Chapter 5

Only vaguely aware of the movements around her, Brennil remained still against the ground beneath her. The pain she felt just moments before seemed distant to her now, a feeling of detachment moving through her, almost bringing her some sort of relief.
She knew nothing of the fact that the form above her was none other then Glorfindel himself. That he was the only thing standing between her and the orcs as he fought them back. Nor was she aware of the twins fighting to the side of her, one on either side, the three elves keeping her protected on all sides until every orc had been killed.
“ Brennil?” Someone’s calming voice sounded in her ear. Her eyes opened slowly but still she saw nothing, darkness fading slowly as the world around her came into focus and with it, the pain.
“Stay with me, Brennil.” Glorfindel pleaded quietly as he applied some pressure to her wound to slow the bleeding. He had seen worse wounds before but mostly on Warriors, elves trained in fighting, trained to deal with the pain. Brennil was not trained for this and he could see the pain in her eyes as they tried to focus on him.

“Glorfindel.” Elladan moved next to them.” We cannot stay here.” He reminded the older elf.
“ I know” He replied, not wanting to move Brennil but knowing they had no choice. Should more orcs arrive and catch them all off guard it could be fatal to all of them
“ I will ride ahead,” Elrohir said, already mounting his horse.
“ Tell Ada to be ready.” Elladan called out to his twin. Turning, he helped Glorfindel to lift Brennil carefully. Neither elf wasted any time in mounting their horses. Glorfindel kept Brennil close against him while trying not to bring her more pain then she was already feeling.
“Glorfindel?” Brennil’s voice sounded strained and she whimpered as he urged his horse to move faster.
“ I am here.” He replied, unable to look at her just yet. He tightened his hold on her to keep her steady as they raced back to Rivendell.

Brennil was taken from him once they had arrived. He could only watch silently as she was brought quickly to the healing rooms.
“Are you injured?” Elrond’s voice broke into his thoughts. He gave his friend a questioning look and looked down at his tunic when Elrond pointed it out
“This is not my blood” he replied, looking back up in time to see Elrond rushing off towards the healing rooms. “It is Brennil’s.” he added quietly to himself.
Glorfindel could not remember a time when the house of Elrond had sounded this quiet. The halls felt empty and deserted as he walked slowly to his own room. Even once inside his room, he could not find peace, his guilt eating at him as his mind filled with thoughts of everything he could have done differently. He gave up pacing after a few minutes and let himself drop onto his bed. Staring up at the ceiling as the thoughts just kept running through his mind.
“Glorfindel?” Elladan’s voice broke into his thoughts. He turned his head to see the older twin standing there
“ Do you not know how to knock? “ He asked
“ I did.” Elladan pointed out “more then once.”
Sitting up in his bed, Glorfindel ran his hand through his hair before finally looking over at Elladan
“Why are you here?” he finally asked
“ My father asked me to find you.” He replied.” He requests that you join him in his office.”
Glorfindel took a deep breath and merely nodded. He left his room and made his way to Elrond’s office, surprised to see that Erestor was there as well
“ Who is with Brennil?” he asked, knowing she would not have been left alone.
“I have asked Elladan and Elrohir to stay with her.” Elrond replied. He motioned for Glorfindel to take a seat and waited until he had.

“ Neither of you will be leaving this room until this is settled.” Elrond started.” I do not know how things became so complicated so quickly but this needs to be fixed now. Do neither of you realize that Brennil could have lost her life today? That it was both your actions that have caused this.” He almost growled the last part as he glared at them both. When neither elf replied, Elrond sighed and sat back in his chair. “ Erestor, being a father, I to understand that you only wish the best for your daughter.” He said. “ Your wish to have her with Lindir has had caused problems not just with Brennil but with Lindir as well. Whether you knew this or not, Lindir is not available, yet now he faces losing his love. “ He paused to take another deep breath when he saw his advisor shifting uncomfortably. “ The elleth that Lindir has been with for years is now pulling away from him. She knows of his deep respect for you and is afraid he will give in if you asked him to.”
Erestor looked at Elrond then turned his head to look towards the window. He saw Lindir there speaking with a younger elleth and even from where Erestor sat, he could tell she was not happy.

“Glorfindel.” Elrond turned to look over at the other elf. “ It is you who is being the most stubborn in all this.” He said. “ I can only imagine you stayed away from Brennil out of respect for Erestor’s wishes. However you did not even explain to her did you?” he asked
Glorfindel’s guilt was already eating at him and this was not making him feel any better. He merely shook his head in reply to Elrond and sighed softly.
“ That was your mistake, one you will have to live with. You should have told her. “ Elrond sighed. “I am sure that if you had there would have been a shouting match between her and Erestor, for she is as head strong as he is.” He grinned at Erestor. “ but I do agree with Elladan on one thing, it would have been her choice to make.” He said firmly.

Erestor looked back out the window and Glorfindel leaned back in his seat and ran his hand through his hair. Elrond wanted to reach over and smack both their heads together, hoping to knock some sense into both of them. Erestor wanted what was best for Brennil but Elrond could not understand why his advisor could not see that what was best for her was Glorfindel. It was also clear to anyone who knew Glorfindel that the elf cared for Brennil. It showed in his actions towards as he had raced to find her, his concern still showing in his eyes now, though Elrond knew the elf would not admit it.

“ How can I know she won’t get hurt with Glorfindel.” Erestor finally spoke. “ He’s a warrior, he could be killed on patrol and where would that leave her?” He questioned.
“ She would mourn him just as the rest of us would” Elrond pointed out.
“ And you believe I should put her through that?” Erestor almost snapped in reply.
“ It is a chance to take no matter who you wish her to be with”Elrond said. “Have you once considered how things could be should he not be killed?” He questioned his advisor.
Erestor did not answer him and Elrond knew it was because he did not have an answer for him.
“ He was with that elleth again before dinner.” Erestor pointed out
“No I was not” Glorfindel defended. “ Though she tried, I merely walked her back to her room and walked away.” He said.
Erestor turned his head towards Glorfindel, trying to see if he was telling the truth or not.

Elrond watched them both, wondering if they would both every agree on this. He sipped the wine he had in front of him and decided he needed to take matters into his own hands and push these two to agree
“ Glorfindel.” Elrond spoke quietly. “ if given the chance, would you not wish to Court Brennil?” he asked
“ Of course I would.” Glorfindel replied, without hesitation.
“ Erestor, you know of Glorfindel’s loyalty to those he cares about. With this said, I am sure he would not willingly hurt Brennil.” Elrond arched an eyebrow as he looked at his advisor. “ would it truly be so hard to let Brennil have this chance as well?” he said
“ It would be a mistake” Erestor said stubbornly.
Elrond merely smiled at that point and raised his eyebrow a slight bit more.
“Is that not what you and Celeborn said about my marrying Celebrian?” he challenged. “I would say you both had been very wrong about that.” He said, looking at Glorfindel when the elf had cleared his through to keep from laughing. “ I do believe I can quote Galadriel here and say that it is her mistake to make” he said” if it truly is a mistake that is.” he added
Erestor did not reply and to anyone who knew him it was plain to see he was pouting. Elrond’s point had been made and both elves knew it.

“ I just not want her to end up with a broken heart.” Erestor sighed softly as he looked over at Glorfindel.
“I would not let that happen.” Glorfindel replied.
“ I swear, Glorfindel if you are killed I will find a way to bring you back so I can kill you myself” He said with a light growl. Elrond almost choked on the sip of wine he had just taken.
Glorfindel knew the threat was serious but had chuckled anyway.
“ Erestor the valar returned me once already.” He said.” Do you think they would keep me again when I would have Brennil to return to?” he replied. “nothing would stop me from coming back, not even Mandos himself.”
Elrond chuckled lightly as he leaned back against his chair again, his glass of wine resting in his hand.
“ I can assume now that this is settled?” He arched an eyebrow. Both Erestor and Glorfindel nodded
“ in that case you both have to fix one more thing.” He said.” Erestor it is up to you to convince Lindir’s elleth that she is no longer at risk of losing him.” He told his advisor. “ I suggest you do this soon before another mistake is made.”
Erestor turned back towards the window but by then Lindir and the elleth were both gone.
“ I shall speak to them both in the morning” he replied quietly, already planning on what he would say to them.
“as for you.” He looked over at Glorfindel. “ I can only assume that Brennil will not be too pleased with you, that is something that you will have to deal with.” Elrond said. “ and since she is exactly like Erestor, you will have your hands full.” He added
“ I know I will” Glorfindel nodded. “ I have no plans to give up no matter how long it takes.” he replied
“ good” Elrond said “now maybe life in Rivendell can return to normal” he said, sipping his wine slowly. “in fact I am counting on it.”

The three of them moved to discuss another topic. Glorfindel voiced his concern over the fact that the orcs who had attacked Brennil had been very close to the borders. It was agreed that a patrol would be sent out that very morning to scout the entire area. Glorfindel agreed to send his captain in his place as he was too concerned about Brennil. He was more then willing to stay with her.
“ we should all get some rest.” Elrond replied. “ it is late and none of us have slept in almost two days.” He said.” I for one can use the rest now and I will after I check on Brennil.”
All three elves looked over when Elladan rushed into the room. The twin arched an eyebrow slightly when he saw Glorfindel and Erestor still there.
Seeing the look on his son’s face he grinned slightly.
“ They have finally come to an understanding.” He replied.” Erestor had agreed to let Glorfindel court Brennil.”

Elladan winced at his father’s words then looked over at him.
“ as good as that is to hear.” He said” there may be a slight problem with that at the moment” he said
“ explain yourself, Elladan.” Elrond replied, wondering what else they ha to face now.
“ Brennil woke up not very long ago” He started. He did not fail to see the relief in Glorfindel’s eyes but knew it was going to be short lived.
“ This is good news” Erestor replied. “ I am sure she will be glad to hear things have been settled.” He added
Elladan looked at his father first then the other two, taking a deep breath.
“ She does not remember who she is.” He said. “nor does she remember anyone else.”
