Chapter Six
// Elladan woke from his draught induced sleep to find Legolas asleep in the chair by his bed. From the looks of it, he hadn’t bothered to bathe or change clothes since his arrival. His traveling clothes were still dusty from the road, but the prince, himself, was immaculate and a welcomed sight.
Since his injury, two days ago, in a scuffle with outlaws, Elladan had been restricted to his bed to heal. He had argued about the confinement, but in the end hurt too badly to really put up a fight. His shoulder hurt less, now, but he wouldn’t be wielding a sword anytime soon. When he moved to find a more comfortable position in the bed, Legolas turned his head and looked at him.
“I hope the brigand paid for his insolence,” the prince said, smiling at the twin.
“Aye, he did, although too late to save me the injury,” he replied, giving his friend a small smile. “When did you arrive?”
“Earlier today, never has the vale been a more welcome sight. We were hampered by heavy rains over the mountains and I was afraid I would have a mutiny on my hands. There were murmurs of one, I am sure.” Legolas leaned forward in the chair. “When Elrohir told me of your injury, I washed up and came here. I wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“I am fine and it is good that you are here, you can entertain me while I am stuck in this bed,” Elladan said in reply.
“I will do my utmost to make sure you are never bored, after all, what are friends for,” Legolas promised, laughing. “If I remember right, you are a horrible patient.”
“Not if I have the right elf looking after me.” //
“I always catch you daydreaming,” a voice said, pulling Elladan from his thoughts.
He turned to see the king of Mirkwood looking at him with a slight grin on his face. “It is a state I find myself in more often than not, lately,” he said in reply.
“May I,” the king asked, indicating the seat next to him on the bench.
“Of course, I forget my manners,” the twin said, blushing.
“You are distracted,” Thranduil reasoned. “A good reason to forget one’s manners. I see you are wearing the necklace Legolas gave you.”
Elladan’s hand automatically grabbed the pendant and nodded his head.
“I cannot pretend to know what the necklace signifies, he was never one to share the more intimate details of his life with me,” the king said. “I can, however, say that he would be glad to know that you are wearing it and that it means something to you.”
“It means more to me than anything else,” he said, sadly. “I miss him, my lord.”
“I miss him, too,” Thranduil said, patting Elladan on the shoulder. “You will be reunited with him. Am I right in guessing you love my son?”
“I do, I have for a long time, I just didn’t think…” he started to reply, but was interrupted.
“Don’t tell me, tell him. When you see him again, let it be the first words out of your mouth,” the king advised, standing..
“How long will must I wait,” Elladan asked.
“I do not know, pen neth,” he said, beginning to walk away.
The twin watched him until he could no longer see him and let out a heart wrenching sigh.

“Do you yield,” Elrohir asked with his sword pointed at his opponent’s neck.
“Aye,” the warrior replied, dropping his sword to the ground.
“You were slow today, Elladan,” he said, giving his twin a worried look.
“I am just tired, brother,” the oldest said. “I have not been sleeping well, I have dreams that wake me and I can’t always go back to sleep.”
“You are going to keep on until your love for him kills you,” Elrohir growled. “I curse the day we met him and that he ever became our friend.”
“Elrohir! Listen to what you are saying, he was our best friend and you should not speak of the dead that way,” Elladan replied, glaring at his brother. “I love him.”
“If I had known what his friendship would do to you, I would have gladly given it up,” he said, growing more angry. “He is taking you away from me, from all of us and you are letting him.”
Elladan grabbed him by the shirt and pushed him against a tree. “Do you think I asked for this,” he hissed, his face close to his brother’s. “Do you think I enjoy laying awake at night with memories of him assaulting me? I have tried to forget him, sweet Eru, I have tried. He is always there, always and I cannot push him away.” He was near tears when he let go of Elrohir and turned away.
“He is killing you, Elladan,” he said, tears coursing down his cheeks.
“I know.”
