Part 6
Part 6
The two elves stared at each other, neither moving, neither speaking, both seemingly more than satisfied to maintain the silent staring contest.
Finally Erestor summoned his courage and broke the silence “I think we need to talk.” The smooth voice drifting down the corridor caused Glorfindel to a start. Taking a hesitant step forward Glorfindel opened his mouth to speak but was gently cut off from before uttering a single word.
“Not here.”
“Where?”
“My rooms..?”
Nodding his head in agreement Glorfindel watched as the slender advisor turned, and with his tread light, began to walk unhurriedly in the same direction Haldir had recently gone. Turning in the opposite direction from which Haldir had taken Erestor led the way towards the family quarters, Glorfindel following quietly in wak wake.
Erestor moved slowly in the direction of the wing housing the families quarters, thankful for the uninhabited state of the grand hallways as it allowed him to bring a semblance of order to his muddled thoughts and sort out what he wanted to do regarding the warrior trailing meekly behind him. Reaching his chambers, Erestor glanced briefly at Glorfindel before pushing down on the handle and stepping into the rooms he called home. Standing off to the side, one hand still upon the door handle, Erestor gestured for Glorfindel to enter and watched in unspoken appreciation as the muscular warrior ambled through the door way, continuing until he had reached the small fireplace where a warm inviting flame beckoned welcomingly.
Letting the door swing shut with a soft click, Erestor rotated his body and took three measured steps towards the still form of his companion, parting his lips taking a breath, pariparing to give life to the words he knew needed to be said.
“Erestor, wait. Please, let me go first.” Pausing briefly when Erestor nodded in acceptance, Glorfindel continued, placing his hand over his heart, “Please, believe me when I say that I had no knowledge of that bet. I didn’t pursue you because of a wager or as a malicious hoax. I did it because…” Glorfindel trailed off, lowered his hand to his side and gazed beseechingly into Erestor’s guarded brown eyes. “Because I… I care for you.”
Bi the the inside of his bottom lip in anticipation Glorfindel held his breath, waiting for Erestor’s reaction, be it good or bad.
“I see.”
A full minute passed before Glorfindel realized that Erestor did not intend to say more. Waiting for another painstakingly long moment in which brown eyes stared into blue, Glorfindel finally closed his eyes in defeat, his shoulders dropping slightly. Bowing his head to the regal and dignified counselor Glorfindel summoned his own tattered compe ane and moved swiftly towards the door, fearing that if he lingered a second more he would surrender to his heartbreak and succumb to the tears threatening to overwhelm him. Avoiding so much as even looking at Erestor, though feeling those intelligent and piercing brown eyes upon him, Glorfindel reached for the door handle, furtively praying to any Gods kind enough to listen that Erestor would say something, or do something to stop him.
