Chapter 8
Anna hurried along the pathway, glancing behind her every few feet to make sure she was not followed. She knew Orophin would be furious with her for this. Anna had just turned to round a corner when she was halted abruptly by a hand on her arm.
“Is it I that you seek, Anna?”
Anna started to see Lea in front of her. Lea’s smile was contemptuous. Anna was no naive maiden. She knew this Rivendell elf was nothing but trouble. She returned Lea’s gaze. Anna was only an inch or so shorter than Lea. She straightened herself, jutted her chin, and handed Lea the letter from Mina.
Lea seemed amused by Anna’s attempts at bravery, but Anna held her ground. Lea opened the letter and began reading. The smile fell instantly. Anna smirked when Lea looked at her. Lea’s eyes went cold and Anna noticed the twitch in her jaw. Anna gave her a mock bow and turned to leave.
Lea chuckled openly at Anna’s gasp. She leaned into the Mirkwood elf’s ear, “Not so brave now are you, Anna?” Lea turned and slipped away as silently as she came.
Anna stared wide-eyed at Orophin and Haldir. Little did she know, but Rumil had seen her leave Mina on the archery field after over hearing their conversation. Anna thought to simply turn and walk away, but the cold voice of her beloved stopped her, “Do not be foolish Anna. You know I will come after you.”
Orophin was beside her before she could take a breath and grabbed her roughly to him. He began dragging her back in the direction of their shared talan. Haldir walked silently behind them and had the decency to stay far enough behind to spare her dignity as his brother berated her.
Anna was frightened but she was angry at being treated this way. She tried to jerk away from him, “Orophin, release me at once! You are hurting me!”
He said nothing and continued to pull her. “Orophin let go of me! Who do you think you are? You are not my keeper! Let go of me this instant!” Her mouth snapped shut as soon as he turned to look at her. She involuntarily shrank away, as much as his grip would allow. His eyes held a fury she had only seen once before. In Haldir’s eyes, the day he had returned to find Mina had been spending time with Lea.
Orophin’s voice was a low, forced hiss through clenched teeth, “Who do I think I am? Do you dare say this to me? I am your keeper! You belong to me Anna. I keep what is mine at all times. Especially when one acts as brazenly foolish as you! I did not expect something so utterly stupid from you Anna! I believed you to have more sense, but now I know I must keep you with me at all times, else you will get yourself into terrible trouble.”
Anna’s eyes were now slit and her nostrils flared with anger, “How dare you speak to me in such a manner! I have done noth….”
“You have acted like a little fool!” He snapped, shaking her roughly. “I asked you, nay, pleaded with you to stay away from Lea. You refused to listen to me. You will not make that mistake again.” He began dragging her again through the city streets. The few elves they passed looked away trying to spare her more humiliation.
Once at the talan, he shoved her roughly inside. She turned to face him, so frightened she felt a wave of nausea within her throat, but she forced it aside. Haldir entered behind Orophin, quietly shutting the door. Both males stood over her and she stubbornly held her ground. Haldir was very impressed by her inner strength for he knew how scared she was. Orophin too was impressed, though he hid it from her.
Haldir stepped to her and spoke calmly and very gy, “y, “Why did you go to Lea, Anna? We have warned you she is a danger to all she crosses paths with. She would hurt you.”
Anna swallowed hard and though she was afraid, her loyalty to Mina was fiercely strong. “I refuse to answer.”
Haldir’s lip quirked, “You have given me my answer Anna, for I know of only one you would risk mine and my brother’s anger for. You show great loyalty and friendship to my Mina. I am thankful for your friendship to her.”
Haldir turned to Orophin who was seething with rage. Haldir knew the true reason for Orophin’s extreme fear for Anna. He had already lost one to Lea’s cruelty and treason.
Haldir laid a hand on his arm, “Do not be too angry with her Orophin. She is a steadfast friend. Yes she is foolish and stubborn…” His gaze rested on Anna once more, “And deserves her bottom blistered most thoroughly, as does another Mirkwood maiden I know well, but she loves her Princess and would follow blindly I think, even to the sulfur pits of Mordor.”
Orophin breathed deeply, willing his anger to subside, but not being able to push his fear aside. He looked intently at Anna’s trembling form, “You are right brother. And this is partly my fault, for though I told Anna part of the reason I detest Lea, I did not tell her all.”
He stepped forward and took Anna in his arms, “I will not be too harsh with her Haldir, but she had disobeyed me and I will punish her for it.”
Anna stiffened in his arms and did not see the wink Orophin gave Haldir as he turned to leave. Both brothers grinned widely at one another as Haldir shut the door behind him.

By the time Haldir found Mina among the archers, much of his anger had dissipated. Especially when her face lit into such a beautiful smile and he knew the smile was for him. She ran to him and jumped in his arms, kissing him fully on his lips in welcome. When he sat her down, she pulled him to where she had been firing at targets. She was so proud of herself as she hit all but three out of the twenty shots she had taken. Legolas had been most impressed and had even softened his view of his sister wielding a weapon.
Haldir watched her as she now showed her brother the swordplay she had learned. She was not very good with a sword. She was in fact, less than mediocre, but she had a good laugh at herself in the process. The difficulty was the sword was too heavy for her and Rumil had yet to make her a smaller and lighter one to practice with. Legolas was impressed she could even lift its great weight.
Haldir decided that moment he would tell Mina the truth. He could not expect her to truly heed his warnings when he was not completely honest with her. He realized he was treating her exactly as her father and brother treated her as they had stifled her during her childhood. They desperately tried to protect her from the world, but in doing so, also made her too dependent on others. He would speak to her brother later about teaching her to defend herself from harm.

Two days later, Thranduil finally arrived within Caras Galadhon with his aid and several wardens. Mina had been overjoyed to see her father and had tears of joy spilling down her cheeks. Celeborn and Galadriel were most amused to greet the King of Mirkwood with a slight fair-haired maid hanging from his neck.
Just as she had done her brother, Mina led her father through the golden city, babbling non-stop on the things she had seen, done, and learned.
She did not know Legolas and her father had been told how she had been gravely injured upon reaching the city. Thranduil had been furious she was anywhere near a battle, while Legolas was beaming with pride at his sister’s bravery. Thranduil was secretly very proud also underneath his fear.
To everyone’s surprise, Thranduil seemed quite impressed with his daughter’s newly found skill with a bow though Rumil talked her out of showing him her sword skills.
News of the upcoming wedding of the March Warden to the MirkwPrinPrincess was on the lips of every Lorien elf. Many Lorien maids were seen with tear filled eyes at the thought of losing the most sought after bachelor of the Golden Wood.
There was much excitement and joy of the news as well. Wedding plans were instantly made upon Thranduil’s arrival. The wedding would of course take place in Caras Galadhon in only three days time.
The Lady had bid her carpenters and architects to build a special canopy under which the couple would be married. Mina’s favorite flowers of roses and violets were being brought into the city by the dozens. Mina had drawn the pattern for her dress herself and had given it to Galadriel’s personal seamstresses.
Lorien craftsmen were charged to make binding rings for the couple and Rumil was busying himself writing several poems to adorn Mina with on her wedding day. A feast had been planned as well by the Lord and Lady.
Lea had not been seen since the day Anna had given her the note saying Mina would not meet her after all. Haldir had told several of the King’s sentinels to be on guard for her. As of yet, no one had seen her. And no one would see her, until it was too late.
