Summary: Glorfindel, newly returned to Middle Earth, catches a ride to Imladris with a band of gypsies.
A/N: Ellian=hermaphrodite. Ama = the elven word for a hermaphrodite parent.
“Ama! Ama Ama Ama!!! Look who I founded!” Faunion ran up to his parent, tugging at the colorful skirt.
Eyes wide, Erestor turned around from his washing to face Glorfindel. A little shirt was clenched tightly in his soapy hands, wash water dripping onto the ground.
“Hi,” Glorfindel said quietly, advancing slowly.
Erestor cast his eyes down and turned back to the wash, dropping the shirt in the bucket of soapy water. The dark elf heaved a shaky sigh. “Hello.”
Glorfindel came forward a few more steps until he stood side by side with the little gypsy. He could smell the soap from the wash and the sweet, gentle scent of Erestor himself. Erestor’s delicate, yet rough hands trembled as he dunked them into the water to fish out another piece of clothing and scrub it over the wash board.
Faunion smiled, sure that all was now right in the world. He ran off into the camp to find his grandfather, waving goodbye to his Ama and blowing him a kiss.
Erestor sighed, wringing out his current article of clothing and dropping it in the rinsing bucket. Glorfindel placed his hand on Erestor’s shoulder, the contact sending a shock through both of them.
“What did you think, Nuar-Glorfindel?” Erestor whispered. “Did you think that a bond just, just disappears? I loved you, Glorfindel. I bonded with you. As young as I am, I know that a bond doesn’t just go away because you want it to. There was never anyone better than you for me. The Valar chose you to be my bonded. They blessed us with a child.” Erestor pressed the back a wet hand to his mouth, breathing deeply to try to control his tears. “A child. A beautiful, perfect little baby that has been missing his father since he learned that every other child has a mommy and a daddy.”
“Erestor, I-”
“Do you have any idea what it’s like when your child asks you where their daddy is, and you have to tell them I don’t know.”
Glorfindel was silent. There really was nothing he could say against that.
“Not only that,” Erestor waved his finger at Glorfindel, working himself into a fine rage. “Not only that, but I find that you lied to me. You lied about so much! I didn’t even know your name! Your past!”
“I…I can’t even begin to know what you have gone through,” Glorfindel admitted. “I must concede that age does not always bring wisdom. What happened between us…what I caused between us was…something that could have been avoided. I should have-I should have thought with something other than my faulty sense of honor.” He took Erestor’s hands, and the darkling reluctantly turned to face him. “I should have thought with my heart, with my soul.”
“Yes, you should have.” Erestor pulled his hands free and turned away.
“Can I make you a promise?”
“Your promises mean nothing to me,” Erestor sniffed disdainfully.
Glorfindel winced. “I guess I deserve that. But…I promise that if you stay here, with me, that I will be the best father I can to Faunion. If you stay here, you won’t have to…dance ever again. I’ll provide everything for you and our son. You can go to school-”
“Do not tease me!” Erestor demanded, turning around in a fury. “Do not make promises you cannot keep. What if I do stay? What if I do leave my family, my friends, everything I know and stay here? Will you come up with another reason to reject me? Or, Valar forbid, my son? What if you decide that you are suddenly not fit to be a parent? I can’t deal with that Glorfindel. It would be easier if you just left us as we are. I won’t have to explain to my son that you didn’t want him anymore, should your Valar-forsaken damned honor decide to rear its useless head again.”
“I wouldn’t do that! I wouldn’t abandon my son!”
“You abandoned me! You abandoned your bonded! How could you say you wouldn’t abandon your son?!”
“I made a mistake!”
“That almost cost me my life,” Erestor hissed.
Glorfindel was shocked out of the anger he had been building up. “What…”
“What do you think? When you left…when you didn’t come back…what was I supposed to think about that? I’d been rejected by my bonded. If it hadn’t been for Faunion…”
Glorfindel couldn’t help himself. He grabbed Erestor and pulled him into an embrace. One arm wrapped around Erestor’s middle to hold him close. His other hand buried itself in the mass of dark braids, curls, beads, and scarf to hold Erestor’s face in the crook of his shoulder.
For his own part, Erestor was too startled to move. He let Glorfindel cling to him, and he rested his head on the strong, broad shoulder of the bigger man. A tired, hopeless breath left his lips as he closed his eyes.
This was too much. Really. What was he going to do? How could he leave? Naur-Glorfindel. Glorfindel was here. He was here, and he was just as perfect as Erestor remembered. The warrior still smelled like leather and sword metal where Erestor buried his face into his neck. He smelled like forever and home.
But…how could he trust him?
Maybe-maybe this was a second chance?
“What do I do?” Erestor whispered, more to himself than to the warrior holding him.
“Stay here,” Glorfindel pleaded. The blond buried his face into Erestor’s hair and clenched his eyes closed against the building tears. “Stay here. I love you. I never stopped loving you. Please don’t leave.”
“I plead with you not to leave. I begged. And yet…”
“What I did was heinous and reprehensible. I can’t believe-how did I-how can I possibly live without you?”
“Don’t let me leave.” Erestor didn’t want to go. He wanted to try, even if it tore his soul to shreds to be rejected again. Even if he had to flee with his child in the night. He wanted to try again. Faunion would love his father as surely as Erestor loved the warrior.
Maybe…maybe this time…
“I won’t. I can’t. How could I let go of you twice?” Glorfindel’s voice softened, almost inaudible. “How could I have left you once?” Honor be damned. It was not worth the pain, the ache of loss he had endured for five long, long years. It was not worth causing the one he loved most in the world so much suffering.
“I’ll stay.”
***************************
“Byebye Grampa!”
Bellfaer smiled, albeit sadly. “Goodbye, little one. You’ll be good for your Ama, right?”
“Ya! I pwomise.”
“Good.” The elder elf leaned down and hugged his grandchild tightly. “Now go say goodbye to your Grandmother.”
“Alright Grampa!”
Faunion raced away, intent on seeing everyone before the camp rolled out with the rising of the sun. The first few rays of light crept over the horizon to herald the coming dawn. Large, shaggy horses were lead to the harnesses in front of the wagons one by one and strapped in. Fires were extinguished and the last of the miscellaneous items were slowly being packed away.
Bellfaer turned to his son who stood beside him. “Are you sure this is what you want?”
Erestor nodded. “I want to try.”
“For yourself or for Faunion?”
“For both of us. And…Lord Elrond has offered me an apprenticeship. It doesn’t pay much, but it should be enough to get by.”
“You’re not going to ask support from…him?”
Erestor shook his head. “I want to make my own way.”
His father embraced him. Erestor sighed and let his head rest on Bellfaer’s shoulder. “You’ll be back in a year?”
“On the dot. If you want to leave before then…”
Erestor smiled. “I’ll send a messenger. Hopefully, I won’t want to leave when you visit a year from now.”
“For your sake, I hope you won’t either. I love you, my son. I hope you will be happy.”
“I hope so, too.”
“Did you already say goodbye to your mother?”
“Yes,” Erestor nodded.
Bellfear pulled back and kissed Erestor’s forehead. “May the Valar be with you, little one.”
“And with you, Papa.”
It wasn’t much later that the wagons rolled out the courtyard gates. Erestor stood with Faunion and watched until the dust from the wheels was no longer visible. He sighed, tugging Faunion’s hand to gain his attention.
“Let’s go inside, baby. Your Daddy’s waiting for us.”
Faunion nodded, sad and excited at the same time. They turned toward the huge house, their new home. Glorfindel, the thief, had managed to steal Erestor’s heart all over again in the space of but a few days. Erestor was still skeptical, as well he should be, but the look of adoration in his son’s eyes when he was held by his father made Erestor feel as if everything, someday, may turn out for the better.
A new adventure, a new home, and a new life all in the space of a breath.
But what could one expect, from gypsies, tramps, and thieves?
