The old ways 56

Suddenly a cool and comforting hand rested upon his brow.

"Shhh.... Haldir. It is me Eowyn. I have news about your Legolas."

"He is alive." Haldir choked "But there is something wrong. Something wrong with the bond. There is something or someone else. Like he is not alone anymore." Haldir closed his eyes in anguish.

"Maybe it feels wrong because he isn't too well. I have heard from one of the servants, that the elf travelling with our King had been ill and pale. It is said that he rested a lot while the dwarf and Aragorn cared for him, before they left for the Path of the dead."

agoragorn, maybe he.....NO!" Haldir suddenly glared angrily.

"Be at peace, Haldir. What are you saying. What is on your mind?" Eowyn didn’t know what to make of Haldir’s sudden angry voice.

"I told you, there is someone with him. Someone close. Someone strange but yet not. Maybe Aragorn has taken it upon him to comfort Legolas in more than one way. I have seen him look at him.... look at him like.....they were always so close..." Haldir turned away from Eowyn.

"No! I can't believe what you are implying. Lord Aragorn would never do anything like that. Relax, my friend. Maybe there is another explanation. You said strange but yet not. What do you mean?"

"It’s like I know that other presence, but then again I cannot place it. Therefore it is the only explanation I have. Another person I know but I don’t know that intimately." Haldir sighed and closed his eyes in frustration.

"I don’t believe Legolas would do anything like that." Eowyn tried to persuade Haldir. "The way you talk about him, it would be more likely for him to perish of grief than to take another."

"We had sworn to another at our bonding ceremony that if the life of one would end the other would follow. Apparently those words were not true."

"Haldir! You are NOT dead. Maybe he can feel it the same way you can feel him. If that is so, then way should he die?" Eowyn had turned Haldir’s face towards her, by taking a hold of his chin with her right hand.

Haldir blinked hard, as if to fight back tears "Eowyn, you an amazing woman. You give hope were there is none in sight. Do you truly believe that it could be the case? But how could I explain the other presence I can feel?"

"I don’t know Haldir. I really don’t, but maybe it has a totally natural cause. Maybe it’s just a deep friendship you can feel along the bond. Or...., I don’t know."

Suddenly Haldir’s brow furrowed. He stared at the ceiling clearly lost in thought. "A natural cause?" he murmured.

"Ed’ i’ear a’alenea!" Haldir cried out and tried to sit up.

"No! Haldir, you have to stay stilon’ton’t try to sit up on your own. What are you doing?" Eowyn held onto the strong shoulders, desperately fighting to keep Haldir on the bed.

"I have to go, I need to leave now. Eowyn, if what I suspect is true then he needs all the help and protection he can get. It is far too dangerous for him out there, he shouldn’t be fighting, he shouldn’t be placed in such a danger."

"Haldir, calm yourself. What are you talking about?"

"I fear that Legolas has become pregnant during his stay in Lothlorien. I never thought of the fact that he could become pregnant, too absorbed I was in his presence. I never dwelled on it and I dare say neither did he. Oh no, if this is really true then I must leave, no matter at what cost. Eowyn, I told you that we did fight a lot in the past, and at the end the last words I spoke to him before he left me for such a long time were not only spoken in anger, but they were so harsh and unfair. I told him that I would never trust him with the life of my child. I wanted to keep him safe, and I feared the danger of loosing him in battle. And when I spoke those words something inside of him broke. The light in his eyes lessened when he turned and left my side. I even accused him of being so irrational and that he would even go to war carrying a child risking it's life for his own glory. Eowyn, we are in a war and if its true that he is carrying our child, he must be thinking of what I said and I don’t want him to despair. Eowyn, he is the only person I know well, and I would entrust my life or that of our child, to carry it unharmed through a battle." Tears were running freely down the fair features now and Haldir’s hands clutched at Eowyn’s in desperation.
