Chapter 8
The next day, crutches in hand, Elijah escorted me out of the hospital. We'd spent the morning playing cards, watching TV...And discussing different music styles we liked. I'd finally gotten over the fact that what I thought was real, never happened. And I was content to meet the real Elijah...finding him to be very similar to the one I had imagined. We made a quick stop at my house, picking up a small suitcase. Elijah said that he wanted to take me shopping in NZ...as I needed to get a new wardrobe in honor of my first trip out of the United States. I told him it was unnecessary, but he wouldn't allow me to argue. He knew women liked to shop...and wanted to make me happy. 'she fell in love with a dream Elijah...maybe she can fall in love with the real Elijah' he thought as he helped me into the taxi that would take us to the airport. It was going to be a long flight, and they'd made sure they'd brought stuff to keep themselves occupied. Elijah packed a few of his favorite movies, and a few that I'd mentioned never seen, but wanted too. He had a portable DVD player, and planned to introduce me to what he considered, the classics of all time. I had also noticed him picking up a few of my own DVD's from my shelf...and grinned when I saw The Good Son in the pile.
When we finally got to the airport, we were ushered into the back hallways. More for Elijah's safety than my ability to weave through the crowds on crutches. When we got to a certain point I was sent a wheel chair, and Elijah pushed me to the departure gate. We would get on last, to give everyone time to get settled. I was drowsy from the medications I had been put on, and leaned against his shoulder after we took off. He smiled and took my hand.

I felt a tickling on my nose. I smiled and swatted at the offending hand before closing my eyes again. I heard Elijah smile and sigh...but once again felt his hand brush my face. I stayed still...just to see what he was going to do. He seemed to realize what I was doing, and I heard him chuckle quietly. I figured he was going to leave me be, but I suddenly felt his lips brush my cheek...then my nose...then I felt them softly touch my own lips. I gasped and rose up. "What was that for?" I laughed, but felt my cheeks begin to blush.
"Well I wanted to wake you...and thought maybe that would be a more pleasant way then just poking your shoulder." He grinned and leaned in close to me. "Don't think for one minute that you didn't like my method."
"Well I can't say it was the worst experience in my life." I smiled coyly. "But...I won't hold that against you dearie." I patted his cheek and lay my head back down on his shoulder. I could tell that he was shocked by my answer...so I smiled. "I'll give you the opportunity to redeem yourself however...but not right now."
"Sarah?"
"Yes?" I didn't lift my head, but I tilted it so I could see his face.
"Did you really fall in love with me...in your dreams anyway?"
I sat up and turned so my back was to the side of the plane. I took a deep breath. "Well I suppose that this would come up eventually..." I looked at my watch...But realized that the time was going to be wrong. "How much longer until we land?"
"About seven hours or so."
"Okay...we have time then." I smiled and began to tell him what I thought had been real. He laughed at how accurate I had been in all of their reactions and personalities. And when I told him of his proposal in Venice he started to get teary eyed. I knew I was already shedding my own tears...and he pulled out a napkin for me.
"Damn...to have all of that happen...and to learn it didn't happen...I can't imagine what I would do." He took my hand in one, and placed the other on my cheek. Drawing our foreheads together he smiled. "But I'm glad I get the chance to redeem myself." He kissed my nose and lifted the armrest between us so he could wrap me in his arms around me into a hug. "Want to watch a movie?" I nodded and he got out the player and a DVD, putting on our headphones we held hands as we watched The Good Son together. It was amazing to see him so young on screen, and to turn and have his very adult face pressed to mine cheek to cheek.
I fell asleep in the middle of it I know...cause when I woke up again the player was shut off, and his eyes were closed. I smiled and kissed his cheek, before closing my own eyes again. My thoughts were of the man beside me, and how lucky I was...to have him both in dreams and real life.
