Chapter 5 - The Choice

As they reached the courtyard, they dismounted then stopped in their tracks as Aragorn stood staring at them. He had seen the way his son was wrapped around Legolas as they had approached. Suddenly all those little moments he had observed between them formed a startling picture he was not ready to accept. Melethrien, sensing more of that strange tension in the air, trotted off to the safety of the stables.

“I entrust you to teach my boy, and you do this! Is this your way to mete out revenge upon me?” Aragorn said with the undertones of anger clear in his low voice.

“Father, no!” Eldarion shouted. “You know that is not his way! I am free to choose to whom I give my heart. And I have chosen.”

Legolas added with a quietly ominous tone, “Do not banish me, for I will not make another promise should my heart be broken again.” He backed away, stopping at one of the trees on the outskirts of the yard.

Aragorn stood, unmoving, his face unchanging.

Eldarion felt a desperate anger explode within himself as he cried out to his father, “I will not let Legolas live in a world without having either one of us. Your choice all but killed him!”

Aragorn still did not show any sign of accepting what he had seen, but inwardly the truth of his son’s words ripped doubt through his thoughts.

Seeing no outward response, Eldarion looked directly at his father as he said determinedly, “Then he would be better off in the Halls of Waiting.”

Without speaking again, he raised his bow and swiftly nocked an arrow. He pointed the weapon towards where Legolas was standing and released it. He reached for another and another in quick succession.

The scene flashed before their eyes. A scream of horror escaped from Arwen as she saw Legolas make no move to save himself.

Eldarion had executed three perfectly aimed shots in pure Elven style - even to the point that Aragorn recognized exactly the same body movement in his son as he had seen in Legolas when he shot.

Aragorn blinked in disbelief as he saw Legolas, still standing with three arrows lodged in the tree beside his head. The Elf had not even flinched, such was the trust he had in Eldarion’s acquired skill. Aragorn realized shamefully that Legolas, true to his word, had instructed the Prince properly.

Aragorn turned and strode inside, stopping briefly to pull out the little arrow from the carving over the door. He needed to sit down and consider the implications of what had happened. Eldarion looked at the uncharacteristic form of his father retreating and stared with an open mouth, for once, speech escaping even his nimble tongue. Arwen ushered her son to follow his father. They hurried along after him.

When they turned to invite Legolas to come with them, only an empty space remained where the Elf had stood moments before. Legolas was gone.

“No!” Eldarion cried as the Elf’s words returned to him,
