrow in what had become his famous trademark.
"What compels you to awaken me thus, Tamarcil of Avonea?" Haldir asked good naturedly. His voice had matured into a gentle, measured tone. His eyes, still the mirror of his soul, were now always kind and filled with a gentle humor. Yet, he could see something was indeed causing much agitation in the younger elf's heart. Haldir frowned and stood, reaching for the soft ice-blue shirt and leggings that lay draped over a small chair. These days he much preferred sleeping as uncovered as possible and really did not know its reason.
Dressing himself, but still barefoot, Haldir walked to a small basin where he splashed cool water on his face. Turning to Tamarcil who waited silently, Haldir unfolded a small towel and rubbed his face briskly.
"Well," his voice was muted by the towel, "what is it?" He turned to Tamarcil as he folded the towel and waited. Seeing conflict in Tamarcil's eyes, Haldir grew more curious. "Yet you command me to rise from the sweet realm of Lorien's dreams to your silence?" Haldir was growing impatient. "Speak, my friend. Naught of what you speak can be so terrible indeed that you cannot command your voice!" He left the towel next to the basin and came to stand before his old friend.
Tamarcil's eyes widened. Haldir frowned.
"Haldir, you'd best sit down." Tamarcil began, and dragged a chair closer to Haldir.
Haldir's brows furrowed more deeply, and he responded dryly, but not unkindly. "I have no need to sit, as I have just awakened." Haldir's eyes sparkled with a gentle rebuke.
Tamarcil ignored the barb. "Still, Haldir. It would be wise for you to sit while you hear the news I bear." Tamarcil placed both his hands on the back of the sturdy chair and nodded toward it.
Growing impatient, Haldir waved his hand and made to turn. "I have no time for this trifling, Commander."
But Tamarcil grasped Haldir's arm. Turning quickly, Haldir's intelligent eyes examined his old friend's face. And to Haldir's complete amazement he saw Tamarcil's eyes flood with tears.
Alarmed now, Haldir came to stand before Tamarcil and searched the distressed face of the elf before him. "My friend?" Haldir whispered urgently, searching Tamarcil's face. "It is not Alariel?" Referring to Tamarcil's wife.
Tamarcil shook his head. "Nay, Haldir."
"Then, come, tell me, my friend, " urged Haldir in a soft voice. "What distresses you so?"
Tamarcil's troubled eyes met Haldir's and without flinching, his clear voice rang out. "Haldir, the Lady Eridani has been found."
Knowing his friend quite well, Tamarcil sighed and moved away from the chair.
Haldir's face expressionless and his eyes distant, he slowly lowered himself into the chair Tamarcil had ofd ead earlier. Tamarcil waited.
Yet Haldir said nothing, his mind too numb to react, his spirit neither accepting or rejecting the strange news. After endless minutes, Haldir spoke without looking at Tamarcil, his voice muted and toneless.
"Curious, unless I am very mistaken, I believe you said that the Lady Eridani has been found?"
Tamarcil nodded, worried eyes fixed on his friend. "Indeed she has, Haldir. On the Southern Uile."
Haldir snorted and tried to stand. He found his legs would not support him and he faltered. He sat again, still without raising his eyes to Tamarcil. "You do not know what you are saying." His voice was tired and without warmth.
Tamarcil remained silent.
"Leave me now, my friend," Haldir finally said. "There are many duties ahead for today. I shall meet with you in a short while. For now I must be with my own thoughts." Haldir sat back and closed his eyes, taking a deep and ragged breath.
Tamarcil hesitated, but bowed and left the room.
