Chapter 6
A/N: Merry's mother is a B.I.T.C.H. (I think we're a bit old for spelling games Willow - Giles BTVS)
************************
A few weeks later Gelir’s period stopped and her and Merry continued to make love in secret. Secret however did not stop Esmarelda’s suspicions from rising.
‘I think it’s about time we got rid of that lass’ she said to her husband Saradoc, who was sitting reading a book ‘Meriadoc is spending far too much time with her’
‘Hmm I agree my dear but there is nothing we can do about it’
She turned to Saradoc
‘Well that’s not exactly true’
‘And what do you mean by that’
‘Don’t you think it’s about time our Son got married’?
Saradoc looked up from his book.
‘You’re not suggesting we marry him of to the lass’
‘Of course I’m not’ Esmarelda yelled ‘I mean we shall have to arrange a marriage for Meriadoc’
‘He would never agree to it my dear, that lass has him wrapped around her little finger I dare say’
‘Then we must find someone that he would desire, if the lass were not around, and while were at it we have to make it so she is not around.’
‘What about young Peregrin’
‘My brother’s Son’ she asked
‘Yes, Meriadoc has always been close to him and he will be Thain of the Shire one day as our son will be Master of Buckland’
‘That is perfect, now what shall we do about the lass’
‘I do not know my dear’
‘Then I shall just have to think about something’
Later that night Esmarelda went and gathered a few valuable things from around the house, then she snuck into Gelir's room and stashed them under her bed.
Her wicked plot was done.
*************
The next day Gelir woke upon hearing a lot of hustle and bustle around the house. She got up and went to the door to find the servants all heading towards the main hall. Merry came and stood by the door.
‘Get dressed my sweet, my Mother wants to see all the servants in the main hall and she wants us there too’
Gelir quickly dressed and followed Merry to the main hall where his Mother and Father were sat up straight in their chairs. The servants were lined up in a row.
‘Mother what is going on’
‘My dear Meriadoc, I’m afraid we have a thief in this house’
‘Don’t be absurd Mother, who would want to steal from us’
‘Hush child, all I know is that a few valuable items from this house have gone missing and I want someone to confess to it’
Everyone was silent.
‘If one of you confesses and returns the stolen items then we shall hear no more about this' Saradoc added.
Still everyone was silent
‘Very well’ Esmarelda snapped ‘Then I shall search all of your rooms at once, including yours’ she said pointing to Gelir.
‘Mother there is no need to search her room, she is a guest, not a servant’
‘Everyone is under suspicion Meriadoc’
‘Very well then you can search my room as well’
Esmarelda was getting angry at her Son’s stubbornness but she reluctantly agreed, brushing past Gelir. Merry turned to the young lass.
‘You have nothing to hide do you my love, would you give my Mother permission to search your room’
Gelir nodded.
Her room was the first that Esmarelda searched and sure enough the stolen items were under her bed.
‘Ha’ she spat ‘she is a thief, you have been harboring a criminal my Son’
‘I don’t believe it Mother!' Merry screamed ‘Why did you check her room first and how did you know to look under her bed’
‘Co-incidence my boy, nothing more. I’ll have her in a cell for this’
‘Oh no you won’t’
‘You dare to speak to me in such a manner’
‘Yes I do, Gelir is not a thief, you put them there on purpose’
‘That’s it I’ve had enough’ Esmarelda pushed past Merry and grabbed Gelir by the arms. She dragged her down to the kitchen, with Merry protesting behind her. She threw the lass into the kitchen cupboard and locked it. She then retrieved the key and put it in her pocket.
‘Mother let her out now!’ Merry demanded.
‘No, and you my lad will go and get cleaned up and join your father and me in the drawing room. There is matter we need to discuss. No arguments and no disobeying’
With that she turned and stormed out of the room.
On the inside of the cupboard Gelir was sobbing and pounding on the door. In a rage Merry turned and kicked the door inflicting pain on his foot. He sat down by the door and began to sob himself.
‘I love you’ he whispered ‘I’ll be back soon I promise, you’ll be okay’
Merry got up and went to join his Mother and Father in the drawing room.
******************
Merry entered the room to find not only his Mother and Father sitting in their chairs, but also his cousin Pippin and his parents.
‘Pip, what are you doing here’
‘You parents asked us to come’ Pippin replied.
‘What for’
‘To discuss your marriage Meriadoc’ his mother informed him.
‘What marriage, to whom’ Merry exclaimed.
He looked at the various Hobbits in the room and then he realized.
‘Oh’
‘Well say something lad’ his Mother demanded.
‘Mother as much as I love my cousin, I fear my heart belongs to another’
‘I take it you mean that thief of a Hobbit lass’ Esmarelda yelled.
‘She is no thief Mother’ Merry argued.
‘Meriadoc my boy, the proof is in front of your eyes, what more do needneed’ Saradoc added.
‘Nothing you say will make me believe that Nesa stole those things’
‘Enough of this’ Esmarelda screamed ‘we are not here to waste talk on that thieving little retch, we are here to talk about your marriage’
‘There will be no marriage Mother’
‘It would do you well to comply with our wishes’ his father warned him.
‘And it would not do you not good to defy us’ his Mother declared.
‘What do you mean by that’
‘Your Mother means my lad, that the lass shall be run out of Buckland, or worse’
‘You can’t do that’ Merry screamed.
‘Listen to me Meriadoc’ his Mother protested ‘if you agree to this marriage then no harm will come to the lass’
‘And what if I refuse’
‘Then we shall see that proper justice is served and you know very well what that means’
With that, Pippin who had been sitting silently the whole time, leapt out of his chair.
‘With your leave I would like to speak with my cousin in private’ he said, dragging Merry out into the hall.
************************
Merry was furious, Pippin could see the rage building up in his eyes.
‘I don’t like this anymore than you do Merry’ he told him.
‘It has no repercussions on you Pippin, you have nothing at stake’
‘Merry listen to me, you heard them. You know what they’ll do it you refuse this marriage’
‘But there has to be some way out of this’ Merry insisted
‘Obviously you do not love me as much as you say you do’
‘Now Pippin that is unfair’ Merry said ‘you know this is not about you’
‘Merry, just for one second will you think will your head and not with your heart, you are not seeing the larger issue here’
Pippin took Merry’s hand.
‘If you agree to this marriage, then your family will see the lass all right and they won’t harm her’
Merry stared at him, his heart was aching and he was deeply worried about Gelir, locked up all alone in the kitchen cupboard.
‘Just think about it’ Pippin asked.
‘It seems I have no choice does it’
Merry stormed back into the room
‘All right I shall marry with Pippin, but I want nothing more to do with either of you once the wedding is over and you my dear parents have cursed your family name for eternity’
Merry turned and ran from the room, tears streaming down his face.
*********************
The next morning Pippin had a long talk with Esmarelda and persuaded her to let Gelir out of the cupboard. She reluctantly agreed and insisted on locking her in her room. She also declared that Merry was not to be let in to see her.
Later that day, behaving more as he would usually do, Pippin snatched the keys from the ‘guard’ that was set and sleeping by the door.
Merry made haste and went to her immediately. No sooner was he in the door; Gelir threw herself into his arms.
‘I am so sorry’ he sobbed to her ‘My Mother has arranged a marriage with my cousin’
Gelir stepped back, as innocent as her mind was, she knew Esmarelda’s plan, from planting the objects in her room to arranging Merry’s marriage. She knew now that her fate was sealed. She drew her finger to her neck and ran it across it.
‘No Gelir, I promise you they will not hurt you. My agreeing to this marriage has assured that, you will be looked after I promise’
//‘No Merry, you don’t understand, I’m going to die!!!’//
At this moment Pippin stuck his head around the door and signaled he needed to leave.
‘I have to go, I don’t know if we shall ever meet again, but never forget that I love you’
Merry turned to walk out
‘Never forget me Gelir’
The door closed behind him and locked. Gelir collapsed to the floor falling to choke back her sobs. She curled up into a tiny ball upon the floor and cried for as long as she could remember.
************************
A few weeks later Gelir’s period stopped and her and Merry continued to make love in secret. Secret however did not stop Esmarelda’s suspicions from rising.
