Hobbitnapped

Chapter 6

Hamson came running into the town square and made straight for the Sheriff. He told the Sheriff what he had heard and that he needed to get to Bad End immediately. Hamson then said he had to find the Doctor for Rosie. Unfortunately the town gossip had heard
the whole thing too. Maybeth was one to spread rumors about and she did not hesitate with this one. All she needed was Bag End--Frodo--Rosie--Doctor and she was off.

Sam was working his way through the market checking for fresh fruit when he passed a group of women. He smiled and shook his head. Eternal gossips these ones were. Then a few words caught his attention and his blood ran cold. “...Rosie Cotton was hurt...” He pushed his way through to Maybeth. “Here now! What’s this about Rosie?!” he demanded. Maybeth and the others just stared at Sam. They all knew how he felt about Rosie but they had never seen him act this way before. He had always been shy and reserved. Sam grabbed Maybeth’s shoulders and shook her. “Tell me!” Maybeth squared her shoulders and looked him straight in the eyes. “All I know is that your elder brother came tearing into town looking for the Sheriff. Said that there had been trouble up at Bag End and Rosie needed a doctor.” Sam let go and without a word took off toward home. He could not believe it. Trouble at Bag End? Rosie hurt? He spurred the pony to go as fast as he possibly could.

Sam pulled up in front of Bag End and pulled in the reins. He jumped off the cart before it stopped moving and ran full tilt up the front walk to Bag End. He almost knocked his Gaffer over in the doorway. “Samwise!” he bellowed. Sam stopped dead in his tracks, turned on his heel and started spitting out questions. “What happened? Where’s Rosie? Is she all right? Where’s Frodo?” Sam had to pause and take several deep breaths. “I will answer your questions as best I can son, but you must settle yourself first!” the Gaffer said. Sam nodded and let his Gaffer lead him out to the front stoop. The Sheriff and his deputies were going through Bag End and he did not want to be in the way. Once Sam had calmed himself down and got his breathing under control his Gaffer told him everything he knew so far. “Your mum is taking care of Rosie right now.” He finished.

“What of Frodo?” Sam asked. The Gaffer looked down at his feet. “It appears that he has been taken away against his will.” he said quietly. “Hobbitnapped?” Sam screamed jumping to his feet. “But who?....Why?” The Gaffer just shook his head. He stood and looked at his son. “Samwise. It doesn’t look good.”

“We have to find him! We have to go after him!” Sam cried in panic. “Sam!” The Gaffer grabbed hold of his son before he could take off. “We don’t even know which way they went or where they were heading. Lets just let the Sheriff and his men handle this.” Sam sat down and buried his head in his hands. His shoulders started to shake with grief. “I shouldn’t have left him alone!” he cried. I should have waited for Rosie to.....” He looked up “ROSIE!”

Sam was up and running before the Gaffer could stop him. Half way home Sam ran into Merry and Pippin. Merry grabbed Sam “Hey now! What’s the hurry?” Sam struggled to break away. “Frodo...Hobbitnapped...Rosie...needs....me!” Merry let go of Sam shocked. Merry and Pippin looked at each other, then up toward Bag End and took off after Sam.

Sam had barely reached the front door when he started yelling. “Rosie! Rosie your Sam’s here!” His mother stopped him in the hall. “Samwise! Calm your self. Rosies fine, she just had a scare is all.” Merry and Pippin had arrived just then. “Morning Mrs. Gamgee!” Merry said. “What’s going on?” Pippin asked. Bell showed the three of them into the parlor where Rosie was resting on the sofa. Sam went over to her and took her hand. “Now don’t you go upsetting her again!” The doctor warned coming around the corner from the Kitchen. “I just gave her something to help her sleep.” Sam looked up at him “Is she....…” The doctor patted Sam on the shoulder. “She’ll be just fine after a little rest.” The doctor said. Sam nodded and gave Rosies hand a little squeeze.

Sam motioned for Merry and Pippin to follow him into the kitchen as Bell saw the doctor out. “What’s this about Frodo?” Pippin asked as soon as they had reached the kitchen. Sam turned around and ran his fingers through his hair. “That’s just it! I don’t know what’s going on!” he said. “All my Gaffer told me was that by the looks of things at Bag End, Frodo was taken away against his will.” Sam looked at the shocked faces of his friends. “Taken?” Pippin asked. “Hobbitnapped?” cried Merry. Sam nodded his head. “Who would do that?” Merry asked. “I don’t know” Sam said. “We have to think! Have you two seen any strangers about since we got back!” Sam immediately saw the foolishness of this question as both Pippin and Merry nodded. “There have been many strange men about since we got back!” Merry stated. Sam sighed. “This is getting us nowhere!”

“What do you suggest we do?” asked Pippin. “Lets go see my Gaffer. He can tell us what the Sheriffs have found out.” After a quick check on Rosie, Sam and his two friends set of toward Bag End.
