Chapter seven Time continues
Several months passed and Elrohir slowly improved and therefore saddened when the distance between him and Erestor grew daily in response of his improvement. Elrond, Elladan and Glorfindel noticed and Arwen sneakily steered them in the right direction and then she had three helpers to ensure something blossomed between them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond smiled as he walked into his study, seeing Elrohir working again. “I missed this sight. Glorfindel almost succeeded this morn.”
Elrohir snickered. “Erestor will not like hearing that. He greatly enjoys watching the two of you.”
Elrond nodded. “I figured as much. How are you?”
Elrohir stood and leaned in close, forcing the elder elf to embrace him. “I fear testing the bond today, adar.”
Elrond smiled. Last time Elrohir had collapsed, screaming in pain, when the distance had grown again. If it hadn’t been the sudden disappearance of any discomfort when Erestor had returned to his side to make him sceptic, hearing Erestor say he had walked further before had. But thanks to Arwen he knew why and he was not about to enlighten the counsellor. He agreed with his daughter: the two needed to work through this together.
He focused his attention back on his son. “I am inclined to forgo testing it for a while. Seeing you collapse like that scared us all. Ha, there he is. Erestor?”
Erestor inclined his head and approached. “My lord?”
Elrond shook his head, a smile gracing his features. “How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that? Perhaps you can get it through his mind, Elrohir?”
Elrohir smiled. “I shall try, but I don’t think I’ll succeed. You know he’s as stubborn as a mule.”
Elrond nodded. “Aye, you are evenly matched.” He could see Erestor’s eyes temporally widening in shock and disbelief, but he played innocent. “After what happened last time I think we are all a bit afraid of testing the bond, Erestor. Do you agree?”
Erestor was about to give his prepared and practised list of reason for the continuing the test but upon seeing Elrohir’s fearful eyes he sighed and shrugged. “It matters not to me.” With that he deemed the matter closed.
He walked on and sat down, looking at Elrond in small wonder. “Is there anything else you wanted?”
Elrond nodded. “Aye. I need this archived and I still don’t know your system.”
Elrohir grinned. “Adar, really.”
Erestor smiled at the remark and blinked his eyes at the pile. That would take him to dinner and Elrohir and he had evolved the habit of going for a walk beforehand. “It seems I won’t be able to make our daily walk, Elrohir.”
The twin nodded, his eyes shining with affection. “Yes you will. I shall help you. Come on.” He pushed a pile in Erestor’s hands and grabbed one himself. “Contrary to my father, -I- do understand your system.”
Both failed to notice Elrond’s smirking eyes. They were being set up.
The ruler swiftly left the study and ran down the path. “Hurry up. They won’t be long.” Glorfindel’s snickers reached him from high in the trees and before he knew it the other had jumped down before him.
Seeing Elrond’s startled eyes the blond raised an eyebrow. “Don’t tell me I startled you?”
Elrond nodded. “Aye. I didn’t notice you, my friend. It seems you finally succeeded.”
Glorfindel shook his head. “I didn’t for I didn’t even try. So I will continue.” Like Erestor they too had grown to love this and it honed their skills, so why stop.
Elrond smiled grateful. “Is everything ready?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye. They know what to do and when. I hope this works.”
Elrond nodded. “I do so too, but Arwen was very adamant it would. Who knows what Galadriel and Celeborn taught her.”
He left just as swiftly and pulled Glorfindel along by the wrist. “Come with me. I want to check Lasagor.”
Glorfindel followed. “That is one lucky mare, Elrond. She should have died from that cold.”
Elrond shrugged. “It is a very potent brew and works on any living creature, one just needs more than the other, that’s all.”
He now entered the stables when the mare was recovering nicely, though her old stamina was gone for ever. She came when she saw Elrond and nuzzled his hand, feeling grateful for his care. “I don’t think you get to carry Elrohir beyond our borders again, my dear.”
Glorfindel looked sad as well. “Than I suppose he’d better have a new horse all together. You know how fond they are of speed. Can she do that?”
Elrond nodded. “But not for long distances or times.” His eyes saddened but he smiled at her. “But she’ll get much satisfaction in teaching young elves how to ride. I shall tell Elrohir myself. He feels guilty for what happened to her, even though he doesn’t speak it. Erestor tells me his dreams are still hunted by that day.”
Glorfindel sighed. “It’s not likely to pass soon, Elrond. He was suffering greatly in body and spirit. It takes time. Look at Elladan.”
Elrond smiled and nodded. “Aye. One twin is fixed and the other falls to pieces. I already fear what might happen when Elrohir has healed.”
He allowed the seneschal to steer him back inside and his mind on more pleasant thoughts with his inane chatter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled as Erestor told him about the pranks he and Elladan had pulled in times from before his memory.
Suddenly the counsellor stopped talking and motioned for him to remain silent as well. He followed silently as Erestor sneaked forward. After pushing some of the bushes away they could see two elves standing, reading stuff from a paper.
When Elrohir heard the words his eyes widened before anger took over. Only Erestor’s calm hand on his own made him remain silent and unnoticed.
They waited for the two others to nod to each other and leave.
Elrohir’s lips were tight lines. He knew just who to yell at.
Erestor remained as the twin ran back to the house. Erestor smiled. Unknown to himself the twin was testing the strength of the bond. He slowly headed back, setting course for the dining area. He was hungry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan jumped up when Elrohir burst inside, his eyes aflame with anger. He instantly backed away, knowing first hand his twin’s punch was to be avoided. “Ro?”
Elrohir ignored him and towered over his sister instead. “How could you, Arwen? I trusted you!” The highly innocent look she gave him was wasted and he growled. “We saw them reading from a piece of paper. How could you? Now he’ll hate me. He’ll hate me.”
He sagged to the floor, no longer able to hide his tears and he smiled when Elladan instantly embraced him. “Ro? Who’ll hate you?” He locked eyes with his sister. “What did you do?” Concern and anger were at war in his tone.
Arwen shrugged. “They were not supposed to read from the paper. We want you to be together.”
Elladan shook his head and rolled his eyes as understanding dawned on him. He focused on his twin again, forcing Elrohir to listen to him. “Look, Erestor will probably think it a prank from Arwen or me. Do not worry. Come, clean yourself up and then eat with us.” He gave his twin a tickle attack, forcing him to laugh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dinner passed along in silence but it wasn’t uncomfortable, save for Arwen. She really didn’t want Erestor and Elrohir to suffer from this. It seemed that the ones who knew had reached a silent agreement to keep the failure from Elrond, at least for the time being.
When dinner was over Erestor softly called out for Elrohir. The twin felt himself wobbly in the legs but forced himself to look at Erestor. “We haven’t finished our walk yet.” He guided Elrohir out and smirked. “So, who was behind it? Arwen or Elladan?”
Elrohir smiled, realising his twin had been right in his assumption. “Arwen. I can’t believe she did that.”
Erestor’s eyes sparkled. “I don’t think she planned for them to read from a paper. Her prank failed.” He shook his head and stopped.
He had best get it over with and today’s events showed delay wasn’t an option. “Why are you pretending the bond is still in place, Elrohir? You would be able to roam the valley again, though you give every effort not to.”
Elrohir blushed and lowered his head. “I am sorry, Erestor. I know I am being selfish.”
Erestor cocked his head. “Selfish? Your motives are selfish? That’s not like you.” And Erestor didn’t like that. He was worried for the twin.
Elrohir shrugged. “It’s just that being with you makes me forget my pains. I’m not alone anymore and I don’t want to lose that. I am sorry, Erestor.”
Erestor gasped but swiftly recovered and embraced the twin. “Why would you lose it? I like our walks just as much as you do. And we can still spend time together walking, reading, working…” He trailed off, knowing the twin understood.
Elrohir looked up when Erestor forced him to make eye contact. The counsellor’s voice was soft and gentle as he spoke again. “Do you really think things will change just because this happened? Maybe we didn’t raise you as well as we thought.”
Elrohir smiled and his eyes found new hope. “You mean that? Even if I snuggle up to you in the dead of night?”
Erestor laughed and nodded. “Aye. I will always be there for you, Elrohir, as will my arms at night.” He pulled the twin into a hug and kept it for a while, neither of them saying a word.
After the twin pulled back Erestor locked their eyes and placed a wayward strand back. “Did I set your fears at ease? Or will you run again?”
Elrohir bit his lip. “I didn’t want to run, Erestor, but I knew I was fading and I didn’t want to die on Elladan.”
Erestor nodded. “Contrary to popular belief Valinor cannot heal the wounds of the heart, Elrohir.”
The twin looked at him in shock. “But nana…”
Erestor nodded, sitting down on a bench, keeping the comforting contact in place, knowing Elrohir needed it. “Her wounds were wounds of the mind, Elrohir. Valinor can heal all wounds, safe those of the heart.”
Now Elrohir understood and he smiled when the counsellor pulled him closer, guiding his head to rest on his shoulder. He closed his eyes and savoured the peace he had in Erestor’s arms. “I am still aching, Erestor. I would be lying if I spoke otherwise. But you make it less important. Having you around…” He stopped speaking, afraid to give himself away.
Erestor’s arm tightened around him in response. “You have me for as long as you need me, Elrohir. Come to me when you feel your heart ache again or when just need some company. I will be there. Do not run and do not hide.”
Elrohir nodded and snuggled even closer. “I am sorry, though. Being with me stops you from being with your beloved. Even if he doesn’t return it, you must miss seeing him.” He couldn’t help sadness from seeping into his voice.
Erestor smiled at the concern. “Do not worry. It is not important. You are important to me now.”
He decided a joke was in order and so he shrugged and made his voice sound stoical, like he was stating the obvious. “And who knows, maybe he’ll now realise what a treasure I am?”
Elrohir snorted and looked up. “Getting cocky, are we?”
Erestor smiled. “You must be rubbing off on me. Come on, my little one. We need to go inside. I swear I can still feel the wind getting colder.”
Elrohir smiled. “That means the bond is still there.”
Erestor nodded. “It must be. Either that or Peredhel treats are contagious when one spends so much time with them.” He locked eyes to make sure Elrohir couldn’t misunderstand and knew he was just joking.
Elrohir laughed along. “If that’s so I’ll place my money on adar first. You’ve spend more time in total with him than me.”
Erestor smirked and allowed the banter to continue.
He placed his arm on Elrohir’s back. “Come on. You are tired and I could do with a good night’s rest as well.”
Elrohir rested his head on Erestor’s shoulder. He did not know for how much longer Erestor would be only his but he was determined to make the best of it. And maybe Arwen was right. Maybe he could win the counsellor’s heart during those times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel sat up in bed, frowning as he didn’t detect any danger that could have woken him and his presence was enough for Elrond’s sleep to be peaceful so the ruler didn’t have nightmare to wake him up either.
When the door cracked open the seneschal strained his senses, but softened when he saw Elladan hesitantly shuffling inside. “What is it?”
If Elladan was startled to see the blond in his father’s bed he didn’t show it but simply smiled and walked closer. “I cannot sleep.”
Glorfindel nodded in understanding and opened his arms. “Come, I held your father till he slept and I can hold you.” Seeing Elladan lower his eyes in guilt he realised the twin needed his father’s arms. He sighed and nodded. “Come here. We’ll wake him. He’ll hate us more for letting him sleep.”
He gently shook his friend. “Elrond, sleepyhead, wake up. Your son needs you.” Glorfindel waited a few seconds for the words to reach Elrond’s brain but then the Peredhel responded by waking instantly.
The eyes immediately settled on him in question.
Elladan released a soft happy scream and cuddled as close as possible. “I can’t sleep.”
Elrond drew him close and guided him to settle between him and the blond. “Ai, Elladan. Are you all alone in your room?”
The twin nodded and sighed contented, glad to feel his father’s comfort. “I’m sorry.”
Elrond shook his head, placing a parental kiss on the twin’s head. “Don’t be. Come, let us try and sleep together. Or stay awake together.” He looked at Glorfindel pleadingly and the blond nodded.
Glorfindel temporarily left the bed and retrieved Elrond’s flute. Sitting back he made himself comfortable before he started playing soft, soothing melodies. He was pleased to see it worked. Both Peredhil soon dozed off.
Chapter eight Correspondence
Glorfindel frowned when he found Erestor the sole occupant of the breakfast table. He grinned. “Dare I inquire where your little shadow is?” Erestor threw him an angry and hateful look but the blond just ignored it and sat down. “Off all the people to see eating alone, you are the last I expected to do so, my friend.”
Erestor’s smile broke through. “Elladan dragged him off for some sort of prank. And you, not trying to sneak up on Elrond?”
Glorfindel shook his head. “Not yet. I always fail in the mornings, thanks to you.”
Erestor inclined his head. “You are most welcome.” His eyes sparkled with mirth. He was so focused on the blond he failed to notice the small pull of his soul to tell him Elrohir was close again.
Glorfindel wiped his mouth to get rid of the excess milk and cocked his head. “Serious, Erestor, how -is- your shadow doing?”
Erestor shrugged. “I don’t know, Glorfindel. He’s doing better but there’s so much he’s hiding, even from me.” He shook his head. “It eats at him and I don’t like it.”
Glorfindel nodded. “We must give him time. It is very possible he has convinced himself you would ridicule him for his big secret.” He raised his hands in defence when the counsellor glared again. “Don’t glare, please. I am only offering a suggestion.”
Erestor snorted. “Than give one that makes sense.”
Glorfindel smirked and nodded, refilling his milk. “All right. I have it on very good authority that love fixes everything.” He looked at Erestor innocently. “Why not tell him?”
Erestor cocked his head, his eyes narrowed. He simply didn’t believe the blond knew.
That look seriously strained Glorfindel’s muscles and the blond lost the struggle not to laugh. “Oh really, Erestor. It is so obvious. The whole valley knows.” He rolled his eyes. “Save for Elrohir, that is. Just tell him, meldir.”
Erestor jumped up and glared at Glorfindel. “Why don’t you stick your nose in someone else’s business. There’s nothing to tell Elrohir!”
When Glorfindel raised his eyebrows in mock Erestor snapped. “I am not telling him I love him. And certainly not now. You have the brains of a mindless cow.” He banged his plate back on the table and left, absolutely furious with the blond at this point.
Hidden behind a pillar a pale twin sagged to the floor.
Elladan smiled warmly. “Why do you think Arwen orchestrated that? Not for a prank. Go to him.” He sat down. “Love shouldn’t be wasted and it should always be spoken. I know that now. Do not lose yours the way I lost mine.”
Elrohir’s eyes filled with tears and he leaned in closer to his brother. “I am so sorry. I hope you find…” He trailed off and hugged him closer. “Do you really think I should…”
Elladan pulled back and nodded. “You heard him say it. Go!” He pulled his twin from the floor and shoved him away. “Go!”
Elrohir wiped away his tears and nodded, dashing off.
Elladan shook his head as he entered the hall. His eyes widened when he saw Glorfindel’s smile.
“Your twin better be following the counsellor.”
Elladan sat down as he gasped. “You knew he could hear?”
Glorfindel nodded. “They’ve been dancing around each other long enough, wouldn’t you say? And aye, love isn’t to be wasted. I guess the old saying is more than true.”
Elladan frowned. “What old saying?”
Glorfindel bit into his bread before answering. “That you don’t know what you had until it’s gone and once you do, you realise its true value.”
Elladan smiled saddened. “I am sorry. I’ve never really realised the pain you and adar must have suffered.”
The blond stood and grasped Elladan’s shoulders. “Because you hadn’t experienced it. And for that we were grateful. And in a way we find ourselves not truly understanding your pain.”
He smiled and placed back a wayward strand when Elladan frowned. “Both your father and I know where our lovers are, but you don’t even know what happened to yours. And when we draw comfort in knowing them happy in Valinor or Mandos, you can’t.”
Elladan nodded. “Where do you think he is?”
Glorfindel shrugged. “I really don’t know, Elladan. The best bet would be Valinor, since he also mysteriously came from there, but it is too much of a gamble to journey there.”
Elladan nodded. “And I would only miss everyone and everything here.” He smiled widely. “Don’t worry. I am not sailing for a long, long time. And now you have to go on patrol.”
Glorfindel nodded and left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor growled and threw the irritating volume away. He wasn’t really angry about the book. Glorfindel’s remarks still were in his system and needed a way out.
“Erestor? It’s not like you to treat books so harshly. Even if they are the summit of annoying.”
The counsellor twirled and looked wide-eyed at the approaching twin.
Elrohir smiled, placing the book back on the table. He opened his mouth several times but he couldn’t pronounce anything besides the stuttered name of the counsellor. He blushed a dark shade and turned, feeling insecure.
Erestor approached and rested his hand on Elrohir’s shoulder. “What is it? Is something wrong?”
Elrohir raised his head to look at him. Again he opened his mouth repeatedly. Finally he closed his eyes, lowered his head and drew in a big breath. “I came to say you are wrong in your assumption. Which is unusual for you always correct, but now you aren’t and I am glad.”
Erestor frowned. “What are you talking about?” His voice belayed his confusion and Elrohir’s blush intensified.
He looked up and he just couldn’t speak. So, he decided for action instead. Without warning he leaned closer and claimed the other’s lips, delivering a sweet yet uncertain kiss to them.
Erestor immediately jumped back, his eyes wide with shock and disbelief.
Elrohir wrung his hands. “You told me you loved another and I never dared approach you but…” Suddenly he stopped speaking and he shrugged. “I love you.”
Erestor blinked several times but his mind swiftly connected everything and he couldn’t help but scream his happiness. One move had Elrohir elevated above him and he twirled them both around. When he lowered the shocked Peredhel he shook his head. “We’re a pair of fools, you and I. It is you I love as well, Elrohir. But you’re Elrond’s son. I never…”
Elrohir cocked his head, his eyes filled with confusion. “What does my father have to do with that? Do you believe you’re betraying his trust?”
Erestor shrugged. “I am your tutor and his best friend, along with Glorfindel.”
Elrohir shook his head. “You were our tutor and you did a great job. And how can he disapprove when he already knows what a jewel you are? Please let us try this?”
Erestor nodded. “Aye. I love you.”
Elrohir leaned in closer and closed his eyes. “I know the bond has almost faded, though I can still sense you when you are close.”
Erestor smiled. “I know. It must be our love that has kept this portion alive. Or maybe you aren’t completely healed yet. Only time will tell. And Elrohir…”
The twin nodded and finished before the other could. “We should go slowly. I still have some healing to do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond coughed and smiled when Glorfindel yelped and turned around, his hand over his heart. “Elrond? Don’t do that.”
Elrond laughed. “That’s what I would endure should you one day actually succeed in your goal. Now you know what I will suffer.”
Glorfindel smirked. “You do realise now I am even more determined to succeed?”
Elrond smiled and nodded. “Counting on it.”
He walked to the balcony and leaned against it. “A letter came or you today. Here it is. And Erestor and Elrohir have finally admitted their love to each other. My other son tells me you had something to do with that?”
Glorfindel smirked and nodded. “I felt they had been dancing around the bush long enough. Don’t you agree?”
Elrond nodded and stood again. “The air has certainly become more relaxed, so I have no complaints. I shall see you at dinner, my friend.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel smiled when the wind played with the letter in his hold. He had forgotten it after Elrond had left but now seemed as good a time as any to read so he nodded and opened the letter. His eyes widened when he read it and he almost dropped it repeatedly before he was done.
He walked to his rooms in a daze. When he hit his own wardrobe he shook his head and got rid of the spell he had been under. He grabbed the paper again and this time carefully read it.
Glorfindel, Valinor has healed me. Enough for me to venture a journey home. I miss my parent’s realm and Imladris, but mostly I miss the people that meant and mean so much to me. And don’t even think that it doesn’t include you, for it does.
Glorfindel wiped away a fresh tear that started to drop on the writing.
I know you blamed yourself, as did my sons and husband. But no one is to blame for what happened. No one. I hope time has healed your pains as well.
/Aye, but time has added new wounds to the old ones./
You must be wondering why I write, after such a long time, and why you instead of my beloved Elrond. Truth is that I’ve wanted to write for some years now, but lacked the courage to do so. This must be the thousanth letter and even now there is no telling if it actually will be finished and posted. Varda herself has offered to aid me there, ensuring you will receive it. I want to return home, Glorfindel. To my friends and family. But I write you instead of Elrond because I do not know how strong I will prove to be. If indeed, what I fear might happen, I turn back out of cowardice and fear, it will gravely upset my children and husband and I do not wish to bring them new pain.
Glorfindel smiled at her words. /To even consider doing this shows great strength and courage. You will make it here, that I vow./ He read further and after some calculation he realised the lady had planned the journey over two years. After some moments he grabbed pen and paper.
My lady,
Why wait so long? I shall arrange for an escort, as much men as I can spare without making Elrond suspicious. Perhaps Celeborn’s men can come? Can I tell them or do you request secrecy towards your parents as well? My heart rejoices at the thought of seeing you and Elrond together again. I will not say he has remained unchanged, for he has greatly changed, but his love for you remains unaltered. I feel I should caution you on this front, my dear lady, otherwise your return might be a bit of a disappointment.
He had trouble writing a signature and in the end he merely placed his name beneath it, much as she has done. He signalled a bird closer and tied it around its leg after asking to take it to Valinor and to the lady Celebrían.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two days passed and then Glorfindel found a reply waiting for him in his room, attached to the same bird. He could see the joy of Valinor in the animal’s eyes and he smiled. His smile grew when he read the letter.
He nodded. It certainly seemed she had given this much thought, which only strengthened his belief she would indeed make the whole journey.
He leaned back and nodded. /It might be best to indeed do as she states. By talking about this Elrond will not expect the same Celebrían back. She is right about that. Both of them had changed and maybe the only thing connecting them now is their children./
Another smile was born when he finally fully realised he had authority to tell Celeborn and Galadriel about her plan. They could help him keep it a secret and they could then meet her at the Grey Havens. Journeying with her parents would be better than journeying alone.
He almost reached out to contact them but held back. He decided it would be better for them if they learned of it at a closer date. If Celebrían indeed backed out before sailing it would hurt her parents. So he had to keep the secret a few years longer. He only hoped he could manage to do so.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond smiled, seeing Elrohir chase Elladan through the hallways. Without turning the ruler spoke to his counsellor. “I see the truth has finally set you both free. I can’t remember the last time I saw both my sons so happy.”
Erestor blushed. He couldn’t help himself. “I love him.”
Elrond nodded. “And he loves you. Why you thought I would disapprove fails to reach understanding with me.”
He turned and smiled warmly. “I hope you are both comfortable with it?”
Erestor nodded, calling on all his courage to look the other in the eye. “But it will take me time to get over this weirdness. If still feels wrong, Elrond. Like I am betraying your trust.”
Elrond smiled and placed a calming hand on Erestor’s shoulder. “Which you are not. Elrohir reached maturity long ago and I know you’ve loved him when he was still an elfling. You never betrayed my trust.”
Erestor’s eyes widened. “You knew?” He swallowed in fear, angry with himself for even feeling afraid.
Elrond shrugged. “Only now, Erestor. I never knew but in retrospect I should have seen something. But it doesn’t alter the fact: you never betrayed my trust, Erestor. I just wish you had spoken sooner. It would have spared the both of you pain.”
Erestor blushed. “Can we go back to work?”
Realising the other was still feeling uncomfortable discussing this, Elrond nodded and returned to his desk. “Of course. But first I have a request. Would you watch Glorfindel for me?”
Erestor narrowed his eyes. “Somehow I fear your words.”
Elrond shrugged. “He’s keeping a secret from me. He’s hiding something and I don’t know what it is. I can tell he practically bursts with the desire to tell.” He sighed. “As I healer I can only see the dangers of such actions.”
Erestor nodded. “And now you hope I may be able to find out the nature of said secret?” He smiled. “I will do my best.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Galadriel frowned when Celeborn blinked and sank back after far speaking. “What is wrong?” She knew the signs in her husband well enough to know something had stunned him beyond belief.
He shook his head and his puzzled eyes settled with hers. “Glorfindel told me Celebrían is planning to return. Our daughter wrote him.” His voice belayed his scepticism, but Galadriel knew and understood it was merely a way to protect his own heart. He shook his head. “I know it is true for I saw the letters through his eyes, but still…”
Galadriel smiled. “When will she return?”
Celeborn shrugged. “I don’t know. Glorfindel wanted to keep it from us but he couldn’t. He needed to tell someone.” He shook his head. “This needs to settle with me.”
Galadriel smiled. “It would be wonderful if she could make it. We shall meet her there.”
Celeborn pulled her close, knowing she needed it as much as he did. “That’s what Glorfindel asked. That we could prepare her for the changes in Elrond. He stated he would mentally prepare Elrond. Though how he will manage without giving this away I do not know.”
They laughed and stared out over the trees, their hearts filled with hope and dread.
Chapter nine The road home
Elrond frowned and walked up to the blond, who was staring out over the trees. He knew it was the direction of the Grey Havens and he was now severely concerned for him. For the last few years Glorfindel had been extremely distracted and had often talked about changes, especially in elves and he become absent-minded.
But what really had Elrond fearing was the sudden disinterest in their usual hunt.
“Should we turn the tables around, old friend?”
Glorfindel jumped a mile high and shook his head, glaring at Elrond. “Why do you succeed where I fail?” He pouted, or pretended to do so. “Not fair.”
He grinned and his eyes became happy. “I am sorry, my friend. I just expect company to be arriving soon, but I have no idea how long the journey will last, so I cannot prepare rooms.”
Elrond cocked his head. “Do you know how many will arrive?”
Glorfindel nodded, but then swiftly shook his head. He had no idea how many elves Celeborn and Galadriel had taken with them. He hoped everything went well. Involuntarily his eyes darted over to the road again and Elrond’s eyes darkened.
“I need to distract you, I see. Shall we go to the patio and tease the twins?”
Glorfindel’s eyes began to sparkle. “With childhood stories, you mean? Aye, we shall.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían sighed, feeling torn. She was happy to see the shore come into view but she had no idea how it would feel, walking that soil again. But her heart called her home and she could no longer resist its call. Her eyes watered at the pain she had caused her family.
Hearing a sigh she cut her musings short and smiled when she saw the two warriors that had begged and volunteered to join her and that made her realise she wasn’t the only one with insecure feelings.
She advanced on them. “Elrond will offer you housing, I am sure. You can search from there.”
The warrior nodded. “I just wished I knew what it is I miss.” He shrugged. “But I trust I will find it, in time.”
She nodded and embraced him. “And you can always come to me.”
The male turned his now smiling eyes to her. “You’re going to pamper me, aren’t you?”
She nodded. “Aye. Pampering you felt extremely good and I shall never stop seeing you as a son, even though I am going to see my own back.”
Those words made her face the other elf and she smiled sadly. “At least I know what to expect. But I am sure Glorfindel would have mentioned a mate or lover if he had one.”
Ecthelion nodded, but the insecurity didn’t leave his eyes. Like her, his heart called him to Imladris, or rather: to Glorfindel, but he couldn’t help fear finding him bound to another. “We both died and were reborn. He might not be for me now.”
She determinedly shook her head. “I do not believe that. But it is good to know the possibility exists. For if it does turn out to be true it will not hurt so much. But do not abandon me. I shall ask my parents to house you instead.”
He smiled and nodded.
They jumped when Lilliath jumped up and screamed. “Lady Celebrían. Your parents. I see your parents. They’ve come to welcome you back.”
Celebrían ran forward, squinting her eyes, but she couldn’t see the faces on the distant shapes, that were only growing slowly, aggravatingly slowly. But she knew her friend was right. Lilliath had the brightest eyes of all and could count each feather of the highest flying bird.

Elladan smiled at the counsellor. “Didn’t my twin drive you to exhaustion yet?”
Erestor smiled and shook his head. “Nay. Where is he anyway? He was supposed to be here.”
Elladan shrugged. “I am sure you can find him if you want to. Nay, adar and Glorfindel came here earlier and regaled us with childhood stories.”
Erestor laughed warmly. “I shall not look for him. I’ll be in my room.”
Elladan nodded and for a brief moment his eyes darkened and misted over.
Erestor instantly lowered himself and buried the twin in a hug. “Someone will come, Elladan, and then you’ll have love again and someone waiting for you. Be patient and trust in the Valar.”
Elladan nodded. “I am, I do. But sometimes this loneliness is too painful and guilt attacks me again. I failed him, Erestor, but I now do believe he doesn’t blame me. He did love me.” He pushed the counsellor away. “Go. I’ll seek adar’s and Glorfindel’s company.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the large white ship was almost docked Celebrían jumped off and ran towards her parents. “Adar! Nana!”
Celeborn and Galadriel followed suit and the tears stopped falling. The moment the boat’s inhabitants came into view their tears had finally been released. The three tightly hugged each other close and remained that way for a long time.
The Galadhrim kept a respectful distance but honoured them by joining together in a fitting song.
When the embrace finally ended Celebrían’s look became one of wonder and she searched amongst the many faces for Glorfindel’s.
Celeborn smiled. “Glorfindel is preparing everything in Imladris and he asked us to meet you.”
Galadriel nodded. “He’s always been extremely pleasant and considerate.” She gasped when she saw the elves accompanying her daughter. “That’s an interesting assembly.”
The younger female smiled and nodded, dragging them towards the others with youthful enthusiasm that surprised them. “This silver-haired male is Atheron, a healer and he has always admired Elrond. I tell you, the questions he’s asked me…” She rolled her eyes to stress her point.
Celeborn held his daughter close and exchanged a look with his wife. Their daughter’s eyes were bright, shining and filled with light again. Valinor had really healed her. Though deep down they both feared the road, sole reason for their rather large escort. They knew they could do with at least half of them, but felt it would give her some security.
Meanwhile Celebrían continued talking, though chattering was more like it. “This is Lilliath, my maiden friend and the reason I didn’t go insane. She’s been a pillar to me and stopped me from backing out. She helped me write and read the letters.”
She now pointed to the other two. “And those are my personal guards, they wanted to join me. Leloth came to search for something and I consider him my son. I like mothering and pampering him. And that’s Ecthelion. He came for Glorfindel but fears to find him bound.”
Galadriel shook her head, her eyes sparkling. “It seems our daughter had gotten a new mouth, Meleth. It doesn’t seem to stop.” She made sure to show she was kidding and not making a serious comment.
She walked forward and welcomed them all to these shores.
While talking she used her powers to see what they were about and she liked what she saw.
Desire to learn and adoration in the healer; Elrond would find much joy in speaking to him.
Support and deep affections in Lilliath. She allowed herself a smile and mentally reached out. `Do not attack Elrond straight away. Give him time to adjust.` She sensed the laughter as answer and moved to the next.
Ecthelion lowered his eyes but she sensed all his emotions. `Be at peace. He is unbound and in love with you still. But I do want to caution you to set a slow pace. You will need to get to know each other all over again. Do not jump his bones but court him again.`
She smiled warmly and now settled on the last. Her eyes widened when she saw the images that were locked away from himself. /A vala removed his memory and prevents him from remembering? Why?/ She knew it was the source for his unease and the direct trigger of this search and she gave into temptation and curiosity by taking a look. Her eyes widened and she swiftly pulled back, gasping in shock.
Celeborn caught her before she could fall. “Driel?”
She smiled at him and shook her head to clear it. “Not now.”
She smiled at her daughter and nodded. “Do you want to stay here for a while or should we start moving right away?”
She leaned in, liking to feel their arms and support again, and was indecisive.
Lilliath smiled. “It would be best to get moving. No use in delaying this. I am sure this town’s lord will understand.”
Celeborn nodded. “Of course Cirdan will understand. Let us go then. We shall keep a light pace. Do you all know how to control a horse?”
The healer and Lilliath blushed and shook their heads, while the two warriors grinned. “I think we remember how to.”
Celeborn nodded. “All right. We’ll manage.” He started moving about his men and ordering and preparing everything.
Celebrían looked on and smiled warmly. “That’s how I remember him. In full control.”
Galadriel smiled and kept her close. “The times he didn’t are few indeed. And even then he never showed it. But I do remember some occasions…”
Seeing her daughter look with questioning eyes she smiled warmly. “When I was pregnant with you. He was feeling utterly useless and didn’t really like that experience. The second time was when you left; we both broke apart. And the third time was when Glorfindel first told us you had plans to return. But it didn’t compare to when I was pregnant.” She went into telling a few tales to brighten her daughter and was pleased it worked. She had seen the look darken in guilt, but figured it would take time for that pain to heal as well.
Celeborn swiftly returned to their side. “Been talking about me?”
Celebrían nodded and leaned forward, needing his presence. Suddenly she felt her eyes sting with tears and as her father tightened his embrace her happy tears came forth.
Lilliath smiled warmly and came to stand next to Galadriel. “She’s very strong.”
Galadriel nodded. “I know. But still… she couldn’t have made it without Valinor or you.” She had seen what the other had done and she would always be grateful.
Lilliath nodded, but her eyes narrowed. “But it was love from here that aided her most. I could sense it. It never altered or dimmed.”
Galadriel smiled. “He never stopped loving her.”
She sighed, sadly. “But he has changed. They both have. We can only hope they are still compatible.”
Galadriel’s smile turned mysterious as she knew they would be.
“Glorfindel?”
The seneschal turned and smiled at the counsellor. “Erestor? What is it?”
Erestor shrugged and came closer. “You tell me. Elrond is worried about you and I must confess I start to share it. Your thoughts wander too much and you stare towards the sea often.”
Glorfindel smiled. “Don’t worry. I do not feel the call. Come.”
He walked to his rooms and emptied his trunk.
Erestor stared at his actions with wide eyes and they only widened further when Glorfindel removed the bottom.
The seneschal smiled at his dumbfound expression. “A hidden compartment, Erestor. Here, read.”
Erestor sat down and he gasped the second he saw the letters. He instantly recognized her hand and he looked up in wonder, but Glorfindel merely indicated he should read.
After he was finished he swallowed, still a bit shaky. But now he understood Glorfindel’s mood. “We shall have to prepare rooms.” He shook his head. “At least now I understand all those strange subjects you talked to Elrond about.”
He sat down and grasped Glorfindel’s hand. “It makes you miss him more, doesn’t it?”
Glorfindel nodded, allowing his tears to fall. “Elrond is about to get his love back and I am happy for them but…” He smiled when Erestor pulled him closer and forced him to lay down on his bed.
Erestor waited until Glorfindel was asleep before standing up. He gently tugged him in and restored the trunk to its original state. /I wonder why she wrote you, meldir, instead of me. Perhaps Ecthelion is travelling with her. I shall have some scouts search the road and find out./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Galadriel stood and walked around the fire. Her legs were cramped up; she had forgotten what life on the road was like and after travelling to the Harbour, this journey was taking its toll.
Celeborn smiled warmly at her, but didn’t join her. Celebrían was leaning against him and he could feel her joy from the contact. “How are you doing?”
She smiled and snuggled closer. “I’m feeling like a little girl again, adar.” She closed her eyes and allowed the scents of the lands caress her nose as the wind played with her hair.
Silence descended on them and they cherished it.
After a while she looked up and finally voiced her troubles. “Did I do the right thing, adar? But springing this on them?”
Celeborn squished her and nodded. “I think so. But we can never be sure. They might still act shocked and even violent.”
Her eyes widened and she looked at him. “Violent? Are you saying my sons still haven’t…”
He smiled and shook his head. “Nay, they have dealt with the loss and faced their own fears.”
He stood. “But I know Glorfindel fears the same as I do, as would Elrond if he knew of your return.”
He sighed and looked at her. “I know he didn’t tell you for he couldn’t. Elladan was afraid to speak his love, even to his father and siblings. It’s that fear that drove his lover away, the only one that ever touched his heart. It took them years to help him heal again. Celebrían, seeing you back will open that wound. You must be patient with him.”
She nodded, her eyes wet with tears shed on her son’s behalf. “I hope he won’t go back to hunting orcs. Glorfindel told me everything, and so many things he breached so tenderly to me.”
Celeborn grinned. “But you already knew, didn’t you?”
She nodded. “Aye. New arrivals kept me informed and Námo has allowed me to watch his mirrors from time to time, to see how you were doing. But I shouldn’t be speaking about that. How many days before I see Imladris again?”
Celeborn looked up and his look became calculating. “Three, maybe four, but only if we don’t rest during the day.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled lazily at his love, who was patiently working through today’s load of papers. He completely ignored his father, but Elrond didn’t seem to mind.
The old Peredhel stood and stretched himself. “I am feeling old, Erestor. I’m starting to feel my muscles.”
Erestor laughed and looked up. “Why don’t you go for a walk? Elrohir can help me.” He ignored the disapproving groan behind him and waved Elrond out.
Once he was sure Elrond was away he spoke to Elrohir. “Really, Ro, your father needs some time away from this room.” He resettled his attention on the papers and smiled when Elrohir returned to his former position after grabbing some papers. “I am sure the table is more comfortable.”
Elrohir nodded. “To be sure, but it doesn’t offer me this great view. I love watching you.” He could see the blush Erestor was trying to fight and sighed regretfully, making a real show out of it. “And now I have to concentrate on this… this… road maintenance?” He shivered. “Well, as long as it shows me where you are I don’t mind. Let’s see…”
At some point Erestor released a growl. “Be silent! If you cannot help me in silence then leave, but I can already tell you there will be no chance for a walk if this isn’t finished.”
Elrohir pouted and came to sit at his father’s desk. “Sorry. But this is boring. Can I do something else? Balance books? Copy or store things?”
Erestor looked at him and smiled. He pointed to a bookcase. “Those shelves there are a complete mess but we just don’t have the time to clean them.”
Elrohir’s eyes twinkled. That he didn’t mind. Who knew what he might find. He had once found a beautiful necklace when he was cleaning the kitchen. He nodded. “And everything needs to be organized as well, or does it need to remain that messy?”
Erestor smiled and shook his head. “Nay, please put everything in order. There’s a pile of correspondence, and those green covers are for the finances but as you see everything is just shoved inside.”
Elrohir nodded. “I’ll do that. Why didn’t you ask for it before? I mean, you and adar must have neglected it for months.”
Erestor smiled. “You think that’s bad? Look at the closed cabinets. They’re worse, but contain old material, so we really would appreciate if you start on this one.”
Elrohir nodded and quickly made a start.
After some hours a message for Erestor arrived and after reading it the counsellor jumped up and twirled a startled Elrohir around. “Send word to your twin; tell him to come back.” He jumped again, feeling giddy. “This is so great.” He dashed off, taking the message along and leaving a puzzled Elrohir behind.
Chapter ten The arrival
Elrohir yelped when his sister suddenly dragged him along, ruthlessly. She came to a sudden stop and he banged into her. “Arwen! What do you want?”
She merely shoved him forward, showing him. “Mind telling me why your lover started staring towards the sea with Glorfindel?” Her voice was on the brink of panic for she already saw her old tutors on a ship to Valinor and it ached her.
Elrohir narrowed his eyes and stepped closer, dragging his sister along. He coughed and smiled when they both jumped up.
Erestor swiftly recovered from the shock and approached his love, embracing him before he planted a kiss on Arwen’s cheek, who giggled at the movement, as always. He shook his head. “Sometimes I think the three of you will never grow up but then I see your eyes and I am forced to believe it.”
Glorfindel grinned and cocked his head. “Erestor and I were just discussing how concerned we are about you, little Arwen. Does being a queen not hamper with your fighting skills?”
She smiled and shrugged. “A little. The people there don’t see women fight. A female soldier is unheard of. Aragorn tries to change their views but it will take time. But he spars with me regularly.”
Glorfindel nodded. “Still, I think we should spar to see if you haven’t lost your skills. Tomorrow?”
She shook her head. “How about right now? Meet you at the practising area in five minutes. Are you two coming?”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay. Erestor has to work through some correspondence and I have more shelves to clean. Perhaps I’ll send adar you way.”
Erestor jumped up startled and dragged Elrohir along. “He must be worrying. Come on.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond placed the scroll on his desk and looked at Elrohir, who was patiently working on the messy desk. He was grateful for the help and he was still more than surprised to see his youngest son at ease in his study. But he knew it was Erestor’s company.
Now that his thoughts had returned to the advisor his gaze followed and he frowned again. He did not like this lost look on the counsellor’s face. Erestor was extremely absentminded today. He stood and noticed the sounds didn’t even shook the other from his musings.
“Elrohir?”
If the twin was shocked to hear his father’s voice so close by he did not show it. Instead he turned to give him his full attention.
“Is something wrong? Erestor’s mind seems elsewhere. Do you have problems?” He didn’t really believe it but it was the only reason he could come up with.
Suddenly Erestor jumped up and screamed. “They’re here!”
Elrond and Elrohir looked at each other in bemusement before they looked at Erestor in worry. But then the sounds of horses reached them as well and their frown changed. “Are we expecting company?”
Elrond closed his eyes and reconnected to the wind outside. His eyes opened wide when his mind saw what was passing under the wind, approaching them. “Impossible….” Erestor’s remark now really hit home and he turned to the advisor, his eyes aflame with questions and disbelief.
Erestor nodded. “Ask Glorfindel. Come on, greet them!” He pulled the two Peredhel outside. “You look dashing. Elrohir, smooth your hair and straighten your tunic. Elrond, fix your braids.”
Elrohir was still wondering what was going on and did what Erestor said in a haze. And why did the approaching visitors brought Erestor to fidget this much? What army was approaching?
When they entered the outside air they saw Glorfindel pulling Estel and Arwen along, who muttered as well.
Arwen, always the more perceptive, instantly sensed her father’s mood and started wondering if this was something earth shattering. She rushed forward. “Adar? What’s happening?”
Elrond didn’t hear but walked forward, towards the trees.
Now the first horses entered their view and Elrohir smiled at seeing his grandparents. “Why have they come with such a host? And who are those strange elves?”
But then his eyes widened, recognizing one of them. “Nana?” He trembled all over and felt extremely grateful Erestor was holding him up.
Galadriel and Celeborn signalled for their men to remain at a distance and guided the new elves closer.
Celebrían’s eyes were glued on Elrond’s shape, both thinking the same happy thoughts as they devoured each other’s sight. Suddenly she jumped off and ran forward. “Elrond!”
The Peredhel followed suit and ran towards her as well, catching her in his arms.
Soon Elrohir was willing to believe his eyes and dashed towards his parents.
Celebrían saw him and instantly opened one arm to crush him close as well. The three of them cried happy tears and momentarily forgot the world.
Galadriel locked happy eyes with Celeborn, though it carried concern as well.
He shrugged. “Arwen never knew her. She will greet her later, do not worry. And Elladan isn’t back from patrol, I think.” He grinned. “Look at Glorfindel’s face.”
She did and snickered. A disbelieving look on the blond was amusing. She mentally reached out to Ecthelion. `Do not stand there but go to him, you silly.`
Erestor now approached them and bowed respectfully. “I’ve prepared rooms for you and the guests. And there are enough beds in the barracks to accommodate your men.”
Galadriel widened her eyes. “I thought this…”
He nodded. “Aye, it was. But I had spies scout the road. Partly because I still feared Elrohir walking away and partly because Glorfindel was scaring us. I wanted to know what he was expecting.”
Celeborn laughed freely. “I knew it! Someone was watching us.” He dismounted and all others followed suit.
He introduced the other elves to the counsellor, who frowned when the second soldier was introduced to him.
Erestor was swift enough to understand what was happening. “Come, I shall escort you to your rooms myself. According to Glorfindel you are my lady’s closest friend?”
Lilliath nodded. “Aye. I shall remain here and make sure they do not make mistakes.”
He grinned and nodded. He liked her already. “Perhaps we find ourselves working together. I’ve placed your room close enough to the family wing to still be appropriate. And there’s a room in the healing wing for the healer you brought along.”
The healer snorted. “I came to exchange knowledge with Elrond Peredhel, the greatest healer alive.”
Erestor laughed, knowing there were some banters ahead of this elf. “And so you shall, but not now.”
The healer blushed. “Of course not. What do you think of me? Don’t worry. I’ll find my way, herbs I can always find.” He stuck his nose in the air and sniffed three times before he determinedly strode off.
Erestor’s mouth fell open when he noticed it was absolutely correct.
Lilliath laughed. “He’s a piece of work. He’s brought enough to counter seasickness, but still he hung over the bow, throwing up.” She grinned. “He never complained and if he ever asked out loud why he was doing it he answered straight away. I hope Lord Elrond can handle blind adoration.”
Erestor grinned. “We will keep him from strangling him. Lindir shall bring you to your room, Lilliath. I suggest you rest for tomorrow night there will be a feast.”
“Why not tonight?”
Erestor turned and smiled at the face he knew so well. “Because you’ve just arrived. We all need a day to come to ourselves again and Elrohir’s twin hasn’t returned from patrol yet. I shall guide you to your rooms myself.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían pulled back and smiled warmly. “Oh, Elrohir. I am so happy to see joy in your eyes. Every time word of your life reached me, it helped me heal.”
His eyes widened and he blinked.
Elrond smiled. “I hope they didn’t tell you everything?”
She grinned. “No, there’s still some stuff I need to find out myself, so guide me or I will drown. Where’s Elladan?” She stood and looked around, searching for him. Her gaze rested on Arwen and she sucked in her breath. “Arwen?”
Elrond nodded and signalled for his daughter to approach, which she swiftly did. Before she knew it Celebrían had her smothered in an embrace. “Oh, my Arwen, my daughter. I feel so guilty, forcing you to grow up without even knowing me.” She stepped back and took her in, smiling. “My loved ones did a good job.”
Arwen blushed, happy with the praise at both her door and that of the others. She smiled. “I never saw you or met you before today but I feel I know you. Ata’da and nona told me so much and adar and my brothers too… I am looking forward to finally spending time with you.”
Celebrían nodded. “As do I, my daughter.”
Arwen looked at her father and he nodded.
He could see her insecurity and smiled warmly, speaking the words himself. “Meleth, even though she is the youngest, she is wed. Estel here is her mate.”
Aragorn blushed and glared at Elrond. “You know I hate that word. Husband, I am her husband.” He stepped forward and bowed. “It is a honour to make your acquaintance, my lady.” He noticed she wasn’t surprised at the news nor stunned he was mortal.
She smiled. “I know, I saw it in my dreams. Lorien gave me them to keep me balanced.”
She hugged her daughter again and leaned against Elrond, feeling tired. He instantly supported her.
They were happy, being together again, being one. Even though it might take some time to breach the years, and even more so with the children, but their love would remain the same, if not strengthen.
He guided her inside, feeling unsure on the sleeping arrangements.
She closed her eyes. “I do not desire to sleep apart, my love. But please give us time before…”
He nodded and gave her all the support she needed. “I am glad to have you back.”
“Likewise, my husband.” She stopped and cocked her head. “I still have your ring.” She uncovered a necklace on which it hang.
He grinned and did the same. “We shall put them back to the place they belong, but first you need your rest.” He couldn’t stop himself and lifted her, twirling her around. “My brave, strong Celebrían.”
She laughed and enjoyed it. From the corner of her eye she could see the happy smiles of her parents who had taken Elrohir under their wing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only ones left on the yard where Glorfindel and Ecthelion, who was being held close by the other, almost to the point of choking. “Glorfindel, if I promise not to disappear will you let me breathe?”
The blond blushed and hastily loosened his hold. His eyes were wet with tears, still flowing freely, and filled with disbelief and extreme happiness. Unable to express himself he lifted him and twirled him around. “You’re back! I’ve got you back!”
Ecthelion laughed and nodded. “Aye. I am back. But don’t you think we need to talk and fill each other in first? Perhaps we’re not…” He didn’t finished, not willing to risk the words becoming reality.
Glorfindel nodded and steered the other to the gardens. “I’ll show you Imladris in the meantime.” He knew his hold on the other was crushing but he did not care. Now that he finally had his love back he wasn’t going to give him up. And he realised Ecthelion was right: there was a chance they could no longer fill each other the way they had, but he would do anything to assure it would be that again.
Ecthelion sensed and closed his eyes, realising Galadriel’s warning was right. But that also meant he had this one night to discover the truth for he knew that after that Glorfindel would alter himself to adapt to him and that he did not want. /Court him again./
His eyes glistened and he laughed. “You know what? I find myself hoping we are not as compatible anymore, for then we get to court each other again. You know…”
Glorfindel nodded. “Getting to know each other once more. Our new preferences and distastes and our new faults. Are you willing to risk it?”
Ecthelion nodded. “Aye. I am. We should go slowly and start all over again, Glorfindel. So tell me, what position do you hold here?” Slowly he drew Glorfindel into telling him everything about Imladris and his little family.
Chapter eleven An unexpected meeting
Elrohir laughed and turned the corridor. “Really, Lilliath, you are as bad as my sister.”
The female laughed. “I know. Many proclaimed they saw a likeness between myself and lady Arwen.” She smiled when she saw the breakfast hall. “I knew it was grant, but this I never could image.”
Elrohir smiled and pointed out the delicate touches in the artwork.
Elrond smiled warmly and forced his gaze away from his wife. He couldn’t believe how lucky he was. They had talked throughout the night, in bed, resting, but still…
He frowned when he felt her hand tug his robe. She had never done that before. But he knew there would be many more of those little changes in her as he knew he had as well. But neither of them minded.
He turned to look at her and she cocked her head towards Erestor. “What is wrong with him? I don’t remember ever seeing him so furious.”
Elrond frowned and looked, before he laughed. “I think jealous is a better word, melethen. He and Elrohir are together and look…” He cocked towards the entrance where the twin was still talking to Lilliath.
Celebrían grinned and sighed contented, glad there was nothing wrong. “Where’s Glorfindel?” The moment she spoke she heard his voice behind them.
Glorfindel grinned. “I do believe I just…”
Elrond shook his head and signalled him to sit. “Nay, you did not. You’ve been standing there the last five minutes, waiting for Ecthelion.”
Glorfindel released a soft growl and both their lovers looked stunned although Ecthelion soon understood and smiled at the lady. “Glorfindel told me he and Elrond have a sort of contest going where Glorfindel has to successfully sneak up on your husband. And he always fails.”
Elrond frowned. “He -willingly- admitted that?”
Ecthelion shrugged. “I had to wiggle that detail out of him, but aye, he told me. And I think it is good exercise for both of you.”
Celebrían nodded. “Perhaps you should hunt each other now?”
Ecthelion shrugged. “Are we still waiting for someone or can we start? I am famished.”
Glorfindel threw him an angry look to which Elrond grinned. “At ease, Findy. And aye, we have to wait for Elrohir and Lilliath to take their seats. Tell me more about the healer, melme.” His eyes widened and he looked at Ecthelion again, having just remembered something. “Wasn’t there another warrior in your party?”
Ecthelion nodded. “Aye. I have no idea where he is. Erestor spoke to him last, perhaps he knows.”
He turned and coughed. “Counsellor Erestor?”
Erestor’s startled look settled on him and he smiled. “Do you perhaps know if our companion is joining us?”
Erestor shook his head. “He did not mention anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Leloth’s feet carried him to the kitchen.”
Elrond and Glorfindel both spat out their drinks and goggled at Erestor who snorted. “Or maybe not.” They followed his eyes and saw the elf approaching them.
Leloth smiled and sat down next to Ecthelion. “Imladris is truly beautiful, isn’t it?”
Ecthelion nodded. “Aye. We shall enjoy living here. Where’s…”
Leloth laughed, a laugh the others recognized and Elrond even noticed Elrohir’s wide eyes. “In the healing wing, about to drive the healers crazy. You know him.” He looked around. “That statue is new.”
Elrond nodded. “Aye, it is. We’ve erected it the fall three years ago.”
Celebrían narrowed her eyes before she gasped and pulled Elrond away. The Peredhel briefly yelped but allowed it. She shook her head, still coming to terms with the revelation. “How come you know him? He has just reached his maturity and this is his first time he’s sailed.”
Elrond widened his eyes. “What? But he’s Leloth! Elladan’s lover! I know he is.” He gasped and staggered backwards. “He’s reborn.” He shook his head. “But how is that possible? What is going on?”
He walked back to his seat and smiled at Elrohir, signalling him closer. “Be careful. Apparently he’s a reborn. It is natural for him to recognize things, but do not jump ahead.”
Elrohir widened his eyes. “But how did he die? After he abandoned Elladan, I mean?”
Elrond shrugged. He really didn’t know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir was glad the swift walk was over and he rubbed his sore wrist now that Erestor had released him. The second breakfast was over Erestor had grabbed him before he could continue showing the house to Lilliath.
He shook his head. “What is wrong? Erestor?”
The counsellor turned to him and his eyes were still flaming. “Stay away from her!”
Elrohir’s eyes widened and he stared at the counsellor in disbelief. He felt a tantrum coming but swallowed to calm himself. It seemed Erestor was having one for the both of them already. But then realisation dawned and he smiled, touched the other loved him enough to become this jealous.. “I was merely being polite, Erestor. She’s nana’s best friend and can tell me about the time I had to miss her.” His eyes turned loving. “Were you jealous?”
He grinned and embraced his mate, but Erestor moved out of it, glaring at him, his arms crossed before the chest. “She’s all over you and I don’t wish to share you. Stay away from her!” Elrohir rolled his eyes but he jumped back frightened when Erestor growled. “I mean it! You are my mate and I will not stand by while another tries to steal you.”
Elrohir now glared as well. “Pipe down. No one can steal me, so you just calm down. You will have to share me with my family and their friends, as I will have to share you with them. And did you mean that?”
He grinned when Erestor’s eyes widened and he stuttered instead of yelling at him again. Elrohir stepped closer and caressed his face. “I am your mate?”
Erestor blushed and nodded. “If you’ll keep me, that is.”
Elrohir laughed and threw himself at his beloved. “Of course I’ll keep you. Just try to get rid of me and you’ll see how sticky I am. Your mate… I’m Erestor’s mate…” His voice had turned loving and dreaming and he leaned in closer, claiming the other’s lips. “Why don’t you mark me, show her I am taken.”
Erestor’s eyes darkened and he steered his love to the couch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían smiled at her sleeping husband and carefully left the bed. Even though it was the middle of the day Elrond was sound asleep, needing it to restore his energy. She didn’t need the rest and there was something she needed to find out and the longer she waited the more it ate at her. /Tonight I will make sure you do naught but laugh, my love./
She placed her bracelet on her pillow to comfort him should he wake up before she returned. She didn’t want to bring another fearful attack on him. When Elrond had woken alone because she had left the bed early he had panicked and had failed to notice her standing on the balcony, gazing over the lands.
She moved swiftly through the corridors and smiled when she found the elves she needed. “Tonight we feast, and you will attend. Tomorrow Elrond will talk to you.”
The healer practically beamed with joy and nodded. “Do I have to attend?”
She nodded. “Aye. Elrond is very strict in those things and he’s liable to call of the meeting should you dishonour him by not showing.”
He turned red and shook his head. “I’ll be there, I’ll be there. I would never disgrace him. Ever.”
She shook her head and her eyes twinkled as he ran away, mumbling something about shopping for robes.
She turned to the laughing elf. “And you? Will you come or do I need to threaten you as well?”
Leloth smiled warmly. “I would love to see an Imladrian feast. But I cannot help but be concerned. So many things seem familiar, like I’ve seen them before.”
She smiled and walked him outside. “Weren’t you looking for your home? Perhaps you’ve already found it and need not search anymore?”
He cocked his head and smiled, liking that thought. “I don’t know. It seems right and it is definitely beautiful, but…” He faltered and lowered his head, searching for the right words. After a while he shrugged. “I don’t know. Something still seems to be missing.”
She embraced him and continued walking until they stood on top of the stairs leading to the yard. “Do you know Elrond had this stairs build especially for decorum so everybody has to look up? Which is why he hardly uses them.”
Leloth nodded. “I remember them entered the yard from between the pillars. There are many staircases in the building.”
She nodded. “Aye. Too many. I often got lost in my first month here. One night I was too tired to notice my wrong turns and that the corridor didn’t match.” She snickered and shook her head.
He looked at her expectantly.
She didn’t disappoint him. “I crept into bed beside Erestor. You should have heard his scream when I nuzzled him and told him, whom at the time I still thought to be Elrond, he smelled weird.”
They both laughed and sat down on the stairs.
“It is a beautiful view. Did Elrond understand?”
Celebrían nodded. “Oh yes, though Erestor acted jittery around me for months.” She looked out and smiled, seeing Elladan ride into the stables. Her heart thundered madly. “My last child returns. I hope he can handle it.”
She looked at him. “Stay with me?”
Leloth nodded. “Of course.” He smiled. “You told me that story on purpose, didn’t you? Because I know my way around so well already when everyone else gets lost.”
She shrugged. “It is worth considering, but only time will tell.” She grasped his hand as she descended, not wanted to miss her son as he would undoubtedly enter the house at the lower level.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan yawned when he left the stables. He had kept a gruelling pace to come home swift and now that he was here he wondered why Elrohir had told him Erestor demanded his immediate return. Everything looked the same.
He swiftly walked to the stairs as they would provide the shortest walk to the study, where he hoped to find Erestor. After reaching it he widened his eyes seeing two elves walk his way.
He felt his heart pound madly in his chest and his soul stirred him, pulling him closer. “Nay… this cannot be!” His knees gave way and he heard someone screaming his name. He felt the stairs hit him as he rolled down, but it was like he wasn’t there.
Time had stopped.
Hands were touching him and he felt his body heat up. His mind and mouth kept repeating his words. “It cannot be.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían’s scream had alerted Glorfindel and Ecthelion who had been walking the nearby gardens. When they arrived they were presented a sight they hadn’t been prepared for.
Celebrían and Leloth were kneeling besides Elladan’s unconscious body. The lady looked up and the pleading in her eyes took them aback.
Ecthelion was the swiftest to come round. “Fetch Lord Elrond, Glor. We’ll take him to the healing wing.” He had intentionally used a commanding tone, knowing it would reach the warrior. It worked and Glorfindel rushed away after throwing his lady a hopeful look.
Ecthelion smiled and approached. He frowned when he heard the mumblings. “He must be in some sort of shock?”
Leloth nodded and locked eyes with him. The depth and intensity took him aback and he sat back, stunned by it. The other smiled. “I guess seeing the two of us was too much for him. But I had no idea. But I know now. Oh, Elladan.” He carefully lifted Elladan. “Ecthelion, fetch Elrohir. His rooms are in the west wing.”
Celebrían shook her head. “Try Erestor’s study first.”
Leloth frowned, but then shrugged. “Who knows how many years passed since Mandos took me back.”
The words had been but a ghost of a whisper but Celebrían heard them none the less and suddenly she understood. But she would hold her suspicions to herself. First they had to concentrate on her eldest son. “Arwen and Aragorn. They must come too.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond flared up when his door was swung open. The first thing he realised was being alone. Where was Celebrían? It hadn’t been a dream, had it? Tonight was the feast. Or was it a dream and was there no feast? Was he finally losing it?
The second realisation was being dragged out of bed and he felt grateful he was still dressed.
Then Glorfindel’s voice seeped into his mind as well as the seneschal’s words, though he only heard the last part. /Healing wing? Someone’s injured! But how, who, why, where…/
The healer in him took control and he sped up, easily holding up. “Tell me again, Glorfindel. I had just woken up; you know I am not at my best then.”
Glorfindel nodded and his eyes were filled with pain. “It’s Elladan. I don’t know what happened. Celebrían’s scream reached us and we found them hovering above his body.” He flung open the door that connected the healing wing to the rest of the house and rushed inside.
The healer from Valinor was already waiting for them. “Follow me, my lord. And it’s all right. He’ll be fine.” He didn’t force Elrond to slow his pace and stepped aside to let him enter the room.
Elrond stopped in his tracks when he saw Elladan on the bed, Celebrían silently holding his hand. But what stunned him more was the presence of another elf, slumped in the furthest chair, his entire posture showing guilt. /You are Leloth, there’s no doubt about it./
He approached his wife and son, his eyes asking the questions.
Celebrían smiled. “Elladan arrived while we were sitting on the staircase, admiring the view. Seeing us he collapsed. He keeps repeating these words, Elrond. I do not understand.”
Elrond sat down and shrugged. He was at a loss as well. He knew Elladan had to be shocked, but that went for all of them.
Atheron stepped up to them and smiled. “I think I know what has happened. But it is best to discuss that in private.” His eyes pierced into the warrior and Elrond widened his eyes when Leloth stood and walked outside where he waited for them to join him.
Celebrían stood, leaning on her Peredhel, and smiled. “He will stun you many times to come. And you him.” A smile lay on her face as she thought about it.
Elrond nodded and walked outside, where Elrohir and Arwen came running. At a calmer pace Aragorn and Erestor followed. Ecthelion was there as well. Elrond smiled and waved him closer. He didn’t want them anywhere else at the moment.
He looked at the healer. “Atheron, isn’t it?”
The healer nodded. “Aye.”
Elrond smiled. “This is more than just a shock, isn’t it?”
The healer cocked his head from side to side. “Not really. He was indeed severely shocked, being unprepared for seeing them back. It is too sudden for him to really believe it. He’s in a sort of sleep. His mouth and mind keep speaking because of the shock, but I assure you when he wakes he will be normal and like before. He will know everything he did, everything up to the point when he saw them.”
Elrond pulled his wife closer, sensing her need. “What do you suggest? Seeing them when he recovers might cause a relapse.”
The healer nodded. “Aye. I advice both Leloth and Lady Celebrían not to come near him for the time being. I know it is hard, but it really is best if he senses only those he expects to sense.”
Elrohir nodded. “Adar and me.”
The healer rubbed his nose. “Or anyone else that he has know for a long time.”
Glorfindel cocked his head. “We should stay away. I spend so much time with Ecthelion our scents mingle.”
Atheron smiled warmly. “It is possible for you to go, and even for Ecthelion or myself to sit at his side. But it would not be best, since we are from Valinor.”
He looked at Elrond. “I think it best that only you, your children and counsellor Erestor sit with him. And when he comes round it is imperative he is told about our arrival. Do not shield him from the knowledge, but do not spring it on him either.”
Elrohir nodded. “I think Erestor is the best one for that.”
Erestor blushed but nodded. “If you think. But you will want to stay as well, don’t you?”
Elrohir nodded. “Aye, but I would blurt out everything.”
His eyes were settled on Leloth and many emotions were at war with him.
Erestor squished his shoulders. “Do not be angry with him. I am sure soon we will learn his tale.”
Leloth stood and approached. “Lord Elrond. I fear it is my fault.”
Elrond shook his head and stared into his eyes. “None of it is your fault. You were unaware and seeing only Celebrían would have triggered the same reaction. He’s come to terms with it and has gotten used to not having her around.”
Leloth smiled. “Thank you.” He bit his lip and sighed. “I’d better do this now.” He turned and looked at Erestor and Glorfindel. “You were right, you know.” He saw he had surprised them but he didn’t allow them to ask questions, preferring to tell it his way. He just didn’t know where to start.
Ecthelion understood and decided to help him out. “You lived in Gondolin as one of Turgon’s most trusted men.”
Glorfindel grinned. “I knew it. I was right. That was you. You died defending the city.”
Leloth smiled. “As did you two and many more.”
He sat down on the floor. “Do you remember the mirrors? Mandos’ mirrors?”
Celebrían released a little scream. “You found out the way they work? He said hardly any does.”
Leloth grinned. “Aye, I know. But I did. Warmth and pleasure came from them and I watched the world through them. But one mirror became the most important one; the one showing me Imladris.”
Erestor cocked his head. “Why?” He wondered why the other was allowed to remember so much of Mandos’ Halls when Glorfindel didn’t and it seemed Ecthelion didn’t either.
Leloth smiled. “No reason at first but then the twins were born and I just loved seeing them grow up. It was easy to talk to you as if you could hear. I never could do that with the other mirrors.”
Celebrían placed her hand on his shoulder, finally understanding. “You fell in love with him.” Her eyes shone with happiness.
Leloth nodded. “Aye. It hurt to see him suffer after…” He faltered, not sure he could continue.
Celebrían smiled. “The attack and my departure.” Her voice was sad and her other hand reached for Elrond’s, needing confirmation he forgave her. He instantly held it tight, placing it to his heart.
Erestor shook his head. “But you were so ancient when you were here.”
Suddenly Elrond’s eyes widened and he gasped. “And yet so young, as if everything was new or had to be rediscovered.”
Leloth nodded. “One day Mandos himself came to me and made a bargain. He would give me life in Imladris for three years. I could use that time to help Elladan heal.”
Elrond narrowed his eyes. “And the catch?”
Leloth shrugged. “He had to voice his love.”
He yelped when he was hit and flung across the floor. Celebrían immediately stood before him, preventing Elrohir from hitting him again. “Stop it! Let him finish.”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nana, you have no idea how much pain he has caused Elladan.”
Leloth stood and smiled at the lady before facing Elrohir head on. “He could not speak it and you know it. Forcing him to do so would have harmed him forever, shutting him even more. I loved him enough to let him go.”
Elrohir snorted. “You don’t know what he went through. O, wait, you do. You saw!”
Leloth shook his head. “Nay. I couldn’t watch anymore. It was too painful and I was reborn shortly after.”
When Elrohir was about to hit the other again he staggered back, his cheek red where Celebrían just hit -him-. “You are a grown elf, Elrohir. Act like it. And if you for one second think what happened didn’t hurt Leloth I don’t think I want to call you my son anymore.” Her voice was sharp.
Before any could speak the door banged to the wall and Celeborn and Galadriel came running. “Elrond! Celebrían! How dare you not inform us!” Rage was in their eyes and the others actually jumped back in fear.
Leloth jumped forward to protect his friends. “I’ve send a healer. Do not blame them. Elladan will be fine.”
The rulers of the golden wood calmed down sufficiently and Celeborn went inside while Galadriel remained with the others.
She cocked her head. “Your cheek is red, Elrohir.”
The twin rubbed it. It still stung. “You’ve been working out, nana. I don’t remember your spankings being this hard.”
She smiled. “You were young. I held back. Will you prevent your twin’s happiness or rejoice it instead?”
He didn’t know what to do and looked at Erestor for guidance.
The counsellor had debated it within himself and smiled. “Your mother and Ecthelion both seem to know Leloth very well and looking in his eyes I see the same elf I saw before. Soon they’ll be were they left off, the only difference being Elladan’s often pronounced love.”
Leloth looked up with joyful eyes. “He finally healed?” His voice was loving and warm and in that moment they all realised the truth. Leloth had been sent to force Elladan to heal.
Elrond rubbed his eyes, fearing he would be a mental wrack tonight. “So, you want your old job back or what?”
Leloth grinned. “Aye, but I would love to continue sparring and training.”
Glorfindel nodded. “Become one of the teachers then. And you can join Elladan’s patrols.”
Ecthelion laughed and shook his head. “Do you really think that’s wise?”
They laughed when Glorfindel caught the underlying meaning and blushed. “You are right. It is not.”
Celebrían pulled Leloth close, needing to mother him now, for she could understand his confusing emotions. She smiled at her daughter even as she started rearranging Leloth’s cloak. “Arwen, do you wish to cancel our…”
Arwen instantly shook her head. “Nay. I want to go to the market and I would like for Leloth to join us. I have to get to know you too.”
Leloth looked at Celebrían and she smiled and nodded. “Come, my child. Let us away and visit the market.”
Elrond was tempted to stop them from leaving but realised he couldn’t. “Perhaps Ecthelion wants to see it as well?”
Arwen turned and was about to scold him but she held her words when her mother placed a hand on her shoulder, leaning in to whisper. She knew how worried Elrond was.
Celeborn shook his head. “In the past she would have fought you on this, Elrond.”
The Peredhel nodded. “I know. She’s changed, but so have I. It will take a while before I can let her wander off alone.”
Aragorn hit him on the back. “Worry about Elladan now. Come, let Erestor sit with him while we prepare for tonight. And I shall personally help Elladan into his outfit.”
Elrohir turned and glared. “But that’s my job.”
Aragorn shrugged. “Fine, than I’ll help Erestor.” He ran away when Elrohir released a scream and raced after him.
Elrond shook his head. “Why do they always have to fight?” He smiled. “That reminds me I haven’t yet told her about Aragorn’s life here.”
Erestor frowned. “I hope you’re not calling me a toy?”
Elrond rubbed his nose. “We knows what my son will do to you?” He laughed and pushed him inside. “I shall trust your judgement.”
Chapter twelve the feast
Elladan groaned when he came round and looked around with an extremely comical expression on his face that seriously tested Erestor’s facial muscles.
“How are you feeling, Elladan?”
The twin looked at him and smiled, shaking his head. “Where’s adar? Shouldn’t he be here, muttering something about tripping and falling down stairs?”
Erestor grinned and nodded. “He would, but he’s preoccupied at the moment, and I don’t think you regret that.”
The twin laughed and shook his head. “Nay, not at all. What’s so important to keep him from my side?” He flared up. “Does it have anything to do with your urgent request for me to return?”
Fear shone from his eyes and Erestor hurried to sooth him. “Yes, but no because there is danger, Elladan. I assure you there is not. Calm yourself and listen.”
Elladan nodded and sat down.
Erestor swallowed, still wondering if his plan was the best way to proceed. Elladan was the most unpredictable Peredhel, so things could go awfully wrong. He sighed. “First of all, there’s a feast this eve and you should be present.”
Elladan’s eyes shone. “A feast? In who’s honour?”
Erestor smiled, pleased with this question. “In honour of the five latest inhabitants of Imladris. Elrond was to properly welcome them home.”
Elladan raised an eyebrow. He’s worked years to be able to do it. “Home? From where?”
Erestor smiled warmly and encouragingly. “I know it sounds crazy and absolutely unbelievable, but they hail from Valinor and travelled back to these lands.”
Elladan sat back shocked. /Valinor…/ The word stabbed his heart but he soon realised these elves were able to give him information about his mother and his lover.
He smiled. “Who? How many? Did they know nana or Leloth?”
Erestor smiled. This was going better than planned. “Five in total. One is a healer, Atheron. He’s really a piece of work, Elladan. He admires your father and has come here especially for him, to exchange knowledge and such. I am sure the two of them will drive each other insane.”
He was glad the words brought a smile to Elladan’s eyes and he tapped his second finger. “Then there’s Lilliath, who will soon become a permanent member of the Peredhil household. She reminds me of all of you, Elladan. She came to support her best friend and her family.”
He rubbed his nose. “And there a two warriors, one of them is called Ecthelion.” He grinned at Elladan’s reaction and nodded. “Aye, the very same, Elladan. Glorfindel and he are taking it slow, which is Galadriel’s own advice, but they spend most their time together. You’ll like him.”
Elladan leaned back and smiled. He felt like jumping about, so happy was he for Glorfindel. “No wonder he’s been staring towards the havens a lot lately. He knew he was coming.”
Erestor shook his head, but didn’t speak, allowing Elladan to voice his question in his own time.
The twin didn’t disappoint him. “Erestor? What does grandmother have to do with this?”
Erestor pulled his chair closer. “Well, Galadriel and Celeborn escorted these five elves here, Elladan. So be prepared to be hugged by them tonight. They will join this feast, as will the soldiers that escorted them.”
Elladan smiled. “I haven’t seen them for so long.” He smiled and warmed, just knowing he would see them again warmed him. Suddenly his eyes widened. “Why didn’t Glorfindel go to the Havens himself, Erestor? I am sure adar would have kicked him there. Why were my grandparents waiting there?” It didn’t make sense.
Erestor smiled and grabbed Elladan’s hand. “Elladan, I need you to listen carefully now.” He sighed and knew he had to tell the whole tale before breaking the news. “Years ago Glorfindel received a message from Valinor. He wrote back and a correspondence about a journey here began.”
Elladan smiled. “Then why are they taking it slow? If they wrote each other…”
Erestor shook his head and squished Elladan’s hands. “He did not write to Ecthelion. He knew there would be five elves arriving but he only knew the identity of one.” He nodded. “Aye, the one that wrote him and nay, it wasn’t Glorfindel.”
He remained silent, allowing Elladan to process the information and perhaps draw a conclusion. Seeing the eyes widen in shock and disbelief, but shine with hope, he knew the twin had reached it. He nodded. “Aye. Lady Celebrían returned yesterday. Your mother is home.”
Elladan gasped and he was glad he was sitting down. He looked at Erestor for confirmation and the counsellor nodded, squishing his hands once more. “You will see her tonight. And rest assured: they still love each other and are still compatible. But you cannot see her now, Elladan. She’s being dragged across the market by Arwen.”
Elladan laughed. “Poor nana. She’ll want to return tomorrow, after a day with Arwen.”
Erestor was pleasantly surprised. This he hadn’t expected. He shook his head, berating himself. Hadn’t he already established this twin was the most unpredictable Peredhel?
He stood and supported Elladan. “The feast is in a few hours. You should get ready: soak in your tub and suffer Aragorn assisting you. He’s offered earlier.”
Elladan grinned, knowing precisely what the counsellor meant. “He can tell me more about nana. This Lilliath is her lady in waiting then?”
Erestor shook his head. “Nay, her closest friend.” He could see the doubt and disbelief in Elladan’s eyes, but he understood. Until he saw it with his own eyes, he wouldn’t believe it. It was his way to protect his heart. But at least this time he would be mentally and emotionally prepared when seeing her.
He held Elladan back when the twin wanted to leave. “There’s one more thing I need to tell you.”
Elladan cocked his head. “What?” What more could Erestor have possibly to tell him?
The counsellor sighed. “Your mother has sort of adopted the other warrior that accompanied her. He’s just reached his maturity but his soul is ancient.”
Elladan smiled. “Glorfindel and Ecthelion should be able to offer support. They are reborn elves as well. So, a new brother?”
Erestor shook his head. “To your siblings perhaps, but not to you.” He didn’t elaborate and ignored Elladan’s frown at his cryptic words. He had just decided against revealing the other’s name, not wanting to jinx it. “Go to your room and prepare. I shall see you at the feast.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond smiled when he saw his wife enter their room. He was amazed at how easily he had accepted the changes in his life. He shook his head when he saw the countless bags she now placed on the bed. “Do I have any money left?”
She laughed and flung herself at him. “Don’t be so grumpy. It was so pleasing and reviving and half of this belongs to our daughter.”
Elrond held her close and frowned. “Why do you carry Arwen’s things?”
She smiled and sniffed, inhaling his scent. “Because she doesn’t want Aragorn to see it yet.”
Elrond walked backwards to the reclining chair, already having discovered her joy at sitting in it, preferably on his lap. When she inhaled his scent again after settling on his legs he shook his head. “Dare I ask why you are smelling me all the time?”
She nodded and locked their eyes. “Everything smells different here. Everything has its own unique scent and texture. Though Valinor is beautiful it lacks our variety and I always longer to have it back. I am so sorry I took me so long to find the courage.”
Elrond shook his head and kissed her forehead. “Don’t be. You are here now. That is all that matters. But we cannot stay like this for long. You need to change for the feast. I simply refuse to dance with you as you are.”
She sighed and snuggled closer. “Still bribing people I see.” She wetted her lips. “But you’ve only bribed me to change clothes, not to vacate this chair.”
Elrond smiled and twirled her hair around his fingers. He had greatly missed their banters. “Ah, but you will have to leave it in order to change.”
She nodded. “True, but there’s no reason why I shouldn’t sit back in it, remain here the entire evening. Perhaps I am too tired?”
Elrond laughed and cocked his head. “And what, my lovely lady, would be your price?” He could read her answer in her eyes and nodded, leaning in closer to claim her lips for the first time she’s returned to him.
The kiss was long, slow and filled with love, trust and happiness.
She sighed. “I hope Glorfindel and Ecthelion have as much luck as we do.”
Elrond nodded. “The Valar wouldn’t have set it in motion only to ruin the outcome. Come, meleth. We need to get moving.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aragorn growled. “Stop dallying and start walking normally! Do you want adar to see if you are fine?”
Elladan’s face became horrified and practically ran through the corridors.
Aragorn smiled, pleased the ploy had worked. Now to make sure he kept up and prevent Elladan any escapes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lilliath smiled, leaning in closer. “Stop fidgeting and tell me something about Erestor.”
Leloth grinned and his eyes had started twinkling. “He’s taken, meldir. And he thinks you’re after his mate.” He laughed and shook his head. “I am glad to be back. I missed it.”
The hall went quiet as Elrond and his wife entered.
The Peredhel smiled. “As you see the rumours aren’t just mean rumours and I also haven’t finally lost the last of my marbles. Celebrían has returned to us. Tonight we feast and properly welcome her and our friend home.”
He turned to his wife. “Welcome back, nin-vess.” He kissed her and his eyes shone with happiness.
Elrohir sighed, overcome with romantic feelings. “I hope Adan…”
Erestor pulled him closer and nodded. “Don’t worry. One look at Elrond and he has to believe it. It’ll be well. Let’s dance.”
Elrohir turned his face to him and smiled lovingly. “You want to flaunt me.”
Erestor nodded. “Aye. And?”
Elrohir grinned and nodded. “I like it. And the more people that know you belong to me the better.”
From the entrée Elladan’s gasp sounded through the room.
Aragorn gently pushed him forward.
Celebrían had frozen, fear clearly on her face. She didn’t want him to faint again.
Elrond swiftly rushed forward and embraced his son. “Elladan, are you all right?”
Elladan looked in his eyes and saw the concern for him but what made him smile was the love that lived again. “Nana’s really back.”
Elrond nodded. “Aye, she is. Come.” He laughed when Elladan sprung to life and ran forward.
Celebrían was glad she saw it coming or else Elladan’s jump would have had her falling. “Oh, Elladan. I am so sorry.”
He shook his head and sighed. But he couldn’t help feeling angry. He had his mother back but that only made his heart ache more.
She sensed it and sat down. “Elladan? Elrond told me. I think you need to look to my right.”
Elladan frowned and wasn’t inclined to follow her advice, but she gently but firmly made sure he did. His eyes widened in shock and disbelief and he looked at his mother.
She nodded. “Your father told me. He’s reborn, Elladan.” She kissed him. “I am so happy for you. Go, tap Lilliath.”
Elladan frowned. “Lilliath?”
Celebrían nodded. “Aye, the girl he’s dancing with has become my best friend. I will tell you everything about Valinor later. Right now you need to dance with your mate.” She gently pushed him forward and Elrond smiled, coming to stand beside them. “She’s right, Elladan. It’s time to heal.”
Elladan nodded and walked forward. His legs felt extremely wobbly but he continued. He stopped when he stood behind Leloth, looking the female in the eye. “Ehm, Lilliath, may I cut in?”
Lilliath smiled and nodded. “It would be my pleasure, my lord.” She swiftly left, ignoring Leloth’s funny look.
He shrugged his shoulders and turned, curious to see who Lilliath had set him up with. The second he saw the other’s face he smiled. “Elrohir? You look different. Shouldn’t you be dancing with Erestor?” He was confused, and his confusion only grew when he saw the other’s shocked and hurt look before tears gathered in the orbs. Now that he saw them he realised they weren’t Elrohir’s.
/I’ve seen them before./
/Elladan!/
One realisation tumbled over the other as he gazed into the other’s eyes.
Elladan had a hard time fighting his pain and his sense of rejection. Only his mothers words echoing in his mind kept him from falling apart. He simply didn’t remember him yet.
And then he saw knowledge and recognition slowly enter the orbs.
He smiled and stepped forward. “Would you dance with me, Leloth?” He could see the other acted on auto pilot but it didn’t stop him from enjoying the dance, the feel of the other in his arms once more. He could hear consternation to his left but didn’t care. Every sense of his being was focused on his beloved.
Suddenly the other stopped and crushed him. “Elladan! My Elladan!”
Elladan smiled and pulled the other closer still and leaned in. “My beloved Leloth. You came back to me, meleth.” Those words made the other cry and Elladan swiftly kissed him, showing him he was still the same.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ohhhh, they’re kissing.”
Elrond frowned. “Celebrían! Erestor and Lilliath are fighting, not kissing.”
Celebrían swiftly turned and her eyes widened, seeing her friend and the usually calm counsellor fight in a most unfitting manner. Elrohir stood there with a fearful expression on his face and his glance kept shifting from his father to the scene. Not even Glorfindel and Ecthelion dared intervene.
Atheron shook his head and was already selecting herbs from his pouch and ripping cloth.
Celebrían stepped forward, intend on ending this but then Erestor’s pain-filled scream filled the air and the counsellor tumbled to the ground. Lilliath glared at him and smiled victoriously.
Before either Celebrían or Elrond could address it Elrohir pushed her away and kneeled beside Erestor. “Meleth, are you all right? Where did that bitch hurt you? Oh, beloved.” He turned his head and glared. “I think it best if we stay far from each other.” He pulled Erestor close and smiled adorningly. “Why can’t you just trust me, you oaf?”
Elrond raised his eyebrows at the words.
Celebrían shook her head at Lilliath. “That’s not what I had in mind, darling.”
The other nodded and smiled. “Neither did I, but I do have honour, Celebrían, and when it’s attacked I fight back.” She shrugged. “They’ll be fine.”
Elrohir flared up and looked from Lilliath to his mother in sheer disbelief.
Ecthelion laughed and hastily stepped between them. “You father and mother filled each other in on their lives apart, on your lives as well. I think Celebrían knew, as do we all, that you and Erestor need some encouragement to deepen your relationship. And Lilliath is always willing to help.”
Lilliath nodded and helped Erestor up. “Do not worry. I am not interested in you or Elrohir. But I -am- interested in seeing you wed.”
Elrohir laughed and shook his head. “Aye, you are definitely worse than Arwen.”
He ignored his sister’s growl and kneeled before Erestor. “I don’t want anything like this happening again. I want the world to know we belong together and I don’t want you to leave, for it would break my heart. Will you please bind yourself to me?”
Erestor cocked his head. “Would you?”
Elrohir nodded eagerly. “Aye. I love you and want to be with you forever, be yours. Be mine?”
Erestor smiled and nodded. “Always.”
Elrohir jumped up and grinned cheekily. “I don’t suppose I can borrow Arwen’s ring for a while?”
Arwen playfully hit him over the head. “You certainly cannot.” Her eyes shone. “You guys had me worried. Where’s Elaldan? Elladan, Ro and Erestor….” She trailed of, seeing her other brother kiss another elf.
Elrond jumped up. “YES!” He couldn’t stop himself and rushed forward and twirled the two startled elves around. “YES! YES! YES!”
Elladan screamed, stunned by the sudden movement and briefly wondered how his father managed to do this. “Adar, put us down. Help! Someone!”
Celebrían laughed. “Put them down, meleth.” She rushed forward to support the dizzy elves.
Elladan pulled her close. “I love you, nana.”
She smiled and nodded. “And I you. I never stopped loving you, my child.” She turned him around. “While you were kissing your mate, your twin proposed to Erestor.”
Elladan jumped up and dashed forward, stunning his twin by burying him in a tight hug. When he allowed his Elrohir to breathe again he looked confused. “Erestor? What happened to you? I thought Ro proposed?”
His eyes widened and Erestor hurried to soothe him. “He did, and I accepted.” He blushed. “I got jealous.”
Elrohir embraced him and pulled him closer and looked at the healer, who smiled. “Don’t worry. Only bruises and small cuts. The only big wound here is his shattered ego.” He stood and walked away. “I am getting rid of this ridiculous outfit.”
Elrond laughed. “You are right, nin-caul, he is something else.” He shrugged. “Shall we call this feast to an end and retire?”
Celebrían moaned and leaned in close. “I desire you.”
To this Elrond gasped and lifted her, making her laugh. “See you tomorrow.” He practically ran through the corridors.
Elrohir pulled Erestor along and one look at Elladan told him the questions would have to wait till tomorrow.
Soon the only ones left were Glorfindel and Ecthelion. “Well, I don’t have to guess what will be happening tonight.”
Ecthelion laughed. “Let’s go to my rooms then, they are a bit further from the noises they are bound to make.”
Glorfindel shook his head and pulled his lover close. “Do you think they will believe we still haven’t kissed?”
Ecthelion shook his head. “Not for a second.” He waited but then looked at his lover seductively. “Perhaps we should give them a reason not to believe it.” Seeing his need mirrored in Glorfindel’s eyes he leaned in closer and claimed his lips.
Glorfindel smiled warmly. “You promised to tell me about your second youth.”
Ecthelion nodded and for the duration of the night they talked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan swung the door closed and devoured his lover with his eyes. “I missed you so much.”
Leloth smiled and grabbed Elladan’s hands. “I missed you too, Elladan, even though I didn’t know it was you I was missed. I’ve never felt whole.”
He sighed. “We should talk first, before anything else.”
Elladan shook his head. “No, we don’t!”
But Leloth was determined and guided him to the balcony.
“I never lied to you, Elladan, though I have omitted some facts, but I had to. I don’t remember much of the halls of Waiting but I do remember the mirrors. To those who wish it they are portals to show us the world of the living. A soul who doesn’t see anything but his reflection will feel cold there but if you see the world beyond you also feel the warmth of the world.”
He caressed Elladan’s face and pulled him closer when he noticed the twin’s upset state. “I was always drawn towards Imladris and one day I saw Elrond present his twin sons to his subjects.”
Elladan turned to him and shook his head. “But that’s impossible.”
Leloth shook his head. “Nay, it isn’t. I lived and died at Gondolin, Elladan, and walked Mandos’ Halls since.”
He sighed. “I saw you grow up, you, Elrohir and Arwen. I saw your pain and it cut through my soul.” He shrugged. “I had long since fallen for you and no longer cared if I would have to spend eternity there, for I could watch you.”
His eyes had turned empty, seeing it once more and Elladan watched him with fascination. He had heard others admire his beauty and his soul, but he had never believed it, until he had met Leloth and now he learned so much more. How was it possible the other had loved him for so long?
Leloth’s face was warm and smiling as he remembered. “I saw you become afraid of love, of your own love, and I longed to aid you, to show you it was the wrong way to deal with your pain.”
Tears had gathered in his eyes and Elladan held him close, hoping his presence kept the other’s demons at bay. He realised it were his old demons the other was now sensing again, but still…
“One day Mandos himself came to me and told me about the mirrors and offered me a way to help you. A bargain and I accepted.”
Elladan narrowed his eyes. “A bargain?”
Leloth came back to the present at hearing his voice and he smiled, nodding. “Aye, a bargain. He restored life to me again and I was given three years to accomplish my task. I wasn’t to mention the truth or the bargain to anyone or he would pull me back immediately.”
Elladan shook his head. “But you didn’t. You didn’t. We never knew. I loved you, love you still. Why did he take you from me?” Tears of hatred had gathered in his eyes.
Leloth placed a calming hand on his shoulder. “But I had failed, Elladan. Aye, you loved me, but you hadn’t healed yet. Mandos’ bargain was very precise. Only if you voiced your love within the three years would I remain amongst the living.” He smiled. “I never regretted my choice. I missed you and my soul bled, but I knew I did right to you.” He shrugged. “I don’t know how much time passed after that. I no longer cared for the mirrors and at one point, fifty years ago, I was reborn.”
Elladan growled, stood and grabbed the balustrade. His anger needed a way out and he needed to come to terms with this information. There were a million questions running through his head but once he opened his mouth to voice one the answer already hit him. He didn’t jump when Leloth placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Elladan? Are you mad at me?”
His voice was insecure and Elladan twirled around. Hearing it cut through his heart. He grabbed him and shook his head before he kissed him. “Never. I just need time to adjust to this. You were right. I would never have healed otherwise. When you were gone I was forced to grieve you both.”
Suddenly his eyes twinkled. “Mandos played us. He knew your love was the only thing capable of capturing mine. He knew losing you would trigger a healing process and he brought us back together. You were reborn when I was ready.” He lifted the other and screamed happy screams.
Leloth laughed but allowed it.
Once he was back on the ground he smiled. “So, are you going to welcome me back?” He wiggled his eyebrows and Elladna laughed, pleased his lover’s cockiness was breaking the tension. He pulled him close, already starting to work on the many buttons. “Of course. The warmest welcome ever.”
Leloth’s eyes widened repeatedly during the many minutes to come when Elladan did things he hadn’t done before, but mostly because his body had missed it so much.
Elladan smiled warmly when they were both finally naked, naked, sweaty and hard again. “Take me. I need to feel you.”
Leloth nodded. “I know. Grab the pillars.” He would give Elladan precisely what the twin wanted: hard and long.
He frowned and looked up when two screams rode the air.
Elladan smiled. “Ro and Erestor and adar and nana.” He shivered. “It still seems yagh when you think of your own parents doing it.”
Leloth shook his head. “Stop talking like this or I’m no longer in the mood to do it to you.”
Elladan instantly claimed his lips and raised his hips, showing he didn’t want that to happen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían smiled when she woke up. Bliss had been restored to them all. She snuggled closer and her mind already started working on clothes and displays. Three weddings…
Elrond mumbled and peeked through his eyelids. “Don’t make such racket.”
She laughed and kissed him, forcing him to really leave the dream world. “I was just thinking on the decorations and clothes for the weddings.”
Elrond’s eyebrow rose and he cocked his head. Normally he would have flared up, but Celebrían was pressing him down.
She grinned and nodded. “Do you really think Elladan won’t want to make it everlasting? Or that Glorfindel and Ecthelion won’t recommit?”
He laughed and nodded. “You are right. Three weddings.” He groaned. “How is my realm to survive that?”
He stood and flung on a robe. “Come, let’s watch the sunrise together.” As they stood on the balcony they saw their children doing the same; all embraced by their mates. It brought a smile to Elrond’s face and he pulled his wife close. “You brought peace for all of us.”
She remained silent as she watched the new day begin, seeing what her loved ones were seeing as well. She knew the room above now houses Celeborn and Galadriel and a small flowed floated down: her father’s gift to her.
From the corner of her eye she saw Glorfindel and Ecthelion admire the view as well. /Perfect! Everything is perfect./ But she knew it would not last long. Lilliath and Erestor were bound to fight some more and Elrond and Atheron would start bickering soon, she just knew it. But at the moment nothing mattered.
THE END
Several months passed and Elrohir slowly improved and therefore saddened when the distance between him and Erestor grew daily in response of his improvement. Elrond, Elladan and Glorfindel noticed and Arwen sneakily steered them in the right direction and then she had three helpers to ensure something blossomed between them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond smiled as he walked into his study, seeing Elrohir working again. “I missed this sight. Glorfindel almost succeeded this morn.”
Elrohir snickered. “Erestor will not like hearing that. He greatly enjoys watching the two of you.”
Elrond nodded. “I figured as much. How are you?”
Elrohir stood and leaned in close, forcing the elder elf to embrace him. “I fear testing the bond today, adar.”
Elrond smiled. Last time Elrohir had collapsed, screaming in pain, when the distance had grown again. If it hadn’t been the sudden disappearance of any discomfort when Erestor had returned to his side to make him sceptic, hearing Erestor say he had walked further before had. But thanks to Arwen he knew why and he was not about to enlighten the counsellor. He agreed with his daughter: the two needed to work through this together.
He focused his attention back on his son. “I am inclined to forgo testing it for a while. Seeing you collapse like that scared us all. Ha, there he is. Erestor?”
Erestor inclined his head and approached. “My lord?”
Elrond shook his head, a smile gracing his features. “How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that? Perhaps you can get it through his mind, Elrohir?”
Elrohir smiled. “I shall try, but I don’t think I’ll succeed. You know he’s as stubborn as a mule.”
Elrond nodded. “Aye, you are evenly matched.” He could see Erestor’s eyes temporally widening in shock and disbelief, but he played innocent. “After what happened last time I think we are all a bit afraid of testing the bond, Erestor. Do you agree?”
Erestor was about to give his prepared and practised list of reason for the continuing the test but upon seeing Elrohir’s fearful eyes he sighed and shrugged. “It matters not to me.” With that he deemed the matter closed.
He walked on and sat down, looking at Elrond in small wonder. “Is there anything else you wanted?”
Elrond nodded. “Aye. I need this archived and I still don’t know your system.”
Elrohir grinned. “Adar, really.”
Erestor smiled at the remark and blinked his eyes at the pile. That would take him to dinner and Elrohir and he had evolved the habit of going for a walk beforehand. “It seems I won’t be able to make our daily walk, Elrohir.”
The twin nodded, his eyes shining with affection. “Yes you will. I shall help you. Come on.” He pushed a pile in Erestor’s hands and grabbed one himself. “Contrary to my father, -I- do understand your system.”
Both failed to notice Elrond’s smirking eyes. They were being set up.
The ruler swiftly left the study and ran down the path. “Hurry up. They won’t be long.” Glorfindel’s snickers reached him from high in the trees and before he knew it the other had jumped down before him.
Seeing Elrond’s startled eyes the blond raised an eyebrow. “Don’t tell me I startled you?”
Elrond nodded. “Aye. I didn’t notice you, my friend. It seems you finally succeeded.”
Glorfindel shook his head. “I didn’t for I didn’t even try. So I will continue.” Like Erestor they too had grown to love this and it honed their skills, so why stop.
Elrond smiled grateful. “Is everything ready?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye. They know what to do and when. I hope this works.”
Elrond nodded. “I do so too, but Arwen was very adamant it would. Who knows what Galadriel and Celeborn taught her.”
He left just as swiftly and pulled Glorfindel along by the wrist. “Come with me. I want to check Lasagor.”
Glorfindel followed. “That is one lucky mare, Elrond. She should have died from that cold.”
Elrond shrugged. “It is a very potent brew and works on any living creature, one just needs more than the other, that’s all.”
He now entered the stables when the mare was recovering nicely, though her old stamina was gone for ever. She came when she saw Elrond and nuzzled his hand, feeling grateful for his care. “I don’t think you get to carry Elrohir beyond our borders again, my dear.”
Glorfindel looked sad as well. “Than I suppose he’d better have a new horse all together. You know how fond they are of speed. Can she do that?”
Elrond nodded. “But not for long distances or times.” His eyes saddened but he smiled at her. “But she’ll get much satisfaction in teaching young elves how to ride. I shall tell Elrohir myself. He feels guilty for what happened to her, even though he doesn’t speak it. Erestor tells me his dreams are still hunted by that day.”
Glorfindel sighed. “It’s not likely to pass soon, Elrond. He was suffering greatly in body and spirit. It takes time. Look at Elladan.”
Elrond smiled and nodded. “Aye. One twin is fixed and the other falls to pieces. I already fear what might happen when Elrohir has healed.”
He allowed the seneschal to steer him back inside and his mind on more pleasant thoughts with his inane chatter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled as Erestor told him about the pranks he and Elladan had pulled in times from before his memory.
Suddenly the counsellor stopped talking and motioned for him to remain silent as well. He followed silently as Erestor sneaked forward. After pushing some of the bushes away they could see two elves standing, reading stuff from a paper.
When Elrohir heard the words his eyes widened before anger took over. Only Erestor’s calm hand on his own made him remain silent and unnoticed.
They waited for the two others to nod to each other and leave.
Elrohir’s lips were tight lines. He knew just who to yell at.
Erestor remained as the twin ran back to the house. Erestor smiled. Unknown to himself the twin was testing the strength of the bond. He slowly headed back, setting course for the dining area. He was hungry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan jumped up when Elrohir burst inside, his eyes aflame with anger. He instantly backed away, knowing first hand his twin’s punch was to be avoided. “Ro?”
Elrohir ignored him and towered over his sister instead. “How could you, Arwen? I trusted you!” The highly innocent look she gave him was wasted and he growled. “We saw them reading from a piece of paper. How could you? Now he’ll hate me. He’ll hate me.”
He sagged to the floor, no longer able to hide his tears and he smiled when Elladan instantly embraced him. “Ro? Who’ll hate you?” He locked eyes with his sister. “What did you do?” Concern and anger were at war in his tone.
Arwen shrugged. “They were not supposed to read from the paper. We want you to be together.”
Elladan shook his head and rolled his eyes as understanding dawned on him. He focused on his twin again, forcing Elrohir to listen to him. “Look, Erestor will probably think it a prank from Arwen or me. Do not worry. Come, clean yourself up and then eat with us.” He gave his twin a tickle attack, forcing him to laugh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dinner passed along in silence but it wasn’t uncomfortable, save for Arwen. She really didn’t want Erestor and Elrohir to suffer from this. It seemed that the ones who knew had reached a silent agreement to keep the failure from Elrond, at least for the time being.
When dinner was over Erestor softly called out for Elrohir. The twin felt himself wobbly in the legs but forced himself to look at Erestor. “We haven’t finished our walk yet.” He guided Elrohir out and smirked. “So, who was behind it? Arwen or Elladan?”
Elrohir smiled, realising his twin had been right in his assumption. “Arwen. I can’t believe she did that.”
Erestor’s eyes sparkled. “I don’t think she planned for them to read from a paper. Her prank failed.” He shook his head and stopped.
He had best get it over with and today’s events showed delay wasn’t an option. “Why are you pretending the bond is still in place, Elrohir? You would be able to roam the valley again, though you give every effort not to.”
Elrohir blushed and lowered his head. “I am sorry, Erestor. I know I am being selfish.”
Erestor cocked his head. “Selfish? Your motives are selfish? That’s not like you.” And Erestor didn’t like that. He was worried for the twin.
Elrohir shrugged. “It’s just that being with you makes me forget my pains. I’m not alone anymore and I don’t want to lose that. I am sorry, Erestor.”
Erestor gasped but swiftly recovered and embraced the twin. “Why would you lose it? I like our walks just as much as you do. And we can still spend time together walking, reading, working…” He trailed off, knowing the twin understood.
Elrohir looked up when Erestor forced him to make eye contact. The counsellor’s voice was soft and gentle as he spoke again. “Do you really think things will change just because this happened? Maybe we didn’t raise you as well as we thought.”
Elrohir smiled and his eyes found new hope. “You mean that? Even if I snuggle up to you in the dead of night?”
Erestor laughed and nodded. “Aye. I will always be there for you, Elrohir, as will my arms at night.” He pulled the twin into a hug and kept it for a while, neither of them saying a word.
After the twin pulled back Erestor locked their eyes and placed a wayward strand back. “Did I set your fears at ease? Or will you run again?”
Elrohir bit his lip. “I didn’t want to run, Erestor, but I knew I was fading and I didn’t want to die on Elladan.”
Erestor nodded. “Contrary to popular belief Valinor cannot heal the wounds of the heart, Elrohir.”
The twin looked at him in shock. “But nana…”
Erestor nodded, sitting down on a bench, keeping the comforting contact in place, knowing Elrohir needed it. “Her wounds were wounds of the mind, Elrohir. Valinor can heal all wounds, safe those of the heart.”
Now Elrohir understood and he smiled when the counsellor pulled him closer, guiding his head to rest on his shoulder. He closed his eyes and savoured the peace he had in Erestor’s arms. “I am still aching, Erestor. I would be lying if I spoke otherwise. But you make it less important. Having you around…” He stopped speaking, afraid to give himself away.
Erestor’s arm tightened around him in response. “You have me for as long as you need me, Elrohir. Come to me when you feel your heart ache again or when just need some company. I will be there. Do not run and do not hide.”
Elrohir nodded and snuggled even closer. “I am sorry, though. Being with me stops you from being with your beloved. Even if he doesn’t return it, you must miss seeing him.” He couldn’t help sadness from seeping into his voice.
Erestor smiled at the concern. “Do not worry. It is not important. You are important to me now.”
He decided a joke was in order and so he shrugged and made his voice sound stoical, like he was stating the obvious. “And who knows, maybe he’ll now realise what a treasure I am?”
Elrohir snorted and looked up. “Getting cocky, are we?”
Erestor smiled. “You must be rubbing off on me. Come on, my little one. We need to go inside. I swear I can still feel the wind getting colder.”
Elrohir smiled. “That means the bond is still there.”
Erestor nodded. “It must be. Either that or Peredhel treats are contagious when one spends so much time with them.” He locked eyes to make sure Elrohir couldn’t misunderstand and knew he was just joking.
Elrohir laughed along. “If that’s so I’ll place my money on adar first. You’ve spend more time in total with him than me.”
Erestor smirked and allowed the banter to continue.
He placed his arm on Elrohir’s back. “Come on. You are tired and I could do with a good night’s rest as well.”
Elrohir rested his head on Erestor’s shoulder. He did not know for how much longer Erestor would be only his but he was determined to make the best of it. And maybe Arwen was right. Maybe he could win the counsellor’s heart during those times.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel sat up in bed, frowning as he didn’t detect any danger that could have woken him and his presence was enough for Elrond’s sleep to be peaceful so the ruler didn’t have nightmare to wake him up either.
When the door cracked open the seneschal strained his senses, but softened when he saw Elladan hesitantly shuffling inside. “What is it?”
If Elladan was startled to see the blond in his father’s bed he didn’t show it but simply smiled and walked closer. “I cannot sleep.”
Glorfindel nodded in understanding and opened his arms. “Come, I held your father till he slept and I can hold you.” Seeing Elladan lower his eyes in guilt he realised the twin needed his father’s arms. He sighed and nodded. “Come here. We’ll wake him. He’ll hate us more for letting him sleep.”
He gently shook his friend. “Elrond, sleepyhead, wake up. Your son needs you.” Glorfindel waited a few seconds for the words to reach Elrond’s brain but then the Peredhel responded by waking instantly.
The eyes immediately settled on him in question.
Elladan released a soft happy scream and cuddled as close as possible. “I can’t sleep.”
Elrond drew him close and guided him to settle between him and the blond. “Ai, Elladan. Are you all alone in your room?”
The twin nodded and sighed contented, glad to feel his father’s comfort. “I’m sorry.”
Elrond shook his head, placing a parental kiss on the twin’s head. “Don’t be. Come, let us try and sleep together. Or stay awake together.” He looked at Glorfindel pleadingly and the blond nodded.
Glorfindel temporarily left the bed and retrieved Elrond’s flute. Sitting back he made himself comfortable before he started playing soft, soothing melodies. He was pleased to see it worked. Both Peredhil soon dozed off.
Chapter eight Correspondence
Glorfindel frowned when he found Erestor the sole occupant of the breakfast table. He grinned. “Dare I inquire where your little shadow is?” Erestor threw him an angry and hateful look but the blond just ignored it and sat down. “Off all the people to see eating alone, you are the last I expected to do so, my friend.”
Erestor’s smile broke through. “Elladan dragged him off for some sort of prank. And you, not trying to sneak up on Elrond?”
Glorfindel shook his head. “Not yet. I always fail in the mornings, thanks to you.”
Erestor inclined his head. “You are most welcome.” His eyes sparkled with mirth. He was so focused on the blond he failed to notice the small pull of his soul to tell him Elrohir was close again.
Glorfindel wiped his mouth to get rid of the excess milk and cocked his head. “Serious, Erestor, how -is- your shadow doing?”
Erestor shrugged. “I don’t know, Glorfindel. He’s doing better but there’s so much he’s hiding, even from me.” He shook his head. “It eats at him and I don’t like it.”
Glorfindel nodded. “We must give him time. It is very possible he has convinced himself you would ridicule him for his big secret.” He raised his hands in defence when the counsellor glared again. “Don’t glare, please. I am only offering a suggestion.”
Erestor snorted. “Than give one that makes sense.”
Glorfindel smirked and nodded, refilling his milk. “All right. I have it on very good authority that love fixes everything.” He looked at Erestor innocently. “Why not tell him?”
Erestor cocked his head, his eyes narrowed. He simply didn’t believe the blond knew.
That look seriously strained Glorfindel’s muscles and the blond lost the struggle not to laugh. “Oh really, Erestor. It is so obvious. The whole valley knows.” He rolled his eyes. “Save for Elrohir, that is. Just tell him, meldir.”
Erestor jumped up and glared at Glorfindel. “Why don’t you stick your nose in someone else’s business. There’s nothing to tell Elrohir!”
When Glorfindel raised his eyebrows in mock Erestor snapped. “I am not telling him I love him. And certainly not now. You have the brains of a mindless cow.” He banged his plate back on the table and left, absolutely furious with the blond at this point.
Hidden behind a pillar a pale twin sagged to the floor.
Elladan smiled warmly. “Why do you think Arwen orchestrated that? Not for a prank. Go to him.” He sat down. “Love shouldn’t be wasted and it should always be spoken. I know that now. Do not lose yours the way I lost mine.”
Elrohir’s eyes filled with tears and he leaned in closer to his brother. “I am so sorry. I hope you find…” He trailed off and hugged him closer. “Do you really think I should…”
Elladan pulled back and nodded. “You heard him say it. Go!” He pulled his twin from the floor and shoved him away. “Go!”
Elrohir wiped away his tears and nodded, dashing off.
Elladan shook his head as he entered the hall. His eyes widened when he saw Glorfindel’s smile.
“Your twin better be following the counsellor.”
Elladan sat down as he gasped. “You knew he could hear?”
Glorfindel nodded. “They’ve been dancing around each other long enough, wouldn’t you say? And aye, love isn’t to be wasted. I guess the old saying is more than true.”
Elladan frowned. “What old saying?”
Glorfindel bit into his bread before answering. “That you don’t know what you had until it’s gone and once you do, you realise its true value.”
Elladan smiled saddened. “I am sorry. I’ve never really realised the pain you and adar must have suffered.”
The blond stood and grasped Elladan’s shoulders. “Because you hadn’t experienced it. And for that we were grateful. And in a way we find ourselves not truly understanding your pain.”
He smiled and placed back a wayward strand when Elladan frowned. “Both your father and I know where our lovers are, but you don’t even know what happened to yours. And when we draw comfort in knowing them happy in Valinor or Mandos, you can’t.”
Elladan nodded. “Where do you think he is?”
Glorfindel shrugged. “I really don’t know, Elladan. The best bet would be Valinor, since he also mysteriously came from there, but it is too much of a gamble to journey there.”
Elladan nodded. “And I would only miss everyone and everything here.” He smiled widely. “Don’t worry. I am not sailing for a long, long time. And now you have to go on patrol.”
Glorfindel nodded and left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor growled and threw the irritating volume away. He wasn’t really angry about the book. Glorfindel’s remarks still were in his system and needed a way out.
“Erestor? It’s not like you to treat books so harshly. Even if they are the summit of annoying.”
The counsellor twirled and looked wide-eyed at the approaching twin.
Elrohir smiled, placing the book back on the table. He opened his mouth several times but he couldn’t pronounce anything besides the stuttered name of the counsellor. He blushed a dark shade and turned, feeling insecure.
Erestor approached and rested his hand on Elrohir’s shoulder. “What is it? Is something wrong?”
Elrohir raised his head to look at him. Again he opened his mouth repeatedly. Finally he closed his eyes, lowered his head and drew in a big breath. “I came to say you are wrong in your assumption. Which is unusual for you always correct, but now you aren’t and I am glad.”
Erestor frowned. “What are you talking about?” His voice belayed his confusion and Elrohir’s blush intensified.
He looked up and he just couldn’t speak. So, he decided for action instead. Without warning he leaned closer and claimed the other’s lips, delivering a sweet yet uncertain kiss to them.
Erestor immediately jumped back, his eyes wide with shock and disbelief.
Elrohir wrung his hands. “You told me you loved another and I never dared approach you but…” Suddenly he stopped speaking and he shrugged. “I love you.”
Erestor blinked several times but his mind swiftly connected everything and he couldn’t help but scream his happiness. One move had Elrohir elevated above him and he twirled them both around. When he lowered the shocked Peredhel he shook his head. “We’re a pair of fools, you and I. It is you I love as well, Elrohir. But you’re Elrond’s son. I never…”
Elrohir cocked his head, his eyes filled with confusion. “What does my father have to do with that? Do you believe you’re betraying his trust?”
Erestor shrugged. “I am your tutor and his best friend, along with Glorfindel.”
Elrohir shook his head. “You were our tutor and you did a great job. And how can he disapprove when he already knows what a jewel you are? Please let us try this?”
Erestor nodded. “Aye. I love you.”
Elrohir leaned in closer and closed his eyes. “I know the bond has almost faded, though I can still sense you when you are close.”
Erestor smiled. “I know. It must be our love that has kept this portion alive. Or maybe you aren’t completely healed yet. Only time will tell. And Elrohir…”
The twin nodded and finished before the other could. “We should go slowly. I still have some healing to do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond coughed and smiled when Glorfindel yelped and turned around, his hand over his heart. “Elrond? Don’t do that.”
Elrond laughed. “That’s what I would endure should you one day actually succeed in your goal. Now you know what I will suffer.”
Glorfindel smirked. “You do realise now I am even more determined to succeed?”
Elrond smiled and nodded. “Counting on it.”
He walked to the balcony and leaned against it. “A letter came or you today. Here it is. And Erestor and Elrohir have finally admitted their love to each other. My other son tells me you had something to do with that?”
Glorfindel smirked and nodded. “I felt they had been dancing around the bush long enough. Don’t you agree?”
Elrond nodded and stood again. “The air has certainly become more relaxed, so I have no complaints. I shall see you at dinner, my friend.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel smiled when the wind played with the letter in his hold. He had forgotten it after Elrond had left but now seemed as good a time as any to read so he nodded and opened the letter. His eyes widened when he read it and he almost dropped it repeatedly before he was done.
He walked to his rooms in a daze. When he hit his own wardrobe he shook his head and got rid of the spell he had been under. He grabbed the paper again and this time carefully read it.
Glorfindel, Valinor has healed me. Enough for me to venture a journey home. I miss my parent’s realm and Imladris, but mostly I miss the people that meant and mean so much to me. And don’t even think that it doesn’t include you, for it does.
Glorfindel wiped away a fresh tear that started to drop on the writing.
I know you blamed yourself, as did my sons and husband. But no one is to blame for what happened. No one. I hope time has healed your pains as well.
/Aye, but time has added new wounds to the old ones./
You must be wondering why I write, after such a long time, and why you instead of my beloved Elrond. Truth is that I’ve wanted to write for some years now, but lacked the courage to do so. This must be the thousanth letter and even now there is no telling if it actually will be finished and posted. Varda herself has offered to aid me there, ensuring you will receive it. I want to return home, Glorfindel. To my friends and family. But I write you instead of Elrond because I do not know how strong I will prove to be. If indeed, what I fear might happen, I turn back out of cowardice and fear, it will gravely upset my children and husband and I do not wish to bring them new pain.
Glorfindel smiled at her words. /To even consider doing this shows great strength and courage. You will make it here, that I vow./ He read further and after some calculation he realised the lady had planned the journey over two years. After some moments he grabbed pen and paper.
My lady,
Why wait so long? I shall arrange for an escort, as much men as I can spare without making Elrond suspicious. Perhaps Celeborn’s men can come? Can I tell them or do you request secrecy towards your parents as well? My heart rejoices at the thought of seeing you and Elrond together again. I will not say he has remained unchanged, for he has greatly changed, but his love for you remains unaltered. I feel I should caution you on this front, my dear lady, otherwise your return might be a bit of a disappointment.
He had trouble writing a signature and in the end he merely placed his name beneath it, much as she has done. He signalled a bird closer and tied it around its leg after asking to take it to Valinor and to the lady Celebrían.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two days passed and then Glorfindel found a reply waiting for him in his room, attached to the same bird. He could see the joy of Valinor in the animal’s eyes and he smiled. His smile grew when he read the letter.
He nodded. It certainly seemed she had given this much thought, which only strengthened his belief she would indeed make the whole journey.
He leaned back and nodded. /It might be best to indeed do as she states. By talking about this Elrond will not expect the same Celebrían back. She is right about that. Both of them had changed and maybe the only thing connecting them now is their children./
Another smile was born when he finally fully realised he had authority to tell Celeborn and Galadriel about her plan. They could help him keep it a secret and they could then meet her at the Grey Havens. Journeying with her parents would be better than journeying alone.
He almost reached out to contact them but held back. He decided it would be better for them if they learned of it at a closer date. If Celebrían indeed backed out before sailing it would hurt her parents. So he had to keep the secret a few years longer. He only hoped he could manage to do so.

Galadriel frowned when Celeborn blinked and sank back after far speaking. “What is wrong?” She knew the signs in her husband well enough to know something had stunned him beyond belief.
He shook his head and his puzzled eyes settled with hers. “Glorfindel told me Celebrían is planning to return. Our daughter wrote him.” His voice belayed his scepticism, but Galadriel knew and understood it was merely a way to protect his own heart. He shook his head. “I know it is true for I saw the letters through his eyes, but still…”
Galadriel smiled. “When will she return?”
Celeborn shrugged. “I don’t know. Glorfindel wanted to keep it from us but he couldn’t. He needed to tell someone.” He shook his head. “This needs to settle with me.”
Galadriel smiled. “It would be wonderful if she could make it. We shall meet her there.”
Celeborn pulled her close, knowing she needed it as much as he did. “That’s what Glorfindel asked. That we could prepare her for the changes in Elrond. He stated he would mentally prepare Elrond. Though how he will manage without giving this away I do not know.”
They laughed and stared out over the trees, their hearts filled with hope and dread.
Chapter nine The road home
Elrond frowned and walked up to the blond, who was staring out over the trees. He knew it was the direction of the Grey Havens and he was now severely concerned for him. For the last few years Glorfindel had been extremely distracted and had often talked about changes, especially in elves and he become absent-minded.
But what really had Elrond fearing was the sudden disinterest in their usual hunt.
“Should we turn the tables around, old friend?”
Glorfindel jumped a mile high and shook his head, glaring at Elrond. “Why do you succeed where I fail?” He pouted, or pretended to do so. “Not fair.”
He grinned and his eyes became happy. “I am sorry, my friend. I just expect company to be arriving soon, but I have no idea how long the journey will last, so I cannot prepare rooms.”
Elrond cocked his head. “Do you know how many will arrive?”
Glorfindel nodded, but then swiftly shook his head. He had no idea how many elves Celeborn and Galadriel had taken with them. He hoped everything went well. Involuntarily his eyes darted over to the road again and Elrond’s eyes darkened.
“I need to distract you, I see. Shall we go to the patio and tease the twins?”
Glorfindel’s eyes began to sparkle. “With childhood stories, you mean? Aye, we shall.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían sighed, feeling torn. She was happy to see the shore come into view but she had no idea how it would feel, walking that soil again. But her heart called her home and she could no longer resist its call. Her eyes watered at the pain she had caused her family.
Hearing a sigh she cut her musings short and smiled when she saw the two warriors that had begged and volunteered to join her and that made her realise she wasn’t the only one with insecure feelings.
She advanced on them. “Elrond will offer you housing, I am sure. You can search from there.”
The warrior nodded. “I just wished I knew what it is I miss.” He shrugged. “But I trust I will find it, in time.”
She nodded and embraced him. “And you can always come to me.”
The male turned his now smiling eyes to her. “You’re going to pamper me, aren’t you?”
She nodded. “Aye. Pampering you felt extremely good and I shall never stop seeing you as a son, even though I am going to see my own back.”
Those words made her face the other elf and she smiled sadly. “At least I know what to expect. But I am sure Glorfindel would have mentioned a mate or lover if he had one.”
Ecthelion nodded, but the insecurity didn’t leave his eyes. Like her, his heart called him to Imladris, or rather: to Glorfindel, but he couldn’t help fear finding him bound to another. “We both died and were reborn. He might not be for me now.”
She determinedly shook her head. “I do not believe that. But it is good to know the possibility exists. For if it does turn out to be true it will not hurt so much. But do not abandon me. I shall ask my parents to house you instead.”
He smiled and nodded.
They jumped when Lilliath jumped up and screamed. “Lady Celebrían. Your parents. I see your parents. They’ve come to welcome you back.”
Celebrían ran forward, squinting her eyes, but she couldn’t see the faces on the distant shapes, that were only growing slowly, aggravatingly slowly. But she knew her friend was right. Lilliath had the brightest eyes of all and could count each feather of the highest flying bird.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the large white ship was almost docked Celebrían jumped off and ran towards her parents. “Adar! Nana!”
Celeborn and Galadriel followed suit and the tears stopped falling. The moment the boat’s inhabitants came into view their tears had finally been released. The three tightly hugged each other close and remained that way for a long time.
The Galadhrim kept a respectful distance but honoured them by joining together in a fitting song.
When the embrace finally ended Celebrían’s look became one of wonder and she searched amongst the many faces for Glorfindel’s.
Celeborn smiled. “Glorfindel is preparing everything in Imladris and he asked us to meet you.”
Galadriel nodded. “He’s always been extremely pleasant and considerate.” She gasped when she saw the elves accompanying her daughter. “That’s an interesting assembly.”
The younger female smiled and nodded, dragging them towards the others with youthful enthusiasm that surprised them. “This silver-haired male is Atheron, a healer and he has always admired Elrond. I tell you, the questions he’s asked me…” She rolled her eyes to stress her point.
Celeborn held his daughter close and exchanged a look with his wife. Their daughter’s eyes were bright, shining and filled with light again. Valinor had really healed her. Though deep down they both feared the road, sole reason for their rather large escort. They knew they could do with at least half of them, but felt it would give her some security.
Meanwhile Celebrían continued talking, though chattering was more like it. “This is Lilliath, my maiden friend and the reason I didn’t go insane. She’s been a pillar to me and stopped me from backing out. She helped me write and read the letters.”
She now pointed to the other two. “And those are my personal guards, they wanted to join me. Leloth came to search for something and I consider him my son. I like mothering and pampering him. And that’s Ecthelion. He came for Glorfindel but fears to find him bound.”
Galadriel shook her head, her eyes sparkling. “It seems our daughter had gotten a new mouth, Meleth. It doesn’t seem to stop.” She made sure to show she was kidding and not making a serious comment.
She walked forward and welcomed them all to these shores.
While talking she used her powers to see what they were about and she liked what she saw.
Desire to learn and adoration in the healer; Elrond would find much joy in speaking to him.
Support and deep affections in Lilliath. She allowed herself a smile and mentally reached out. `Do not attack Elrond straight away. Give him time to adjust.` She sensed the laughter as answer and moved to the next.
Ecthelion lowered his eyes but she sensed all his emotions. `Be at peace. He is unbound and in love with you still. But I do want to caution you to set a slow pace. You will need to get to know each other all over again. Do not jump his bones but court him again.`
She smiled warmly and now settled on the last. Her eyes widened when she saw the images that were locked away from himself. /A vala removed his memory and prevents him from remembering? Why?/ She knew it was the source for his unease and the direct trigger of this search and she gave into temptation and curiosity by taking a look. Her eyes widened and she swiftly pulled back, gasping in shock.
Celeborn caught her before she could fall. “Driel?”
She smiled at him and shook her head to clear it. “Not now.”
She smiled at her daughter and nodded. “Do you want to stay here for a while or should we start moving right away?”
She leaned in, liking to feel their arms and support again, and was indecisive.
Lilliath smiled. “It would be best to get moving. No use in delaying this. I am sure this town’s lord will understand.”
Celeborn nodded. “Of course Cirdan will understand. Let us go then. We shall keep a light pace. Do you all know how to control a horse?”
The healer and Lilliath blushed and shook their heads, while the two warriors grinned. “I think we remember how to.”
Celeborn nodded. “All right. We’ll manage.” He started moving about his men and ordering and preparing everything.
Celebrían looked on and smiled warmly. “That’s how I remember him. In full control.”
Galadriel smiled and kept her close. “The times he didn’t are few indeed. And even then he never showed it. But I do remember some occasions…”
Seeing her daughter look with questioning eyes she smiled warmly. “When I was pregnant with you. He was feeling utterly useless and didn’t really like that experience. The second time was when you left; we both broke apart. And the third time was when Glorfindel first told us you had plans to return. But it didn’t compare to when I was pregnant.” She went into telling a few tales to brighten her daughter and was pleased it worked. She had seen the look darken in guilt, but figured it would take time for that pain to heal as well.
Celeborn swiftly returned to their side. “Been talking about me?”
Celebrían nodded and leaned forward, needing his presence. Suddenly she felt her eyes sting with tears and as her father tightened his embrace her happy tears came forth.
Lilliath smiled warmly and came to stand next to Galadriel. “She’s very strong.”
Galadriel nodded. “I know. But still… she couldn’t have made it without Valinor or you.” She had seen what the other had done and she would always be grateful.
Lilliath nodded, but her eyes narrowed. “But it was love from here that aided her most. I could sense it. It never altered or dimmed.”
Galadriel smiled. “He never stopped loving her.”
She sighed, sadly. “But he has changed. They both have. We can only hope they are still compatible.”
Galadriel’s smile turned mysterious as she knew they would be.
“Glorfindel?”
The seneschal turned and smiled at the counsellor. “Erestor? What is it?”
Erestor shrugged and came closer. “You tell me. Elrond is worried about you and I must confess I start to share it. Your thoughts wander too much and you stare towards the sea often.”
Glorfindel smiled. “Don’t worry. I do not feel the call. Come.”
He walked to his rooms and emptied his trunk.
Erestor stared at his actions with wide eyes and they only widened further when Glorfindel removed the bottom.
The seneschal smiled at his dumbfound expression. “A hidden compartment, Erestor. Here, read.”
Erestor sat down and he gasped the second he saw the letters. He instantly recognized her hand and he looked up in wonder, but Glorfindel merely indicated he should read.
After he was finished he swallowed, still a bit shaky. But now he understood Glorfindel’s mood. “We shall have to prepare rooms.” He shook his head. “At least now I understand all those strange subjects you talked to Elrond about.”
He sat down and grasped Glorfindel’s hand. “It makes you miss him more, doesn’t it?”
Glorfindel nodded, allowing his tears to fall. “Elrond is about to get his love back and I am happy for them but…” He smiled when Erestor pulled him closer and forced him to lay down on his bed.
Erestor waited until Glorfindel was asleep before standing up. He gently tugged him in and restored the trunk to its original state. /I wonder why she wrote you, meldir, instead of me. Perhaps Ecthelion is travelling with her. I shall have some scouts search the road and find out./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled lazily at his love, who was patiently working through today’s load of papers. He completely ignored his father, but Elrond didn’t seem to mind.
The old Peredhel stood and stretched himself. “I am feeling old, Erestor. I’m starting to feel my muscles.”
Erestor laughed and looked up. “Why don’t you go for a walk? Elrohir can help me.” He ignored the disapproving groan behind him and waved Elrond out.
Once he was sure Elrond was away he spoke to Elrohir. “Really, Ro, your father needs some time away from this room.” He resettled his attention on the papers and smiled when Elrohir returned to his former position after grabbing some papers. “I am sure the table is more comfortable.”
Elrohir nodded. “To be sure, but it doesn’t offer me this great view. I love watching you.” He could see the blush Erestor was trying to fight and sighed regretfully, making a real show out of it. “And now I have to concentrate on this… this… road maintenance?” He shivered. “Well, as long as it shows me where you are I don’t mind. Let’s see…”
At some point Erestor released a growl. “Be silent! If you cannot help me in silence then leave, but I can already tell you there will be no chance for a walk if this isn’t finished.”
Elrohir pouted and came to sit at his father’s desk. “Sorry. But this is boring. Can I do something else? Balance books? Copy or store things?”
Erestor looked at him and smiled. He pointed to a bookcase. “Those shelves there are a complete mess but we just don’t have the time to clean them.”
Elrohir’s eyes twinkled. That he didn’t mind. Who knew what he might find. He had once found a beautiful necklace when he was cleaning the kitchen. He nodded. “And everything needs to be organized as well, or does it need to remain that messy?”
Erestor smiled and shook his head. “Nay, please put everything in order. There’s a pile of correspondence, and those green covers are for the finances but as you see everything is just shoved inside.”
Elrohir nodded. “I’ll do that. Why didn’t you ask for it before? I mean, you and adar must have neglected it for months.”
Erestor smiled. “You think that’s bad? Look at the closed cabinets. They’re worse, but contain old material, so we really would appreciate if you start on this one.”
Elrohir nodded and quickly made a start.
After some hours a message for Erestor arrived and after reading it the counsellor jumped up and twirled a startled Elrohir around. “Send word to your twin; tell him to come back.” He jumped again, feeling giddy. “This is so great.” He dashed off, taking the message along and leaving a puzzled Elrohir behind.
Chapter ten The arrival
Elrohir yelped when his sister suddenly dragged him along, ruthlessly. She came to a sudden stop and he banged into her. “Arwen! What do you want?”
She merely shoved him forward, showing him. “Mind telling me why your lover started staring towards the sea with Glorfindel?” Her voice was on the brink of panic for she already saw her old tutors on a ship to Valinor and it ached her.
Elrohir narrowed his eyes and stepped closer, dragging his sister along. He coughed and smiled when they both jumped up.
Erestor swiftly recovered from the shock and approached his love, embracing him before he planted a kiss on Arwen’s cheek, who giggled at the movement, as always. He shook his head. “Sometimes I think the three of you will never grow up but then I see your eyes and I am forced to believe it.”
Glorfindel grinned and cocked his head. “Erestor and I were just discussing how concerned we are about you, little Arwen. Does being a queen not hamper with your fighting skills?”
She smiled and shrugged. “A little. The people there don’t see women fight. A female soldier is unheard of. Aragorn tries to change their views but it will take time. But he spars with me regularly.”
Glorfindel nodded. “Still, I think we should spar to see if you haven’t lost your skills. Tomorrow?”
She shook her head. “How about right now? Meet you at the practising area in five minutes. Are you two coming?”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay. Erestor has to work through some correspondence and I have more shelves to clean. Perhaps I’ll send adar you way.”
Erestor jumped up startled and dragged Elrohir along. “He must be worrying. Come on.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían pulled back and smiled warmly. “Oh, Elrohir. I am so happy to see joy in your eyes. Every time word of your life reached me, it helped me heal.”
His eyes widened and he blinked.
Elrond smiled. “I hope they didn’t tell you everything?”
She grinned. “No, there’s still some stuff I need to find out myself, so guide me or I will drown. Where’s Elladan?” She stood and looked around, searching for him. Her gaze rested on Arwen and she sucked in her breath. “Arwen?”
Elrond nodded and signalled for his daughter to approach, which she swiftly did. Before she knew it Celebrían had her smothered in an embrace. “Oh, my Arwen, my daughter. I feel so guilty, forcing you to grow up without even knowing me.” She stepped back and took her in, smiling. “My loved ones did a good job.”
Arwen blushed, happy with the praise at both her door and that of the others. She smiled. “I never saw you or met you before today but I feel I know you. Ata’da and nona told me so much and adar and my brothers too… I am looking forward to finally spending time with you.”
Celebrían nodded. “As do I, my daughter.”
Arwen looked at her father and he nodded.
He could see her insecurity and smiled warmly, speaking the words himself. “Meleth, even though she is the youngest, she is wed. Estel here is her mate.”
Aragorn blushed and glared at Elrond. “You know I hate that word. Husband, I am her husband.” He stepped forward and bowed. “It is a honour to make your acquaintance, my lady.” He noticed she wasn’t surprised at the news nor stunned he was mortal.
She smiled. “I know, I saw it in my dreams. Lorien gave me them to keep me balanced.”
She hugged her daughter again and leaned against Elrond, feeling tired. He instantly supported her.
They were happy, being together again, being one. Even though it might take some time to breach the years, and even more so with the children, but their love would remain the same, if not strengthen.
He guided her inside, feeling unsure on the sleeping arrangements.
She closed her eyes. “I do not desire to sleep apart, my love. But please give us time before…”
He nodded and gave her all the support she needed. “I am glad to have you back.”
“Likewise, my husband.” She stopped and cocked her head. “I still have your ring.” She uncovered a necklace on which it hang.
He grinned and did the same. “We shall put them back to the place they belong, but first you need your rest.” He couldn’t stop himself and lifted her, twirling her around. “My brave, strong Celebrían.”
She laughed and enjoyed it. From the corner of her eye she could see the happy smiles of her parents who had taken Elrohir under their wing.
The only ones left on the yard where Glorfindel and Ecthelion, who was being held close by the other, almost to the point of choking. “Glorfindel, if I promise not to disappear will you let me breathe?”
The blond blushed and hastily loosened his hold. His eyes were wet with tears, still flowing freely, and filled with disbelief and extreme happiness. Unable to express himself he lifted him and twirled him around. “You’re back! I’ve got you back!”
Ecthelion laughed and nodded. “Aye. I am back. But don’t you think we need to talk and fill each other in first? Perhaps we’re not…” He didn’t finished, not willing to risk the words becoming reality.
Glorfindel nodded and steered the other to the gardens. “I’ll show you Imladris in the meantime.” He knew his hold on the other was crushing but he did not care. Now that he finally had his love back he wasn’t going to give him up. And he realised Ecthelion was right: there was a chance they could no longer fill each other the way they had, but he would do anything to assure it would be that again.
Ecthelion sensed and closed his eyes, realising Galadriel’s warning was right. But that also meant he had this one night to discover the truth for he knew that after that Glorfindel would alter himself to adapt to him and that he did not want. /Court him again./
His eyes glistened and he laughed. “You know what? I find myself hoping we are not as compatible anymore, for then we get to court each other again. You know…”
Glorfindel nodded. “Getting to know each other once more. Our new preferences and distastes and our new faults. Are you willing to risk it?”
Ecthelion nodded. “Aye. I am. We should go slowly and start all over again, Glorfindel. So tell me, what position do you hold here?” Slowly he drew Glorfindel into telling him everything about Imladris and his little family.
Chapter eleven An unexpected meeting
Elrohir laughed and turned the corridor. “Really, Lilliath, you are as bad as my sister.”
The female laughed. “I know. Many proclaimed they saw a likeness between myself and lady Arwen.” She smiled when she saw the breakfast hall. “I knew it was grant, but this I never could image.”
Elrohir smiled and pointed out the delicate touches in the artwork.
Elrond smiled warmly and forced his gaze away from his wife. He couldn’t believe how lucky he was. They had talked throughout the night, in bed, resting, but still…
He frowned when he felt her hand tug his robe. She had never done that before. But he knew there would be many more of those little changes in her as he knew he had as well. But neither of them minded.
He turned to look at her and she cocked her head towards Erestor. “What is wrong with him? I don’t remember ever seeing him so furious.”
Elrond frowned and looked, before he laughed. “I think jealous is a better word, melethen. He and Elrohir are together and look…” He cocked towards the entrance where the twin was still talking to Lilliath.
Celebrían grinned and sighed contented, glad there was nothing wrong. “Where’s Glorfindel?” The moment she spoke she heard his voice behind them.
Glorfindel grinned. “I do believe I just…”
Elrond shook his head and signalled him to sit. “Nay, you did not. You’ve been standing there the last five minutes, waiting for Ecthelion.”
Glorfindel released a soft growl and both their lovers looked stunned although Ecthelion soon understood and smiled at the lady. “Glorfindel told me he and Elrond have a sort of contest going where Glorfindel has to successfully sneak up on your husband. And he always fails.”
Elrond frowned. “He -willingly- admitted that?”
Ecthelion shrugged. “I had to wiggle that detail out of him, but aye, he told me. And I think it is good exercise for both of you.”
Celebrían nodded. “Perhaps you should hunt each other now?”
Ecthelion shrugged. “Are we still waiting for someone or can we start? I am famished.”
Glorfindel threw him an angry look to which Elrond grinned. “At ease, Findy. And aye, we have to wait for Elrohir and Lilliath to take their seats. Tell me more about the healer, melme.” His eyes widened and he looked at Ecthelion again, having just remembered something. “Wasn’t there another warrior in your party?”
Ecthelion nodded. “Aye. I have no idea where he is. Erestor spoke to him last, perhaps he knows.”
He turned and coughed. “Counsellor Erestor?”
Erestor’s startled look settled on him and he smiled. “Do you perhaps know if our companion is joining us?”
Erestor shook his head. “He did not mention anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Leloth’s feet carried him to the kitchen.”
Elrond and Glorfindel both spat out their drinks and goggled at Erestor who snorted. “Or maybe not.” They followed his eyes and saw the elf approaching them.
Leloth smiled and sat down next to Ecthelion. “Imladris is truly beautiful, isn’t it?”
Ecthelion nodded. “Aye. We shall enjoy living here. Where’s…”
Leloth laughed, a laugh the others recognized and Elrond even noticed Elrohir’s wide eyes. “In the healing wing, about to drive the healers crazy. You know him.” He looked around. “That statue is new.”
Elrond nodded. “Aye, it is. We’ve erected it the fall three years ago.”
Celebrían narrowed her eyes before she gasped and pulled Elrond away. The Peredhel briefly yelped but allowed it. She shook her head, still coming to terms with the revelation. “How come you know him? He has just reached his maturity and this is his first time he’s sailed.”
Elrond widened his eyes. “What? But he’s Leloth! Elladan’s lover! I know he is.” He gasped and staggered backwards. “He’s reborn.” He shook his head. “But how is that possible? What is going on?”
He walked back to his seat and smiled at Elrohir, signalling him closer. “Be careful. Apparently he’s a reborn. It is natural for him to recognize things, but do not jump ahead.”
Elrohir widened his eyes. “But how did he die? After he abandoned Elladan, I mean?”
Elrond shrugged. He really didn’t know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir was glad the swift walk was over and he rubbed his sore wrist now that Erestor had released him. The second breakfast was over Erestor had grabbed him before he could continue showing the house to Lilliath.
He shook his head. “What is wrong? Erestor?”
The counsellor turned to him and his eyes were still flaming. “Stay away from her!”
Elrohir’s eyes widened and he stared at the counsellor in disbelief. He felt a tantrum coming but swallowed to calm himself. It seemed Erestor was having one for the both of them already. But then realisation dawned and he smiled, touched the other loved him enough to become this jealous.. “I was merely being polite, Erestor. She’s nana’s best friend and can tell me about the time I had to miss her.” His eyes turned loving. “Were you jealous?”
He grinned and embraced his mate, but Erestor moved out of it, glaring at him, his arms crossed before the chest. “She’s all over you and I don’t wish to share you. Stay away from her!” Elrohir rolled his eyes but he jumped back frightened when Erestor growled. “I mean it! You are my mate and I will not stand by while another tries to steal you.”
Elrohir now glared as well. “Pipe down. No one can steal me, so you just calm down. You will have to share me with my family and their friends, as I will have to share you with them. And did you mean that?”
He grinned when Erestor’s eyes widened and he stuttered instead of yelling at him again. Elrohir stepped closer and caressed his face. “I am your mate?”
Erestor blushed and nodded. “If you’ll keep me, that is.”
Elrohir laughed and threw himself at his beloved. “Of course I’ll keep you. Just try to get rid of me and you’ll see how sticky I am. Your mate… I’m Erestor’s mate…” His voice had turned loving and dreaming and he leaned in closer, claiming the other’s lips. “Why don’t you mark me, show her I am taken.”
Erestor’s eyes darkened and he steered his love to the couch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían smiled at her sleeping husband and carefully left the bed. Even though it was the middle of the day Elrond was sound asleep, needing it to restore his energy. She didn’t need the rest and there was something she needed to find out and the longer she waited the more it ate at her. /Tonight I will make sure you do naught but laugh, my love./
She placed her bracelet on her pillow to comfort him should he wake up before she returned. She didn’t want to bring another fearful attack on him. When Elrond had woken alone because she had left the bed early he had panicked and had failed to notice her standing on the balcony, gazing over the lands.
She moved swiftly through the corridors and smiled when she found the elves she needed. “Tonight we feast, and you will attend. Tomorrow Elrond will talk to you.”
The healer practically beamed with joy and nodded. “Do I have to attend?”
She nodded. “Aye. Elrond is very strict in those things and he’s liable to call of the meeting should you dishonour him by not showing.”
He turned red and shook his head. “I’ll be there, I’ll be there. I would never disgrace him. Ever.”
She shook her head and her eyes twinkled as he ran away, mumbling something about shopping for robes.
She turned to the laughing elf. “And you? Will you come or do I need to threaten you as well?”
Leloth smiled warmly. “I would love to see an Imladrian feast. But I cannot help but be concerned. So many things seem familiar, like I’ve seen them before.”
She smiled and walked him outside. “Weren’t you looking for your home? Perhaps you’ve already found it and need not search anymore?”
He cocked his head and smiled, liking that thought. “I don’t know. It seems right and it is definitely beautiful, but…” He faltered and lowered his head, searching for the right words. After a while he shrugged. “I don’t know. Something still seems to be missing.”
She embraced him and continued walking until they stood on top of the stairs leading to the yard. “Do you know Elrond had this stairs build especially for decorum so everybody has to look up? Which is why he hardly uses them.”
Leloth nodded. “I remember them entered the yard from between the pillars. There are many staircases in the building.”
She nodded. “Aye. Too many. I often got lost in my first month here. One night I was too tired to notice my wrong turns and that the corridor didn’t match.” She snickered and shook her head.
He looked at her expectantly.
She didn’t disappoint him. “I crept into bed beside Erestor. You should have heard his scream when I nuzzled him and told him, whom at the time I still thought to be Elrond, he smelled weird.”
They both laughed and sat down on the stairs.
“It is a beautiful view. Did Elrond understand?”
Celebrían nodded. “Oh yes, though Erestor acted jittery around me for months.” She looked out and smiled, seeing Elladan ride into the stables. Her heart thundered madly. “My last child returns. I hope he can handle it.”
She looked at him. “Stay with me?”
Leloth nodded. “Of course.” He smiled. “You told me that story on purpose, didn’t you? Because I know my way around so well already when everyone else gets lost.”
She shrugged. “It is worth considering, but only time will tell.” She grasped his hand as she descended, not wanted to miss her son as he would undoubtedly enter the house at the lower level.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan yawned when he left the stables. He had kept a gruelling pace to come home swift and now that he was here he wondered why Elrohir had told him Erestor demanded his immediate return. Everything looked the same.
He swiftly walked to the stairs as they would provide the shortest walk to the study, where he hoped to find Erestor. After reaching it he widened his eyes seeing two elves walk his way.
He felt his heart pound madly in his chest and his soul stirred him, pulling him closer. “Nay… this cannot be!” His knees gave way and he heard someone screaming his name. He felt the stairs hit him as he rolled down, but it was like he wasn’t there.
Time had stopped.
Hands were touching him and he felt his body heat up. His mind and mouth kept repeating his words. “It cannot be.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celebrían’s scream had alerted Glorfindel and Ecthelion who had been walking the nearby gardens. When they arrived they were presented a sight they hadn’t been prepared for.
Celebrían and Leloth were kneeling besides Elladan’s unconscious body. The lady looked up and the pleading in her eyes took them aback.
Ecthelion was the swiftest to come round. “Fetch Lord Elrond, Glor. We’ll take him to the healing wing.” He had intentionally used a commanding tone, knowing it would reach the warrior. It worked and Glorfindel rushed away after throwing his lady a hopeful look.
Ecthelion smiled and approached. He frowned when he heard the mumblings. “He must be in some sort of shock?”
Leloth nodded and locked eyes with him. The depth and intensity took him aback and he sat back, stunned by it. The other smiled. “I guess seeing the two of us was too much for him. But I had no idea. But I know now. Oh, Elladan.” He carefully lifted Elladan. “Ecthelion, fetch Elrohir. His rooms are in the west wing.”
Celebrían shook her head. “Try Erestor’s study first.”
Leloth frowned, but then shrugged. “Who knows how many years passed since Mandos took me back.”
The words had been but a ghost of a whisper but Celebrían heard them none the less and suddenly she understood. But she would hold her suspicions to herself. First they had to concentrate on her eldest son. “Arwen and Aragorn. They must come too.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond flared up when his door was swung open. The first thing he realised was being alone. Where was Celebrían? It hadn’t been a dream, had it? Tonight was the feast. Or was it a dream and was there no feast? Was he finally losing it?
The second realisation was being dragged out of bed and he felt grateful he was still dressed.
Then Glorfindel’s voice seeped into his mind as well as the seneschal’s words, though he only heard the last part. /Healing wing? Someone’s injured! But how, who, why, where…/
The healer in him took control and he sped up, easily holding up. “Tell me again, Glorfindel. I had just woken up; you know I am not at my best then.”
Glorfindel nodded and his eyes were filled with pain. “It’s Elladan. I don’t know what happened. Celebrían’s scream reached us and we found them hovering above his body.” He flung open the door that connected the healing wing to the rest of the house and rushed inside.
The healer from Valinor was already waiting for them. “Follow me, my lord. And it’s all right. He’ll be fine.” He didn’t force Elrond to slow his pace and stepped aside to let him enter the room.
Elrond stopped in his tracks when he saw Elladan on the bed, Celebrían silently holding his hand. But what stunned him more was the presence of another elf, slumped in the furthest chair, his entire posture showing guilt. /You are Leloth, there’s no doubt about it./
He approached his wife and son, his eyes asking the questions.
Celebrían smiled. “Elladan arrived while we were sitting on the staircase, admiring the view. Seeing us he collapsed. He keeps repeating these words, Elrond. I do not understand.”
Elrond sat down and shrugged. He was at a loss as well. He knew Elladan had to be shocked, but that went for all of them.
Atheron stepped up to them and smiled. “I think I know what has happened. But it is best to discuss that in private.” His eyes pierced into the warrior and Elrond widened his eyes when Leloth stood and walked outside where he waited for them to join him.
Celebrían stood, leaning on her Peredhel, and smiled. “He will stun you many times to come. And you him.” A smile lay on her face as she thought about it.
Elrond nodded and walked outside, where Elrohir and Arwen came running. At a calmer pace Aragorn and Erestor followed. Ecthelion was there as well. Elrond smiled and waved him closer. He didn’t want them anywhere else at the moment.
He looked at the healer. “Atheron, isn’t it?”
The healer nodded. “Aye.”
Elrond smiled. “This is more than just a shock, isn’t it?”
The healer cocked his head from side to side. “Not really. He was indeed severely shocked, being unprepared for seeing them back. It is too sudden for him to really believe it. He’s in a sort of sleep. His mouth and mind keep speaking because of the shock, but I assure you when he wakes he will be normal and like before. He will know everything he did, everything up to the point when he saw them.”
Elrond pulled his wife closer, sensing her need. “What do you suggest? Seeing them when he recovers might cause a relapse.”
The healer nodded. “Aye. I advice both Leloth and Lady Celebrían not to come near him for the time being. I know it is hard, but it really is best if he senses only those he expects to sense.”
Elrohir nodded. “Adar and me.”
The healer rubbed his nose. “Or anyone else that he has know for a long time.”
Glorfindel cocked his head. “We should stay away. I spend so much time with Ecthelion our scents mingle.”
Atheron smiled warmly. “It is possible for you to go, and even for Ecthelion or myself to sit at his side. But it would not be best, since we are from Valinor.”
He looked at Elrond. “I think it best that only you, your children and counsellor Erestor sit with him. And when he comes round it is imperative he is told about our arrival. Do not shield him from the knowledge, but do not spring it on him either.”
Elrohir nodded. “I think Erestor is the best one for that.”
Erestor blushed but nodded. “If you think. But you will want to stay as well, don’t you?”
Elrohir nodded. “Aye, but I would blurt out everything.”
His eyes were settled on Leloth and many emotions were at war with him.
Erestor squished his shoulders. “Do not be angry with him. I am sure soon we will learn his tale.”
Leloth stood and approached. “Lord Elrond. I fear it is my fault.”
Elrond shook his head and stared into his eyes. “None of it is your fault. You were unaware and seeing only Celebrían would have triggered the same reaction. He’s come to terms with it and has gotten used to not having her around.”
Leloth smiled. “Thank you.” He bit his lip and sighed. “I’d better do this now.” He turned and looked at Erestor and Glorfindel. “You were right, you know.” He saw he had surprised them but he didn’t allow them to ask questions, preferring to tell it his way. He just didn’t know where to start.
Ecthelion understood and decided to help him out. “You lived in Gondolin as one of Turgon’s most trusted men.”
Glorfindel grinned. “I knew it. I was right. That was you. You died defending the city.”
Leloth smiled. “As did you two and many more.”
He sat down on the floor. “Do you remember the mirrors? Mandos’ mirrors?”
Celebrían released a little scream. “You found out the way they work? He said hardly any does.”
Leloth grinned. “Aye, I know. But I did. Warmth and pleasure came from them and I watched the world through them. But one mirror became the most important one; the one showing me Imladris.”
Erestor cocked his head. “Why?” He wondered why the other was allowed to remember so much of Mandos’ Halls when Glorfindel didn’t and it seemed Ecthelion didn’t either.
Leloth smiled. “No reason at first but then the twins were born and I just loved seeing them grow up. It was easy to talk to you as if you could hear. I never could do that with the other mirrors.”
Celebrían placed her hand on his shoulder, finally understanding. “You fell in love with him.” Her eyes shone with happiness.
Leloth nodded. “Aye. It hurt to see him suffer after…” He faltered, not sure he could continue.
Celebrían smiled. “The attack and my departure.” Her voice was sad and her other hand reached for Elrond’s, needing confirmation he forgave her. He instantly held it tight, placing it to his heart.
Erestor shook his head. “But you were so ancient when you were here.”
Suddenly Elrond’s eyes widened and he gasped. “And yet so young, as if everything was new or had to be rediscovered.”
Leloth nodded. “One day Mandos himself came to me and made a bargain. He would give me life in Imladris for three years. I could use that time to help Elladan heal.”
Elrond narrowed his eyes. “And the catch?”
Leloth shrugged. “He had to voice his love.”
He yelped when he was hit and flung across the floor. Celebrían immediately stood before him, preventing Elrohir from hitting him again. “Stop it! Let him finish.”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nana, you have no idea how much pain he has caused Elladan.”
Leloth stood and smiled at the lady before facing Elrohir head on. “He could not speak it and you know it. Forcing him to do so would have harmed him forever, shutting him even more. I loved him enough to let him go.”
Elrohir snorted. “You don’t know what he went through. O, wait, you do. You saw!”
Leloth shook his head. “Nay. I couldn’t watch anymore. It was too painful and I was reborn shortly after.”
When Elrohir was about to hit the other again he staggered back, his cheek red where Celebrían just hit -him-. “You are a grown elf, Elrohir. Act like it. And if you for one second think what happened didn’t hurt Leloth I don’t think I want to call you my son anymore.” Her voice was sharp.
Before any could speak the door banged to the wall and Celeborn and Galadriel came running. “Elrond! Celebrían! How dare you not inform us!” Rage was in their eyes and the others actually jumped back in fear.
Leloth jumped forward to protect his friends. “I’ve send a healer. Do not blame them. Elladan will be fine.”
The rulers of the golden wood calmed down sufficiently and Celeborn went inside while Galadriel remained with the others.
She cocked her head. “Your cheek is red, Elrohir.”
The twin rubbed it. It still stung. “You’ve been working out, nana. I don’t remember your spankings being this hard.”
She smiled. “You were young. I held back. Will you prevent your twin’s happiness or rejoice it instead?”
He didn’t know what to do and looked at Erestor for guidance.
The counsellor had debated it within himself and smiled. “Your mother and Ecthelion both seem to know Leloth very well and looking in his eyes I see the same elf I saw before. Soon they’ll be were they left off, the only difference being Elladan’s often pronounced love.”
Leloth looked up with joyful eyes. “He finally healed?” His voice was loving and warm and in that moment they all realised the truth. Leloth had been sent to force Elladan to heal.
Elrond rubbed his eyes, fearing he would be a mental wrack tonight. “So, you want your old job back or what?”
Leloth grinned. “Aye, but I would love to continue sparring and training.”
Glorfindel nodded. “Become one of the teachers then. And you can join Elladan’s patrols.”
Ecthelion laughed and shook his head. “Do you really think that’s wise?”
They laughed when Glorfindel caught the underlying meaning and blushed. “You are right. It is not.”
Celebrían pulled Leloth close, needing to mother him now, for she could understand his confusing emotions. She smiled at her daughter even as she started rearranging Leloth’s cloak. “Arwen, do you wish to cancel our…”
Arwen instantly shook her head. “Nay. I want to go to the market and I would like for Leloth to join us. I have to get to know you too.”
Leloth looked at Celebrían and she smiled and nodded. “Come, my child. Let us away and visit the market.”
Elrond was tempted to stop them from leaving but realised he couldn’t. “Perhaps Ecthelion wants to see it as well?”
Arwen turned and was about to scold him but she held her words when her mother placed a hand on her shoulder, leaning in to whisper. She knew how worried Elrond was.
Celeborn shook his head. “In the past she would have fought you on this, Elrond.”
The Peredhel nodded. “I know. She’s changed, but so have I. It will take a while before I can let her wander off alone.”
Aragorn hit him on the back. “Worry about Elladan now. Come, let Erestor sit with him while we prepare for tonight. And I shall personally help Elladan into his outfit.”
Elrohir turned and glared. “But that’s my job.”
Aragorn shrugged. “Fine, than I’ll help Erestor.” He ran away when Elrohir released a scream and raced after him.
Elrond shook his head. “Why do they always have to fight?” He smiled. “That reminds me I haven’t yet told her about Aragorn’s life here.”
Erestor frowned. “I hope you’re not calling me a toy?”
Elrond rubbed his nose. “We knows what my son will do to you?” He laughed and pushed him inside. “I shall trust your judgement.”
Chapter twelve the feast
Elladan groaned when he came round and looked around with an extremely comical expression on his face that seriously tested Erestor’s facial muscles.
“How are you feeling, Elladan?”
The twin looked at him and smiled, shaking his head. “Where’s adar? Shouldn’t he be here, muttering something about tripping and falling down stairs?”
Erestor grinned and nodded. “He would, but he’s preoccupied at the moment, and I don’t think you regret that.”
The twin laughed and shook his head. “Nay, not at all. What’s so important to keep him from my side?” He flared up. “Does it have anything to do with your urgent request for me to return?”
Fear shone from his eyes and Erestor hurried to sooth him. “Yes, but no because there is danger, Elladan. I assure you there is not. Calm yourself and listen.”
Elladan nodded and sat down.
Erestor swallowed, still wondering if his plan was the best way to proceed. Elladan was the most unpredictable Peredhel, so things could go awfully wrong. He sighed. “First of all, there’s a feast this eve and you should be present.”
Elladan’s eyes shone. “A feast? In who’s honour?”
Erestor smiled, pleased with this question. “In honour of the five latest inhabitants of Imladris. Elrond was to properly welcome them home.”
Elladan raised an eyebrow. He’s worked years to be able to do it. “Home? From where?”
Erestor smiled warmly and encouragingly. “I know it sounds crazy and absolutely unbelievable, but they hail from Valinor and travelled back to these lands.”
Elladan sat back shocked. /Valinor…/ The word stabbed his heart but he soon realised these elves were able to give him information about his mother and his lover.
He smiled. “Who? How many? Did they know nana or Leloth?”
Erestor smiled. This was going better than planned. “Five in total. One is a healer, Atheron. He’s really a piece of work, Elladan. He admires your father and has come here especially for him, to exchange knowledge and such. I am sure the two of them will drive each other insane.”
He was glad the words brought a smile to Elladan’s eyes and he tapped his second finger. “Then there’s Lilliath, who will soon become a permanent member of the Peredhil household. She reminds me of all of you, Elladan. She came to support her best friend and her family.”
He rubbed his nose. “And there a two warriors, one of them is called Ecthelion.” He grinned at Elladan’s reaction and nodded. “Aye, the very same, Elladan. Glorfindel and he are taking it slow, which is Galadriel’s own advice, but they spend most their time together. You’ll like him.”
Elladan leaned back and smiled. He felt like jumping about, so happy was he for Glorfindel. “No wonder he’s been staring towards the havens a lot lately. He knew he was coming.”
Erestor shook his head, but didn’t speak, allowing Elladan to voice his question in his own time.
The twin didn’t disappoint him. “Erestor? What does grandmother have to do with this?”
Erestor pulled his chair closer. “Well, Galadriel and Celeborn escorted these five elves here, Elladan. So be prepared to be hugged by them tonight. They will join this feast, as will the soldiers that escorted them.”
Elladan smiled. “I haven’t seen them for so long.” He smiled and warmed, just knowing he would see them again warmed him. Suddenly his eyes widened. “Why didn’t Glorfindel go to the Havens himself, Erestor? I am sure adar would have kicked him there. Why were my grandparents waiting there?” It didn’t make sense.
Erestor smiled and grabbed Elladan’s hand. “Elladan, I need you to listen carefully now.” He sighed and knew he had to tell the whole tale before breaking the news. “Years ago Glorfindel received a message from Valinor. He wrote back and a correspondence about a journey here began.”
Elladan smiled. “Then why are they taking it slow? If they wrote each other…”
Erestor shook his head and squished Elladan’s hands. “He did not write to Ecthelion. He knew there would be five elves arriving but he only knew the identity of one.” He nodded. “Aye, the one that wrote him and nay, it wasn’t Glorfindel.”
He remained silent, allowing Elladan to process the information and perhaps draw a conclusion. Seeing the eyes widen in shock and disbelief, but shine with hope, he knew the twin had reached it. He nodded. “Aye. Lady Celebrían returned yesterday. Your mother is home.”
Elladan gasped and he was glad he was sitting down. He looked at Erestor for confirmation and the counsellor nodded, squishing his hands once more. “You will see her tonight. And rest assured: they still love each other and are still compatible. But you cannot see her now, Elladan. She’s being dragged across the market by Arwen.”
Elladan laughed. “Poor nana. She’ll want to return tomorrow, after a day with Arwen.”
Erestor was pleasantly surprised. This he hadn’t expected. He shook his head, berating himself. Hadn’t he already established this twin was the most unpredictable Peredhel?
He stood and supported Elladan. “The feast is in a few hours. You should get ready: soak in your tub and suffer Aragorn assisting you. He’s offered earlier.”
Elladan grinned, knowing precisely what the counsellor meant. “He can tell me more about nana. This Lilliath is her lady in waiting then?”
Erestor shook his head. “Nay, her closest friend.” He could see the doubt and disbelief in Elladan’s eyes, but he understood. Until he saw it with his own eyes, he wouldn’t believe it. It was his way to protect his heart. But at least this time he would be mentally and emotionally prepared when seeing her.
He held Elladan back when the twin wanted to leave. “There’s one more thing I need to tell you.”
Elladan cocked his head. “What?” What more could Erestor have possibly to tell him?
The counsellor sighed. “Your mother has sort of adopted the other warrior that accompanied her. He’s just reached his maturity but his soul is ancient.”
Elladan smiled. “Glorfindel and Ecthelion should be able to offer support. They are reborn elves as well. So, a new brother?”
Erestor shook his head. “To your siblings perhaps, but not to you.” He didn’t elaborate and ignored Elladan’s frown at his cryptic words. He had just decided against revealing the other’s name, not wanting to jinx it. “Go to your room and prepare. I shall see you at the feast.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond smiled when he saw his wife enter their room. He was amazed at how easily he had accepted the changes in his life. He shook his head when he saw the countless bags she now placed on the bed. “Do I have any money left?”
She laughed and flung herself at him. “Don’t be so grumpy. It was so pleasing and reviving and half of this belongs to our daughter.”
Elrond held her close and frowned. “Why do you carry Arwen’s things?”
She smiled and sniffed, inhaling his scent. “Because she doesn’t want Aragorn to see it yet.”
Elrond walked backwards to the reclining chair, already having discovered her joy at sitting in it, preferably on his lap. When she inhaled his scent again after settling on his legs he shook his head. “Dare I ask why you are smelling me all the time?”
She nodded and locked their eyes. “Everything smells different here. Everything has its own unique scent and texture. Though Valinor is beautiful it lacks our variety and I always longer to have it back. I am so sorry I took me so long to find the courage.”
Elrond shook his head and kissed her forehead. “Don’t be. You are here now. That is all that matters. But we cannot stay like this for long. You need to change for the feast. I simply refuse to dance with you as you are.”
She sighed and snuggled closer. “Still bribing people I see.” She wetted her lips. “But you’ve only bribed me to change clothes, not to vacate this chair.”
Elrond smiled and twirled her hair around his fingers. He had greatly missed their banters. “Ah, but you will have to leave it in order to change.”
She nodded. “True, but there’s no reason why I shouldn’t sit back in it, remain here the entire evening. Perhaps I am too tired?”
Elrond laughed and cocked his head. “And what, my lovely lady, would be your price?” He could read her answer in her eyes and nodded, leaning in closer to claim her lips for the first time she’s returned to him.
The kiss was long, slow and filled with love, trust and happiness.
She sighed. “I hope Glorfindel and Ecthelion have as much luck as we do.”
Elrond nodded. “The Valar wouldn’t have set it in motion only to ruin the outcome. Come, meleth. We need to get moving.”
Aragorn growled. “Stop dallying and start walking normally! Do you want adar to see if you are fine?”
Elladan’s face became horrified and practically ran through the corridors.
Aragorn smiled, pleased the ploy had worked. Now to make sure he kept up and prevent Elladan any escapes.
Lilliath smiled, leaning in closer. “Stop fidgeting and tell me something about Erestor.”
Leloth grinned and his eyes had started twinkling. “He’s taken, meldir. And he thinks you’re after his mate.” He laughed and shook his head. “I am glad to be back. I missed it.”
The hall went quiet as Elrond and his wife entered.
The Peredhel smiled. “As you see the rumours aren’t just mean rumours and I also haven’t finally lost the last of my marbles. Celebrían has returned to us. Tonight we feast and properly welcome her and our friend home.”
He turned to his wife. “Welcome back, nin-vess.” He kissed her and his eyes shone with happiness.
Elrohir sighed, overcome with romantic feelings. “I hope Adan…”
Erestor pulled him closer and nodded. “Don’t worry. One look at Elrond and he has to believe it. It’ll be well. Let’s dance.”
Elrohir turned his face to him and smiled lovingly. “You want to flaunt me.”
Erestor nodded. “Aye. And?”
Elrohir grinned and nodded. “I like it. And the more people that know you belong to me the better.”
From the entrée Elladan’s gasp sounded through the room.
Aragorn gently pushed him forward.
Celebrían had frozen, fear clearly on her face. She didn’t want him to faint again.
Elrond swiftly rushed forward and embraced his son. “Elladan, are you all right?”
Elladan looked in his eyes and saw the concern for him but what made him smile was the love that lived again. “Nana’s really back.”
Elrond nodded. “Aye, she is. Come.” He laughed when Elladan sprung to life and ran forward.
Celebrían was glad she saw it coming or else Elladan’s jump would have had her falling. “Oh, Elladan. I am so sorry.”
He shook his head and sighed. But he couldn’t help feeling angry. He had his mother back but that only made his heart ache more.
She sensed it and sat down. “Elladan? Elrond told me. I think you need to look to my right.”
Elladan frowned and wasn’t inclined to follow her advice, but she gently but firmly made sure he did. His eyes widened in shock and disbelief and he looked at his mother.
She nodded. “Your father told me. He’s reborn, Elladan.” She kissed him. “I am so happy for you. Go, tap Lilliath.”
Elladan frowned. “Lilliath?”
Celebrían nodded. “Aye, the girl he’s dancing with has become my best friend. I will tell you everything about Valinor later. Right now you need to dance with your mate.” She gently pushed him forward and Elrond smiled, coming to stand beside them. “She’s right, Elladan. It’s time to heal.”
Elladan nodded and walked forward. His legs felt extremely wobbly but he continued. He stopped when he stood behind Leloth, looking the female in the eye. “Ehm, Lilliath, may I cut in?”
Lilliath smiled and nodded. “It would be my pleasure, my lord.” She swiftly left, ignoring Leloth’s funny look.
He shrugged his shoulders and turned, curious to see who Lilliath had set him up with. The second he saw the other’s face he smiled. “Elrohir? You look different. Shouldn’t you be dancing with Erestor?” He was confused, and his confusion only grew when he saw the other’s shocked and hurt look before tears gathered in the orbs. Now that he saw them he realised they weren’t Elrohir’s.
/I’ve seen them before./
/Elladan!/
One realisation tumbled over the other as he gazed into the other’s eyes.
Elladan had a hard time fighting his pain and his sense of rejection. Only his mothers words echoing in his mind kept him from falling apart. He simply didn’t remember him yet.
And then he saw knowledge and recognition slowly enter the orbs.
He smiled and stepped forward. “Would you dance with me, Leloth?” He could see the other acted on auto pilot but it didn’t stop him from enjoying the dance, the feel of the other in his arms once more. He could hear consternation to his left but didn’t care. Every sense of his being was focused on his beloved.
Suddenly the other stopped and crushed him. “Elladan! My Elladan!”
Elladan smiled and pulled the other closer still and leaned in. “My beloved Leloth. You came back to me, meleth.” Those words made the other cry and Elladan swiftly kissed him, showing him he was still the same.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ohhhh, they’re kissing.”
Elrond frowned. “Celebrían! Erestor and Lilliath are fighting, not kissing.”
Celebrían swiftly turned and her eyes widened, seeing her friend and the usually calm counsellor fight in a most unfitting manner. Elrohir stood there with a fearful expression on his face and his glance kept shifting from his father to the scene. Not even Glorfindel and Ecthelion dared intervene.
Atheron shook his head and was already selecting herbs from his pouch and ripping cloth.
Celebrían stepped forward, intend on ending this but then Erestor’s pain-filled scream filled the air and the counsellor tumbled to the ground. Lilliath glared at him and smiled victoriously.
Before either Celebrían or Elrond could address it Elrohir pushed her away and kneeled beside Erestor. “Meleth, are you all right? Where did that bitch hurt you? Oh, beloved.” He turned his head and glared. “I think it best if we stay far from each other.” He pulled Erestor close and smiled adorningly. “Why can’t you just trust me, you oaf?”
Elrond raised his eyebrows at the words.
Celebrían shook her head at Lilliath. “That’s not what I had in mind, darling.”
The other nodded and smiled. “Neither did I, but I do have honour, Celebrían, and when it’s attacked I fight back.” She shrugged. “They’ll be fine.”
Elrohir flared up and looked from Lilliath to his mother in sheer disbelief.
Ecthelion laughed and hastily stepped between them. “You father and mother filled each other in on their lives apart, on your lives as well. I think Celebrían knew, as do we all, that you and Erestor need some encouragement to deepen your relationship. And Lilliath is always willing to help.”
Lilliath nodded and helped Erestor up. “Do not worry. I am not interested in you or Elrohir. But I -am- interested in seeing you wed.”
Elrohir laughed and shook his head. “Aye, you are definitely worse than Arwen.”
He ignored his sister’s growl and kneeled before Erestor. “I don’t want anything like this happening again. I want the world to know we belong together and I don’t want you to leave, for it would break my heart. Will you please bind yourself to me?”
Erestor cocked his head. “Would you?”
Elrohir nodded eagerly. “Aye. I love you and want to be with you forever, be yours. Be mine?”
Erestor smiled and nodded. “Always.”
Elrohir jumped up and grinned cheekily. “I don’t suppose I can borrow Arwen’s ring for a while?”
Arwen playfully hit him over the head. “You certainly cannot.” Her eyes shone. “You guys had me worried. Where’s Elaldan? Elladan, Ro and Erestor….” She trailed of, seeing her other brother kiss another elf.
Elrond jumped up. “YES!” He couldn’t stop himself and rushed forward and twirled the two startled elves around. “YES! YES! YES!”
Elladan screamed, stunned by the sudden movement and briefly wondered how his father managed to do this. “Adar, put us down. Help! Someone!”
Celebrían laughed. “Put them down, meleth.” She rushed forward to support the dizzy elves.
Elladan pulled her close. “I love you, nana.”
She smiled and nodded. “And I you. I never stopped loving you, my child.” She turned him around. “While you were kissing your mate, your twin proposed to Erestor.”
Elladan jumped up and dashed forward, stunning his twin by burying him in a tight hug. When he allowed his Elrohir to breathe again he looked confused. “Erestor? What happened to you? I thought Ro proposed?”
His eyes widened and Erestor hurried to soothe him. “He did, and I accepted.” He blushed. “I got jealous.”
Elrohir embraced him and pulled him closer and looked at the healer, who smiled. “Don’t worry. Only bruises and small cuts. The only big wound here is his shattered ego.” He stood and walked away. “I am getting rid of this ridiculous outfit.”
Elrond laughed. “You are right, nin-caul, he is something else.” He shrugged. “Shall we call this feast to an end and retire?”
Celebrían moaned and leaned in close. “I desire you.”
To this Elrond gasped and lifted her, making her laugh. “See you tomorrow.” He practically ran through the corridors.
Elrohir pulled Erestor along and one look at Elladan told him the questions would have to wait till tomorrow.
Soon the only ones left were Glorfindel and Ecthelion. “Well, I don’t have to guess what will be happening tonight.”
Ecthelion laughed. “Let’s go to my rooms then, they are a bit further from the noises they are bound to make.”
Glorfindel shook his head and pulled his lover close. “Do you think they will believe we still haven’t kissed?”
Ecthelion shook his head. “Not for a second.” He waited but then looked at his lover seductively. “Perhaps we should give them a reason not to believe it.” Seeing his need mirrored in Glorfindel’s eyes he leaned in closer and claimed his lips.
Glorfindel smiled warmly. “You promised to tell me about your second youth.”
Ecthelion nodded and for the duration of the night they talked.

Celebrían smiled when she woke up. Bliss had been restored to them all. She snuggled closer and her mind already started working on clothes and displays. Three weddings…
Elrond mumbled and peeked through his eyelids. “Don’t make such racket.”
She laughed and kissed him, forcing him to really leave the dream world. “I was just thinking on the decorations and clothes for the weddings.”
Elrond’s eyebrow rose and he cocked his head. Normally he would have flared up, but Celebrían was pressing him down.
She grinned and nodded. “Do you really think Elladan won’t want to make it everlasting? Or that Glorfindel and Ecthelion won’t recommit?”
He laughed and nodded. “You are right. Three weddings.” He groaned. “How is my realm to survive that?”
He stood and flung on a robe. “Come, let’s watch the sunrise together.” As they stood on the balcony they saw their children doing the same; all embraced by their mates. It brought a smile to Elrond’s face and he pulled his wife close. “You brought peace for all of us.”
She remained silent as she watched the new day begin, seeing what her loved ones were seeing as well. She knew the room above now houses Celeborn and Galadriel and a small flowed floated down: her father’s gift to her.
From the corner of her eye she saw Glorfindel and Ecthelion admire the view as well. /Perfect! Everything is perfect./ But she knew it would not last long. Lilliath and Erestor were bound to fight some more and Elrond and Atheron would start bickering soon, she just knew it. But at the moment nothing mattered.
